News & Notes COASTAL CAROLINAS HEALTH ALLIANCE
CEO Update award with Dr. Kathryn Colacchio and the team at
Coastal Children’s Services.
As you can see, we’ve had a busy quarter with new c o n n e c t i o n s , o n g o i n g collaborations, and regional initiatives. CCHA project teams continue to share best practices and collect data around key performance indicators. The Illucient Purchasing Alliance team continues to review and negotiate new contracts (we c u r r e n t l y h a v e 1 6 0 + agreements available to
members).
Planning for our annual Alliance Day event is u n d e r w a y . A d d i t i o n a l
Coastal Connect Health Information Exchange is thrilled to announce that Onslow Memorial Hospital has joined
the exchange as a full member. This is a huge win for connected providers throughout the region, and we look forward to a fantastic partnership with Onslow Memorial as our teams begin
the connection process.
We’re also excited to announce that CCHA’s Mobile Simulation Program was recently honored for its work on the NEST neonatal training program with an Intalere Member Achievement Award. We’re honored to share this
i n f o r m a t i o n , i n c l u d i n g registration, will be shared with our members in the next couple of months. Already it’s looking like we’ll have a great agenda with some fantastic speakers who will be talking to the topics of Enthusiasm and Leadership. Members can mark their calendars for Alliance Day 2017, which will be held Friday, December 1st, at the Holiday Inn Resort on
Wrightsville Beach, NC.
The team and I are looking forward to a busy summer ahead. As always, we sincerely appreciate the support and dedication of our
member hospitals!
NEONATAL
TRAINING
PARTERNSHIP
RECEIVES
NAT’L AWARD
The Mobile Simulation Program
(MSP) recently acquired a new
patient simulator as well as
several task trainers. Here’s a
snapshot of how they’ll enhance
training for our members.
Senior HAL offers an array of physician
and physiological features, such as
airway and lung compliance, myocardial
infarction modeling, and drug recognition.
His abilities support both interdisciplinary
training and nurse practice on respirator
troubleshooting and maintenance.
The SMASH Arm task trainer supports
practice with arterial and venous skills like
medication infusion, phlebotomy, and
venipuncture.
Also, our new Perineal Suture task
trainer will let training participants practice
incision training, tissue retraction, and
tissue suture and repair.
Newly established in 2017,
CCHA’s Non-Acute Member tier
encompasses pre-acute as well
as pos t -acute prov iders
throughout the region. Since first
opening this new membership
category, we have added seven non-
acute organizations, and we have eight
potential members pending. Current
members include: Black River Health
Services, Cape Fear Clinic, The Davis
Community, Lower Cape Fear Hospice,
MedNorth, New Hope Clinic, and
Wilmington Health. Our goal is to have
twelve Non-Acute Members by the end of
this fiscal year.
With so many different types of healthcare
providers represented in this tier, it will be
important for us to identify their different
types of "spends," shared needs, and
areas where we can offer significant
savings. The CCHA team and I have
already made great strides in pinpointing
value opportunities for new members.
On the contract side, we anticipate that
early savings will be achieved through
o f f i ce and medica l supp l ies ,
pharmaceuticals, and furniture/equipment
purchases. In addition, members will also
have opportunities for sharing best
practices, collaboration, and sharing
expenses through participation in new or
existing project teams. For example, a
representative for Wilmington Health
joined the CCHA Physician Recruiters
team and took part in its shared
recruitment event initiative. This quickly
became a valuable source of cost
avoidance for Wilmington Health.
We continue to work with all new Non-
Acute Members to identify more
opportunities like this.

The third quarter of FY 2017 has
seen a continued trend of strong
contract utilization and savings
ROI for our member hospitals.
CCHA members can access the
Illucient Purchasing Alliance contract
portfol io, which currently has
approximately 160 agreements. The
Illucient team and I work hard to ensure
the portfolio has a variety of contracts in
several different categories, such as
laboratory, materials management, and
pharmacy. This ensures that we can meet
the diverse needs of our members.
Here’s a quick look at CCHA’s top ten
most utilized contracts:
1. Triose: Freight management services
2. American Red Cross: Blood supply
distribution and support services
3. Trion: Aggregated group disability
Our Physician Recruiters team has had a
busy year so far. During their monthly
meetings, they have continued to review
prospective group purchasing activities,
shared job vacancies and candidates to
support one another, and the expanded
Residents Reception event in Greenville,
NC, as well as a potential event in
Fayetteville.
This group has also participated in seven
shared recruitment events, which have
saved their hospitals a combined $21,000
in registration fees. Rather than each
indiv idual hospi ta l sending a
representative to a job fair event, one or
two from the team will attend and
represent the others as well. By doing so,
they cut back on costs and still get
representation. Well done, team!

New Equpiment Expands Training Capabilities
Through Coastal Connect HIE’s
federal eHealth connection, our
participants can view patient
information at Duke Health,
Mission Health, NHRMC
Physician Group/Specialist,
UNC Health Care, and Vidant Health.
Accessing this information involves a
short series of steps, which have been
outlined here.
As always, the CCHIE Help Desk is
available for anyone having trouble
accessing this information or in need of
additional guidance/troubleshooting.
The Help Desk can be reached either by
phone (1 -888-213-2147) or at

Memorial’s patients and their families
by supplying a complete medical history
to care providers. Having a patient’s
comprehensive health record in one
place and accessible by any provider
who is connected to the HIE eliminates
significant gaps and guesswork.
We are excited to begin this new
regional partnership with Onslow
Memorial Hospital. HIE integration work
will kick off in the coming weeks, and
the CCHIE team will share milestone
dates for CERT and PROD once they
have been established.
Onslow Memorial Hospital, a 162-

Jacksonville, NC, has joined
Coas ta l Connec t Hea l th
Information Exchange (CCHIE)
as a full member. Once
connected, the hospital will be able to
leverage the electronic “pipes” between
providers across a 71 county footprint in
both North and South Carolina,
underscoring the hospital’s commitment to
their motto “Where People Care.”
In addition to being able to access
information on the exchange, Onslow
Memorial Hospital will also become a data
contributor. Their patient information will
enhance the depth and richness of the
data that is available to all of our
connected providers and improve care
transition across our footprint.
CCHIE tools will empower Onslow
Memorial’s care managers and providers
by giving them access to patient records
at the point of care. With just a couple of
clicks, clinicians can quickly confirm test
results, emergency room admissions,
and other care encounters, thereby
increasing patient engagement at
appointments and eliminating delays
due to waiting on faxed test results from
another provider. A survey comment
from an HIE user in Wilmington spoke
to the benefit of having timely patient
information: “We can fax a request for
information to an office and wait weeks
for it to be processed or we can use
Coastal Connect to get the info the
same day the patient is in our office.
Win for the patient and the providers!”

CCHA’s Mobile Simulation
Program (MSP) partnered with
Coastal Children’s Services, a
pediatric subspecialty group
caring for children with complex
conditions, to offer a
unique training opportunity
called “NEST.” For its ongoing
work throughout the region,
the NEST program recently
received a 2017 Intalere
Member Achievement Award
for Quality / Patient Care
Delivery.
NEST (Neonatal Education
and Simulation Training) aims
to improve the health
outcomes of high -r isk
newborns through high-fidelity
simulation scenarios for
delivery room providers. Dr. Kathryn
Colacchio, neonatologist and medical
director for simulation for Coastal
Children’s Services, conducts the
NEST training alongside our MSP team
at many of our rural CCHA hospitals.
Scenarios mainly focus on how to
resuscitate and stabilize premature
babies.
