CoDesignS Collaborative Learning activities

Blue cards The learning activities in Blue are associated with the development of higher order cognitive skills (Bloom 1956; Kratwohl et al 1964; Toro-Troconis, 2016) encouraging to design and implement learning activities that encourage dialogue, collaboration, discussion and reflection.

The cards provide examples of learning activities that can be customised to suit the learning objectives.

Discuss the learning activities suggested and explore other options along the lines of the activities provided in the Blue cards keeping in mind the learners’ needs and learning context highlighted in Phase I.

Activities

MindMeister offers a powerful platform for designing branching activities. It provides the structure to introduce a topic and introduce deeper conversations and reflections allowing peer to peer interaction.

Case presentationsYou could use MindMeister to introduce a clinical case allowing the students to continue developing the case expanding on the potential differential diagnosis, investigations, final diagnosis and evidence based management plan.

Peer evaluationYou could ask learners to review each others cases reflecting on the different approaches presented.

Mindmap - MindMeister

‣ Use MindMeister’s mind map editor to create, share and present mind maps right inside your web browser. There’s no need to download the software or update it manually. All the maps are stored on the cloud, where they can be accessed via a Mac, Windows PC, Linux computer, Chromebook or mobile device.

‣ The mind maps can be easily shared among learners to collaborate in real-time. Just invite people via email or generate a shareable link in MindMeister. You decide who can edit the mind map or only view it.

Poll Everywhere

‣ Poll Everywhere lets you engage your audience or class in real time.

‣ Ask your learners a question with the Poll Everywhere App.

‣ Your learners answer in real time using mobile phones, Twitter, or web browsers.

‣ See your response live on the web or in a PowerPoint presentation.

Activities

Poll Everywhere is a communication tool that helps educators connect instantly with learners.

Instant feedbackUse polls when presenting/discussing Case Presentations, Ground Rounds or Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDT) meetings to asses attendees’’ understanding of the topics discussed.

Group discussionYou can encourage discussion and competition by grouping the learners and asking them to work on a specific question or case within a timeframe you set.

Educreations

‣ Educreations enable learners and educators to share ideas, collaborate, and learn new things.

‣ Record your voice and iPad® screen to create dynamic video tutorials that learners can access any time.

‣ Import documents and pictures from your Photo Library, Dropbox and Google Drive. Insert any webpage. Snap a photo or search the web for the perfect image, right within the App.

Activities

Reinforcing conceptsAsk learners to explain and record any concept presented before or after a Case Presentation, Ground Rounds or Multidisciplinary Team Meeting (MDT) to monitor attendees’ understanding of the topics discussed.

Group collaborationYou can encourage discussion by assigning attendees to groups; and then ask them to explain and record any concept or process and to then share the video with other groups in a safe and private classroom environment. This activity can be done remotely to encourage collaboration among online community of leaners.

Loomio

‣ Use Loomio for collaborative decision making.

‣ Visual summaries make it easy to quickly understand where everyone stands, and why.

‣ Achieve a clear outcome for every proposal, within the timeframe you set. Everyone gets notified of the results, so you can move forward and take action together.

Activities

Reinforcing conceptsPresent learners with different Pathologies and ask them to identify what Pathology refers to which Medical History and why by using the voting system.

Group collaborationYou can use Loomio to present different evidence based patient management plans, ask the attendees to comment on them and then to vote for the plans they consider most viable.

Activities

Group discussionYou can use Google forms to gather group feedback and encourage discussion and reflection after learners have engaged in more didactic activities (Green cards). For example, ask your learners to discuss a clinical case after attending a Case Presentation focusing on any ethical issues associated with the case. You can also ask the learners to search the literature highlighting similar cases and reflecting on it.

Activities

High-fidelity, low-fidelity or hybrid simulations can be also supported by the use of collaborative online tools before, during or after the learning activity.

Online productionYou could ask the learners to discuss some of the pathologies related to the clinical case before the simulation takes place and post their reflections on a blog: Schoology or use a Mind map: MindMeiser to organise the concepts associated with the pathologies.

Group discussionYou could also ask the learners to take photographs when taking part in the simulation and them critically appraise each other’s performance and provide constructive feedback using Educreations.

Simulations(high and low fidelity and hybrid) ‣ High-fidelity patient simulation refers to the use of

computerised mannequins that simulate real-life scenarios. It promotes skills acquisition, aids development of clinical judgment, and teaches learners about complex clinical situations with lifelike examples.

‣ Low-fidelity are simulations that are static and lack realism. For example, using a prosthetic arm that can be used to learn how to administer intramuscular injections or to take blood.

‣ Hybrid simulation combines the realism of a live patient and the physical components.

Case Presentation & Multidisciplinary Team (MDTs) meetings

Whenever a new patient is admitted, the patient will normally be presented at the next post take ward round. The goal of this case presentation is to pass along the “right amount” of patient information to a specific audience in an efficient fashion. When done well, this enables the listener to quickly understand the patient’s issues and generate an appropriate plan of action.

Activities

Present the case using a Mind mapYou could ask the learners to present the case using a Mind map: MindMeiser providing evidence of their enquiry process.

Providing feedback and encouraging reflectionYou could also ask the learners to upload their Case Presentation on a Blog: Schoology and provide feedback before and/or after the presentation. You could also ask other learners to critically appraise the cases.
