Clothes dryer types

Clothes dryers come in various sizes, and size affects energy consumption. The EnerGuide label categorizes clothes dryers as standard and compact.

The energy rating for clothes dryers is based on 416 operations per year.

Standard clothes dryers

Standard clothes dryers include all standard-size front-loading models.

Compact clothes dryers

Compact clothes dryers include both 120- and 240-volt models with capacities of less than 125 litres.

Buying a clothes dryer

• Manydryershavesensorsthatshutthedryeroffwhentheclothes are dry. This saves energy and wear and tear on clothes.

• Onesecretofgettingthemostoutofyourdryerisinthewasher. The spin cycle takes less energy than the dryer to removethesameamountofwaterfromclothes.Buyaclothes washer that does an exceptional job of spin drying – an ENERGY STAR qualified washer. Clothes will be drier as you take them out of the washer, thereby reducing drying time.

Saving energy and money

• Besuretoreadtheowner’smanual.Ithashelpfulhintsforoperatingyourdryeratoptimumefficiency.

• Donotputdrippingwetclothesintoyourdryer;itwillhavetoworkextrahardandextralongandusemoreenergy.Dryersaredesignedtohandledamp,notwet,clothes.Wringoutwetclothesorspintheminthewasherfirst.

• Avoiddryingpartialloads.

• Fillbutdonotoverfill,becausetoomuchclothingblocksairflow,lengthensdryingtimeandoverworksthemachine.

• Sortclothesbythicknessbeforewashing.Ashirtwilldrymuchfasterthanatowel,especiallyifitispartlysynthetic.Putthin,quick-dryingitemsinoneloadandthickeritems,suchastowels,inanother.

• Usethedryercontinuously,oneloadrightafteranother.Thisway,thedryerremainswarm,doesnothavetore-heatandsavesenergy.

• Donotrunthedryertoolong.Overdryingnotonlyusesmoreelectricitybutalsoincreasesshrinking,wrinklesandwear.Mostloadsdryin40to60minutes.

• Watchoutforunintentionaloverdrying.Itmaymeanthatthehumiditysensorsarenolongeraccurateandthedryerneedsservicing.

• Tosavemoneyandreduceshrinking,usethe“cooldown”cycle,usuallythe“perma-press”setting.Here,theheatisoffforthelastfewminutesanddryingcontinuesascoolairisblownthroughtumblingclothes.

• Cleanthelintscreenafterorbeforeeachload.Afullscreencancauseyourdryertoconsumeupto30percentmoreenergy.
