Reflex Activities
(birth 1 month)
Infants exercise thereflexes given at
birth.
New objects and
bodily movements
are attached to
reflexes.
E.g. sucking
This body movement
produces active
groping for a nipple.

Primary CircularReactions
(1-4 months)
2 This is the stage of learning new schemas.
Infants learn to discriminate the things they feel,
hear and see in their environment.
They learn through the continuous repetition of
newly acquired behavior.

Secondary CircularReactions
(5-8 months)
3 Childs activitiesare directed moreto external rather
than to own body.
This is the stage
wherein they
learn to imitate.
There is a
continuouslearning of newly
acquired behavior
through
repetition.

Coordination of Learned Schemas
(8-12 months)

coordinated to
develop more

Pre-operational stage
(2 7 years old)
Children are characterized by:
-Use of mental images and symbols
to process their thoughts
- inability to generalize their
thoughts accurately
- egocentrism
- being highly visual
- inability to understand the concept
of conservation

Concrete-operational stage
( 7- 12 years old)
Children are characterized by:
- decreased egocentrism
- increased centering on otherpeople such as playmates
- having the ability to reverse
perspective
- having the ability to understand theconcept of conservation

Formal-operational stage
(12 years old adulthood)
Children are characterized by:
-Having the ability to think logically
and abstractly
- having the ability to reason
rhetorically

Key Concepts of Piagets Theory of Development
Cognitive development is age-related.
Childrens schemes, or logical mental structures, change with
age and are initially action-based (sensorimotor) and later
move to a mental (operational) level.
Cognitive performance in children is directly associated with
the cognitive development stage they are in.
The childs cognitive development depends upon maturation,
physical experiences, social interaction, intellectual
development and the balance between experience and
organizing these into usable patterns.

Conclusion
Childrens actions are highly dependent on
what and how they think mentally. Their actionsare manifestations of what they think. They have
their own logicand only through observation that
we can understand the reasons behind them.
