    Market

    a) Market size and growth

The target markets for the SKF Laser Vibrometer are in the area of advanced conditionmonitoring and quality assurance technology for end-of-line testing applications (QA). Today, the Automotive industry represents 50% of sales volume for laser vibrometers, the remaining50% are spread to other industries such as household appliances, electric motors, fans, computer drives and general industrial applications. 90% of the market of laser vibrometerstoday is in Europe, main reasons are high quality standards and expectations and also the highlevel of automized manufacturing processes. Asia represents 4% of today’s potential but thetendency shows increasing demand. End-of-line noise control demand increases, it is used toevaluate the acoustic behavior of mechanical products or components, but also for root cause

analyses (RCA) of “noisy” products in order to continuously improve the manufacturingprocesses. The market is expected to grow by 10% per year.

    b) Market trends

The world of technology becomes more and more complex and safety standards become anincreasingly important factor. So in many applications it will be in future beneficial, if serviceengineers can stay away from harsh environment or can keep more safe distances tomeasuring objects. Thus the non-contact SKF Laser Vibrometer is ideal for these monitoringchallenges.

In many OEM industries the pressure is increasing to guarantee 100% quality. SKF measuresthe noise of bearings at each production line (channel), other industries will face the samechallenges in future. Especially Automotive customers are forcing their suppliers to 100% inlinequality and function testing. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is ideal to be used for in-line noisetesting especially in noise critical applications such as electric motors, household appliances, fans, pumps and many more. The laser can simply be installed and allows flexible resetting forchanges in manufacturing batches.

    c) Technology trends

Substitution of mechanical sensor arrangements by laser vibrometer is a strong growing trend. The use of laser vibrometers in end-of-line testing, offers a more flexible solution and is alsomore cost effective than mechanical systems. Also the measurement results are better andstable because the signal is not influenced at all by mechanical systems.

Our potential SKF Laser Vibrometer customers are the following:

    • SKF bearing factories: The SKF Laser Vibrometer MSL-7000 A has become the standardsensor for noise testing machines for bearings made by CMC Steyr. It has been decided thatin future all new noise testing equipment will use the SKF Laser Vibrometer. It offers easierresetting, lower cost for sensor repair and easier calibration. We see also a tendency thatSKF factories will over time replace the old piezoelectric pickups by the laser system. Thishas a potential of some 20 to 30 pieces p.a. and will be sold directly from CMC Steyr tofactories of Automotive and Strategic Industries.

    • Other bearing industry: Bearings are products with almost 100% end-of-line noise

testing, there is also a large potential for refurbishment or sensor exchange. This has apotential of some 500 to 1,000 pieces especially in Asian factories.

    • Condition monitoring in different industries: Targets are existing and new customersespecially for SKF Microlog but also other data collectors where non-contact measurementsbring benefits. The aim is to get a share of at least 5% of customers using a SKF Micrologwho will also use the SKF Laser Vibrometer. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is a complementaryvibration sensor for high-end measurements and monitoring. It adds functionality to serviceand maintenance engineers in the classical condition monitoring industries such as Pulp andPaper, Mining, Metals industry or Oil and Gas. It enables service engineers to takemeasurements on positions which are difficult or impossible to reach, on rotating parts andhot surfaces, even measurements through glass or windows are possible thus it can be usedin harsh environment or for areas which are not allowed to enter or applications where themeasurement object is difficult to reach.

Section 1 – Introduction SKF Laser VibrometerFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs), Page 3 of 5 Product Launch

    Technical

Q1. How does the SKF Laser Vibrometer work?

A1. If a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency of the light is shiftedproportional to its velocity, a phenomenon referred to as the Doppler Shift. Through thisprocess, the velocity information becomes coded in the frequency of the light and issubsequently used by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry to measure the vibration. A precisioninterferometer and digital decoding electronics transform the frequency shift into avoltage signal that can be processed by standard data acquisition systems. A significantproperty of this technology is that the velocity information is independent of the intensityof the reflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle works well for objects withlow reflectivity surfaces.

Q2. How can the SKF Laser Vibrometer be calibrated?

A2. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is easy to calibrate. It is recommended to use the calibrationexciter MSL-C 7000. Instructions are contained within the user manual.

Q3. Do I need further accessories to perform measurements in the field?

A3. A good-quality and stable tripod onto which the SKF Laser Vibrometer can be mounted isrequired.

Q4. What is the limit of distance, I can use the SKF Laser Vibrometer?

A4. The sensor has a variable focus lens and it works between 90 mm and 3 meters. The usefor longer distances depends on the reflection quality of the measuring object. In specialcases it is possible to apply reflection pads, this should be discussed with CMC Steyrdirectly.

Q5. What is the frequency range of the SKF Laser Vibrometer?

A5. The frequency range of the analog output is 0.5 Hz to 22 kHz and for the digital output itis 0 to 22 kHz. The SKF Laser Vibrometer is especially suitable for measuring low-speedor slow moving applications.

Introduction to Laser-Doppler vibrometryIf a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency of the

light is shifted proportional to its velocity, a phenomenon referred toas the Doppler Shift. Through this process, the velocity informationbecomes coded in the frequency of the light and is subsequentlyused by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry to measure the vibration. Aprecision interferometer and digital decoding electronics transformthe frequency shift into a voltage signal that can be processed bystandard data acquisition systems. A significant property of this tech-nology is that the velocity information is independent of the intensityof the reflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle workswell for objects with low reflectivity surfaces.

The FPM software is an advanced vibration analysis soft-ware for detailed root cause analysis (RCA) of bearing vibrations.

    Calibration

For high-accurate measurements, it is recommended to calibrate theSKF Laser Vibrometer and the SKF Microlog with SKF’s calibrationexciter MSL-C 7000. The exciter creates a fixed frequency of159,2 Hz and 10 mm/s (RMS) amplitude.

SKF Laser Vibrometer offers non-contact vibrationmeasurement

The non-contact vibration sensor offers new monitoring options to engineersin a wide range of applications, such as fans, electric motors, pumps andhousehold appliances.

Gothenburg, 2 December 2013: SKF has launched the SKF Laser Vibrometer MSL-7000,a digital, integrated, single-box vibrometer that has been developed specifically for non-contact vibration measurements. The MSL-7000 offers service engineers an advanced, flexible and robust tool for collecting vibration measurements in a large number ofdifferent field applications.

The development of the MSL-7000 meets the need of an increasing number ofcustomers who wish to conduct end-of-line noise testing for their products, especiallyfor “noise critical” applications such as fans, electric motors, pumps and householdappliances. The design is easy to integrate into test set-ups and existing controlsystems and covers acoustic measurements from 0.2 Hz (for slow rotations) up to 22kHz. The MSL-7000 can also be used for mobile condition monitoring, together with theSKF Microlog series, where it enables non-contact measurements that could not be

taken before, such as measurements on hot surfaces and through glass.

“The SKF Laser Vibrometer can help customers who need advanced and flexiblevibration measurement, regardless whether they are doing retro-fitted qualityinspection or if they are doing vibration measurement in difficult locations”, says WernerPalmetshofer, General Manager Condition Monitoring Centre in Steyr, Austria.

The robust and compact, single-unit meter design offers both easy installation andoperation and because it employs non-contact measurement the MSL-7000 issignificantly less subject to wear, making it an efficient and cost-effective tool.

The MSL-7000 was developed to be used on its own for end-of-line inspection ortogether with SKF condition monitoring products, such as the SKF Microlog family of

portable vibration monitoring and data collection instruments, thus offering additionalvalue to all customers. In addition, a package, MSL 7000C, for laptop use with the SKFFPM Software and a mobile data acquisition card is available.

    Principle of Doppler vibrometry

If a light beam is reflected by a moving object, the frequency ofthe light is shifted proportional to its velocity, a phenomenonreferred to as the Doppler Shift. Through this process, thevelocity information becomes coded in the frequency of the lightand is subsequently used by the Laser-Doppler vibrometry tomeasure the vibration. A precision interferometer and digitaldecoding electronics transform the frequency shift into a voltagesignal that can be processed by standard data acquisitionsystems. A significant property of this technology is that thevelocity information is independent of the intensity of thereflected light; hence, this robust measuring principle works wellfor objects with low reflectivity surfaces.
