History lovers appreciate the lasting impact of a compelling museum

experience. Exhibits can bring the viewer face to face with the objects,

sights, sounds, and voices of another time.

As founder and president of Gallagher & Associates, Patrick Gallagher

has led the creation of some of the world’s most memorable museum

experiences, especially in the field of military history. His firm’s exhibits

have personalized and highlighted individuals, battles, and events to

create a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by those who

have fought for freedom. Gallagher’s portfolio includes the National

World War II Museum (New Orleans), the Gettysburg National Military

Park, the Visitor’s Center at the Normandy American Cemetery in

France, and exhibits for the Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy and Army.

Outside the military, recent installations have included the

International Spy Museum (D.C.), the College Football Hall of Fame in

Atlanta, the Jamestown Settlement Museum, and the LBJ Presidential

Library and Museum (Austin).

In today’s presentation, Mr. Gallagher will share some of the heroic

stories discovered during the research for his firm’s military projects.

He will also explain the interactive design techniques used to bring

these stories to life.

PRESIDENT’SREPORT:HILLARYSTRINGFELLOW

What a great time to be a part of Coastal Georgia HistoricalSociety as we celebrate the accomplishments of the past yearand the happenings of the year to come. On top of a regularcalendar of events, 2016 marked a full year for the Society. This annual report includes a comprehensive listing, and Iencourage you to take a minute to review this past year’simpressive list of activities.

The Chautauqua Lecture Series included five programs thisyear with record attendance. One of the best measures of thepopularity of our programs is growth in membership over thepast five years. Membership revenues have grown from$80,000 to over $280,000 during this period. The largestincrease has been in the Keeper of the Light category, whichhas grown from 58 to over 175 members! I am grateful to theDevelopment Committee, chaired by Brenda Jones, for thefabulous job that they have done engaging new people andencouraging our existing members to increase theirinvestment in our organization. And, my heartfelt thank you toour membership, the lifeblood of our organization, for yourongoing commitment and enthusiasm.

As 2016 draws to a close, the Board of Directors gives aspecial thank you to Anne Stembler, Nancy DeLong, andSusan Hartman who are completing their terms of service onthe Board. Anne served as President during the restoration ofthe Keeper’s Dwelling and was a generous supporter of theproject, she was a member of the Collections and EducationCommittee, and under her leadership, the Keeper of the Light

memberships increased dramatically. Susan has providedguidance to the Board as Governance Chair, and togetherwith her husband Jack, led the successful Keeper’s DwellingCampaign. Nancy has served faithfully as co-chair of theCollections and Education Committee and a member of theDevelopment Committee. She has generously given her time, talents, and resources without hesitation. We thank each ofthem for the countless hours, devoted leadership, and greatassistance to the mission, staff, and members of the Society.

Looking forward to a new year, the Board of Directors isenergized by the continued efforts of the staff who areleading the Society towards big goals and projects ofsignificant magnitude. In addition to a full calendar of eventsand programs, the staff has been working hard on the newWorld War II Home Front Museum at the Historic Coast GuardStation and are on track for a Spring 2018 opening. I wouldalso like to warmly welcome our new Board members JimDeLong, Sally Hawie, Casey Lavin, Reg Murphy, and BrendaThompson.

Thank you for your membership, your support of Societyfacilities and programs, and your dedication to our mission. It is exciting to think about all there is to come in 2017.Happy New Year!

EXECUTIVEDIRECTOR’SREPORT:SHERRI JONES

After celebrating the past 50 years of service to the communityin 2015, 2016 was a time of embracing the future. Much of thework this year took place behind the scenes in readyingimportant resources, such as a new website. Other projects, like the first Journeys series, were in response to membercomments and ideas from interested stakeholders. Throughoutthe year, we have asked ourselves how we can continue toserve our growing membership and engage new audiences. How can we be more involved in our community, especiallywith children and families? And, critically, how can we ensurethat the new World War II Home Front Museum is a financiallyviable and self-sustaining asset to the Society like thelighthouse site?

In response to requests from our membership, the Societyintroduced a new education series called Journeys. Thesignature series was comprised of an educational program incoordination with an expert-led field trip. The inauguralJourneys featured the American Bomber Boys of World War IIand combined a guided field trip to the National Museum ofthe Mighty 8th Air Force with a lecture by famed author andWorld War II historian Donald Miller. Dr. Miller discussed hisbest-selling book Masters of the Air and shared the personalstories of the young Americans who brought the war to Hitler’sdoorstep. The 2016 Journeys series was an excitingintroduction to a new educational opportunity for Societymembers and a chance to make good on our promise ofexpanding cultural programming for our members.

Even though the Society has been presenting theChautauqua Lecture Series for over 20 years, we continue toseek new ways to increase the impact of this rich educationalresource. For the first time, a Chautauqua speaker, Hank

Klibanoff, spoke to 225 students in U.S. History and AfricanAmerican Studies classes at Glynn Academy and BrunswickHigh. Mr. Klibanoff, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, presented programs about his work with the Georgia CivilRights Cold Case Project. Marie Feazel, the AdvancedPlacement History teacher at Glynn Academy, said thefollowing “I appreciate the efforts of the Coastal GeorgiaHistorical Society in bringing a dynamic speaker to enrich thelives of students. The determination of Mr. Hank Klibanoff tofocus his considerable talents and expertise on Civil Rightscold cases has inspired my students. Thank you for providingnew and engaging historical resources!”

Another first this year was engaging a world-famouscompany, Museum Hack, to modernize our approach to schooltours. Museum Hack is known for their renegade museumtours in New York City, Washington DC, and San Francisco. They arrive at a museum with fresh eyes and never stop askingthe question “how do we make this more interesting?”Museum Hack consultants worked with our education directorand docents to make our school tours fun and memorable byemploying non-traditional methods like sassy stories, juicygossip, games in the galleries, and fun photos. By the end ofthe workshop, docents had developed dynamic stories thatthey were passionate about telling to describe their favoriteartifacts and historical figures. The Society looks forward to ourcontinued collaboration with Museum Hack and adapting ourinterpretive style to educate and entertain our audiences.

Over the course of the year, the Society undertook a majorproject to build a new website that would create a strikingonline presence for a variety of users and showcase all aspectsof our dynamic organization. We wanted the overall design to

reinforce the Society’s well established “brand” and reflect thestandard of excellence that we adhere to as an AmericanAlliance of Museums accredited museum. A review of ourdomain name was completed as part of the project and a newdomain, www.coastalgeorgiahistory.org was adopted. Behindthe scenes, we needed a sophisticated tool for the future thatwould help drive traffic to our site by connecting to GoogleAnalytics, encourage interaction with our social mediaplatform, allow for ease in managing and updating for staff, and eliminate reliance on third party event booking.

The new website, launching early this year, is chock full ofstunning photography that introduces first-time visitors to thebeauty and history of our sites and reminds friends of ourtreasured assets. The new site is easy to navigate and providesmembers instant access to current Society programs andactivities. Many new features have been added including“Collection Highlights” by Buddy Sullivan to provide wideraccess to objects in the Society’s collection to teachers andresearchers. Visitors will easily locate information related toplanning a family day or a special event like a wedding orrehearsal dinner at our oceanside setting. The enhanceddesign will allow us to provide a quality experience for allvisitors, particularly as our audiences grow.

The most valuable groundwork for the future was laid in ourcollaboration with Gallagher & Associates to design theconcept for the new World War II Home Front Museum. At theNational World War II Museum in New Orleans, Gallagher hasset the standard for storytelling for the next generation tounderstand the impact of World War II on their lives. Theyhave a holistic approach to their projects and are as concernedwith educating and engaging the visitor as they are with

producing a financially viable museum. Presenting a worldclass museum experience to the community is a bold step forthe Society and we are grateful for Gallagher’s partnership toensure that the project will enhance Coastal Georgia’s standingas a Heritage Tourism destination.

2017 will be another crucial year for our organization as wetackle an ambitious schedule towards a grand opening of thenew museum next spring. This year’s challenges will includeraising $3 million to fund the project, working with Gallagheron exhibit research and design, and completing constructionto prepare the historic buildings. Like last year, one of thegreat joys of the year will be connecting with people in ourcommunity through the Home Front story. Our organizationhas fallen in love with the story and is wholly committed tocreating a dedicated space to commemorate a time in ourhistory when residents worked together to achieve a commongoal. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we trulyappreciate your belief in our mission and look forward to ourjourney together towards the opening of the new museumand beyond!

Due to Hurricane Matthew, the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, Museum Store, and administrative offices were closedOctober 6 and did not reopen until October 13. Overall, we estimate that the hurricane impacted three weeks of operations, reducing actual revenues for the month of October to half of the budget figures. Fortunately, the Society was able to absorbthe negative impact on October revenues and still finish the year ahead of budget. We are happy to report that storm damageto our sites and historic buildings was minimal.

Our successes are due to the dedication, commitment, love of history and support demonstrated by these faithful stewards. We extend our appreciation to these individuals who continue to devote their time and talent to the work of the Society serving asmuseum docents, tour guides, archives’ registrars and researchers, event volunteers, administrative office volunteers, archaeologyvolunteers, and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Lighthouse Crew.
