Alfred Stieglitz meets Léonard Misonne Both gentlemen probably never even met during their lives but they were familiar with each other’s work. And what’s more they were the icons of pictorialism, both with a strong international reputation. Alfred Stieglitz as an American gallery owner, photographer and publisher of the world-famous “Camera Work” and Léonard Misonne as a Belgian photographer and one of the pioneers of European pictorialism. They both gathered a network of important photographers around them. Stieglitz meets Misonne combines the work of the photographers who published in Camera Work (Stieglitz, Steichen, Demachy, White, Kühn, etc) with the work of photographers from Léonard Misonne’s circle (Marissiaux, Borrenbergen, Lejeune, Vanderkindere, Populaire, etc.).

Pictorialism in Belgian Photo history Pictorialism is an important art movement in Belgian photo history between 1880 and 1920 and is at the same time the domain of expertise of Xavier Debeerst. Léonard Misonne is by far the best known Belgian pictorialist. However, he is definitely not the only one. The exhibition offers the unique opportunity to discover those other great Belgian pictorialists, such as Alexandre, Marcel Vanderkindere, Edmond Sacré, Gustave Marissiaux, …. An exceptional overview of an extremely fascinating period in photo history during which photography finally conquers its full status among the arts. A period during which the different arts seem to blend seamlessly into one another.

Page 5: Collector's Room Update #1: Stieglitz meets Misonne

International Pictorialism You should look at them as Facebook groups avant-la-lettre, the many national and international associations of pictorialists : Association Belge de Photographie in Belgium, the prestigious Linked Ring in England, The Photo-Secession in the United States and the Photo-Club de Paris in France. This is also the era of the many magnificent magazines, with Camera Work by Alfred Stieglitz being the best known. The Collector’s Room Update #1 : Stieglitz meets Misonne has been built up around original photogravures from Camera Work. The work of Alfred Stieglitz, Clarence H. White, Edward Steichen and Robert Demachy enter into a fascinating dialogue with the work of the Belgian pictorialism.
