ACLS Initial Certification•The Initial Advanced Cardiac Life Support class addresses how to assess and manage the care of the adult patient at risk for cardiac or pulmonary complications including cardiac arrest. Participant should have a basic knowledge of EKG Rhythm interpretation. A four hour prep class is available for sign up on the intranet, and encouraged for first time ACLS students. NRP Initial/RecertificationThis online course is completed with An “Instructor‐Led” Event. The NRP program at UMC is intended for staff caring for neonates. You must register for this class through Success Factors. In this classroom event the important concepts of NRP, the NRP algorithm, and team roles are emphasized with a series of simulated neonatal emergency cases. This is a 2.5‐3 hour class. This course design provides 172 classroom didactic hours, and 256 practical hours in all Critical Care units including Medical Intensive Care, Neuro/Surgical Intensive Care, Trauma Intensive Care, Adult Trauma and Emergency Departments, Cardiovascular and Cardiac Care Units, the Burn Care Unit and PACU.

• Epidural Initial Skills Lab Training Class. This training is required for any nurse caring for patients with continuous epidural infusions and evidence of annual competency needs to be maintained in the nurse’s education file.

• This 1 hour program provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide epidurally administered narcotics in a safe and effective manner.

• Prior to attending this program each participant must complete Part 1: Online Department Specific power point and test for Epidural Initial Certification.

• This class provides the second part of a 2 step‐process for the RN’s for initial certification.

• Participants will complete a competency evaluation during the session.

• Discontinuation of epidural catheters will be performed by RN’s who have been had additional educational training and competency evaluation in a different skills session.

• This class is designed for OR, PACU, and ASU nurses. It will discuss the characteristics of children throughout the pediatric age groups. Assessment will be covered in detail along with Airway management and the unique challenges presenting in the pediatric population. Fluid management and common pediatric medications will also be covered. Transporting pediatric patients not only in the surgical area but across the hospital to the pediatric units along with safety tips will be discussed. • The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program was developed to meet the educational needs of healthcare providers who must deliver important stabilization care to newborn infants. A uniform, simple, standardized process of care and comprehensive team approach can improve the infant’s overall stability, safety, and outcome. It is an 8 hour course taught by NICU nurses certified to teach the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program and is encouraged for all NICU RNs.

• Wound Care (S.O.S.) Skin Care Class and More




• This program will provide nursing staff with knowledge and tools to care for patients’ skin. Methods to prevent facility‐acquired pressure ulcers will be discussed and demonstrated utilizing skin care products, positioning techniques, mattress surfaces and appropriate specialty bed selection. Risk factors predisposing development of skin breakdown will be reviewed. Focus will also be placed on documentation priorities utilizing the interdisciplinary plan of care and patient medical records. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, rectal drainage tubes and Foley catheter skills will also be included in this training.

• CVCU Open Heart Skills Lab




• This program will enhance the critical care nurse's RN's knowledge of procedural skills necessary to provide care for patients admitted for open heart surgery. Skill stations may include the following procedures: pacemakers, hemodynamics/ pharmacology scenarios, hemodynamic line set ups, mock cardiac codes, admission of open heart patients room set ‐up , post‐operative incisional care, infection prevention, chest tubes, STS core measures, femstop and transradial band removal and cardiac rehab patient education.

• Purpose: To learn initial set‐up and maintenance care of patients with chest tube; to practice mock code. Objective: For nursing staff to demonstrate the appropriate skills and competency in the care of patients with chest tube drainage

• Prerequisite: RNs & other hospital staff where their jobs require this skill

• This 3‐hour course is designed for medical students participating in a rotation in the Surgery Department or other healthcare personnel who work in a procedural area and wish to refresh their skills. The class includes proper scrub wear, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, discussion of proper OR demeanor, differences between various masks, gowns, and gloves, demo and return demo of scrubbing, assisted and unassisted gowning and gloving, and sterile exam gloving.

• This 1‐hour course is designed for surgical/obstetrical and dental residents participating in residency rotation in the OR. The class includes surgical attire/personal protective equipment (PPE) use, fire safety, consents, strategies to reduce surgical site infections and patient advocacy. This class is offered during Resident Orientation in June.

• This 2‐3 day mandatory course is designed to provide information about the Surgery Dept for all new employees. DAY ONE includes general information about procedures, processes, and protocols in the Surgery Department, while DAY TWO includes content specifically for perioperative Registered Nurses. DAY THREE (optional for some job descriptions) includes a self‐guided, all‐day tour of the Surgery Department designed to assist new staff members with department layout, and understand the roles and responsibilities of each unit (ASU, PACU, SPD, Main OR, Anesthesia, Endoscopy, and Trauma OR) within the department that contribute to perioperative patient care. Additional orientation activities include a mini‐tour of the Surgery Department and the scavenger hunt.
