FEBRUARY 2016/MARCH 2016

February 9, 2016 5:00 p.m. The men of St. Paul will host a Shrove Tuesday dinner with pancakes and sausage. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. It officially marks the end of the season of Epiphany and the beginning of Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. Traditionally viewed as a day of repentance, Shrove Tuesday has become the last day for celebration and feasting before the period of fasting observed during the Lenten season. The name "Shrove Tuesday" is derived from the word "shrive", which means to confess and receive absolution. The name denotes a period of cleansing, wherein a person brings their lusts and appetites under subjection through abstention and self-sacrifice. Everyone is welcome.

PAWS PROGRAM The Paulding Ministerial Association Churches will once again be providing an after school program for 5th grade students at Paulding Elementary School. We need our local churches to partner with us in order to have another successful year of mentoring and loving our elementary students! PAWS program began Wednesday, January 13th from 3-4:30pm. If you are available to come and hang out with 5th graders on Wednesday and want to volunteer, please contact Tera Thompson @ (419)670-3386. If you are able to donate snacks, we will use any/all individually wrapped, peanut butter and nut free snacks. The students LOVE having a healthy snack and feeding their stomach helps us to minister to them. Please drop off snacks to the Paulding Nazarene Church office any time over the next few months.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a good movie, some refreshments, and conversation.

Synopsis: With great jobs, a beautiful daughter and a dream house, the Jordans seem to have it all. Appearances can be deceiving, however, as husband Tony flirts with temptation and wife Elizabeth becomes increasingly bitter, crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. Their lives take an unexpected turn for the better when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, who encourages the couple to find happiness through prayer.

(This movie is rated PG.)

Suggestions for egg filling: candy, Bible verses, pocket change, etc. Easter eggs are in a large BLUE plastic container located in the narthex. Paulding Elementary School Participates in both the Box Tops and Labels for Education programs, which have collectively helped America’s schools raise over $514 million in cash and merchandise. Every year, our students and supporters collect thousands of Box Tops and Labels for Education points, which we can redeem to support the many educational and physical programs at our school. Last year, Paulding Elementary raised about $1750 in cash from Box Tops. This year, we would like to partner with your church to help support our school’s efforts. If you are willing to save the packages from participating products for us, we will recognize your company as a supporter of Paulding Elementary. We can provide a collection container, stop by frequently to pick up packages and clip the Box tops and Labels ourselves. All you need to do is drop the packages in the container. We are also collecting can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. If you would like to partner with us in this great cause, we would appreciate your support. Please contact me to discuss what we can do to follow up on positive and supportive partnership.

Sincerely, Stephanie Tear, Principal Paulding Elementary School

St. Paul Council Highlights Council Highlights St. Paul Lutheran Church December 15, 2015

Kevin Hanenkratt was contacted to winterize the shelter house.

The Stewardship Temple Talks seemed to be well received.

Dan Wilder was elected to serve as president once again in 2016.

Other elections were postponed until the January meeting.

C.W. Harper shared information about the changes Thrivent is making in its organization. These changes to not affect Thrivent Choice Dollars contributions, however, they do affect the matching funds system.

Committee Liaisons were selected

Jay volunteered to take care of the advertising for our Community Free Meals in conjunction with First Presbyterian and Paulding United Methodist.

Newly elected council members (C.W. Harper and Lisa Phlipot) were given orientation information.

We regretfully received the resignation of Mandy Moore who had been elected to council at the December congregational meeting due to personal circumstances.

After some discussion, the council voted to appoint David Burtch to fill the council vacancy for one year.

The January 2016 meeting was changed to January 11 at 6:30 p.m. due to scheduling conflicts.

January 11, 2016

We welcomed Dave Burtch as a council member fulfilling the vacancy for one year.

We received into membership by infant baptism, Reece Michael Bidlack on January 10.

It was noted, with regret, that the office assistant, Tara Miller, had resigned and taken another job. The Mutual Ministry Committee will meet and begin the process of hiring a new office assistant.

It was noted that Kevin Hanenkratt did winterize the shelter house.

The Council thanks Mandy Moore and Renee Boss for their coordination of the Christmas Program on December 20. Well done!

The Worship & Music Committee will meet on January 17 to plan for Lent and Easter.

The remaining officers were elected: Lisa Phlipot – Vice President; Joan Mapes – Secretary; Renee Boss – Treasurer.

Council voted to use Thrivent Choice donations to purchase a microphone for pastor that would make it easier for everyone to hear her. The maximum cost: $300.00

Discussion regarding the distribution of the remaining 2015 Thrivent Choice donations was tabled until the February meeting.

Voted to have a Gideon’s Sunday on February 28 giving people the opportunity to support the work of the organization.

Voted to allow the Paulding Chamber of Commerce to use the field in back of the church for launching the July 9 fireworks display for the community with one caveat: a guarantee that the property would be returned to its original condition.

The annual audit was discussed and tabled until the next meeting.

It was decided to begin having a Sunday movie night once a month for members and the community.
