James Holland rushed for 165 yards and Jake Melville added 163 – both career highs – as Colgate racked up a season-high 343 on the ground. The Raiders outgained JMU 463-298 overall and limited the Dukes to just 59 offensive plays. They entered the game averaging 80.9. COLGATE UNIVERSITY Location .................................... Trailing by six, James Madison had four cracks inside the Colgate 10 with the clock winding under four minutes. Three rushing plays netted five yards, and JMU called timeout to set the stage for fourth-and-goal from the Colgate 3. JMU quarterback Bryan Schor lofted his fourth-down pass toward the right corner of the end zone, intended for go-to receiver Brandon Ravenel. But cornerback Josh Ford batted the ball down for the defensive play of the game. Colgate then ground its way for a key first down and the Raiders ran off the final 1:06 for one of the biggest wins in program history.

ESPN3 COVERAGEThis week’s game is livestreamed by ESPN3 and also available as part of the ESPN College Extra package. Jim Barbar is calling the play-by-play, with Forrest Conoly on color and Bruce Copeland producing.

RAIDERS REACH NINE WINS FOR NINTH TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORYFor a program celebrating its historic 125th season of football, Colgate’s 2015 edition is breathing some rarified air. This year’s Raiders are 9-4, making them the ninth football team in Colgate history to get to nine wins.

THIRD-QUARTER RESURGENCEColgate’s 22 points scored thus far in the third quarter of its two playoff games are one more point than the Raiders tallied in 11 third-quarters during the regular season.

Colgate put eight points on the board at New Hampshire and then scored 14 last Saturday at James Madison. During the regular season, the Raiders managed seven points each against Cornell, Lafayette and Lehigh for a total of 21.

Colgate outgained UNH 155-22 in the third quarter of that contest, and then the Raiders rallied past JMU by outgaining the Dukes 106-22. In the two games combined, Colgate has a 261-44 yardage edge in the third period and has had the ball for 21:22 of the 30 minutes.

GATE SACK PATROLColgate’s three-man defensive front of Pat Afriyie, Brett Field and Alex Campbell has combined for 25 of the team’s Patriot League-leading 36 sacks. And all three were named to either the All-Patriot League first or second team.

Afriyie has 9½ sacks and already stands sixth on Colgate’s all-time season list. The sophomore is up to 14 for his career and that’s good enough for 10th on the Colgate chart. Field had a sack in each of the last four games of the regular season and eight for the year, tying for eighth on Colgate’s season listing. Campbell has 7½, and seven of those have come in the last six games. See charts left.

DIENER ECLIPSES 100 TACKLESLinebacker Kyle Diener goes into Saturday’s NCAA playoff game with a team- and Patriot League-high 121 tackles. It’s the best Colgate season tackle total since Mike Gallihugh posted 123 stops in 2007 and 140 in 2006.

Diener has posted game-highs of 10 tackles at New Hampshire and 12 at James Madison. The JMU game marked the seventh time this season Diener led or tied for

Page 3: COLGATE RAIDERSgocolgateraiders.com.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/2015/...Notes...1_.pdfCOLGATE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES ... 1,035--James Holland (2014-) 2003979 SEASON PASSING YARDAGE LEADERS

the team lead in tackles.

His pass breakup against Fordham’s two-point conversion try on the last play of the game preserved Colgate’s 31-29 victory and wound up being the championship decider.

DON’T LEAVE EARLYColgate won its seventh straight game last Saturday, and all seven have come by single digits. Starting with the Georgetown game Oct. 17, the Raiders have won by 4, 2, 9, 7, 4, 7 and most recently 6. That’s an average victory margin of just 5.6.

The seven-game winning streak is Colgate’s longest since the 2012 squad won its last seven of the regular season en route to the Patriot League title and NCAA playoffs.

FOURTH DOWN? GIVE HIM SIX!The Raiders this season have scored six TDs on fourth-down plays. Colgate leads the Patriot League and ranks eighth nationally in fourth-down conversions at 66.7 percent (28-of-42).

Colgate was exceptional in the Patriot League-clinching win against Lehigh, going 3-of-3 on fourth down conversions with TDs on all three plays. And none of them were gimmes.

Jake Melville scored the game’s first TD on a fourth-and-9 scamper that went 28 yards to pay dirt. The junior QB struck again in the second quarter, converting a fourth-and-1 into a 13-yard touchdown that made it 21-14. And then Demetrius Russell turned the trick in the third period as he took a fourth-and-1 handoff and bolted 9 yards for the score that made it 35-28.

COLGATE 13 HIGHLIGHT ALL-PATRIOT FOOTBALLIt wouldn’t be a perfect Colgate season without 13 Raiders on the 2015 All-Patriot League Football Team.

Colgate completed a 6-0 run through the Patriot League schedule for its eighth conference title, and then reaped the acclaim. Dan Hunt was named 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year and he led a league-high 12 Raiders onto this season’s first and second teams.

First-team members are linebacker Kyle Diener, tight end John Quazza, offensive linemen John Weber and Jordi Dalmau, and defensive lineman Pat Afriyie.

Second-team recipients are quarterback Jake Melville, defensive linemen Alex Campbell and Brett Field, tailbacks Demetrius Russell and James Holland, defensive back Ty McCollum and wide receiver John Maddaluna III.

HOLLAND FINDING PAY DIRTTailback James Holland is coming off another career performance. One week after scoring a career-high four touchdowns at New Hampshire, Holland carried 27 times for 165 yards -- both career highs -- in the win over James Madison.

The sophomore found the end zone two more times against the Dukes to give him six in Colgate’s two playoff games. Holland has reached the end zone 14 times in his last seven games and leads the Raiders with 15 TDs -- all rushing -- to account for 90 points. Holland enters Saturday’s game just 21 rushing yards shy of the 1,000 career mark.

MELVILLE PASSES INTO SEASON TOP 10Quarterback Jack Melville is passing his way up Colgate’s season top 10 yardage chart. The junior has completed 55.5 percent of his passes for 2,410 yards -- good enough for sixth all-time. See charts Page 2. He’s thrown 10 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

Melville’s streak of 209 passes without an interception ended last Saturday at James Madison. He’s throw just two picks in his last 378 attempts dating to last season. Melville also rushed for 163 yards against the Dukes to reach the 1,000-yard mark for the season on the dot.

In addition, Melville quarterbacked the Raiders to a perfect 6-0 Patriot League campaign and enters next year with a 9-0 record vs. the Patriot League.

RAIDER STATISTICAL LEADERSColgate’s Pat Afriyie leads the Patriot League in sacks with 0.73 per game (9½ total) and tackles-for-loss with 1.3 per game (17½ total). He’s second in forced fumbles with five. Nationally, Afriyie is ninth in forced fumbles, 18th in sacks per game, and 29th in TFLs.

James Holland is up to second in both rushing TDs with 15 and scoring at 8.2 ppg. Jake Melville is second in yards-per completion at 13.3 and rushing yards per carry at 5.8. John Maddaluna III is second in yards per reception at 15.3, and Ty McCollum second in passes defended with 16.

Colgate as a team leads the nation in fewest passes had intercepted with 2. The Raiders are tops in the Patriot League in fewest TFLs allowed (3.54), fewest sacks allowed (10), fewest turnovers lost (13), fourth-down conversion percentage (66.7), rushing offense (208.0) and time of possession (32:07).

RAIDERS CAPTURE EIGHTH PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPColgate’s Dan Hunt matched his mentor Dick Biddle when the Raiders outlasted Lehigh 49-42 to clinch the Patriot League championship. Hunt and Biddle both captured Patriot League titles for Colgate in just their second seasons as head coach.

Demetrius Russell and Jake Melville turned in career-high rushing performances as Colgate chalked up 316 rushing yards. Melville carried for 124 yards in the first half on his way to 132 and two TDs, while Russell compiled 95 of his 141 after intermission and also scored twice. Colgate finished the game 3-of-3 on fourth down conversions, with TDs on all three plays.

Colgate scored first and Colgate scored last. In between, the Raiders never trailed but also never led by more than seven points – 7-0, 7-7, 14-7, 14-14 … all the way to 49-42. It marks Colgate’s eighth Patriot League title and first since 2012.

THREE TIMES 1,000Colgate for possibly the first time in program history has three active players with at least 1,000 career rushing yards. Demetrius Russell is at 1,929 after just passing NFL great Marv Hubbard to join Colgate’s top 20. Jake Melville is at 1,583 and John Wilkins 1,035 to complete the trifecta. James Holland (979) needs just 21 yards to become the fourth active member. See chart Page 2.

RAIDERS HONOR ADAMS, DEPUYColgate is honoring the memory of Ryan Adams ’19 and Carey Depuy ’19, both of whom died Sept. 20 in a small plane accident. The Raiders are wearing helmet stickers with the two students’ initials for the remainder of the season.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Colgate forced an opening-drive turnover and turned it into points, and the Raiders added a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Jake Melville to John Quazza. But Navy controlled in between and posted a 48-10 decision in the season-opener for both teams. The Raiders were up to the task early as Navy on its first possession faced 3-and-20 from its own 5-yard line. Navy’s Chris Swain carried for 17 yards but was struck by Kyle Diener. Swain fumbled and Colgate’s Keyon Washington was on the spot for the recovery. Colgate marched to the Navy 2 and converted a Jo-nah Bowman field goal for a 3-0 lead. But Navy rebounded with a field-goal drive on its ensuing possession and then scored four touchdowns before halftime for a 31-3 lead at intermission. It was 38-3 when Melville lofted one to the left side-line. Quazza hauled it in and made his way into the checkerboard end zones for Colgate’s first touchdown of the season.

2015 SEASON REVIEW

New Hampshire 26COLGATE 8Sept. 12 -- Andy Kerr Stadium, Hamilton

New Hamp. 7 13 3 3 -- 26Colgate 0 0 0 8 -- 8

HAMILTON – Colgate’s offense again showed signs of a fourth-quarter rally, but No. 12/15 New Hampshire held off the Raider charge in a 26-8 decision. Intermittent showers and the UNH defense damp-ened Colgate hopes for the first three quarters. The Wildcats led 23-0 and the Raiders had reached the red zone just once, when a 17-play drive was halted at the UNH 14. But the Raiders scored on their first possession of the fourth period when Jake Melville hit Alex Greenawalt with a 13-yard pass along the right sideline of the end zone. Melville’s lofting two-point conversion pass was hauled in by John Quazza and the Raiders trailed 23-8. Christian Hardegree then came up with his first ca-reer interception to put Colgate right back in business at the UNH 22. The Raiders picked up a first down at the Wildcat 12 but then were halted on fourth-and-8 when Melville couldn’t escape a heavy rush. The teams traded possessions before New Hamp-shire’s Christian Breda tacked on his second field goal of the game with 2:04 remaining for the final margin. Linebacker Kyle Diener was Colgate’s defensive stal-wart, posting a career-high 14 tackles including seven solo. Hardegree, Keyon Washington and Pat Afriyie added eight tackles apiece.

Yale 7 0 7 15 -- 29Colgate 7 14 0 7 -- 28

HAMILTON – Colgate appeared headed for its first win of the season before a late Yale rally turned the tables in a 29-28 heartbreaker. Cameron Buttermore scooped up a fumble and raced 55 yards for a touchdown, and the Raiders rushed for three touchdowns but it wasn’t enough. Yale scored two TDs in a 3:40 stretch of the fourth quarter and added a surprise two-point conversion for the winning margin. After Yale opened the contest with a 14-play touch-down drive, Colgate took control of the game for the ma-jority of the next three quarters. Junior John Wilkins brought the Raiders level with a 2-yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter. In the second period, Jake Melville added a 20-yard rushing TD and the fumble return by Buttermore gave Colgate a 21-7 margin at the break. Linebacker Pat Afriyie caused the fumble on the quarterback sack, one of 2½ sacks he had in the game. Buttermore’s pickup and rumble for the score was his first career touchdown.

COLGATE 31Holy Cross 14Sept. 26 -- Fitton Field, Worcester, Mass.

Colgate 0 10 0 21 -- 31Holy Cross 7 7 0 0 -- 14

WORCESTER, Mass. – Colgate turned to a familiar script – Colgate Football – to register a big first victory. The Raiders ran at will and played lights-out defense to spoil the Holy Cross homecoming in a 31-14 triumph. Colgate scored the game’s final 28 points, including three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, to put a big digit into the win column. After three tough losses to start the season, Colgate sits alone atop the Patriot League standings. The Raiders rushed for 266 yards and piled up 411 yards of total offense in winning their fourth straight over Holy Cross. It’s the longest Raider streak in the series since six in a row from 2001-06. James Holland led the backfield attack with a career-high 141 yards on 24 carries. The Raiders trailed 14-3 late in the second quarter and 14-10 early in the fourth. But Colgate put 21 on the board in the final period, capped by Chris Morgan’s in-terception and 60-yard return for a touchdown. Colgate’s revamped offensive line paved the way for Saturday’s success. Max Hartzman (center) and Matt McDowell (right guard) made their first collegiate starts, and both Jordi Dalmau (left guard) and John Weber (left tackle) were in new positions. Only Grant Siegel was in his familiar role at right tackle.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Colgate withstood a furious Cornell fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Big Red in a 28-21 thrill-er Friday night. The Raider win was Colgate’s seventh straight over their Central New York rivals and 17th in the last 19 meetings dating to 1993. Colgate amassed a 419-176 yardage edge through three quarters and led 28-7. But Cornell showed why it could have won both of its first two games against Buck-nell and Yale by refusing to go quietly. Big Red quarterback Robert Somborn threw for 231 yards in the final 15 minutes and nearly brought his team all the way back. Cornell trailed 28-21 and had first-and-goal at the Colgate 10 inside the final minute before the Raider defense stood tall to preserve the victory. Colgate’s Jake Melville had his best game of the sea-son, completing 18-of-28 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns and also rushing for 97 yards and another score. Receiver John Maddaluna III had a career night with 10 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. Tailback John Wilkins led the Raiders with 106 rush-ing yards, and Melville just missed joining him at the century mark with 97. Both Wilkins and Melville posted rushing TDs.

Colgate 7 7 0 6 -- 20Princeton 7 9 14 14 -- 44

PRINCETON, N.J. – Undefeated Princeton used a decisive third quarter and a pair of late touchdowns to defeat Colgate 44-20. The Raiders pulled within 16-14 at halftime thanks to a 62-yard, five-play drive that culminated in Demetrius Russell’s second TD carry of the afternoon. It was the third straight game Colgate scored a late first-half TD. But Princeton produced third-quarter touchdown drives of 72 and 75 yards to pull ahead, 30-14. Colgate erased one of those scores on a Jake Mel-ville-to-John Quazza TD pass on the opening play of the fourth quarter. After the two-point conversion pass failed to keep the score 30-20, Colgate had another chance when Pat Afriyie forced a fumble on a quarterback sack and Colgate recovered at the Tiger 24. But the Raider drive stalled and then the field-goal try never got off the ground. It was Colgate’s second failed field goal attempt of the afternoon. Melville finished 25-of-42 passing for a career-high 318 yards and a touchdown. Chris Morgan was the tack-le leader after matching his career best with 14 stops.

COLGATE 17Georgetown 13Oct. 17 -- Cooper Field, Washington, D.C.

Colgate 7 10 0 0 -- 17Georgetown 0 0 0 13 -- 13

WASHINGTON – Colgate completed a daunting stretch of four straight road games with three wins, capped by Saturday’s 17-13 triumph at Georgetown. The Raiders held off the host Hoyas in the final quar-ter to make it 12 wins in 13 games against Georgetown. Colgate led 17-0 entering the fourth before George-town put two field goals and a touchdown on the board, helped by a successful onside kick, to make it a game. But Colgate iced the victory by taking over with 4:34 remaining and running out the clock. The big play was a fourth-and-1 conversion run by Jake Melville. Colgate continued a season-long trend by converting three of four fourth-down conversions. The Raiders are now 17-of-27 (63.0) after entering the game first in the Patriot League in that category. A huge play in the game saw Colgate convert fourth-and-1 from its own 39 with 2½ minutes remaining and the Raiders clinging to a 17-13 lead. Colgate emptied the backfield and Melville followed Ryan Paulish and Matt McDowell on the right side of the line and tight end John Quazza for a 2-yard gain. Two plays later, James Holland got loose for 15 yards and the game was all but decided. Holland wasn’t 100 percent after having been side-lined two games by injury, but the sophomore bullied his way to 69 tough yards on 14 rushing attempts. He also turned in his first two-TD game, scoring from 8 yards in the first quarter and 2 yards in the second.

Fordham 3 6 0 20 -- 29Colgate 14 10 0 7 -- 31

HAMILTON – Kyle Diener batted down a Fordham two-point conversion pass on the last play of the game to cap Colgate’s wild 31-29 victory. Colgate appeared to have the game in hand when James Holland scored on a 7-yard run that made it 31-16 with 6:06 remaining. And although Fordham scored with 27 seconds left to cut the gap to 31-23, Raider fans still were feeling confident. But the Rams recovered an onside kick at their own 46-yard line and immediately advanced to the Colgate 20 on a 34-yard pass play. After one incompletion into the end zone, Fordham’s Kevin Anderson lofted another pass into the corner where Corey Caddle emerged from a crowd with the football for a touchdown as the score-board clock showed 0:00. Colgate dodged the initial PAT attempt on an incom-plete pass, but the Raiders were called for pass interfer-ence. But with just 1½ yards separating Fordham from the end zone and overtime, Diener blitzed, read the pass attempt and batted it harmlessly to the ground.

Colgate 0 14 7 7 -- 28Lafayette 13 0 3 3 -- 19

EASTON, Pa. – Colgate turned a bumpy start into a workmanlike performance and made its way past Lafay-ette 28-19 here Saturday. The Raiders on their opening three possessions lost a fumble on the kickoff, turned it over on downs in their own territory, and then went three-and-out. Lafayette scored after each Raider miscue and led 13-0. But Colgate rallied with a pair of second-quarter scor-ing drives to lead 14-13 at intermission, and the Raiders held the advantage throughout the second half. Lafay-ette drew as close as 21-19 early in the fourth before Colgate put together another lengthy scoring march to ice the contest. Three of Colgate’s four TD drives went for 12, 13 and 12 plays, and covered no fewer than 71 yards. James Holland was the beneficiary of all three of those drives, scoring touchdowns from 2, 1 and 1 yards out for his first career three-TD game. Ty McCollum made sure the Leopards didn’t have a late push by intercepting his second pass of the game with 2:58 remaining. The senior cornerback also picked Lafayette’s pocket just before halftime and now has the team lead with three. His was the first Colgate multi-interception game since Mike Armiento nabbed a pair at Cornell in 2013.

HAMILTON – Colgate combined just enough offense with a stout defense when it counted to defeat Bucknell 14-10. Jake Melville and Demetrius Russell carried for sec-ond-quarter touchdowns, and the Raider defense made them stand. Bucknell scored on a flea-flicker touchdown pass in the third quarter and a 19-yard field goal to open the fourth. Then with the Bison driving into Raider territory and just over four minutes remaining, Colgate safety Joe Figueroa stepped in front of a pass for his second inter-ception of the season. The Raiders ground the last 4:03 off the clock to wrap up their fifth straight victory and seventh in the last eight. Colgate compiled five sacks in the game, led by Alex Campbell and Brett Field with two apiece. The Raid-ers took over the conference lead with 34, surpassing Bucknell’s 33. The Bison sacked Colgate’s Jake Melville three times – his first takedowns since the Princeton game Oct. 10. The Raiders completed a perfect 6-0 run through the Patriot League. Not since the 2003 squad went 7-0 has a Colgate team compiled as many as six conference wins in a season. Melville finished 8-of-22 passing for 163 yards. Four of those completions went to John Maddaluna III, who nearly matched his career high with 134 yards. This was Maddaluna’s third 100-yard game of the season. Colgate head coach Dan Hunt improved his Patriot League record to 9-3.

NCAA DIV. I FCS PLAYOFFS (First Round) DURHAM, N.H. – Colgate outlasted New Hampshire 27-20 to record its first FCS playoff victory since 2003. James Holland scored a career-high four touch-downs – one in each quarter. The sophomore capped scoring drives of five, 11, 10 and 17 plays. Those last two TD marches helped Colgate com-pletely dominate the third quarter to the tune of 12 min-utes and 44 seconds of ball possession and a 155-22 yardage edge. Colgate’s final touchdown – a 2-yard burst by Holland – capped a 17-play, 81-yard drive that took 10:34 off the clock. The Raiders led 27-6 with 12:16 remaining. But UNH would not go away, as the Wildcats rallied for 14 quick points in the final period. The Wildcats really looked to be in business when they hopped on a Colgate fumble and took over at the Raider 43 with 4:29 to play, trailing 27-20. But four plays later, Colgate staved off UNH’s last real threat when Tyler Castillo picked off a deflected Wildcat pass. The Raiders managed a key first down and then held on for their first playoff win since the historic 2003 run to the national championship game.

COLGATE 44James Madison 38Dec. 5 -- Bridgeforth Stad., Harrisonburg, Va.

Colgate 10 14 14 6 -- 44James Mad. 0 28 3 7 -- 38

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Colgate won another nail-biter and knocked off another CAA foe on the road with a 44-38 triumph over No. 5 James Madison. James Holland rushed for 165 yards and Jake Mel-ville added 163 – both career highs – as Colgate racked up 343 on the ground. The Raiders outgained JMU 463-298 overall and, more importantly, limited the Dukes to just 59 offensive plays. They entered averaging 80.9. Trailing by six, James Madison had four cracks inside the Colgate 10 with the clock winding down. Three rush-ing plays netted five yards, and JMU called timeout to set the stage for fourth-and-goal from the Colgate 3. JMU quarterback Bryan Schor lofted his fourth-down pass toward the right corner of the end zone, intended for go-to receiver Brandon Ravenel. But cornerback Josh Ford batted the ball down for the play of the game.
