and of conquests, unfet-tered creativeness, sun, sea, lightness and experi-mentation – the ideal

venue for digital and analogical con-nections.This is a city that offers opportunity - a space in which to cultivate dreams and nurture them every day, where you can seek and find the most var-ied forms of inspiration to make you grow.A place of arrival and departure.  Following the success of similar proj-ects in Paris and New York, C’N’C Costume National is now looking for its plug generation among the young people in Barcelona who fre-quent myspace -  a quest for young techies and energetic, curious cre-atives always on-line.The result is the brand’s new adver-tising campaign launched at Stefan Ruiz’s Lesseps home with all the taste and colour that only a city like BAR-CELONA can offer.  And that’s not all.

ur starting point was the people involved in the campaign – we went to find out more about these

connected creatives. They talked to us about themselves, their dreams and creative projects. They took us to their favourite plac-es – clubs, art galleries, lesser known markets and alleys. They introduced us to their connections, their friends. We met a designer who introduced us to a DJ who connected us with an il-lustrator, the friend of a motion pic-ture graphic artist who shares a studio with an art curator. We were to start mapping out our very own network, our special Barcelona.  Come with us – we guarantee a quite different kind of tour!

n the set we meet  Lucùos, a fashion de-signer of New York ori-gins who is in Barcelona

for a change of air and to see how things move around here.“I’m a really cool crazy guy, full of energy, love and happiness.” He in-troduces himself with these words, a twenty-five year old who loves a good party. Hard to say he’s wrong! In New York along with two others, he’s responsible for a clotheswear line. Here in Barcelona he’s look-ing for new experiences, connec-tions and friends.Such as this: two days of full-im-mersion to provide a testimonial of the CNC campaiagn and all because he picked up on the con-tacts mentioned on the brand’s myspace page.  “I’m on internet the whole time to keep in contact with my friends in New York and the world, exchanging photographs, swapping ideas and inspiration, discovering new artists.

This is the way to find things to-day, the only one with any sense! So how do I present myself on my myspace page? Very nicely, I hope! I want for visitors to under-stand right off I’m an artist.Facebook? Just for my friends – and only the most deserving get access.” During a break in the photo-shoot Lucùos shows us an interesting  fanzine called noname. It’s a maga-zine about research and inspiration containing a colour board of ideas. “A friend of mine Fran-cesco works there, would you like to meet him?”

Internet is the way to find things today, the only one that makes sense!

o we immediately contact Frances-co Fumarola and arrange to meet at Iguapop, the gallery and store that exhibits young art halfway between

Japanese-inspired toys and American art. Fresh, new names - some of which are cer-tainly on their way to fame.  Francesco’s Italian and has lived in Barce-lona for the last two and a half years. He came here on a Leonardo grant and at the moment feels it is the right place to stay and try and find his way forward. A freelance journalist, he loves researching and trying out new things. Noname Magazine is the

name of

his newspaper. He mentions Barcelona’s key venues: SO-NAR, PRIMAVERA SOUND and OFFF – they all provide a line-up of great music and visual experience – in places for meet-ing and getting to know people. My profession is not exactly easy, he says. To start with you need to be quite cheeky and bold as not all doors will open au-tomatically - you’ve got to get out there and create your own network of contacts through friends and friends of friends.Barcelona has a stimulating effect on con-nections – there’s so much energy in the air even though maybe there are just too

many people. There are time-wasters of course but you’ll meet people who know how to create projects, new ideas, schemes and business ventures.  Of course I use the Internet as a research tool. I start with images; I seek out con-nections and follow links. I download a lot of stuff in low-res which I then work and rework. If I find something I like and can use, I buy it.On my myspace page I talk about the things that interest me, my discoveries – artists and music, loads of music. I just couldn’t live without it.

The Net completes information and provides ideas, an important thing for creativeness: yet I still have to be able to touch, see and experience things first-hand. Direct experience and the emotional im-pact of things are better! There’s a need for real life!

Ò

But the Net’s just a stimulant. I much prefer the analogical to the digital world, things that make an impression on me in the street or on a piece of paper.  The web completes information and can give you ideas, it’s important for creativity; but then again I must be able to touch and see and experience things directly.  Di-rect experience and the emotion of things are far better. It helps real life!I think Barcelona has the right bal-ance behind the analogical and the digital – no lack of great schemes and ideas, lots of summer festivals you just have to attend.

I make music when I have time. I play the “tammorra” - a large framed drum with small bells that comes from the Salentino area of Italy. I love that instrument also because it reminds me of my origins.I’ve played it here in Barcelona too – and it felt like coming home!

e move out of Iguapop be-cause Francesco is taking us to RAS where we meet Mamen, Agente Morillas.

She’s a strange-looking girl with a blend of dark traits. A most interesting and enigmatic mix.She comes from Andaluzia and has been living in Barcelona for seven years in pur-suit of her dream to work as an illustrator. The city isn’t easy, she says. There’s tre-mendous competition – too many people willing to work for free.  At times it seems to be such a utopian place even if I have to fight for my dream every day. I love Barcelona, the weather is lovely, it’s a re-ally liveable place – neither too large nor too small and if you’re outgoing you can soon build up an enormous network of contacts. I met Francesco two years back through another artist.  Tales of connections as we were saying…  I love doing illustrations and know I will always do them. I like working in a range of fields from the world of fashion

to magazines and journals.  I’ll only do a project if I like it. That’s why I also work as a bar-tender at the Apolo Club,  one place you can’t afford to miss when you’re in Barcelona. Here I have complete free-dom to meet and get to know the artists I like the most. I adore music – the kind that has an intense feel like hard-core and electronic. It helps me when I’m working at home in total peace.  I say this even though at times I’d like to have the cour-age to share a street-art session with some friends.I may look calm but there’s a fire burn-ing inside me. My personality is an alter ego in constant change. I’m the one who hides behind a mask when I’m scared, when I fall in love. Most of my time can only be described as dark with masks like the one from “The Silence of the Lambs” or wielding clubs and machetes. I seem pretty and innocuous but really...

Of course I use myspace, but mostly for work and contacts. I have a total of 2700 friends made up of artists and curious people. I have one rule however: I forbid my friends to publish my photographs and if they do I cancel them immedi-ately. My page is there to talk about my creations not my private life.  I’m highly reserved. That’s why I recently deleted my facebook profile – it’s just a place for gos-sip, nothing more.

A really super location has been chosen for

the campaign! In perfect Catalan style, eclectic, made up of light, shapes, large rooms with deco-rations, ceramics, co-lours, mosaics.

Everyone’s hard at work: the hair stylist, makeup artist, Stefan Ruiz and his team. The energy level is in top gear and the campaign too!

Federica Di Matteo

ur next stop is  La Paradeta, the mecca for fresh fish.  It’s a fine evening and all around us is Barcelona’s varied

and involving energy. It feels just right.Seated around our table are a journalist, an art director, a designer, a video-maker, an art curator and a creative.Life-sharing. Here the best ideas don’t get born in an office – they take shape here in the street, at a party or around a table groaning with first-rate fresh fish. In Bar-celona things get created like this – being close and together, hanging out and ex-changing opinions, connecting with other people’s worlds to share thoughts and vi-sions.  We are introduced to  Federica Di Mat-teo, the art curator for a hotel chain. She’s an outgoing, happy-looking girl who has carved herself out a niche in all this.We make a date to meet up again the following morning to drink some fresh juice at the La Boqueria Mar-ket, a magical and popular venue, an absolute must to have a fresh juice and come back later on for the sale of fresh fish in the evening.

We arrange to meet at  11 the next morn-ing for brunch consisting of Papito sand-wiches and beer, typical fare around here! She’s been in Barcelona for the last five years having escaped from Milan like many others.  She tells us about her proj-ect – to organize art exhibitions in a hotel chain, it’s quite a new segment to be devel-oped.  Federica tells us that a hotel doesn’t provide a structured platform in the same way as an art gallery but that it’s a grow-ing sector. It undeniably represents a big opportunity for an artist to exhibit his or her creations and maybe their first solo show.  And this chance isn’t just being of-fered to young artists but to everyone with the desire to exhibit. She says, I love work-ing with w o m e n w h o dedicate time to their art. T h o s e are the p e o p l e w h o give you b a c k t h e m o s t

and show the most gratitude. She says that at the moment hotels  pro-vide little more than an ephemeral artistic space but she’s convinced that before not too long things will become a lot more or-ganized. Federica Di Matteo got the idea in New York where so many events and happenings take place in the halls and lobbies of hotels.  I’m always connected and online at work and at home. You save so much time and bureaucratic procedures can be completed faster.I also have different profiles – all colour-ful and euphoric.  Shock and chic at the same time that certainly reflect my char-acter. One’s called Lady Bazar and has been with me for some years now.  Here I talk about everything and publish things and personalities I like.  It’s quite a chaotic world – just like a market, in fact. The other profile is MelaF, more recent, in which I restrict myself to artists and art-gallery people by feeding my circuit of connections.Facebook? I love it!  I love the intrusive part where you can stick your nose into other people’s business. I’m quite happy when people stick their own noses into mine!On average I spend an hour a day an-swering and writing messages but if I have time even more.

Ò

‘m interested in media-related

images – they’re a starting-point

for me.  It’s rather like the “Net”

where everyone goes fishing and

captures signals here and there, mixes

them with others, gives them a logical

meaning, their own and then casts them

out again in a kind of mass sharing.

Reinterpreting and redistributing

throughout diverse channels and circuits.

It’s a though the world of the Net of-

ten seems to double back

on its own

works starting from the pixelated images

downloaded from the internet that are

recomposed like mosaics: through his

works he hands dignity  back to lowly

defined images of seeming insignificance.

Through my images I try to put beauty

into the part of life that isn’t so attrac-

tive and here I don’t mean reporting

bad things or political inspiration. Our

generation isn’t into that.

Most of all I see a disenchanted world

where I try and beautify reality yet with a

disillusioned vision that both dreamy and

magical.

Naturally internet helps feed  my ideas

and meet other artists. I have my own

site, a myspace page and a facebook

profile but I use them mainly for

work. I’m really quite shy. I call my

friends on the phone and I use skype.

In his most recent creations Xavi’s works

are no larger than 50 cm by 50 cm. Often

it’s space that conditions your works.  My

studio is in my home and it’s not very

big.

What’s more in recent years the cost of

property in Barcelona has rocketed and

it’s not easy to find space at cheap prices.

However if you’re an artist you have to go

to Poblenou – where you’ll find ex-facto-

ries converted into open spaces for artists.

You should really go and see one like the

Hangar, a space that now houses a studio,

art gallery and events.

oung people into digi-tal technology, curious about everything and always online. This

sums up the key features of what we define “The Plug Generation” which C’N’C is keen to photo-graph.

Digital natives who have grown up with the web, a virtual “world” that’s increasingly real in which internet is there for feeding ideas, catalyzing creativeness and new projects, travel and most impor-tant developing one’s own network of friends and acquaintances.

Equipped with a virtual-ego among second life, myspace and facebook the Plug Generation builds its own

path with passion and interest on the lookout for experimental and highly personal routes and meth-ods. Totally focused on the pres-ent, the Plug Generation is hard to pin down and classify – it eludes generalized labels.

Plug Generation people focus on a creativeness that stands at the heart of their way forward. They favour indie-rock and new sounds, codes and styles, seeking unusual paths obsessed with what’s on now; they are people who rapidly re-process all they see. This cultural move-ment has no stylistic confines. The eyes, ears and minds of Plug Gen-eration people work 360°. “I am fascinated by the global nature of street culture and its multi-cultural

identities,” Ennio Capasa remarks. “The web is the ideal space to watch how the Plug Generation is moving, to look for new ideas, dif-ferent trends and ideas. I get a real kick each season out of comparing different cities and this helps me build up an international map of styles, personalities and anecdotes on the Plug Generation. To share with you”.

TvBoyTvBoyo need to say it more than once: our next stop is hangar, the one-time factory in the suburbs that’s now active as an atelier for Bar-

celona creatives. This is where we meet TVBOY, an artist of Italian origins who has found both his space and the right time to spring forth from the shadows. His works are now on display in galleries throughout Italy as well as in Spain, Switzerland, Den-mark and even Lebanon. Things started mov-ing for him at a street artists’ exhibition at Milan’s Pac and haven’t stopped – indeed he continues to produce exhibition after exhibi-tions, collaborative projects with brands and recently designed his own line of commercial products.I really have to thank the internet for all these encounters. It’s great to have a site and be able to update it with your latest creations. It’s an ideal way to get yourself known throughout the world even though at the same time it can be dangerous as people can easily copy your projects.

TVBOY’s art is born in the street because that’s where, he maintains, the message is at its most authentic.TVBOY started his career in 2003 as a hi-tech personality and in a way he’s represen-tative of all of us who live in a continually connected way – like having a monitor or computer that contains our head. I find it easy to display my street creations in galleries because that’s how the market’s mov-ing. You certainly don’t reason like a graphic designer. Not enough money and loads of modifications to make the whole time.I work such a lot on connections and swap-ping and comparing ideas and not just those I find on the internet. I also teach at a univer-sity here in  Barcelona and have found that teaching gives me a great deal. I learn a lot from my students - more than what I teach them. He’s also into deeper, more cultural connec-tions.

recently went on a trip to Cuba simi-lar to yours here. Five writers and a curator seeking contacts and experi-ences. We got in with the local artists

and found walls to paint. It was a really in-teresting experience because we were able to match ourselves against the local graffiti culture.

In Cuba I rediscovered the joy of being to-gether with people, doing mural art and sharing real emotions and feelings.  I really believe the power of many murales works wouldn’t be as strong if they were on can-vas.  Just look at Bansky, he’s a genius!

He’s really good at communicating a pro-vocative, direct message on a building’s wall in a stylish way using his unique lan-guage. He can be funny and hard-hitting at the same time.

I fell in love with Barcelona straightaway. I first came here just after graduating and got painting everywhere.

I was thunderstruck and also decided to come here because I fell in love. And it’s still great! I really like the energy and people I meet though I can also see their faults. It’s too expensive and they’re tak-

ing down spaces like these for creatives, to make way for cathedrals in the desert. But I like it and can’t imagine going back to Italy.

Here it’s easy to meet so many artists and real professionals intent on finding success in their work. One example is Alex – he’s an excellent graphic designer and recently signed a deal with of all people, the Roll-ing Stones! Let me introduce him to you.

Working in the same space helps you share the atmosphere even

though each of us has his own cus-tomers. The great thing about being

freelance is that you can express yourself and broaden your ideas, says Michelan-

gelo. However you can often feel lonely and unable to grow. Bringing together and

experiencing different realities under the same roof make it possible to create different dynamics, share the atmosphere, ideas and

music. They both chose Barcelona for its life-

Working in the same space helps you share the atmosphere even

though each of us has his own cus-tomers. The great thing about being

freelance is that you can express yourself and broaden your ideas, says Michelan-

personally have an agent in London, an-other in Madrid and one in New York. This

allows me to concentrate on my creations and not waste time attending meetings and travelling around.Yes of course the internet’s important and it also helps you dialogue with people, see them and have a good chat – and sometimes change the subject. Just like music for example which is a great help in all this.  Here in our studio we’re both keen on electronic music but every so often we also listen to classical music to keep the DVAIN happy – they’re the motion graph-ics trio who also share the studio with us.

With us music is always pres-ent – it helps us relax and also helps you focus

your attention in a way that’s

both continuous and light, Michelangelo continues. We are constantly bombarded by messages from facebook, email, and myspace. Every-thing seems to be driving you to distract you from your work. Music can help you find harmony and relax

However they’re not great fans of the facebook phe-nomenon. As Alex says at the start it was a nice space where you could share your projects with a few friends but now it’s become practically incontrol-lable and ubiquitous – these days everyone’s got their own facebook profile with loads of friends who don’t know each other.

And the result? 10% profit and lost of wasted time, lots of useless mails that you don’t really want to receive, so many people who not having

seen you for years, are keen to make contact once

more with any ap-parent interest.

o all in all I think I might bow out from facebook quite soon. I don’t like this constant

Big Brother Eye Morale which seems to be checking you, watching and scrutinising you.Email and the phone are better.

ime to get back to the studio, a bright, luminous apartment in the Poblenou district.

Here we make the acquaintance of Carlos and Teo, two members of DVAIN, and the mo-tion graphic groups currently enjoying new-found success.

The third member of the trio Fernando works out of Italy – obviously making abundant use of internet, skype, email and chat.

Many of the young people we meet through our connections talk to us about their work: videos inspired by science fiction, prehistoric monsters, alien creatures from outer space, surprising and unexpected viewpoints.

We love experimenting different materials and media - from filming food as it’s cooking – to holograms used for events and catwalks to 3D animations.

They have customers all over the world. Many agencies still need real contact with people; however whether we’re working over the in-ternet or we meet up with people eye to eye - it’s all the same to us.

They find inspiration in the simplest of things such as observing small and hidden things in nature or even in a bar while we’re having a snack thunderstruck by a detail that spawns a new idea.

We use Internet to uncover and discover other realities, other creatives, read blogs. If some-one likes us we work hard to come up with collaborative projects, specially with DJs. There’s no doubt that music is one of the ba-sics behind a video’s success.

Next stop - Vallery, a gallery

and store all in one and

there we meet Berto Mar-

tinez. This is the first time

he is exhibiting his works – a series of

water-colours of portraits, lifestyles, art,

cinema, fashion, interior design and

politics. A wide range of topics Berto’s

a freelance who works for several news-

papers and magazines but that doesn’t

mean his work in any way lack fresh-

ness, determination and above all the

spontaneous nature of his ideas. He

is constantly on the look-out for new

back-ups, themes and different media

and always succeeds in putting across

his very personal viewpoint. He is good

at achieving a vision that mixes in well

with the theme chosen by those com-

missioning him.

His compositions are light and fresh

and abound with an amazing pictorial

ability. Lots of portraits with personali-

ties and icons from music and art – faces

that have inspired revolution – reflec-

tive, personal and professional – stars of

the screen and television.

And of course I use the internet, blogs and face-book to look for inspira-

idden behind Vallery you can find one of Bar-celona’s largest

designs studios: Vasava.

Its store is its most attrac-tive feature – here they sell objects connected to design but it’s also a place where excellent competent emerging artists such as Berto can propose them-selves.

We’re not so interested in the commercial part but rather in the many

examples of creativeness and innovation, says Enric Godes, one of the people running the studio. We’re the ones who invest new ideas, new approaches and visions in what goes on here. Every so often we also publish books with design-ers from around the world just to keep connected and be able to work outside the usual business param-eters imposed by custom-ers. They help us broaden our contacts and obviously help us find provide further inspiration.

ow often do you get the chance to have a deep, re-laxing conversation with a nineteen-year old who’s

passionate about history? We meet Oriol on our return to the Lesseps House. Like Loucious he’s one of the lead players in the CNC campaign here.

Shaggy-haired with a large fringe cov-ering most of his face, Oriol’s quick intelligence, lively spirit and enthu-siasm are plain to see after just a few exchanges.

He’s already used to sets, photo-graphs and while waiting for a shoot he talks to us about seven short films he’s made. Certainly acting is one of his favourite things but it has little to do with the pleasure and curiosity he finds in studying the past. He says his-tory helps you understand today and can prepare you for the future with plans, programmes and strategies all based on learning from past mistakes committed over the centuries.

Primarily history is emotion, art, eco-nomics, public and private life. And everything relates to everything else - to individuals and peoples, he tells us.

I know I’m living in my own epoch and understand that studying helps you appreciate what you are living through. I don’t see myself as a ro-mantic or a nostalgic. I’m 19 and love the things most people my age love – going out, dancing, and listening to music. I adore Japanese manga, car-toons in general and 1950s cinema.

nd I adore Barcelona – it’s my city, eternal, beautiful and infinite, a place that holds surpris-

es around every corner. Barcelona’s culturally rich, it’s the heart of the Mediterranean, open, cheerful and sunny – and the people are so di-verse and multicultural.

I admit fashion intrigues me even though I certainly don’t think I’m a slave to styles and the latest trends – they’re just part of how I am now.

My take on the Internet and the Web? No doubt it’s an amazing thing to be able to find out and dis-cover things immediately – it’s really important for our cultural outlook. I’m thinking of signing up for a pro-file on Facebook – everyone seems to be on it!
