Prospecting for treasure is a fourth-generation family passion forJames and Vince Gifford, and they’re justifiably proud of their

“Made In America” Tesoro Electronics products. Their father, Jack, founded Tesoro in a Phoenix, AZ, garage in 1980—the result of hisaffinity for electronics combined with the treasure-hunting legacyhanded down to him by his father and grandfather.

At the turn of the 19th century when gold fever was running high,Morgan Gifford, Jack’s grandfather, moved his family from theirranch in Idaho to Oregon, where he started a gold mine. Prospectingwas a family affair, with Morgan’s sons Aubrey and Norval (Jack’sfather) working in the mine together. During harvest season, though, the family’s focus changed; they labored as farm hands and traveledacross Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota. It was during oneof these harvest times that Norval met his future wife, Mayme. Theysoon married, and Norval moved his family to Arizona, where heworked for the Inspiration Mine in Miami, one of Arizona’s richestcopper-mining areas.

Norval and Mayme had three children: Glenna, Gloria, and Jack(who was born in Miami, AZ). After several years of mining and ashis family grew, Norval relocated to Phoenix and took a job withArizona Public Service (APS). When Jack graduated from high school,he tried several different jobs before becoming an Electronics Engineer. Before long it was clear that Jack’s inherited talent for creatingelectronic instruments had grown – along with his love of the historicCity of Prescott – into a true calling. Jack’s vision for a company of his

own was fulfilled in 1980, when with the help of his wife Myrna,Tesoro Electronics was founded. It took nearly a decade more beforetheir dream of living full-time in Prescott became reality, but in 1991the Gifford family - and Tesoro - were finally home.

Just as his father and grandfather had done, Jack shared his love ofthe hunt for treasures with his sons James and Vince. He involvedthem in every aspect of the family business, and the boys couldn’thave hoped for a more dedicated teacher. They learned all about therich history of mining and prospecting, the wide variety and evolutionof tools used over the years, and how radically things had changedsince their great-grandfather Morgan Gifford had begun his Oregongold mine so many years before. Jack taught James and Vince theimportance of quality and meticulous attention to detail in Tesoro’smanufacture of metal detection instruments, keeping them abreast ofall the latest developments in technology. The boys were hooked. In2004, Jack and Myrna were finally able to retire, knowing that thefamily business would now be in the capable hands of the sons who sofully embraced their twin passions: treasure hunting and Tesoro.

With James and Vince at the wheel today, Tesoro – the name thatmeans treasure – remains an industry leader, with an exciting array ofquality metal detectors, all backed by lifetime warranties. Jack andMyrna’s sons continue to carry the family legacy with pride, sharingthe pleasure of modern-day treasure hunting with their growing family of satisfied customers worldwide.

A Tale of Tesoro:The Family that Prospects Together, Prospers Together.

The DeLeón is named after the famous explorer Ponce deLeón, who searched Florida looking for treasure and the

fountain of youth.

The DeLeón is a TargetIdentification Detector orT.I.D. The DeLeón is designedas an easy to use, turn-on-and-go detector. The faceplate hasonly four controls: Sensitivity, Discriminate, Threshold and aMode Switch. It uses the same circuitry as the Cortés, so youcan expect the same depth and sensitivity from the DeLeónthat the Cortés is already well known for.

The DeLeón’s display screen is onecharacter high by eight characters wide.It is larger and easier to read than theCortés display.

Starting from left to right on the illustration, you will see that the DeLeón has a Coin Depth reading, a five segmentbar graph and a two digit Target ID Number. The bar graphshows several categories for ID purposes, but we recommendthat it be used with the ID Number for the most accurateinformation.

Bridgingthe Analog andDigital WorldsThe Cortés combines user-friendly analog controls with state

of the art digital signal processing to create an easy to useTarget Identification Detector. The Cortés doesn’t need severalbooks or videos so you can “unlock” its secrets. Simply turn it onand you’re ready to hunt.

In the Discrimination Mode, the Cortés uses a factory presetground balance. So there is no need to fiddle with a bunch ofcontrols.

The simple and functional meter gives you extensive amounts ofinformation to work with. The top row’s alphanumeric read outgives you target information in the broadest strokes. All targetsfall into one of four categories: Iron or Foil; Nickel, Pull Tab,Ring; Zinc Penny, Screw Cap; Copper Cent, Silver Coin. Thisbrief information leads you to the lower row’s more detailed data.

The most prominent feature on the lower row is a nine segmentbar graph. It shows all of the information that the detector sawduring the complete sweep of the coil. Full sweep data is helpfulin determining possible treasure/trash masking and odd-shapediron. We have also added a peak signal ID Number. The Cortésdisplays the largest part of the signal as a two digit number from 0 to 95. Iron reads as 0 and copper and silver coins read 95. By clearly defining the two ends of the scale, we were able to puthigher resolution into the middle range. This is the area wherepull tabs, nickels and gold rings intermingle. By using the bargraph and peak ID number, you are able to identify pull tabs andother trash that is native to your local area. Taking the time tolearn these pesky targets will ultimately lead to better finds andless trash digging.

To complement the digital display, we have added twoseparate features. The first is a three-position notch filterdiscrimination. Notch filter discrimination allows you to knock out a portion of the trash targets withoutaffecting other valuable targets.

The second is the Sum Mode. While in the SumMode, the Cortés averages coil sweeps and activates a multi-toneID. In use, the coil sweeps should be shortened to about 2” to4”. As the microprocessor compiles the target data, the ID toneschange. When the tones stop changing, the Cortés displays themost accurate target identification available.

For the more experienced user who may be searching for treasurein tougher surroundings, the Cortés offers an All Metal Modethat has a fully adjustable ground balance, which can be tuned tomeet almost any soil condition imaginable. While in the All MetalMode, the display continues to show all target information.

From the beginner to the pro, the Cortés is able to meet theneeds of any detectorist. Simple analog controls, easy to readdigital meter, preset or manual ground balance all housed in apackage that weighs less than three pounds with batteries.Who knew that full function target ID was so easy or fun!

The Tiger Shark uses microprocessor technology to create a true dual functionmachine. In Normal Mode, the Tiger Shark works like any other Tesoro detector.

On land, it can be used for coin and relic hunting and even gold prospecting. By usingthe four controls on the outside of the housing, you can fine-tune your detector to handlewhatever conditions you are working in.

Working in the wet salt area is where the Tiger Shark shines. In wet salt conditions, changes in the conductivity of the sand and surf cause most of the problems. The Tiger Shark uses a completely different set of internal settings in the SALT Modethan in the NORM Mode. There are no special controls or techniques to remember.

The Tiger Shark continues the tradition of other great Tesoro underwater machines byhaving interchangeable searchcoils.

The Sand Shark combines time-proven PI circuits with the latest digital technology creating the first microprocessor controlled PI

detector for the millennium.

Pulse Induction (PI) detectors have always been the natural choice for working wet salt beaches. Their circuitry and single loop coils will not see changes in salt-water conductivity that can drive a VLF-style detector crazy. Add Tesoro’s exclusive interchangeable Printed Spiral coils (available in four sizes) and you create a fantastic PI detector.

The Sand Shark has two distinct operating modes: VCO and Normal. Plus we’ve added a microprocessor to help you customizethe detector to your specific needs. The Pulse Width control allows you to tune your detector to the best balance of depth, sensitivity and battery life. You can also change the audio frequency in the Normal Mode. Simply use the “F” Adjust knob and set thetone and you’re ready to go.

The Tesoro Sand Shark will change the way that you think about Pulse Induction detectors.

Optional Searchcoils for the Lobo SuperTRAQ

The Silver Sabreseries has had a very

long history with TesoroElectronics. It was firstintroduced in 1983. In atime when “lunch box” detectors werethe norm, the original Silver Sabre was perceived as a toy unit.Advertised as “strong, simple and silent,” the Silver Sabre hasgone through many changes over the years. The Silver SabrePlus added a No-Motion All Metal circuit. The Silver Sabre IIadded a new plastic housing and new Hybrid Circuittechnology. Several years ago we introduced the Silver SabreµMax with an incredibly small housing and Max Boosttechnology. Many men bought one for their wife and woundup using it because it worked as well as any other detector.

We have decided to bring the Silver back full circle to where itstarted. The original Silver Sabre was a turn-on-and-godetector with Silent Search Discrimination and All MetalModes.

The Silver µMax uses amicroprocessor to control the

audio tone and battery test. It comes with an 8” concentric coil

and our latest plastic faceplate. Thenew Silver µMax returns to its rootsand offers strong, silent, andsimple operation once again.

The Tesoro Compadre was designed with the idea that less is more. This modest machine can do a lot of the same things thatits bigger brothers can do. It works great for coin hunting, competition hunting and relic hunting, but it does it without any

excess knobs. Switch on the detector and you’re working in a silent search, motion all metal mode. The farther you turn the knob, the more discrimination you can bring to bear on those trashy sites.

The Compadre has it all. One knob simplicity for the beginner and high gain circuitry and the famous Tesoro ED-180discrimination for the advanced user. If one detector can do all of this, maybe less is more.

Tesoro Clean SweepIt’s a simple fact: The more ground you search, the more treasure you find.

The Clean Sweep uses widescan technology to provide tip to tip sensitivity over itsentire 18” length. A wider detecting sweep means less time over unproductive groundand more time finding the goodies you want.

When you have a lot of ground to cover and not much time to do it in, better make it a Clean Sweep.
