BLS Initial / Recertification

• Basic Life Support Initialand Recertification

• Prerequisite: Study materials to prepare

• The BLS class is designed to recertify current card holders every two years. The BLS Class take approximately 3.5 hours with extra time allotted for first time students. Intranet Sign‐up is Mandatory. BLS books are available for purchase in the Gift Shop. A study guide is available on the Intranet > Department Tab > Clinical Education & Research page. Sign in 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. Late arrivals will not be allowed to attend the class once the door is closed. For your convenience, please use this link to access study guides: http://umcintranet/departments/ClinicalEducation.aspx

ACLS Initial Certification•The Initial Advanced Cardiac Life Support class addresses how to assess and manage the care of the adult patient at risk for cardiac or pulmonary complications including cardiac arrest. Participant should have a basic knowledge of EKG Rhythm interpretation. A four hour prep class is available for sign up on the intranet, and encouraged for first time ACLS students. The class is done over two eight hour days. This class includes a full BLS recertification. ACLS books are available for purchase in the Gift Shop. A study guide is available on the Intranet, under Clinical Education & Research.Curriculum: 2 days Didactic and Clinical Practice

NRP Initial/RecertificationThis online course is completed with An “Instructor‐Led” Event.  The NRP program at UMC is intended for staff caring for neonates. You must register for this class through Success Factors.  In this classroom event the important concepts of NRP, the NRP algorithm, and team roles are emphasized with a series of simulated neonatal emergency cases.  This is a 2.5‐3 hour class. You must complete the online training first and bring your “Certificate of Completion” to class in order to participate.

• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

• Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) is an evidenced based course developed by the Emergency Nurse Association (ENA) to establish a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge and to improve the care of all trauma patients. It is a compilation of current trauma nursing standards and a valuable resource for future reference. This intensive 2 day course combines interactive learning with scenario‐based assessments to give nurses a comprehensive learning experience. it  includes: A Systematic Approach of Initial Assessment and Hands‐on Training Using both an Individual and Team Approach. Please sign up early to allow plenty of time to complete the online modules and study the book provided with registration.

• Prerequisite: RNs & other hospital staff where their jobs require this skill

• This 3‐hour course is designed for medical students participating in a rotation in the Surgery Department or other healthcare personnel who work in a procedural area and wish to refresh their skills. The class includes proper scrub wear, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, discussion of proper OR demeanor, differences between various masks, gowns, and gloves, demo and return demo of scrubbing, assisted and unassisted gowning and gloving, and sterile exam gloving.

• This 2‐3 day mandatory course is designed to provide information about the Surgery Dept for all new employees. DAY ONE includes general information about procedures, processes, and protocols in the Surgery Department, while DAY TWO includes content specifically for perioperative Registered Nurses. DAY THREE (optional for some job descriptions) includes a self‐guided, all‐day tour of the Surgery Department designed to assist new staff members with department layout, and understand the roles and responsibilities of each unit (ASU, PACU, SPD, Main OR, Anesthesia, Endoscopy, and Trauma OR) within the department that contribute to perioperative patient care.  Additional orientation activities include a mini‐tour of the Surgery Department and the scavenger hunt.
