Being a Peacemaker Part 2Last week we looked at the ways that people respond to conflict. We saw that:1. Conflict is a slippery slope with different ways of responding. • Escape Responses which never see

conflict resolved• Attack Responses which just make

conflict worse, and the best plan:• Work-It-Out Responses which are a

balanced way to resolve conflict. We also saw that:2. Conflict starts in the heart3. Choices have consequences4. Wise-way choices are better than my-way choices, and5. The blame game makes conflict worse.Below are the final and positive ways of looking at conflict. Please share these with your children.6. Conflict is an opportunity. By handling it right we get a chance to: • glorify God, • serve others and • become better people. Conflict is not necessarily bad or destructive. Even when conflict is caused by wrong-doing and causes a great deal of stress, it can lead to good. These concepts are totally overlooked in most conflicts because people naturally focus on escaping from the situation or

on overcoming/beating their opponent. Therefore, it is wise to step back from a conflict and ask yourself whether you are doing all you can to take advantage of these special opportunities.7. The “Five A’s” can resolve conflict. These simple steps will almost always lead to peace. Children, like adults, can learn to confess their wrongs in a way that demonstrates they are taking full responsibility for their part in a conflict.• Admit what you did wrong. Include

both wrong desires and bad choices. • Apologize for how your choice

affected the other person. Express the sorrow you feel.

• Accept the consequences for your wrongdoing without argument or excuses.

• Ask for forgiveness. • Alter your choice in the future. Think

over and plan how you are going to act differently next time.

Why not practise these “Five A’s” at home as you deal with sibling rivalry or with other conflicts? Next week I will look at forgiveness. “Finally…be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11Sue

Oh, just one more thing...

A bit of wondering. There are some unfortunate misconceptions about our HSC results last year. Contrary to some comments being made, our results from an unusually small group of students last year (28 students), include:• three students attending university

this year and another one who has deferred

• two students who gained Band 6 (HSC marks of 90+)

• five students who gained an ATAR over 75

One of our 2014 Graduates was also awarded a University Medal for distinguished results for a First Year university student. Not to forget all of the other students who worked very hard to receive results which reflected their efforts. If you have concerns regarding our performance I’d be happy to talk to you about our results as would our Head of Senior School, Mrs Casey. Please contact us at school if you hear information which contradicts this.

The early followers of Jesus had a massive task in bearing witness to what Jesus said and did on earth. In Acts we see the continuation of what Jesus began to do and teach in the Gospels. He encouraged his disciples to continue his work and build his church. He wanted them to testify to God’s greatness, not only in Jerusalem amongst the Jews but to the whole world.

Jesus did not expect them to do this without help. In John 16 and again in John 14:16 it says “...He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever”. The Holy Spirit brought power to the disciples to help them continue to do the work they had seen Jesus do. What does this mean to us 2000 years later? Exactly the same… We are to be witnesses of Jesus to all people, not to show prejudice nor disdain but in all we say and do, wherever we go, to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us so that those around us will see God.

Year 6 Camp Canberra

Year 6 students have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

Students visited Parliament House, the War Memorial, the Australian Mint, Telstra Tower, the Museum of Australian Democracy as well as the well-known Questacon centre. Mr East

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

JS HUSHATHON

An amazing silence fell over Junior School on Tuesday this week when

students participated in a ‘Hushathon’ to raise money for our two sponsor

children from the Philippines, Milo and Nikolou.

Our students proved to be very effective in using their nonverbal

communication skills and a great day was had by all (particularly teachers)!

This activity supports the College mission and service philosophy of caring

for those less fortunate.

Sponsorship money is due back by Friday 1 April.

‘Questacon’ had lots of exhibitions that included robots, loads of information and fun science games. All of the exhibitions I went to, I learned things. Jack Drayton

We visited the Senate. We listened to a debate on how we treat our returned Army and Navy people. Then we talked to an assistant of Pat Conroy’s and asked him questions. For our final activity we acted out being members of the Senate. It was an interesting and educational trip and I’m sure that everyone learned something about how our country is run. Lauren Potter

“We went to many interesting things but the best by far

was Old Parliament House, because it was interactive. There were cool games and a role playing activity and we

all learned lots.”

Saturday 5 March2016 Equestrian Expo

The 2016 Equestrian Expo was held on Saturday 5 March at the Matcham Valley Pony Club grounds in beautiful Holgate. Competitors all represented their schools and came from as far south as the Hawkesbury and north to the Hunter Valley. Charlton Christian College was represented by Jessica (Year 1) and Amelia Razon (Year 4).

Jessica rode for the very first time in competition that day on her pony Poppy in the Showman 4 class for Years K-2. She had a fantastic time and was well rewarded for her efforts. Jessica won 1st place in her Led class, 1st place in her Show horse class, 1st place in her Dressage test and 2nd place in her Rider class. She was awarded overall Age Champion!

Amelia competed on her pony Nawarrah Park Caraway in the Showman 4 Class for Yrs 3-6. Competitors were of a very high standard and Amelia did well to achieve a 5th place in her Riding class and a 5th place in her Show horse class. She was also very excited to see her best friend and fellow Charlton student Natasha Gallacher there to cheer her on.
