Report from the Executive DirectorBOARD OF DIRECTORS

this so cook ....I am happy to learn this ....wow..... thank you ....blah blah blah.........yay !

Summer is here. The Pittsburgh Penguins are the NHL’s best, the Cleveland Cavaliers are NBA champions, Major League Baseball is in full swing, and Community Living Chatham-Kent’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament is a memory.

The Parkfield Restaurant hosted the 61st Annual General Meeting on June 21. Aaron Formosa, Leaders Within graduate, and Lisa Fisher, Options Program teacher, were guest speakers and each provided an excellent talk.

I extend a thank you to Dorothy Cook, Linda Goldsmith, and Dr. Derek Jane for their years of service as members of the

Board of Directors. Community Living Chatham-Kent is better because of you.

CLC-K welcomes Michelle Rice, Gerry Bossy, and Bruce Cockburn to the Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, a Family Committee was established. The committee is comprised of people who possess expertise in various areas, and it has three specific roles relevant to the transition of the Day Program; provide insights, feedback, and ideas. To date, meetings have occurred on March 8, May 3, and June 8.

May was Community Living Month. Eleven people attended Community Living Day at the Legislature, sixty persons were at the Community Living Day with the Jays, and several people hosted neighbourhood barbecues at their homes.

A new feature titled People of the Month commenced this year. Monthly, a person who receives support and a staff are recognized for their talents and contributions both internally and externally.

CLC-K purchased five rain barrels from the Rotary Club of Chatham Sunrise. The rain barrels will be placed at homes, people will learn about water conservation, and the collected water will be used for gardens.

I welcome Bailey Baggio, Kristen Bloom, Zachary Horvath, Tiffany Lovell, Anastasia Maslak, and Holly Stokes. These fine young people are working at this agency during the summer.

Dorothy Cook received the Joan Olive Risdon Memorial Award of Distinction; Ely Finley and Shawn Rivait, and Melissa Walker were the winners of the Rob McLandress Make a Dream Come True Fund; and, Dean and Barb’s No Frills received the Joyce M. Carr Champion Award. Congratulations everyone!

On behalf of Community Living Chatham-Kent, have a terrific and safe summer.

Ron Coristine, Executive Director

“DAY WITH THE JAYS” May 28

DAY AT THE LEGISLATURE on May 12, 2016

Rick Nicholls, MPP, was a very courteous host. The group was able to enjoy a tour with Mr. Nicholls of his office and the building. Mr. Nicholls acquired passes for everyone to the gallery. He then received everyone and announced everyone’s names as his guests to the gallery.

The day was enjoyed by everyone.

Stephen Stokley, Manager of JOBWORX Employment Services, presented the Joyce M. Carr Champion Award to Dean and Barb Mills, owners of Dean and Barb’s No Frills on Queen Street. Dean and Barb have been strong advocates for hiring people who have an intellectual disability. For years, they have supported JOBWORX-Employment Services, the OPTIONS program and local high schools with Co-Op opportunities.

Dean and Barb currently have three people working for them supported by JOBWORX Employment Services. Thank you for continuing to be a strong community partner.

Thank you to the riders/fundraisers and to everyone who made a pledge.

Congratulations to Derek, and Joe for being the top fundraisers on their respective bikes and to Jackie, and Kevin for their efforts.

THANK YOU to Trish Allen, and Grace Negri-Stirling for all of their work as team captains.

Our Goal—That all people live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the community and have the opportunity to participate effectively.

Our Vision —Community Living ... Discovering Dreams, Connecting Lives

Mission—Community Living Chatham-Kent provides support and services for people who have an intellectual disability.

Rob McLandress Make a Dream Come True FundThe fund was made possible through a bequest to Community Living Chatham-Kent by the late Father James Williams. Father Williams was an ongoing supporter of the work of Community Living Chatham-Kent and his bequest was made in honour of Rob McLandress, whose family he was very close to.

Two awards of $1000 each are given annually to two people who have an intellectual disability in order to help them fulfill a dream. Nine applications were received by the Review Committee and after very difficult deliberations, the Committee decided on the winners.

Melissa WalkerMelissa’s dream is to be able to enjoy the smiles on her children’s faces as she plans an exciting adventure to Niagara Falls this summer. Melissa has worked hard to provide for her children and would like to take them on a family vacation to Niagara Falls Skyline Hotel and Water Park. This vacation will make memories that last a lifetime!

Elynore Finley & Shawn RivaitEly and Shawn’s dream is to take their son Ethen on a trip to the African Lion Safari and Ripley’s Aquarium before their new bundle of joy arrives in August! Together, they have saved and worked hard to attain their family goals. The Rob McLandress Make A Dream Come True fund will help to further make a dream reality for them, and provide their son his dream of seeing animals up close! The trip will provide them time together as a family to make special memories!

Congratulations!

Discovering Dreams, DEREK

I fundraise and volunteer to help the community.

I love socializing and meeting new people through my grass cutting business with my Dad.

Community Living keeps me connected through different activities.

I feel great joy helping and being part of this community.

ROBYNMy community is the same as everyone else’s. I enjoy swimming at the YMCA, performances at schools, or the Cultural Centre, and walking around my neighbourhood. On my Mom’s birthday, I loved taking Mom and Dad out for supper to Wendy’s to celebrate.

I like this community because everyone is so friendly and always greets

me with a smile.

MICHAELIt is important to help and respect one another. I enjoy helping and socializing with others. I love going for walks with my dogs and greeting people as we pass them.

I love being a part of Chatham because it has great history and I love learning about it!

What does COMMUNITY

mean to you?DONALDI like to participate in activities all over the community. For example, I like going to the mall, going to the YMCA and local hockey games. My favourite NHL hockey team is Montreal.

I enjoy taking the city bus to the exercise equipment at Kingston Park.

Chatham has so many fun things to do!

DESI GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

For a number of years Desi has donated his time and talent to creating extra fluffy rugs for the cats in the OSPCA. He has always had a soft spot for animals, especially cats, donating approximately 1 rug per month. Desi took it upon himself to volunteer his talents and is very proud of his accomplishments. The wool and canvases are all donated and he is always eager to start a new rug when one is complete.

Desi works diligently every day and takes great pleasure in the final product. He makes sure to use a variety of colours and enjoys creating his own patterns. Desi is so proud that he can give back to his community through something he is passionate about.

Connecting LivesPEOPLE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Aktion Club of Chatham-Kent wants to recognize Rob Ralston for all of his hard work, dedication, and friendship that he has given the club since he has been involved. Pictured to the right, is Kevin Sinclair and Rob heading out to do some volunteer work. Each year, Rob pairs up with an Aktion Club member and they go out for a quick supper and then work the Kettles for the Salvation Army in the downtown mall. This is only one of many events that Rob has participated in with the Aktion Club. Rob is a huge advocate on the Club’s behalf.

The Golden K’s invite the Aktion Club to their Christmas party each year which is the highlight of the year! The club can always count on Rob for a ride to the meetings and events.

We want to thank Rob and look forward to a bigger and better club each year!!!

Cuba - March 31- April 7, 2016

The Business Girls group, started in 2008 with a group of women who work in competitive employment as a way to network and socialize. They meet regularly to enjoy various social activities. The most recent adventure included a trip to Cuba. The Business Girls initiated and planned a trip to Memories Varadero Beach Resort.

The resort itself was beautiful with well-manicured grounds, complete with many tropical blossoms. The lobby was one of the favorite places to meet, sit, and have a beverage while listening to great piano music.

The ladies took a double-decker bus into the town of Varadero twice. There they were able to enjoy visiting the markets, a small mall where they could watch a man rolling cigars by hand, and stopping at a nearby nature reserve to explore cavernous caves complete with stalagmites, hieroglyphics, and many bats. Some ladies also traveled by horse and carriage, or a train back to the resort.

All the ladies saw some amazing shows, swam in the beautiful topaz waters, and languished on white sandy beaches. They also enjoyed a barbeque on the beach, and spent time by the many pools, daily.

Three of the women participated in a Swim with the Dolphins excursion. They had an excellent captain and crew who took them by boat to spend time with some beautiful mammals.

Most of all, it was a great cultural experience as the women readily conversed with the Cuban people, picking up Spanish words as the week progressed. They sampled different kinds of foods, and noted differences in the environment such as traffic, bartering, creatures, and plant life. The people they met were awesome, and the Business Girls came home with a new respect for how wonderful it is to live here in Ontario, Canada.

Joan Olive Risdon Memorial Award of Distinctionis presented each year to a person in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the Goals, Vision, and Beliefs of Community Living Chatham-Kent. The 2016 award was presented to Dorothy Cook.

The Joan Risdon Memorial Award History - The handcrafted needlepoint star that represents this award, graced the walls of Joan Risdon’s home for over 30 years. This treasured artwork was inspired, created, and given to Joan by her sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Harry Goodwin. The time, care, and love that went into the creation of this was always treasured by Joan and is symbolic of the commitment and closeness of the family.

LORI’S TRIP TO TORONTOOn March 6, 2016 Lori had the opportunity to go to The Princess of Wales Theater to see the Broadway production of a childhood favorite, Beauty and the Beast. The evening began with a fantastic dinner at the Italian restaurant "Forget About It", just a five minute walk to the theatre in lovely downtown Toronto, where Lori enjoyed having two different desserts. Once at the theatre Lori was ushered upstairs to see the play. For two and one-half hours, Lori was avidly entertained with the familiar songs from childhood and lots of smiles were observed.

After the show Lori made a few small purchases of play memorabilia. Once at home, Lori was assisted to create a shadow box as a reminder of the evening.

Lori is currently planning another overnight trip to the Niagara area in June 2016.

MAKE A DREAM HAPPEN EVERY MONTH!

Join the Dream Makers Monthly Giving Program and your regular monthly financial commitment to Community Living Chatham-Kent will enchance the lives of the people we support all year long.

A gift of $10 a month for example, works out to only $2.30 per week but accumulates to $120 in a year ... and while you may not be able to donate $120 at one time, spreading it out over 12 months makes it easier to make an impact right now. Increase your monthly gift to $20 or $50 and the impact grows.

Monthly donors will receive an OFFICIAL income tax receipt annually. Please know that you can change or cancel your donation amount at any time.
