COMENIUS PROJECT“Let’s Protect our natural

Areas”

This broshure has been produced by the I.T.I.S. in Marsala as a product of a Comenius Project financed by the EU.

Marsala- Lo StagnoneMarsala is worldwide famous for its wine production but it is also rich of cultural and natural beauties. In its territory there is the natural reserve of the Stagnone lagoon, a protected area, with its islands such as Mothia which gave rise to Lylibeum, the ancient punic town; on its ruins today’s Marsala was founded in the 7th century b.C. Castellammare del Golfo

Segesta with its extraordinary Doric temple and theatre dating to the 3rd century b.C. is a magnificent archeological site. In summer the Greek amphitheatre is animated with important events, and from it one can enjoy a suggestive view over the surrounding valleys. Selinunte takes its name from Selinon, wild parsley. It was founded by colonists from Megara Hyblaea in the seventh century BC. It is another archaeological area very rich of remains in a natural setting

This broshure has been produced by the I.T.I.S. Institute in Marsala as a product of a Comenius

Project financed by the EU.

TRAPANI

FAVIGNANA

The Florio tuna firm is an example of a nineteenth century industrial building, At the time it was built, it was one of the biggest and most beautiful in Europe

Favignana is a beautiful Mediterranean island. It's the largest of the Egadi Islands with Levanzo and Marettimo. The sea is blue and crystal clear whilst the coast is prevalently rocky but its sandy beaches are easy to reach, especially the ones on the south coast. The wonderful seabed surrounding the island, rich in flora and wildlife, as well as in archaeological finds, and the wild coasts make it a small terrestrial paradise safeguarded by the Marine Area, established with a Decree of 1991 by the Italian Ministry of the Environment

MAZARA DEL VALLO

Famous for being one of the leading fishing harbour of Italy and the centre where the Dancing Satyr is hosted.

Its old town centre, flanking the banks of the Mazaro river, has much to see, including a variety of churches, the beautiful Piazza delle Repubblica with its cathedral and Spanish baroque seminary.

Trapani was founded by the Elymians, who used it as an agricultural centre for their hill-top fortress town of Eryx (today’s Erice). It is a good point of departure for the magnificent Egadi Islands. The most exciting time to visit the city is undoubtedly over Easter when lots of people participate in the processions held during Holy Week. Near Trapani, the breathtaking landscapes are composed of saline banks from which wind mills arise. This is one of the most important humid coastal zones, protected by the Trapani and Paceco Saline Natural Reserve which continues till Marsala’s salt pans.
