Head Coach Tyler Wingard

HEAD TRACK & FIELD COACH

Since arriving at CNU prior to the 2006-07 season, Tyler Wingard has maintained Christopher New-port’s lofty position as one of the top programs both in the region and around the country.

During his time with the Captains, Wingard’s stu-dent-athletes have set 28 new school records and inserted themselves into the program’s top-10 lists on a multitude of occasions. Two Captains also claimed national titles during his tenure after Ra-chael Clark took home the indoor shot put crown in 2007 before Richard Roethel won the indoor hep-tathlon in 2012. Additionally, his track & field squads have captured 17 Mason-Dixon championships.

For his efforts, Wingard has been named the men’s indoor and outdoor Regional Coach of the Year dur-ing his time in Newport News.

Prior to arriving at Christopher Newport University, Wingard served a six year tenure at Valparaiso Uni-versity in Indiana. Competing in the NCAA Division I Mid Continent Conference, Wingard’s athletes earned 14 individual conference titles and two relay titles among 87 All-Conference honors. He coached one Conference Athlete of the Year, three Newcom-ers of the Year, seven NCAA Regional Qualifiers, and one USATF Junior National Qualifier. The team set 44 School Records and posted 241 All-Time marks and excelled in the classroom, too, as team members were named to the CoSIDA Regional All-Academic Team three times and earned 151 Aca-demic All-Conference honors.

Coach Wingard started his collegiate coaching career at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. During his three years there he served as the Recruiting Coordinator and coached the jav-elin, pole vault, shot put, and worked with the de-cathletes and heptathletes. During that time, Wing-

ard’s athletes earned two All-America honors in the javelin and eight in the multi events, sev-enteen entries to the National Championships, and twenty-six All-Conference honors.

Wingard brings with him a focus on the techni-cal aspects of Track & Field events and train-ing. He is a USATF Level 2 Coach in all event areas and a Level 2 Biomechanics Instructor. He is also a Level 1 Instructor and a member of the USATF Coaching Education Executive Committee. Wingard’s program emphasizes technical, physical, and psychological devel-opment, taking advantage of the full career and resources of each athlete. Each season has a specific focus determined by the indi-vidual’s skill level and experience --the end goal being the greatest possible performance gains during the athlete’s tenure at Christo-pher Newport University.

Wingard competed at the collegiate level for Occidental College in Los Angeles. Originally a long and triple jumper, he added the javelin through his training as a decathlete. The ad-dition proved fruitful as he twice qualified for the National Championships in his new event. Wingard continued to compete in the javelin while a graduate student in mathematics at SUNY-Stony Brook, medalling twice at the Empire State Games. He continued compet-ing for seven more years before retiring from active competition in 2000.

Outside of coaching and competing, Wingard taught mathematics and physics at the high school and at the community college level.

Head Coach Matthew Barreau

HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH

In his second year as CNU’s head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach, Matthew Bar-reau has already made an immediate impact on the program. During his first season at the helm of the cross country team, he led the Captains to both the men’s and women’s USA South titles. Prior to arriving in Newport News, Barreau most re-cently served as an assistant coach at two Division I schools, Bethune-Cookman in Florida during the 2009-10 season and Portland State from 2005 to 2008. His resume also included stints as an assis-tant coach at Concordia in Oregon (2008-09), Adams State (2004-05), Western Oregon (2003-04), and at several high schools. In all, he has spent seven years in collegiate coach-ing and last year also served as an editor of a website dedicated to running, RunnerSpace.com, traveling extensively to cover meets across the country includ-ing the Penn Relays, the USATF Indoor Champion-ships, and the USA Club Outdoor Championships. “My high school coach made such an impact on my life that I decided at the age of 15 I wanted to dedicate my life to coaching,” Barreau said. “I am so excited to be at Christopher Newport and look forward to this tremendous opportunity.”

Barreau, a native of Springfield, Oregon, is a 2004 cum laude graduate of Western Oregon University.

ASSISTANT COACHES

MICHAEL HANKSASSISTANT COACH, JUMPS, 6TH YEARFormer Appalachian State standout Mike Hanks is in his sixth year on the CNU coaching staff. He has consistently elevated CNU jumpers to the National level. In 2009, he helped Isaac Bell to a runner-up finish at the Indoor Na-tional Championships in the Triple Jump and third Out-doors where he scared the 50’ barrier (49-11.75). During the season, the jumps corps posted dozens of PRs, many adding feet to their previous bests. Hanks was selected as the 2010 South/Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year with five athletes meeting provisional standards in seven events.

Hanks earned All-America recognition five times in the triple jump, was the Southern Conference Athlete of the

Year three times and holds the School and Conference Records in the Indoor and Outdoor Long Jump, the Indoor Triple Jump, and holds the Conference Record in the Outdoor Triple Jump. In 1988 he participated in the Olympic Trials and jumped in the World University Games qualifier.

He began his coaching career at his alma mater where he assisted with the jumps for three years and mentored five Conference Champions and seven All-Conference ath-letes. He later spent three years at Clemson, continuing his coaching success with six ACC Champions and six All-ACC athletes. Prior to joining the CNU staff, he coached at nearby Tabb H.S. He’s a native of Henderson, N.C.

ALEX HEACOCKASSISTANT COACH, THROWS, 1ST YEAR

A 2009 graduate of William & Mary and a collegiate throwing coach during the past three years, Alex Hea-cock brings a great deal of experience and expertise to the CNU track & field team.

A USATF Level I certified coach, Heacock kicked off his professional career as the throws coach at North Park University in Chicago during the 2009-10 season. Over the next two campaigns, he served in the same role at Benedictine University from 2010-12.

Over the past three years, Heacock has helped his stu-dent-athletes achieve record-setting performances and

national honors. He has coached one All-American, five NCAA provisional qualifiers, and six conference record-holders. Additionally, his athletes have captured eight in-dividual league championships and earned three “Field Athlete of the Meet” awards during those title competitions.

During his collegiate career, Heacock was a three-time All-CAA selection at William & Mary and took home the 2007 conference javelin title. A three-time IC4A qualifier, he served as SAAC Vice President before earning a degree in Kinesiology.

LOUIS JOHNSONCOACH EMERITUS

Coach Louis Johnson has dedicated over a quarter cen-tury to the CNU Track & Field Program. He helped guide the Captains to all 12 National Championships and over 450 All-America Honors, including over 50 Individual and Relay Titles. Few coaches can claim such a record of success. A small measure of the lasting effect he had on the liv

Johnson, who served as Interim Head Coach for the 2005-06 season after the retirement of former head coach Vince Brown, has been assisting the track team since 1987 when he joined Brown as a volunteer assis-tant.

Since that time he has coached 15 national champions in the sprints and 400-meter re-lay. In 1990 he had the distinction of becoming the first sprint coach to have his athletes win 55 meter titles for both men and women at the same NCAA championships. Sheila Trice won in 7.07 and Ed Milling in 6.42.

Johnson began his track career in the 1960s, but although his career was cut short by injuries he remained in competition in later years in the U.S. Air Force and as a member of the Newport News, Va., Police Force, representing the department in several Law Enforcement Olympics. He also represented the United States at the PanAm Masters Games in Toronto, winning silver medals in the 110 hurdles and 100 meters and a gold medal in the 400 meter relay.

He also took the same medals in the same events in the International Law Enforcement Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Johnson started his coaching career in 1985 at Menchville H.S. in Newport News work-ing with highlyacclaimed coaches Charlie Nuttycombe and Doug Dickinson.

During his 23 years at CNU he has worked with over 300 All-Americans and has coached 34 400-meter relay teams and 80 male and female athletes. He is a member of the United States Track Coaches Association, the NCAA Track Coaches Association, USA Track and Field and is the Commissioner of the Mason-Dixon Conference, the oldest track conference in the country.

Johnson is a USA Track & Field Level II Certified coach in the sprints, hurdles, relays and jumps and is a Level I Instructor. He has completed a study on the different phases of the sprint start and designed a program specifically to break down a sprint race in cycles, from the reaction time to the last stride of the race. Using this information he was able to lower two of his female sprinters times from 12.48 to 11.95 before the finals of the 2002 NCAA Championships.

He is a father of two, and a grandfather of four.

During her career at CNU, Hansen had incredible range as an athlete – a near-national qualifier in the High Jump as a freshman and making the provisional list in the Triple Jump; she was also an All-Region finisher in Cross Country. She made a whimsical request to try the 400m Hurdles after the outdoor Conference Championships her freshman year. In her first race, she fell over the 4th hurdle, but still got up to finish in 1:11. Two days later, she ran 1:04.98 – just shy of the Provisional Qualifying Standard for Nationals. A foot injury delayed the start of her chase her sophomore year, but she raced to a 1:03.47 PR to rank #29 in Div. III and #6 All-Time for CNU. Hansen was also selected as a USATFCCCA All-Academic in both cross country and track and field.

Indoor All-Time Lists

Kicking off her career in fine fashion, Fredsal Walker excelled in the hurdles throughout her freshman campaign. During the indoor season, she posted a second-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships after recording a time of 9.39. Just as successful during the outdoor season, she was also the runner-up at the Mason-Dixon meet in the 100-hurdles after clocking in at 15.66. Rounding out her year, she also placed second at the league meet in the indoor 4x100 relay and third in the outdoor 200.

CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK & FIELD 2012-1332

USA SOUTH (CROSS COUNTRY)

THE HISTORY OF THE USA SOUTH The Dixie Conference, now known as the USA South Athletic Conference, was formed in 1963 when six schools with similar philosophies of academ-ics and athletics joined as the founding members. These colleges were: Charlotte College (presently UNC Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College, Lynchburg College, North Carolina Wesleyan College and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The basis of the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, thus no athletically related financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. This philosophy still exists today.

The conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA formed the Division III concept, which allowed membership only for non-athletic scholarship schools. The Dixie Conference joined this new ar-rangement, and in so doing, it became one of the first conferences to be accepted in Division III. From the beginning of the Division, the Dixie/USA South Conference has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding reputation, regionally and nationally.

The conference sponsored only athletic programs for men students until 1983. The NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s programs on the Division III level in that year, and the Dixie Conference followed that lead by also including women’s sports. Many of the members’ teams have gained excellent recognition in these sports.

Each year the conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic achievements are also emphasized. Those student athletes who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better are named to the All-Academic team. This group annually averages nearly 400 in number.

CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK & FIELD 332012-13

MASON-DIXON (TRACK & FIELD)

THE HISTORY OF THE MASON-DIXONAs the Mason-Dixon Conference celebrates its 71st running of the Out-door Track & Field Championships this spring, it takes pride in its long list of accomplishments. Providing opportunities for student-athletes to excel in competition, both athletically and academically, has always been its mission. Since Waldo Hamilton of Johns Hopkins University and Dorsey Griffith of Catholic University of America came up with the idea of forming a Track & Field only conference in 1936, the league has seen a steady flow of well deserving men and women compete amongst the nation’s best in Cross Country, Indoor Track & Field and Outdoor Track & Field. The conference was initially established with nine small colleges in the

Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia area, and at times has had as many as eighteen schools com-peting at once. The founding schools included Washington College, University of Delaware, Johns Hopkins University, Randolph-Macon College, Catholic University, Gallaudet University, Western Mary-land College, American University and Baltimore University. Of those schools, Catholic University and Gallaudet University still are strong and active supporters of the Mason-Dixon.

Today, the conference consists of NCAA Division III schools from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and North Carolina. All of these schools are affiliated with All-Sport Conferences, but the quality of competition, history and mystique have allowed the conference to continue into the 21st century. Today’s members include Catholic University of America, Christopher Newport University, Frostburg State University, Gallaudet University, The University of Mary Washington, Methodist Univer-sity, Salisbury University, Cabrini College, College Misercordia, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Penn State Behrend and Keystone College.
