About SWiG

• Subsea Wireless Group (SWiG)– Oil & Gas industry network (JIP)– Founded May 11

• Why SWiG?– Lack of open standards & interoperability is stifling innovation &

driving up costs

• Objectives– Define and promote open standards to support interoperability in

subsea wireless communications and control– Raise awareness and acceptance of subsea wireless comms & control– Promote best practice and knowledge transfer

• Technologies– Radio,– Acoustic,– Free-space Optics– Inductive power

Standards development

• Radio standard submitted to API 17F for adoption

• Work has started on acoustic standard – Review of NATO acoustic standard (Janus)

– Identification of use cases where acoustic standard would be beneficial

• Riser Monitoring

• Seismic monitoring

• AUVs

• Environmental monitoring

– Discussion around what level of standardisation is beneficial and practical

Education

• Case study database– Currently have 15 approved case studies to

demonstrate examples of wireless within the O&G sector from members

• Wireless 101– 1.5 day course introduction to Subsea Wireless – Includes theory & examples for radio, acoustics, FSO – Practical assessment of comparative technology

capabilities – 3 courses run to date – approximately 75 people

completed

• Other activities – Presentations given to students and conference

delegates in UK, China, and USA.
