through volunteer attorneys andparalegals at the Gonzales Com-munity Center from 9 a.m. to 5p.m. IELAA provides assistancein the following legal areas: di-vorce (legal separation), child cus-tody, paternity, tenant rights(evictions), collections, domesticviolence, expungements, andsmall claims.According to the association’sbrochure, the founders wanted tomake legal services available forall those who could not afford tohire an attorney or who cannotspeak or write in English. IELLAreceives funding from nonprofitorganizations, such as United Wayand Inland Counties Legal Serv-ices and the State Bar of Califor-nia Legal Services Trust Fund.Eloise Gomez-Reyes, 58, whoruns her own legal law firm out ofan elegant refurbished Victorianstyle house located across city

hall, has volunteered every Mon-day since last summer. She saidthe ability to potentially providelegal assistance to hundreds ofpeople is what motivated her topursue law in the first place.“The reason I became an attor-ney is to help my community,”she said. “For me personally, itfulfills a great need. I knew thecommunity needed attorneys whospoke Spanish. For that reason myexperience with IELLA has beenvery important to me.”Raquel Zarate of Colton—re-cently divorced and in debt, afterpaying over $15,000 in legalfees— received some family legaladvice from the IELLA. She saidmeeting with an IELLA volunteerhas provided with much neededclarity to resolve her divorce case.“I’m very appreciative of thisservice,” said Zarate. “It hashelped me receive a clear under-standing of what I need to do toget out of my difficult situation.

Riverside County Judge HeliosHernandez believes the IELLA isdoing “terrific work” and ispleased to know Gomez-Reyes istemporarily leading the organiza-tion.“There are two reasons why theIELLA is important to the com-munity,” Hernandez described.“The organization serves an un-derrepresented population whootherwise would not be served atall and because these lawyershave a real stake in it.”Clients are seen on a first come, first served basis that is subject tovolunteer attorney availability. For more information on legalclinics, call (951) 369-3009.

Hop to it:Easter fun

abounds in theInland Empire

With most Americans gettingtheir political knowledge purelyfrom modern sources of sensa-tionalized media, there is a lack ofrespect that self-described “in-formed voters” have for anyonewho disagrees with their “correctknowledge.”

Many times I’ve seen talk-showhosts curse out members of the op-posing political ideology only to

be retaliated with bleeps. Withoutmutual respect and indoctrinatedby media to have an elitist attitude, voters push their representatives toundermine the success of the otherparty and to continuously electrepresentatives who share their ex-treme views.

Congress has been bickeringover partisan bills, while mattersthey agree on are neglected. This

new Congress passed the partisanKeystone XL pipeline instead ofworking on bipartisan corporatetax reform. With the United Statesin one of its most dire economicstraits as the deficit continues togrow, bipartisanship seems morenecessary than ever.

Permanent solutions to California’sdrought

The newspapers and TV are fullof information on the drought inthe state of California. Some arepushing rationing, but no one is of-fering permanent solutions. Iwould like to offer some solutionsI feel could be accomplished if“the powers that be” had thewillpower to pursue them.

First, new construction couldhave a gray water filtering systemfor reuse. Existing buildings couldbe retrofitted which would be ex-pensive, but maybe our govern-ment could give tax breaks orassistance. Seeding of clouds arebeing done, but not near enough.California has numerous cloudsand fog that pass over us without

being seeded. Which means neigh-boring states receive the rain thatshould have been ours.

We need to build an aqueductfrom the East Coast to the WestCoast, with outlets reaching vari-ous states. When some states areflooded, the flood waters could bediverted to the main aqueduct andmoved to areas that can use it.Dams could be built to generateelectricity for power to push thewater over mountains and the extraelectricity could be sold to munic-ipalities.

I know, your first thought is itwould cost a lot of money. Well, just look at what our government

is spending now on pork barrel anduseless studies, as well as floodcontrol and the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency.

Also, I’m sure some think it’s animpossible engineering feat. Well, look what was accomplished byancient Romans and Indians likethe Mayans. Or modern time ac-complishments like the Sacra-mento Delta or the Works ProgressAdministrations (WPA) projects. These things could all be accom-plished if we had good leaders.

Mary Ann Rohde,Yucaipa

Cooperative spirit a mustWe could begin by looking at the

current climate in Washington andrealizing that it doesn’t matter whois elected in 2016. Until the twoparties start working together, aDemocratic or Republican presi-dent won’t make a difference. Bothparties have created an atmosphereof distrust and an inability to makechanges for the benefit of the citi-

zens who elected them.

We need a president who can stopthis us-against-them posturing andprovide real leadership. Someonewho will put partisan politics asideand govern. We need a presidentwho can bring the parties together— create true compromise and getthings done. Being a disgruntled

Republican, I don’t see anyone onthe current list of possible candi-dates who would be fit to lead, ex-cept maybe John Kasich.

Who will be the Ronald Reaganand Tip O’Neill of our time?

Claudia Lening,Chino Hills

Bipartisanship more necessary than everWith most Americans getting

their political knowledge purelyfrom modern sources of sensation-alized media, there is a lack of re-spect that self-described “informedvoters” have for anyone who dis-agrees with their “correct knowl-

edge.”

New book chronicles how Little Leaguer'searned big league treatment in Colton

By Harvey M. Kahn

The Road to Williamsportis not just a book aboutthe success of two Little

League teams from Colton in the1950's, it is 306 pages of illus-trated history detailing timeswhen youth baseball was rela-tively unknown and how enor-mously popular it became due inlarge part from Colton's efforts. The Road to Williamsport por-trays a group of 12-year-olds fromthe small town of Colton whoovernight became America'sposter boys. Author Ted Housleyverifies the accounts of his bookfrom newspaper clippings andfirst hand reports filed by his latemother, Nellie. Housley assembles an easy toread diary about the 1954 and1956 Colton Lion's Club LittleLeague all-star teams, who bothovercame overwhelming odds tomake it to the Little League WorldSeries in Williamsport. The bookis officially titled "The Road to

Williamsport: My Scrapbook ofMemories." It tells of numeroussub plots to its youth baseballtheme by reliving the formativeyears of Little League Baseball inColton from 1952 to 1956.Housley credits Danny Car-

rasco with being his chief histo-rian on the two-year project.Carrasco played on the 1954Colton all-star team and on the1955 team that nearly made it athree-peat, but lost to San Diegoin the Western Region semifinals.Although Housley's mothercompiled the scrapbooks becauseher oldest son Norm was on the1954 Colton team and youngerson, Ted was on the 1956 team, the book is not top heavy with aHousley slant. Nor does TedHousley try to use the good nameof Ken Hubbs to promote thebook. While Hubbs went on to be-come the 1961 National Leaguerookie-of-the-year, Housley doesnot elevate Hubbs above the littleleague team, instead shows howhe was simply a major player to

something much greater. Housleymentioned that because ofColton's early success on and offthe field, that it was consideredfor the Little League nationalheadquarters instead ofWilliamsport. The Road to Williamsport tellsin graphic details how the teamsboarded the train at the formerSouthern Pacific depot in Coltonto begin a four-day trip toWilliamsport, Pennsylvania. Inthose days a team had to remainundefeated to advance throughthe area, district, sectional and re-gional little league champi-onships. Along with Hubbs, theteam had others like John Doty,Norm Housley, Jerry Magnessand Tom Hinkle who all eventu-ally signed pro baseball contracts.Their exploits in Williamsportwere pictured by Associated Pressin newspapers nationwide.Catcher Clarence Brumm waspictured in Life Magazine blow-ing a big chewing gum bubble.Ted Housley was one of a hand-

ful that made both the 1954 and1956 trips to Williamsport. Onceas a player and another accompa-nying his brother's team. Headeptly transforms his one-of-akind book into a museum-likedocument. It indicates how theseyoung stars unknowingly weregoodwill ambassadors, who cameback to Colton more mature afterthey saw the substandard treat-ment of others as they traveledthrough American's Southernstates. Among the photos is an originalphoto of THEE Cy Young posingin Williamsport with the 1954team. Housley then included arare photo of another Coltongreat, Camilo Carreon withHubbs, Doty, Norm Housleyand former Colton mayor Mel-lvile Fuchs. All five are no longeralive. Many other Colton civicleaders are pictured throughoutwith the team.In fact, the book is filled withphotos, proclamations, world se-ries tickets, rosters, schedules, telegrams, box scores and at least75 news articles that cannot befound anywhere else. Housleyproves how these little men fromthe town of Colton, population15,000 became local stars withphotos of fans lining up for auto-graphs to prove it. In 2013, both teams were in-ducted into the Colton Sports Hallof Fame and continue to be hon-ored guests at numerous Coltonevents. In observance of the 75thanniversary of little league in2014, living team members wereasked to throw out the first pitchon opening day and at the districttournament held at the Ken HubbsLittle League on Max Lofy Field. At one time nearly 4,000 wellwishers would congregate to seethem, however Housley and Car-rasco admit that time has causedthose crowds to dwindle signifi-cantly. For team members those specialtimes will never dwindle, creatinga tight fraternal order that haslived within them for a lifetime.Housley tells side stories that fur-ther tightened their bond, such asthe number of Colton players whohad family confined to wheel-chairs, or who had a father diewhen they were pre-teens. The

book is brutally honest about thesegregation in Colton and abouteven worse examples of discrim-ination the teams saw when theirtrain stopped in places like NewOrleans. Housley tells how hall of fameannouncer Mel Allen, the voice ofthe New York Yankees, providedtelevision and radio play-by-playfor their world series games. Then, the voice of the Los Ange-les Rams, Bob Kelly announcedtheir regional games from SantaMonica on KHJ-Channel 9. Hous-ley explains how the 1954 Coltonteam won 12 straight wins tomake the championship game, where it lost to New York, 7-5.Ted Housley's 1956 team won 13straight but lost in the semifinalsto Delaware, 2-0.Carrasco and the late Jerry Mag-ness were both on the 1954 and55 teams. Magness died less thantwo months after being inter-viewed for the book by Housley.Another amazing story Housleyincludes is that ofWayne Thorn-ton, a member of the near-miss1955 Colton team. Thornton hadpitched only one game in the reg-ular season. In the all-star play-offs, Thornton threw a no-hitter,two one-hitters and won anotherwith a two-hitter. The Road to Williamsport de-scribes the pain that members ofboth teams feel as time goes on.More than half the 28 total play-ers have died. Some from wellpublicized events and ailments. Those like Carrasco, who wrotethe book's foreward also getcalled to present eulogy's, like theone for teammate Jerry Magness.Housley does not only put intowords and illustration lastingmemories, he creates the illusionof the crack of the wooden bat,the feel of a game winning homerun, the taste of bubble-gum andthe smell of popcorn and hotdogs. Housley sells the Road toWilliamsport on CD for $15 each. Housley and Carrasco will ap-pear at Ken Hubbs LL on MaxLofy Field for opening cere-monies on April 11th. They willsell the CD there for $10. He led a distinguished 25-yearcareer as a classroom teacher andeducation administrator with SB-CUSD and Riverside County Su-perintendent of Schools. Hedeveloped a specialty in bilingualcurricula development and Eng-lish-as-a-Second language. Díazwas a Master Teacher creating en-hanced teaching methods. He de-veloped teacher workshopsutilizing puppetry, art, and variousmedia techniques. He also sold en-cyclopedias in the Westside, rea-soning that an encyclopedia in thehome was an effective way to im-part knowledge to the whole fam-ily.

Díaz was a passionate advocatefor the Latino community in SanBernardino. He worked with CésarChavez, Fred Ross, CruzNevarez, and Community ServiceOrganization. In that effort, he be-came a Deputy Registrar and reg-istered many new voters. He servedas a scoutmaster, public librarytrustee, and was a founding mem-ber of several local organizations, including: Mexican American Po-litical Assn. (MAPA), Associationof Mexican American Educators(AMAE), Casa Ramona, Sinfo-nia Mexicana, Inland EmpireLatino Art Association, and oth-ers. Outgoing and self-assured,Díaz would tell friends that theywere too lackadaisical when itcame to political injustice, and as-serted, “You’re too comfortablewith the status quo!” As presidentof AMAE, he sought funding in1969 from the County War-on-Poverty Program to develop a tu-toring/counseling program for theWestside. Because Diaz's proposalmet the criteria, the AMAE projectwas established with $17,000 ofunallocated County funds. It wasthe first time that this statewide ed-ucators organization received grantmonies - from any agency. His suc-cessful after-school program in-spired others in the Westside toseek additional services that after-wards resulted in the establishmentof Casa Ramona and the VillaseñorBranch Library.During the national turmoil

marked by the Viet Nam War,Cambodia invasion, and raging stu-dent protests, Governor Reagan, in1970 shut down the University ofCalifornia and State college sys-tems. Cal State San Bernardino stu-dents saw an opportunity to createtheir own university. They asked"idled" faculty to lead it, but theyrefused. Because Díaz was activein the community, the studentsturned to him to take on the task.He accepted, and Leno Díaz wasnamed president of La Universidadde Aztlan. Classes on Mexican His-tory were held at MAPA Hall onMt. Vernon Avenue. Later, Profes-sor Fernando Peñalosa and otherslent their expertise to refine thecourses that became the genesis ofChicano Studies. Thanks to Díazthe die had been cast and soon Chi-

cano Studies were elevated to col-lege-level undergraduate coursework.Díaz was a community leader,

Words to Think About: Happy Resurrection Sunday

By G. W. Abersold Ph.D.

Afew years ago I wentaround the world. A majorpart of the trip was to dis-

cover the country of Turkey. A his-torical and biblically importantcountry. There are more referencesto Turkey in the Bible than anyother country. Of course with theexception of Palestine. One of its more famous cities is

Nicea; located about 100 milesfrom Istanbul. In the time of Con-stantine it was the place for the firstChurch Council. The Council ofNicea in 325 A.D was held almost300 years after the death/resurrec-tion of Jesus.Among many decisions made was

the time and date of the celebrationof Easter. It applies to today. Easteris always celebrated the first Sun-day following the first full moonfollowing the vernal equinox-thefirst day of Spring. Thus, April 5th, 2015. Without a

doubt, Easter is the most importantday in the Christian calendar. Amuch more important day thanChristmas. The day before last Easter, Stella

and I stopped at the Jack-in-the-Box on Hospitality Lane. A home-less man was there and we begantalking. After wishing him a“Happy Easter,” he politely in-formed me that the correct designa-

tion was “Happy Resurrection Sun-day.”I had forgotten. He was correct.

Incidentally I gave him $5.00 forhis reminder. The story in Luke Chapter 24 is an

excellent insight into the signifi-cance of that resurrection.First of all, the RESURRECTION

makes sense out of our FAITH. Inthe account, the risen Lord con-fronts Cleopas and Jacob on theroad to Emmaus, about 7 milesfrom Jerusalem. He doesn’t discuss the Virgin

Birth, as so many do today in mak-ing it the litmus test for being aChristian. Every Roman Emperorprofessed to be born of a virgin.Neither do they discuss the matterof Biblical inerrancy or the raptureor the Trinity. None of those wordsare even mentioned in the Bible. What did they discuss? The resur-

rection of Jesus. The Apostle Paulput it succinctly; “If Christ be not

risen, then is our faith in vain.” This affirmation turned a group of

wimps into witnesses. The Book ofActs described them as “turning theworld upside down.”John Masefield penned the classic

narrative poem, “The Trial ofJesus.” In it he gives Pilate’s wifethe name of Procula. The centurionis named Longiness.Pilate’s wife had encouraged him

to set Jesus free. He just passed thebuck and washed his hands. On hearing that Jesus is alive,

Procula sends Longiness to find outthe truth. When he returns, herquestion is, “Do you believe it?”His answer is provocative. “I be-lieve He has been set free, whereneither Roman nor Jew can confineHis truth.” Which is our faith.Second, the RESURRECTION

makes sense out of Death. I don’twant to be morbid, but death is notthe end of our existence. One writerhas described death as the

“vestibule to eternity.” PalmSprings is often described as the“waiting room for heaven.”Neither description is as appropri-

ate as what the Apostle Paul said.“O death where is your sting. Ograve where is your victory?”The Psalmist gave a previous in-

sight into death when he said, “Yea,though I walk through the valley ofthe shadow of death, I will fear noevil, for, God is with me.”Eugene O’Neal wrote a religious

play, called “Lazarus Laughed.”The setting is in Athens whereCaligula-wanna be Emperor andlater was-is riding through thestreets. Everyone is bowing exceptLazarus (brother of Mary andMartha and who was raised byJesus.)Caligula threatens him with death.

Lazarus laughs and says, “Caligula, don’t you know that Death IsDead?” So it is. Now and forever.Amen. Selah. So be it.

Exhibit highlights Japanese Americans in internment campsBy MJ Duncan

Four prominent Americanphotographers – AnselAdams, Clem Albers,

Dorothea Lange and Toyo Miy-atake, are showcasing their work atthe California Museum of Photog-raphy at UC Riverside ARTSblockthat documents the life of incarcer-ated Japanese Americans at one of10 relocation camps, Manzanar. After the Japanese Navy attackedPearl Harbor, roughly 120,000Japanese Americans were taken to10 relocation camps for the re-mainder of WWII, one of whichwas Manzanar, located on the east-ern flank of the Sierra Nevadamountain range. The exhibit, “In-terrogating Manzanar: Photogra-phy, Justice, and the JapaneseAmerican Internment,” showcasesthe cultural, physical and psycho-logical conditions of life in thecamp. The exhibit will also feature theinaugural Wong Forum on Art andthe Immigrant Experience onWednesday, May 1, organized byJason Weems, UCR assistant pro-

fessor of art history. The forumwill focus on stereotypes of“Asianness” and “Asian Ameri-canness” in the U.S. during WWII.The exhibition will continuethrough July 18.“The exhibition and forum willdeepen our understanding of hownational image-makers recon-structed the idea of Asianness dur-ing World War II,” Weemsexplained. “How, in the context ofa global war, were American sol-diers trained to differentiate allyfrom enemy on the battlefields ofthe Pacific Theater. How did thoseon the home front reshape theirperception of Asian American cit-izens and immigrants? These weredifficult and pressing issues for theAmerican population at this time.”Photographers Lange and Alberswere hired to document theprocess of removing JapaneseAmericans from their homes tocamps by the U.S. War RelocationAuthority. Landscape photogra-pher Ansel Adams was invited in1943 to Manzanar by its director tophotograph the camp and its land-scape.The forum and exhibition was

born from Weems’ desire to honorthe late Voy Wong and Fay HingLee Wong, Chinese immigrantsand Riverside restaurateurs whosegift to the UCR Department of ArtHistory created an endowmentover a decade ago that now sup-ports the Wong Forum on Art andthe Immigrant Experience.“We hope that people who seethis exhibition take away a morehumanized sense of what it meansto make decisions about the loy-alty and freedom of fellow citizensin times of war and conflict,”Weems said. “Questions of the in-ternment of the enemy combatantsare very much alive in our ownculture today. The camp at Guan-tanamo exists in a long shadow ofplaces like Manzanar. There arelessons to be learned from historyabout who we are and what wevalue.”General admission to UCRARTSblock museums is $3; sen-iors (60+), students with I.D., chil-dren under 12, and members, free.CMP is one of three art institutionscomprising ARTSblock, which islocated in the 3800 block of MainStreet in downtown Riverside.

Art Institute students get rare opportunity to produce full-featuredfilm, selected by Riverside International Film Festival

By MJ Duncan

Students at the Art Instituteof California – Inland Em-pire, experienced a very

rare opportunity to direct, produceand act in a full-length feature film,“Lady Windermere’s Fan,” which

has also been selected by the 13thAnnual Riverside InternationalFilm Festival, April 3-12 at the FoxEntertainment Plaza in downtownRiverside. The project was a col-laboration between AI and Theatri-cal Arts International, which cameabout because TAI producersJoseph Henson and Allen Evenson

both teach film and video produc-tion, acting, directing and othercourses at the San Bernardino-based campus and suggested theproject to give students first-handexperience in filmmaking.“It was a phenomenal experience;the combination of giving first timedirectors a chance to act with pro-fessional actors was a grand exper-iment,” said Henson. “We tookmultiple students at AI to shoottheir first full-length feature film, and there may only be one otherplace in the country that film stu-dents have that opportunity. This(opportunity) is rare, very uncom-mon.”Henson explained that most, ifnot all, film school across the coun-try shoot on 35- millimeter film, which is costly, and therefore onlyshoot short subjects. Redlands Opens their Alley to Graffiti

By Michael Segura

The streets and alleys ofDowntown Redlands livedand breathed art through

different mediums and artists thispast weekend. Sunday, March 29th2015 was the sixth DTR Art Walkwhere spectators and artists gath-ered around to network and enjoythe artistic culture and talent ofRedlands creatives. A communityorganized event, with the help ofyoung entrepreneurs who felt theircity was not having enough eventsto engage their generation and thediverse cultures it contains. Robb Pearson of Augie’s CoffeeHouse is one of many small busi-nesses taking responsibility to or-ganize this Art Walk. This eventnot only helps to stimulate thelocal economy but also unveils themany cultures that exist within thecommunity.“With Redlands trying to grow itscultural expansion, you have busi-nesses such as Augie’s, A LaMinute, A Shop Called Quest, where all young entrepreneurs tryto bring culture into a city that hasculture. We appreciate that butthere’s also Graffiti Culture andComics. It brings that new art formthat maybe people were afraid of acouple years ago and now they arekind of warming up to it and un-derstanding these are not bad kidsthey're artistic and they have tal-ent,” says Ray Duran,Manager at

A Shop Called Quest and Curatorof the art that took place in the 5thStreet Alley. A makeshift wall made of ply-wood is the canvas for the graffitiartists who flocked the alley, jok-ing with one another while takingturns painting. Orange HomeDepot buckets in imperfect sym-metry kept the wall firm whilecans shook. Onlookers mingledwith the artists, concluding thatgraffiti is just another form of ex-pression. “I'm glad painting in publicspaces and events gives me an op-portunity to meet and interact withtotal strangers based off what I'mcreating. I think some of their pre-conceived notions about graffitiget thrown out the window oncethey see the artwork. I think bythen, they're more concerned withthe work being produced then theactual word ‘Graffiti,’” says Be-hvse, one of the participatingartists and a member of JHFCrew. This was the second year aerosolartist were given the opportunity toshowcase their talents.“It was nice to see people appre-ciate the graffiti wall. Graffiti usu-ally gets a bad rep but a goodamount of people stopped to watchthe wall get painted. Lots of posi-tive comments on it too,” saysSplit Felipe, one of the spectatorsand an aspiring photographer him-self. When asked what he expectedfrom the event he replied:

“Art can be so many things, itwas cool to see the different medi-ums of art in one area. Overall itwas a good Sunday afternoon.” The diverse quality and age ofparticipating artists and vendors, such as painters, sculptors, andcrafters at DTR Art Walk create aplace of synergy where no matterwhat your age is you can enjoy thefriendly city of Redlands and walkaway inspired.

In the top of the 10th, Kaiser (5-5, 3-0) senior Erik Escobedo gotthe offense going with a one-outsingle off Steelers lefty TrevorWoodford. Escobedo stole secondbefore Woodward induced agroundout by Erick Ascencion forthe second out. That brought soph-omore Jason Lopez, who alreadyhad two hits in the game, to theplate and he promptly doubled toleft center to bring give the Catstheir first run since the third. Fel-low sophomore Armando Duenasfollowed with a double that scoredLopez, a run that proved to be thedifference. Kaiser reliever Jorge Mon-dragon had been cruising for twoinnings, but junior Joshua Conleyled-off the bottom of the 10th witha single and Asael Flores’ sac-bunt was misplayed putting thetying run on base. Mondragon re-tired the next two batters, but afterintentionally walking Woodford,

who was 3 for 4, to load the bases,he walked designated hitterJoseph Sanchez to make it a one-run game. Everyone here has been so helpful. It’s a miracle I’m here.”Kovack said local residents canhelp donate by visiting a local Mc-Donalds restaurant and purchasinga paper shoe that gets placed onthe wall for a $1, as well as organ-izing fundraisers.“People can be involved by sim-ply doing something within theircommunities,” he said. “They cando a car wash or a bake sale, andalso make personal donations.”For more information, contactMike Kovak at (909) 558-8338.
