INCA TRAIL TREK TO MACHU PICCHU Clifton resident Jodie Hall is to embark on an eight-day trek to Machu Picchu, Peru, with the aim of raising over £4,000 for the charity, Alzheimer’s Society.Organised by Discover Adventure, specialists in trekking and cycling challenges worldwide for charitable fundraising, Jodie’s trekking expedition will depart on 29th October 2016.She will be trekking on Inca-paved paths and steps, up through cloud forest to the demanding Dead Woman’s Pass (4200m), with continuous climbs and drops down steep paths and the additional challenge of increasing altitude, finally arriving at the Sun Gate, which overlooks Machu Picchu. In order to maximise the challenge, Jodie will also be extending her expedition an additional four days in the Amazon rainforest and a further five days on Lake Titicaca.Jodie, aged 21 and a student at Nottingham Trent University, is raising money for Alzheimer’s Society; a charity close to her family’s hearts since losing her Grandma to Dementia at the age of 59 back in 2005. Her aim is to increase awareness of the disease whilst fundraising and to raise as much money as possible for the charity, in order for dementia

patients throughout the UK to be given the continuous support they deserve. Discover Adventure offers a great deal for charities, with at least 50% of fundraising targets going direct to the charity concerned. Its eco-friendly worldwide challenges include classic routes, such as the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu or Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle trip, to tailor-made expeditions – all led by highly experienced leaders. To support Jodie Hall’s charity challenge, visit: www.justgiving.com/jodieh16.

FREE CYCLE STORAGE AT TRAM PARK AND RIDECyclists can now take advantage of free bike storage at both new tram park and ride sites, at the Clifton South and Toton Lane stops, in addition to similar facilities at other park and ride sites. Nottingham City Council has now installed the new cycle storage facilities, with room for 16 bikes at each, as part of its Citycard Cycle network. It is also planning to make Citycard Cycles available to hire from both sites in future. To access these Citycard Cycle Hubs, cyclists must first register their Citycard at the Broadmarsh Travel Centre in Broadmarsh Bus Station. Free Citycards can also be obtained at the Travel Centre, with proof of address. Both new tram park and ride sites have now joined others on the tram network in receiving the Park Mark safer parking award, for their car parking and CCTV facilities, from the Association of Chief Police Officers and also the British Parking Association.Councillor Jane Urquhart, with lead responsibility for NET at Nottingham City Council, said: “NET Phase Two was designed to be a fully integrated part of the city’s transport network.“Various facilities for cyclists were built alongside the new tram routes, so it is good to see these hubs open to help cyclists travel further afield

alongside our successful tram network.”Councillor Nick McDonald, portfolio holder for Jobs, Growth and Transport, said: “These new Citycard Cycle Hubs provide crucial links in our integrated transport service, encouraging people to use bikes more often and making it easier for them to transfer from cycle to tram safe in the knowledge that their bike is secure at a Park Mark-approved site.”

More information about Citycard Cycle facilities is available at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/citycardcycles. Guides to help cyclists travel around and explore the extended tram network, including information about the features built into the routes specially for cyclists, such as cycle lanes, crossings and stands, plus a detailed map of the routes and cycle safety tips, are available at www.thetram.net/safety-cycling.aspx.

LOCAL MAN TAKES PART IN SUCCESSFUL BIG BIKE RIDE 2Jason Ratcliffe, the assistant chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, has praised the efforts of the 70-plus riders who completed Big Bike Ride 2 and raised a significant six-figure sum for the PCA Benevolent Fund, sponsored by Royal London and the Tom Maynard Trust. One of the riders was local man Pete Ford. He told The Local News: “I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me, helping me to raise £1,290 to date.“Particularly those local residents who bought my flapjacks or gave donations, specifically raising a total of £170.“The ride was tough but fulfilling and apart from a great sense of achievement in aid of great

causes, it was an absolute thrill to be amongst an inspiring group of people.“Some of them were well-known cricketers, such as Darren Gough, Marcus Trescothick, Gareth Batty, Geraint Jones and Robert Key, as well as model and presenter Jodie Kidd, who completed the final two days of the ride.” The ride began in Truro and ended at the Kia Oval after five gruelling stages, which included two days of punishing hill climbing in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and a 100-mile leg from Somerset’s Taunton headquarters to Hampshire’s Ageas Bowl. More than £100,000 has so far been raised for the two cricket charities. “Many thanks to everybody in involved at every stage,” said Ratcliffe.“The whole event has required help on a number levels with organisation from health and safety, to route planning, mechanical support, luggage couriering, multiple hotel accommodation plans

to food and drink provision. Needless to say, all of this takes a lot of time and planning. “It all lays the foundations for the event to work and support the multiple riders, who have given up their time to train, given up their allocated holidays from work, spent time away from loved ones over a weekend, raised significant monies from friends and colleagues and also spent their own money on bike equipment and travel. “We’ve raised significant money that will be vital for the work we do within both charities.“It’s an enormous collective effort and we are hugely appreciative of each and every person involved at every level. Many many thanks.” To support and donate to Big Bike Ride 2 go to the following website https://mydonate.bt.com/events/bbr2pcabftmt/193332. For more information on the Bike Ride please visit http://www.thepca.co.uk/big-bike-ride-2.

AGE FRIENDLY CLIFTON SCHEME IS EXTENDED Age Friendly Nottingham is extending its campaign to get more seats for older people in their local communities. The ‘Take a Seat’ campaign aims for more shops and businesses to have a seat available in case an older person needs to catch their breath and rest. The scheme has already started in Clifton and is now being launched in Bilborough.‘Take a Seat’ is about raising awareness of how older people sometimes struggle to get out and about because there is not enough seating available for them to rest. In order to encourage more older people to venture out to their local shops, Age Friendly Nottingham is helping local businesses to understand the importance of offering a seat to an older person.Older people know that a venue is taking part because they have a ‘We are Age Friendly’ sticker displayed in their window. People can also find out who is signed up by taking a look at the ‘Take a Seat’ webpageCouncillor Alex Norris said: “It’s vital that we help older people stay independent and get out into their local communities. Loneliness and isolation are both significant and pressing problems for our ageing population. It can have a damaging effect on physical health, so it’s important that business and shops get on board.”

HIGH PRAISE FOR MARIA’S SPECIAL CLIFTON DONATION GROUP Three years ago, Clifton woman Maria Watson set up a not-for-profit Facebook group to raise money to provide donations to various people, including hampers for families who are struggling and help to elderly care homes.Last year, they gifted £600 in vouchers to local schools. The group basically helps people in need within the communities of Clifton, Ruddington and Silverdale. Maria has had a Nottingham City Transport bus named after her in recognition of her dedication and had work. She said: “In three years, we have gifted over 340 food hampers to families that have had nowhere to turn.“We run a free disability loan scheme of wheelchairs, crutches and zimmer frames for people within our community, as sometimes waiting for help from other organisations encounters a waiting list.“We have provided help to victims of a house fires and victims of theft and also families that have suffered domestic violence.“Two years ago, we gifted every school in Clifton a total of £100 of shopping vouchers to help fund a Christmas party and also gifted food hampers

of values of £100 and over to elderly care homes.“I was honoured to be awarded the title ‘Clifton Superhero’ on behalf of the group back in April, along with three other people who got the award for their own personal achievements.“Donations of clothes, toys, shoes and other such items are are always welcome if they are in resaleable condition.”The group can be found on Facebook under ‘Clifton Ruddington & Silverdale Donation Group’.

CONCERT BAND PERFORMS FOR CLIFTON RESIDENTSNottingham Concert Band helped local people get into the Christmas spirit with an afternoon of musical entertainment for residents and guests at Lark Hill Retirement Village in Clifton.Under the musical direction of Robert Parker and with interjections from co-presenters Keith Popplewell and Geoff Soar, the band opened with Vivian Ellis’ evocative Coronation Scot - remembered by many in the audience as the ‘Paul Temple’ theme.

The first half continued through a medley of Broadway hits, including Leroy Anderson’s Syncopated Clock and music from the 50s swashbuckler The Crimson Pirate. During the latter, the more observant members of the audience spotted the special guest appearance of a red parrot, peering out from the top of a bassoon. The second half was dedicated to more seasonal tunes and included some new pieces for 2015. The hauntingly beautiful Normandy Carol was followed by a lively romp through the Pogues’ Fairytale of New York, with the concert closing with a singalong to Slade’s perennial favourite - Merry Christmas Everybody

LOCAL GIRLS DONATE HAIR FOR CHARITY Two young local sisters have been growing their hair in order to donate to the Little Princess Trust, a registered charity that makes wigs for children suffering with illnesses that result in hair loss.Bronwen (17) and Jasmine (14) had their hair cut, so they could make their donation to the charity, which ended up being nearly half a metre of hair! Their Mum, Corrina, said: “Jasmine has never been to a hairdressers and has had long hair her entire life. I am so proud of both of my girls.”Little Princess Trust’s Monica Glass said: “On behalf of all the children that The Little Princess Trust helps, I would like to say thank you to these two wonderful girls. “How selfless of Bronwen and Jasmine to think of others in this way. Their beautiful hair will be blended with other similar contributions and will be made into a wig for a poorly child. They are a true inspiration.”

The January sales are set to extend to Nottingham’s tram network at the start of 2016, with half-price travel being offered to tram users on four consecutive Sun-days during the month.

On Sunday, January 10, 17, 24, and 31 local residents and visitors to Nottingham can take the opportunity to explore the recently expanded tram network with adult day tickets being reduced from £4 to just £2.

Jamie Swift, NET Marketing Manager, explained: “Following what we expect to be our busiest ever Christmas period, we wanted to thank our regular customers for their enthusiastic support of the new network and also encourage even more people to discover the benefits of travel-ling around Nottingham on the tram.

“As well as discounted travel, customers will also be able to take advantage of over 5,000 free parking spaces across our 7 park & ride sites.”

The half-price tickets will be available to buy from all tram stop ticket machines by selecting the ‘adult day ticket’ option and customers must buy one before they board the tram. As usual, the family friendly 5 for £5 Group Ticket will also be available on each of the Half Price Sun-days, offering unlimited travel on the tram for two adults and up to three children.

Jamie added: “With trams in and out of the city centre every 10 minutes, our Half Price Sundays offer provides the ideal opportunity for people to discover just how easy, quick and convenient the tram is to use.”

The Latest Updates From The Tram

HALF PRICE SUNDAYS ON THE TRAM IN JANUARY

Bus and tram passengers have given a thumbs-up to the new bus and tram inter-change in Beeston which opened earlier this year.

The new interchange is an on-street trans-port hub with two tram stops and six bus bays and has been developed over the last decade in consultation with local bus operators. It features high-quality glass shelters, real time information, journey planning information and electronic ticket machines to purchase Kangaroo integrat-ed transport tickets and tram tickets.

After six weeks of full operation the County Council carried out a passenger survey as part of the Beeston Statutory Quality Bus Partnership monitoring.

The survey as a whole reveals a strong choice in favour of public transport, with 35% of passengers having access to a car but choosing not to use it for this trip. It also revealed a shift of 57% from people using the bus to the tram – a move which was anticipated.

The survey also gave respondents the chance to make further comments which the County Council can share with part-ners Broxtowe Borough Council and NET to make further improvements.

“These are very encouraging results for passenger satisfaction and safety, as well as travel behaviour and usage,” said Coun Kevin Greaves, chairman of the County Council’s transport and highways commit-tee. “The new interchange is a fantastic new facility for Beeston and makes it easy for passengers to swap between buses and trams, giving people more public transport options than ever before.”

THUMBS UP FOR NEW BUS & TRAM INTERCHANGE

Wollaton-born actress Vicky McClure has become the latest local figure to be recognised by Nottingham’s tram network with a new tram named in her honour.

The BAFTA TV Award winning star is best known for her role as ‘Lol’ in Shane Meadows’ critically acclaimed film This Is England and its subsequent TV series. She has also appeared in the much laud-ed BBC2 drama Line of Duty and ITV’s hugely successful Broadchurch.

Vicky is also set to star in the BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel The Secret Agent.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have been given the honour of having a tram named after me and to be in amongst some of the most illustrious names in Nottingham’s history. I’ve already become an avid user of the new tram system.”

Jamie Swift, NET Marketing Manager, commented: “Vicky is a fantastic young actress whose performances have con-nected with millions across the country.

“Through her work on screen and off it, Vicky continues to be a terrific role model for many of the talented youngsters this city produces and we’re delighted to be naming a new tram after her.”

12 BUSINESS FOCUS The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.comwww

MAKE 2016 YOUR SLIMMEST YEARObesity in the UK has reached an epidemic point, with so many people of all ages becoming very overweight, resulting in a rise in diabetes, as well as other problems such as painful back and joints generally.Last year alone, the Clifton Slimming World groups lost an astonishing 15,205lbs, that’s 1,086 stone and taking an average person’s weight, works out as the equivalent to just under 100 people. Unbelievable and none of it was done on a faddy diet or mega exercise regimes, but with good healthy family foods and lifestyle. New Year is the time when most of us make a resolution to lose weight and lots of us used to want a quick fix, only to feel deprived and miserable for the whole time (the cabbage diet

being the worst). If a diet means you can’t have a traditional roast dinner, favourite curry or pasta dish, then the chances are you’ll want to give up in a very short time. Then, when it’s all over and we get back to eating normally, the weight piles back on and usually even more. The Clifton area has three of the most wonderful consultants and five great groups waiting to welcome you. Jackie, Marion and Sacha are the consultants, who are trained not only in the eating plan but also to understand all the different aspects of losing weight and what it means to the individual. Each consultant is ready to help and inspire each member to lose weight and also to enjoy the journey. Just go along to any of the groups advertised or if you would like more information, don’t hesitate to call and the consultant will give you any further information you may need. Feel fantastic in 2016, it’s more than possible!

THINGS YOUR THERAPIST WANTS TO KNOW Climbing a ladder, making a change, coping with something different - they can all feel like an up-hill battle and we can’t always see what we are aiming for. Kate Blatherwick, at Freedom Therapy, provides a safe and professional service, tackling problems and finding solutions. Once you enter therapy you embark on a unique relationship/I need you to trust me. Trusting anyone with your deep, intimate issues is difficult and you may worry if the person you are seeing is qualified and experienced enough to deal with your problem. Look at the professional qualifications. You must be ready to help yourself. Therapy is there to help and guide you through life’s less positive experiences but therapy can only take you so far. By admitting to yourself that you are in need of help you have already taken a huge step towards things getting better. Don’t be afraid to talk about the difficult moments. It can be uncomfortable to discuss the bad bits. However, it can be therapeutic on its own to give them voice. I care about you. Good therapists practise ‘unconditional positive regard’, which means they accept and respect you without judgments.Call Kate Blatherwick on 07508 072372 or visit the website kateblatherwick.co.uk.

14 GARDENING Leaflet deliveries starting from just £25 per thousand

WINTER LAWNCARE INFORMATION FROM PROGRASSWinter is here and you may not know it but your lawn is under attack. Winter brings much less light because of the low sun, meaning your grass is experiencing very shady conditions compared to what it’s used to.Coupled with the cold and wet weather, this is perfect conditions for moss to spore. Moss creeps in almost unnoticed because of its green colour, but when it is left alone it soon starts to out-compete the grass and can cause severe damage to the lawn. If the moss is treated in the winter, before it gets a grip, then when Prograss come to do the spring treatment they can get a head start. They can put down a nice lively fertiliser that will green, strengthen and thicken the lawn, rather than having to apply a moss control giving it a perfect start to the year.Another problem at this time of the year is heavy rainfall which can leave gardens saturated and surface water sitting on the lawn for long periods of time. Some gardens can be particularly prone to this and the grass can get really stressed in these areas. Some forward thinking can help and solid tine aerating the lawn will reduce the compaction of the lawn and it will allow the water easier access to escape.

Our heavy duty commercial machines will punch thousands of holes in the surface enabling the water to drain away more easily. This is also really good for the lawn as it opens up the root zone to nutrients and water.

Prograss are your local, independent lawncare company and if you would like a free, no-obligation lawn health check for either a winter moss treatment, or a quote for solid tine aeration, please call Prograss on 01949 837367 or visit us on pro-grass.com.
