“The Beef With Cloned Meat” Article…SOURCE: Scientific American Magazine (via EBSCOHost)

DATE: March 2007 -- AUTHOR: “The Editors”

Summary…• In January 2007, FDA says “food (including milk) from cloned cattle, swine

and goats is ‘likely to be as safe as’ that from non-cloned animals.”

• PROS: yield elite animals with desirable traits such as general good health, disease resistance, greater productivity, and leaner, tastier meat without growth stimulants

• CONS: cloned-based pregnancies result in more miscarriages, birth defects, deformities, and premature deaths than other methods (counter: FDA disputes this in comparison); over-reliance means a single disease could “wipe out” a whole species; cloned meat could be shunned overseas (example: Peru banned all GM foods)

ULTIMATELY...“Considering that the public has already been eating meat manipulated by high-

tech means, an open debate might help inform or overcome skepticism about animal cloning.”
