By Thomas Hewitt

A kind-hearted woman is helping raise funds for the treatment of a dog after it was left badly wounded.

Suzie, a 12-year-old Jack Russell, suffered horrific injuries to her torso following a vicious attack by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier outside Clifton Cornerstone, leaving her needing numerous stiches to her stomach in order to save her life.

Toni Lancaster, of Gardendale Avenue, Clifton, has since set up a donation page through the crowdfunding website Go Fund Me to pay for the vet costs, and so far she has raised more than £190.

Toni says she is now determined to raise the £850 needed in order to pay for Suzie’s vet bill.

She said: “I’ve set up the page because she is a sweet old dog who wouldn’t harm a fly and I couldn’t believe it when I heard how savage the attack was that happened on her.

“I know that Tracey Etches has also very kindly put collection tins in the Cornerstone Café to help raise more money for Suzie as well.

“I just hope that we can bring some peace to the family, so that they don’t have to struggle and know that we have a strong community here that looks out for one another.”

Suzie was saved from certain death by good Samaritan Alex

Widdowson, who was driving past the Cornerstone and stopped to pull the Staffordshire off Suzie’s torso.

The parcel courier from Ruddington has since been keeping in touch with Suzie’s owners Dave and Jean Peel following the attack, and says he could not stand by and watch a dog be innocently attacked.

He said: “I went with Dave last week to the vets in Ruddington and the vet said to us that if I had arrived 30 seconds later or I couldn’t have got it off Suzie, then she would have been dead.

“It makes me happy and proud to know that she’s still alive and see Dave and his family smiling,

because I know that Suzie means a lot to them and they love her to bits.

“I think more dog owners in Clifton should be more careful because things like this will happen if you don’t look after them properly.”

Dave and Joan Peel, of Rochester Walk, Clifton, say they are overwhelmed by the support the estate has shown them during the ordeal.

They said: “Suzie is getting better every day, and we can’t thank Toni, Alex and the people of Clifton enough for the kind support they have shown us during this difficult time.

“We just hope that owners will be more responsible and careful when they are out walking with their dogs in future.”

Staff and students from Central College Nottingham in Clifton were thinking of others this Easter, as they held a special bake-off to raise money for charity. The competition involved students on English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses and Central staff baking 11 impressive cakes. They raised just shy of £65 for Cancer Research UK by selling them off at the college. The winner of the competition was Beata Rzeszowska, who now lives in the Meadows and is originally from Poland. She won over the judges with her interesting and delicious cake which had a great mixture of spinach, cream cheese and pomegranate seeds. Beata was presented with a trophy at the event. This is the first year that students got involved in the bake-off, after a

successful staff event last year.Jane Needham, lecturer at Central, said: “We hope to make the bake-off an annual event. It was a lot of fun for a good cause and it had benefits for the students. “For example, they took part in literacy activities by researching recipes and practised their English through handing out flyers and talking to other students to promote the event.”

A team of 12 divers from Divemaster Scuba Nottingham travelled to a diver training college at York.

This was to experience the effects of pressure on the body by being pressurised in a Chamber to the equivalent of 50 metres.

The chamber is a recompression chamber normally used for divers with decompression sickness.

It is designed to take divers down to the depth needed to treat what is commonly known as the bends.

These sorts of chambers are most widely used in the context of scuba divers, both as a means of ensuring routine decompression from deep dives and as a way of correcting decompression sickness.

Underwater pressure is directly proportional to the increase in water depth, so the deeper a

person goes, the greater the atmospheric pressure and the more likely that a changing interplay of gasses will begin ensue.

There’s a lot of physics involved in scuba diving.

One of the most important issues here is that increasing pressure correlates to increased absorption of nitrogen, so that the deeper someone goes the more nitrogen enters his system.

Divers combat this phenomenon by taking care to ascend slowly. This ensures that, as the body acclimates, nitrogen bubbles don’t become too large to exit the blood and can be expelled through proper breathing.

08 NEWS For great value advertising email [email protected]@

A local resident is spearheading BBC Radio Nottingham's new-look Breakfast Show. Sarah Julian has been a regular on BBC Radio Nottingham for the past decade.

She has now she has teamed up with Andy Whittaker to bring the news to the people of Nottingham each weekday morning. Lets find out a bit more about Sarah...

Local resident spearheads new Breakfast Show at BBC Radio Nottingham1. I decided to go in to broadcasting because: I fell in love with radio as a child. Plus, I am very nosey and that’s perfect for this job.

2. Favourite thing about the job: Celebrating Nottinghamshire and having the privilege of meeting extraordinary people with exciting stories to tell.

3. Describe Andy in three words Persistent, generous and he's a good dad.

4. Before presenting the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Nottingham I was: Either presenting the Sunday faith show or live reporting on the Breakfast show, which included broadcasting from micro-light over Clumber Park, vaccinating badgers with Notts Wildlife Trust and interviewing miners as the last colliery closed.

5. If I wasn’t a broadcaster I would be: A librarian or a lifeguard. It's difficult

to say because I've always known I want to work in radio but I do love books and water.

6.Something people would be surprised to know about me is: I almost made it into the Guinness Book of Records for sending a message in a balloon to USA. They didn't believe me but it was true.

7. I’m looking forward to: Taking my children on an inter-railing adventure around Europe

8. My favourite thing about Nottingham is: The people - they're feisty, funny and not afraid to say what they really think

9. Nottingham in three words: Quirky, arty and historic

10. What advice would you give people wanting to get into broadcasting? Be flexible and resilient. Don't be afraid to try things which are challenging or unusual and stick at it through the knockbacks - there will be a few.

It’s no surprise the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is turning heads. Beautifully crafted from carbon fibre, aluminium and advanced composites, it’s a sports car with both remarkable agility and supercar performance. Weighing less than 1,000 kilograms, it has an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. And with advanced technologies directly inherited from Formula 1 and aerospace it achieves the perfect balance between elegance and engineering and is now ready to order at your local dealer.

4C SPIDER. PURE ALFA ROMEO.

Roll on summer - and if you’re seeking a super car to enjoy fun in the sun check out the new 4C Spider from Alfa Romeo.

Here is a drop-top that’s drop-dead gorgeous and it’s a car sure to attract much attention when displayed by the Alfa Romeo dealership of Chris Variava at the Nottingham Motor Show at Woollaton Hall over the weekend of June 4 and 5.

Clearly, the iconic Italian brand has produced a truly outstanding model in the 4C. Take your pick from the original coupe version or the Spider with a roll-up soft-top that can be stowed in the boot. Together they signal the dawn of an exciting new era for the manufacturer that will see the launch of the first-ever Alfa Romeo SUV plus new sports saloons to rival the 3- and 5-Series cars from BMW. Currently, the UK line-up is restricted to the 4C, plus MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks with all available through Chris Variava’s Alfa Romeo showroom at Nottingham Road, Basford, one of the brand’s leading dealerships in the UK.

Choose a 4C and you’ll enjoy a compact two-seater that’s not only exceptionally beautiful but also one with an outstanding turbocharged, mid-mounted engine which produces more power per litre than that of a Ferrari 458 Speciale.

It also boasts a lightweight chassis built from exotic carbon fibre, so, yes, is very much a scaled-down supercar.

It means the 4C is a pure driving machine, an uncompromised thoroughbred marking the flamboyant brand’s return to the world of lightweight sports coupes. Its natural beauty makes it a worthy descendent of one of the most beautiful coupes of all time: the Alfa

Romeo 33 Stradale.

Carbon-fibre was chosen for the one-piece monocoque because of its high levels of structural rigidity and exceptionally low weight and the car is built using sophisticated Formula 1-derived technologies. Sheet Moulding Compound, which is lighter than both steel and aluminium, is used for the bodywork and even the thickness of the glass has been slimmed down by 15% to help reduce the overall weight.

Acceleration is stunning. The car storms from rest to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of160mph.

But this supercar performance isn’t

at the expense of the environment. The car’s light weight plus the advanced engine and transmission technologies ensure emissions of the 4C fall well within the strict limits of Euro 6. Its official combined-cycle fuel economy figure is 41.5mpg and its CO2 emissions are 157g/km.

In the cabin a multi-function, digital display occupies the instrument binnacle in place of traditional dials and the steering wheel is a bespoke, flat-bottomed, two-spoke one with integrated paddle gear-shifters. The remaining controls are grouped together on the tunnel console, including the button-operated TCT transmission selector and the DNA system selector. The DNA system alters the operational parameters of the engine, transmission, ESC and electronic Q2 differential depending on the driver’s requirements.

With composite bucket seats and aluminium pedals, too, the minimalistic, driver-focussed cabin is, indeed, a good place to be, further reinforcing that the 4C is a truly special Alfa Romeo.

Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June

Place these dates in your diary or calendar – Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June. Yes, for the first time ever, the Nottingham Motor Show is taking place over two days instead of just one as in the past, giving you more time to visit this huge event in the local calendar.

The venue, as always, is within the grounds of magnificent Wollaton Hall, Nottingham (NG8 2AE), just a short drive from the city centre.

It’s welcome back again to Autocentral, Central College Nottingham’s automotive centre, which is once again this fantastic event’s main sponsor.

Saturday 4th June is ‘New Model Preview Day Only’

Saturday is an ideal time to check out the latest models from the largest number of car manufacturers ever to be seen at the Nottingham Motor Show, entry

to which is FREE, but car parking charges will apply.

Due to their popularity last year, new motorcycles will be displayed, too.

Main Show Sunday 5th June

On Sunday, those shiny new vehicles will be joined by historic vehicles from the past, as the

legendary Autokarna is back with its displays of vintage and veteran vehicles, heritage buses and tractors, classic cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and classic caravans.

A ‘Concours Parade’ will also feature a number of these historic vehicles in action, and the Autokarna will also enable you to

relive and experience the golden days of classic caravanning.

In addition, you can also enjoy rummaging through all the treasures and motoring memorabilia in the huge auto-jumble sale.

Fun For All The Family

There will be plenty for children to see and do too, as they can enjoy the thrills offered by the fairground rides, attractions, face painting along with street and puppet theatre. Craft and charity stalls, refreshments and live-music will all combine to bring fun times for all members of your family, whatever their age! And, you’ll be able to put your feet up and enjoy a drink and refreshments.

Organisers Crowdpullers Events are excited about this years 2 day event. But stress if you are serious about buying a new car then Saturday is the day to attend. Classic cars will not be present until Sunday as per previous years.

Nottingham’s largest showroom comes to town this June

New Kia Sportage to feature at Nottingham Motorshow 2016UK drivers have given the new Kia Sportage a huge thumbs-up with 10,000 orders for the model placed during its first two months on sale in this country.

Never before has a new Kia proved so popular in the UK and during March the compact SUV accounted for 46% of the brand’s total sales here.

Owners of previous Sportage models and new customers have taken the latest range to their hearts and it’s a vehicle certain to attract much attention when it’s displayed by the Nottingham Kia dealership of NK Motors at next month’s motor show.

Kia has produced a winner by creating a car that’s stylish as well as practical with the super-duper SUV further appealing by having a real classy feel while also featuring more efficient engines together with advanced driver assistance technology.

Altogether 18 versions of the fourth-generation model are available, priced from £17,995 and including a new GT-Line trim level for drivers seeking a particularly sporty Sportage.

These versions stand alone in being powered by a new 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox while other models have extensively re-engineered 1.6-litre GDi petrol and 1.7- and 2.0-litreturbodiesel power units delivering improved fuel economy and CO2 reductions of up to 29g/km, which means significantly lower company car tax for the Sportage’s loyal legions of business drivers.

Kia has won legions of fans by offering drivers a lot for their money and in the case of the new Sportage buyers get an extensive spread of equipment.

Features common across he range include Trailer Stability Assist, Hill-start Assist, Downhill Brake Control and cruise control with speed limiter.

An increased wheelbase has made the five-seat cabin more spacious with greater legroom and headroom front and rear. Boot capacity has risen by 26 litres at 491 litres with all seats in use or 1,480 litres when they’re folded.

Add a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP plus the company’s unique-in-the-UK seven-year/100,000-mile warranty which is fully transferable should the car be sold before the time or mileage limits have been reached and the new Sportage represents an attractive proposition for anyone considering a compact SUV/crossover vehicle.

t.i.m Motors are delighted to announce that as of June 2016 they are the of official Abarth dealer for the Nottingham area.

Abarth is an Italian racing brand and with a great tradition of developing and upgrading compact sports cars.

“We’re very pleased to welcome t.i.m Motors as the of official home of Abarth for Nottingham,” said Gerry Southerington, Abarth Brand Manager. “These stylish and powerful little cars are a perfect addition to their dealership.”

Back in 1949, Carlo Abarth wanted to build road cars with racing elements by having performance stemming from excellent tuning and set-up, to get the very best from every machine.

Today, that philosophy is still serving Abarth well, as evidenced by the impressive range of small, precise handling cars with mean little engines. The latest of which is the Abarth 124 Spider, available to

pre-order now and in showrooms this September.

“It’s exciting for us to be involved in this historic brand, with its strong ties to motor racing and performance,” said Phil Henery, t.i.m Motors. “They’re engaging, agile compact cars – we’re looking forward to the challenge of keeping up with them!”

Carlo Abarth founded the Abarth & C. S.p.A. with Cisitalia racing driver Guido Scagliarini in Bologna in 1949 using his astrological sign, the Scorpion, as the company logo.

The first vehicle produced was a 204 A Roadster, based on the FIAT 1100. It immediately won the 1100 Sport Championship as well as Formula 2.

Alongside racing, the company started to produce tuning kits that improved performance, power and speed of standard vehicles.

In the following years, the Abarth brand continuously and incessantly made a name for itself in the public mind as the synonym for sport, tuning and performance, changing the sports car world.

Today, over 65 years on from its origins, Carlo Abarth’s vision to take modest everyday cars and achieve levels of performance through design and engineering excellence is more alive than ever and apparent in the Abarth 595, Turismo, Competizione and Biposto 695 models.

The second of a two part Your Local Motors special on Chris Variava. Last month we heard how Chris Variava began, read on to see how the company has gone from strength to strength.

Chris continues: “We’ve added the franchises of Alfa Romeo, Jeep and Suzuki to our portfolio over the last few years and enjoyed great success with them. It means that have been able to offer a wide range of desirable vehicles to customers which bring them into our showroom. Our used car selection also offers motorists a huge amount of choice and quality”

Jeep is one of the fastest growing automotive franchises in the UK with the brand’s first compact SUV, the Renegade hitting the spot! The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV electric-hybrid SUV has been a magnificent success story for Mitsubishi and the New L200 Pick-up has been warmly welcomed. The L200 has always been a best-seller and this new generation model has just

been voted “Best Pick-up” by Auto Express.

Suzuki’s sleek new Baleno is set to debut here soon, bringing with it incredible engine and hybrid technology. The New Vitara is selling very strongly too along with the Celerio city car offering the best turning circle in its class, low CO2 emissions and an ultra low combined fuel consumption figure of 65.7mpg.

Chris Variava continues: “Of course, many things have changed over the last three decades but the fundamental principals remain

the same, and that’s looking after customers. While our franchises have certainly helped the business flourish, it is the people within our fantastic team who have played a major role in the success of the company.

They all have a remit to look after customers, and each and every member of our team works closely to ensure that all our customers gain the finest possible service.

Word of mouth recommendation is important and many of our current customers have been with us since day one.

They’ve bought cars and continue to have them maintained by us. Indeed, we are now seeing their children visiting our dealership to buy vehicles or to use the facilities offered by our workshop operation.”

“I’d like to thank all our customers for their loyalty and their business over the past 30 years of Chris Variava Ltd’s existence. I’d also like to thank the team for their unswerving commitment to the business and I know that without their hard work and dedication, we wouldn’t be here today as a successful, locally-based enterprise. Here’s to the next 30 years.”

Chris Variava Ltd is in a position to provide for all your motoring requirements. Our beliefs make us the person that we are. Our beliefs were absorbed and created.

Our beliefs are then fine-tuned right from when we were very young through to now.

But what if we have unhelpful, limiting beliefs.

These things might be “I’m not good enough” or “nothing will ever change, that’s just the way life is”?

Henry Ford famously quoted: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right”.

If we don’t challenge ourselves, nothing will change.

If you do what we’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got!

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that.

We can’t change other people but we can change ourselves, our behaviours and our beliefs.

If you ever find yourself thinking or saying “I can’t because...”.

Challenge that belief by adding “but I could if...”.

What do you want to change? Ask yourself “what’s stopping me?”

Clifton teenager Montel Nevers is aiming for the pinnacle of any sportsperson by competing in the Olympic Games.

Rio 2016 is probably a bit to soon for the triple jump athlete, but Tokyo 2020 is in his sights.

The 19-year-old is currently at Leeds University doing a Geography degree.

As a youngster, he attended Dovecote Primary, Farnborough Secondary School and then Emmanuel School.

Back in 2011, he won the Nottingham Post Student of the Year competition.

His triple jump medals are already mounting up and his success on the track has been fantastic.

Montel won his first national championship at the age of 14 and won the English school title three times at each age category from junior to intermediate and senior.

He has already broken the BUCS indoor championship record and represented Great Britain juniors last year. He also came fifth at European juniors in Sweden.

Montel told The Local News: “This year’s aims for me are very simple and it is mainly to get selected for European Seniors.

“My personal best is 16.15 indoors and qualification for the European Seniors is 16.55.

“I do think about the Olympic Games in Rio this year and the qualifiction for that is 16.85.

“I am not far away from that qualification standard.

“I have not jumped outside this year yet, so I am hopeful.

“To be honest, my main target is the 2017 World Championship.

“That event takes place in London and I watched the Olympics as a kid, so would love to be there.”

Kate Blatherwick: What do you believe? Montel aiming high for the Olympics

10 GARDENING Find us on Facebook.com/nottslocalnews

The density of new housing has increased over the years and new houses have been built onto old plots.

Combine this with a greater wish to be outdoors in the sunshine, using the garden to entertain friends and relax in means the issue of privacy has become ever more important.

This creates both challenges and opportunities for effective landscaping.

We have all heard of neighbours falling out as a result of conifer hedging that gets out of control, blocking light and air, in the desire to have some screening.

Thankfully, with a bit of knowledge and thought, more successful means are available that will tick all the boxes.

This is so the customer gets the privacy they wish for.

It also doesn’t impact on their neighbours and still complies with the laws and Acts that do exist to curb excesses.

New fencing needs usually to be under two meters tall, as does hedging, without the specific

agreement from your neighbour.

In my experience, from a landscape designer’s point of view, privacy is very high on the customer’s wish list.

Being overlooked by neighbours or passers-by can be dealt with effectively and yet still achieve a pleasant outcome.

As more people use their garden as an extension of their home, patios, hot tubs and play areas, all become more on view. So things that didn’t use to be a problem, suddenly become serious issues.

The key to success on this matter is discussing the requirements with the customer and a careful examination and survey of the site.

Changes made to the garden that may effect privacy, must be made sympathetically with any legal constraints.

Trees may have Preservation Orders on them (TPOs) and cannot be touched without council permission.

Decking that sits over 300mm (1 foot) above the existing ground level, must make sure to have planning permission.

There are so many nice ways that can be found to screen and make the garden more attractive to the benefit of the home owner, their neighbours and the environment as well.

Doing it properly first time will save money and potentially an unnecessary fallout between neighbours.

We have been building high quality gardens locally for over 25 years.

11The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

Dare we say that we can look past winter and start thinking about what we should be doing in the garden now a seemingly second spring has arrived?

We have had a strange few months weather wise, which has been almost back to front, with a late, short and cold winter that seems to have followed an early spring.

These conditions have combined to make lawns very green, wet and mossy.

Now is the time to get organised and contact Prograss.

Prograss are your local, independent, qualified, lawn specialists and they can give you a free, no-obligation lawn health check and report on how to make your garden look fantastic in 2016.

If your lawn looks good and healthy then the rest will follow suit and it will also make you want to make the effort to get out in the fresh air and enjoy doing the borders, etc.

Prograss make sure they use only the highest quality products on your garden.

These are applied with professional equipment and the process in undertaken by qualified operators.

What usually surprises Prograss customers is more often than not the price is not far away from what you would pay if you bought less-effective products yourself from garden centres.

Also, if mechanical treatments are required - hollow tine aeration and scarification - Prograss use the best heavy duty, commercial machinery that is suitable for domestic gardens.

Treatments start at just £15 and for your free lawn health check, please contact Prograss by telephoning 01949 837367 or email them at [email protected].

Visit their new, information-packed website at pro-grass.com.

Prograss is a lawn care company with a difference

Many factors will affect your lawns health and looks. Understanding those reasons takes a lot of training and work experience.

Your lawn will be assessed by a trained agronomist with over 25 years' experience. The assessment will be detailed to allow an individual programme that will maximise the potential of your lawn. The results will be obvious.

Make sure you spring forward with a quality Prograss lawn

16 SPORT The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

The Devizes to Westminster race starts in the small rural town of Devizes in Wiltshire and follows the Kennet and Avon Canal until it meets the Thames in Reading. From Reading, the Thames passes through the well-known towns of Henley and Marlow until you reach the outskirts of London.

The river then widens as the tidal part of the river below Teddington is reached. This is the most daunting part of the race, paddling under bridge after bridge until you reach Westminster Bridge and the finish.

Nottingham Kayak Club had four entries into this iconic race in 2016. Alex Abraham and Sarah Millest were taking part in the Senior Singles race, racing over four days.

Kat Wilson & Alexandra Lane and Paul Lowe & Gary Lowe were taking on the race in the Senior Doubles class – paddling straight through from start to finish, with 125 miles of paddling and 77 locks to portage on the way.

Alex and Sarah set off on Good Friday, racing the first stage from Devizes to Newbury along the canal. Around half the locks are tackled in this day, making it tiring.

Alex finished the day in third place, Sarah in 25th (fourth lady). The weather on Easter Saturday was not so pleasant, with a strong wind making the paddling tough. This stage took the competitors from Newbury to Marlow, on the

Thames. Alex held onto third place, whilst Sarah climbed to 22nd (second lady). The weather took a turn for a worse on Easter Sunday – the third day of racing proving tough with a strong head wind making the river very choppy.

This stage took racers from Marlow to Teddington. Alex again maintained third place, with Sarah gaining another place to 21st (second lady).

Unfortunately, the fourth day of racing was cancelled because of storm Katie, resulting in Nottingham finishing on the podium with Alex in third place and Sarah as second lady. Meanwhile, on Easter Saturday the straight through

Senior Doubles crews were setting off. The straight through race is the main event – an ultra-marathon, test of body and mind. Paul, Gary and Kat were taking on their eighth Devizes to Westminster races. This is special as eight completions gains you entry to the 1000 mile club. Paul & Gary set off on their attempt ahead of Kat & Alex. Both crews made good progress down the canal, coping well with the mud making portages slippery and weed

clogging up the canal. Support crews did their job, feeding and watering the crews and ensuring they stayed warm as darkness, and the temperature fell.

From the canal the crews paddled out onto Thames. Paul & Gary were going well, making good progress between checkpoints. Kat & Alex were flying – way ahead of the current ladies record time and looking good to break it definitively.

Moving from the Thames to the Tideway, the tidal part of the Thames, means entering the last and most challenging phase of this race. Both crews held it together and paddled strongly to the finish.

Kat & Alex finished in 17 hours 59 minutes – breaking the current ladies record by over 45 minutes. Not only had they broken the ladies record but they’d finished second overall in the Senior Doubles class; the first time an all-female crew has made the podium.

Paul & Gary finished in 22 hours 13 minutes, 23rd in the Senior Doubles class. Paul, Gary and Kat had all achieved their eighth Devizes to Westminster finish and gained entry to the elusive 1000 mile club.

Success for local residents in Devizes to Westminster race
