Mike Goldman, aka Baller, (junior) at practice Miami University Club Tennis A Writer’s Note Another club tennis season and another newsletter. Get ready because this year’s newsletters will be off the hizzle fashizzle (whatever that means). For those who are new, I write monthly newsletters that are sent to all club members and club alumni. Everyone always enjoys them (at least that’s what they say). The newsletters always include snippets of what’s going on in the club, recaps of club matches, a list of future competition dates, player spotlights, and pictures. In the past, I’ve made the newsletters kind of formal. Well, that’s getting flushed. I think the newsletters should be fun, informal, and maybe a tad bit more interesting. I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to do that yet, but we’ll see. We do have quite a spontaneous club president who might be able to provide me with some funny stuff (he’s also a little better than last year’s president). Take note, our club team does have a twitter: MiamiClubTennis. The tweets are usually pretty good. Tweets include practice updates, random non-sensible quotes from tournaments, and other important information. So if you are a tweeter, well then be a twit and follow this twitter! Everyone is more than welcome to send me club tennis photos to put in the newsletters or if there’s anything in particular you’d like put in, just let me know. I would actually like some input (hint, hint). Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this year’s newsletters because I put as much work into them as Charlie Sheen does with his jokes. -KM October 2011 Vol. II, Issue 1 Badger Classic at University of Wisconsin – Madison October 28-29 Upcoming Competition Dates: Officers Co Presidents : Christian Dailey & Abby Schiller Vice President : David Ruedi Secretary : Caroline Bennett Treasurers : Mike Goldman & Meghan Reed Public Relations : Katie Mark Social Chair : Brett Ausubel Fundraising Chair : Katie Fidelholtz By: Katie Mark

A Writer’s Note Another club tennis season and another newsletter.

Everyone is more than welcome to send me club tennis photos to put in the newsletters or if there’s anything in particular you’d like

put in, just let me know. I would actually like some input (hint, hint).

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this year’s newsletters because I put as much work into them as Charlie Sheen does with his jokes.

Commencing the 2011-2012 Season

Practices at the Hepburn tennis courts began in early September with about 60 new members joining the

team. The first few weeks have seen unpredictable weather. In the beginning, the heat/humidity made us

question if we were actually in Ohio, because anyone with an IQ of at least 40 would think it was more like

Florida weather. Then the weather gods did a total 360 and plagued us with rainy/cold weather (like really?).

So far we’ve had one club tennis party. It was pretty hoppin’. Lots of people, most of whom no one

knew (interesting?). It was at Brett’s, aka the Social Chair’s (yes, social chair is a club position), humble

abode, which looks/feels more like a bachelor pad

(Entourage should look into it). If you were not there (cough, cough, Baller), well then, next time clear your

schedule and pencil in something important like this. These fun parties come and go like Roddick’s backhand

or some members at practices (Brett?).

The Badger Classic at the

University of Wisconsin – Madison is the first tourney of the year. It’s at the end of

Vice President – David Ruedi Junior and vice president of the club is

David Ruedi. David started taking lessons when he was thirteen in his hometown of Champaign, Illinois. As David got older, he fell in love with the sport. Because his mom always played tennis, she supported David once he got really into it. Yet, David credits his first coach as the one who got him hooked on playing tennis.

David believes he learned a lot from his first coach and he always felt the lessons were really fun. Once he reached high school, David began putting in countless hours practicing everyday. During the summers, he’d see the court 4-5 hours each day. His first tournament he competed in was at age 13, but once he was 15, he started to compete in at least one tournament each month. David’s older sister and brother attended Miami University. Every time he would visit, he realized how much he loved the campus and he knew it was a perfect fit. He had visited other schools, but Miami always stuck in his mind as being the most enjoyable. As a finance major, David aspires to start his own financial management business in the future. David’s favorite place in Oxford is his fraternity house. He lived in the Beta house last year and he noted it as one of the most fun times in his life. As a resident of Western campus his freshman year he ate at Alexander dining hall a lot, he still occasionally likes to go their for a Sunday brunch.

Player Spotlight: Brett Ausubel

What do you want to do after college?: I want to start my own company after I graduate or go back to school for my Masters in Business Management. How do you like being social chair?: It’s great! I get to meet all the players off the court in a more friendly environment. Also, planning parties with friends is always fun. Any hobbies?: I really like going hiking and kayaking in my spare time. If it’s an outdoors activity, I’m game! Favorite spot on campus?: The rec. It’s where I can clear my head. Favorite place uptown?: I like Kofenya (to hang out with friends) and Skippers and 45 East for some fun on the weekends. Favorite dining hall?: Bell Tower

From: St. Louis, MO Major: Urban Design and Entrepreneurship When did you start tennis? Why?: Started when I was 5. My parents wanted me to focus on one sport. Also, I was always curious about the sport and after I started, I was hooked. What influenced you to play tennis?: I was competitive and wanted to win and many of my friends played tennis. Winning gave me such a rush.

October. If I remember correctly, last

year the club dominated the tournament. Needless to say, there

should be a repeat, especially since we’ve all been practicing really hard

and hitting the gym a couple hours a day.

In other great news, fellow member, Sarah Sidlow, has created a club tennis website.

You should definitely make it your homepage: http://sidlowsh.wordpress.com/. Also, we do

have a club Facebook page. It is private, so if you want to be apart of it, email the president or any

other officer and we’ll be sure to add you.
