MESSENGERS OF LIGHT MUSIC AND LYRICS BY LEONARD BALLANTINE
Light! Let there be light! God spoke the word into the darkness of the night.Light! You are the Light! That shines into the hearts of all.
Once the earth was dark and cold, then the light, then the light.God the spirit moving bold, then the light.Satan tried to spoil the plan, then the light, then the light. But he could not break the Son of Man, then the Light!
Light! Let there be light! God spoke the word into the darkness of the night.Light! You are the Light! That shines into the hearts of all.
The Savior taught in Galilee, to share the light, share the light.Made the lame to walk, the blind to see. Sharing the light.Sent disciples through the land to share the light, share the light. And now we follow His command to share the light!
Light! Let there be light! God spoke the word into the darkness of the night.Light! You are the Light! That shines into the hearts of all.
It’s up to me, it’s up to you. Shine the light, shine the light. To carry on the Gospel News, Shine the light.Keep your lanterns burning bright, Shine the light, shine the light.Pray that souls receive their sight. Shine the light!
Light! Let there be light! God spoke the word into the darkness of the night.Light! You are the Light! That shines into the hearts of all.
Light! Let there be light! God spoke the word into the darkness of the night.Light! You are the Light! That shines into the hearts of all.

OPEN LETTER TO THE WESTERN TERRITORY
June 12, 2016
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
This momentous occasion, the ordination and commissioning of the Messengers of Light session, calls each of us to remember God’s message found in 1 John 1:5-7:
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin (NIV).
Every living thing in our world relies on light for its existence. The God who brought light to the world also brings light to our lives. There is no doubt that we each will be faced with darkness whether it be in our neighborhoods, communities, on social media, or even within our own families. This is where we allow God’s light to permeate every fiber of our being to reflect who He is. Physical light brings an awareness of our surroundings and opens up pathways to be treaded upon with confidence – without fear of the unknown. God is that light in our darkness.
We cannot be a light on our own – shining on our own, or finding ways to get brighter on our own. If this happens, we will eventually burn out completely. Just like a light bulb that must be connected to an energy source, we need to stay connected to God so that we may go forth and fill the dark places with His light. God is our main source of power. We need to remain connected to Him!
As proclaiming Christians, God is THE light in our lives. He brings an awareness of who we are as we live each day in fellowship with Him. If we are truly walking in the light, everything about who we are should reflect who HE is in our lives: our conversation, our behavior, and our thoughts. Let us all be messengers of light for His glory!
Blessings to you!
In His Service,
Major Bob and Captain Joanne LouangamathTerritorial Candidates’ & Recruitment Secretaries

I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; you know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you. AMBER OHLGrants Pass, CASCADEIf I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.(1 Corinthians 13:1-3a MSG)

30 | COMMISSIONING 2016
AFFIRMATION OF FAITHTHE CADETS:In the name of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that:
WE BELIEVEThat the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
That there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.
That there are three persons in the Godhead – the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence, and co-equal in power and glory.
That in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.
That our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
That the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
That repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
That we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
That continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
That it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgement at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?
THE CADETS: We do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY: Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Savior, and for His sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable, and befriend those who have no friends?
THE CADETS: We do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity, and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?
THE CADETS: We do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your commissioning and ordination.

SONGSCOVENANT SERVICE
“My life must be Christ’s broken bread” My life must be Christ’s broken bread,My love His outpoured wine,A cup o’erfilled, a table spreadBeneath His name and sign,That other souls, refreshed and fed,May share His life through mine.
My all is in the Master’s handsFor Him to bless and break;Beyond the brook His winepress standsAnd thence my way I take,Resolved the whole of love’s demandsTo give, for His dear sake.
Lord, let me share that grace of ThineWherewith Thou didst sustainThe burden of the fruitful vine,The gift of buried grain.Who dies with Thee, O Word divine,Shall rise and live again.
“All there is of me, Lord” All there is of me, Lord,All there is of me,Time and talents, day by day,All I bring to Thee; All there is of me, Lord,All there is of me,On Thine altar here I layAll there is of me.
“All that I am” All that I am, all I can be,All that I have, all that is me,Accept and use, Lord, as You would choose, Lord,Right now, today.Take ev’ry passion, ev’ry skill,Take all my dreams and bend them to Your will.My all I give, Lord, for You I’ll live, Lord,Come what may.
Often I come with my problems and cares,Running to You when distressed; But I must bring You the whole of my life,Lord, I must give You my best.
Life has no purpose unless it is Yours,Life without You has no goal; All that fulfills me is doing Your will,Knowing that You’re in control.
“And is it so? A gift from me”
And is it so? A gift from meDost Thou, dear Lord, request? Then speak Thy will, whate’er it be:Obeying, I am blest.
I have not much to give Thee, Lord,For that great love which made Thee mine:I have not much to give Thee, Lord,But all I have is Thine.
And dost Thou ask a gift from me:The talents I possess?Such as I have I give to TheeThat others I may bless.
And dost Thou ask a gift from me:The gift of passing time?My hours I’ll give, not grudgingly,I feel by right they’re Thine.
And dost Thou ask a gift from me:A loving, faithful heart?‘Tis Thine, for Thou on CalvaryFor me with all didst part.
COMMENCEMENT SERVICE
“O for a thousand tongues to sing”
O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer’s praise; The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of his grace!
My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of thy name.
MESSENGERS OF LIGHT | 41
Jesus! the name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease; ‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears; ‘Tis life and health and peace.
He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood avails for me.
“I’ll stand for Christ, for Christ alone”
In the Army of Jesus we’ve taken our standTo fight ‘gainst the forces of sin,To the rescue we go, Satan’s power to o’erthrow,And his captives to Jesus we’ll win.
I’ll stand for Christ, for Christ aloneAmid the tempest and the storm.Where Jesus leads I’ll follow on;I’ll stand, I’ll stand for Christ alone.
We go forth not to fight ‘Gainst the sinner, but sin;The lost and the outcast we love; And the claims of our king we Before them will bringAs we urge them His mercy to prove.
Jesus pitied our case, And He died for our race,To save a lost world He was slain; But He rose and now lives, And His pardon He givesUnto all who will call on His name.
Though our trials be great And God’s enemies strong,To battle undaunted we go,For our warfare’s the Lord’s And to Him we belong,In His strength we shall conquer the foe.
SILVER STAR BANQUET
“God’s love to me is wonderful”
God’s love to me is wonderful,That He should deign to hearThe faintest whisper of my heart,Wipe from mine eyes the tear; And though I cannot comprehendSuch love, so great, so deep,In His strong hands my soul I trust,He will not fail to keep.
God’s love is wonderful,God’s love is wonderful,Wonderful that He should give His Son to die for me;God’s love is wonderful!
God’s love to me is wonderful! My very steps are planned; When mists of doubt encompass me,I hold my Father’s hand. His love has banished every fear,In freedom I rejoice,And with my quickened ears I hearThe music of His voice.
God’s love to me is wonderful! He lights the darkest way;I now enjoy His fellowship,‘Twill last through endless day.My Father doth not ask that IGreat gifts on Him bestow,But only that I love Him too,And serve Him here below.

“Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee”
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,God of glory, Lord of love;Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,Hail Thee as the sun above.Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,Drive the clouds of doubt away;Giver of immortal gladness,Fill us with the light of day.
All Thy works with joy surround Thee,Earth and Heaven reflect Thy rays,Stars and angels sing around Thee,Center of unbroken praise;Field and forest, vale and mountain,Blossoming meadow, flashing sea,Chanting bird and flowing fountainCall us to rejoice in Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving,Ever blessing, ever blest,Wellspring of the joy of living,Ocean depth of happy rest.Thou the Father, Christ our brother,All who live in love are Thine;Teach us how to love each other,Lift us to the joy divine.
Mortals, join the mighty chorusWhich the morning stars began;Father-love is reigning o’er us,Brother-love binds man to man.Ever singing, march we onward,Victors in the midst of strife;Joyful music lifts us sunwardIn the triumph song of life.
COMMISSIONING & ORDINATION
“In Christ alone my hope is found”
In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground,Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace,When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all,Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied, For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay, Light of the World by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victorySin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine,Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of Hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me Home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!
“All there is of me, Lord”
All there is of me, Lord,All there is of me,Time and talents, day by day,All I bring to thee; All there is of me, Lord,All there is of me,On thine altar here I layAll there is of me
“And can it be that I should gain”
And can it be that I should gainAn interest in the Savior’s blood?Died He for me who caused His pain,For me who Him to death pursued?Amazing love! how can it beThat Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
He left His Father’s throne above,So free, so infinite His grace,Emptied Himself of all but loveAnd bled for Adam’s helpless race.‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,For, O my God, it found out me.
MESSENGERS OF LIGHT | 43
Long my imprisoned spirit layFast bound in sin and nature’s night;Thine eye diffused a quickening ray;I woke; the dungeon flamed with light. My chains fell off, my heart was free,I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
No condemnation now I dread;Jesus, and all in Him, is mine.Alive in Him, my living Head,And clothed in righteousness divine,Bold I approach the eternal throneAnd claim the crown, through Christ, my own.
“Benediction”
The Lord bless thee and keep thee,The Lord make his face to shine upon thee,And be gracious unto thee; The Lord lift up his countenance upon theeAnd give thee, and give thee, and give thee peace. Amen.

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!Let angels prostrate fall;Bring forth the royal diademAnd crown Him Lord of all!

Crown Him, ye martyrs of our GodWho from His altar call;Extol the power of Jesus’ bloodAnd crown Him Lord of all!
O that with yonder sacred throngWe at His feet may fall,Join in the everlasting songAnd crown Him Lord of all!
“We’re an Army fighting for a glorious king”
We’re an Army fighting for a glorious king;We will make the world with hallelujahs ring; With victorious voices we will ever sing:There’s salvation for the world.
For the world, for the world, Jesus died, Jesus died,For the world, for the world, There is room in Jesus’ side. All the world to save, to battle we will go,And we ever will our colors boldly show,With a trumpet voice We’ll let the millions knowThere’s salvation for the world.

DEDICATED TO PRESERVING AND MAINTAINING THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE WESTERN TERRITORY
The Salvation Army Museum of the West reopened in April 2016 after nearly 11 months of
renovation. The new museum contains two redesigned galleries showcasing photographs
and objects spanning 150 years of Salvation Army history. The remarkable contributions
of the Booth family are explored alongside the unique and memorable contributions of
Western Territory pioneer officers. In addition to the redesigned space, the Museum of the
West has also recently surpassed the 10,000 item mark in their online collection. Museum
staff have cataloged and digitized a wide variety of historical objects, photographs, and
artifacts and made them available at http://sawest.pastperfect-online.com. This resource
provides open access to our unique collection for officers, researchers, and others who
