Lashon Hara, lamed hay, you belong in pre-1A.This was the first cheer each of my daughterslearned in preschool. (For the less informed,
Lamed Hay are the initials for the Hebrew phrase for gos-sip, Lashon Hara. Pre-1A was what kindergarten has beencalled in Jewish schools--it's a long story as to why.) Withthis simple chant, gossip is established as something onlya kindergartner would do.
In regard to Lashon Hara, my girls have taught me a lotfrom what they have learned. Of course, you need to re-frain from speaking ill of others. But my daughters taughtme, after learning from their teachers, that Lashon Haragoes much further. You should generally refrain fromspeaking about others, good or bad. What seems like apositive comment to some, actually may lead to embar-rassment or other negative feelings, especially for thosewho show the humility that we admire so much. Com-bating Lashon Hara has to be a universal goal as speakinggossip about others has been likened to murder as youmay destroy a person's reputation and standing.
When you consider the increased level of education ofthe American population with an increase not only in col-lege degrees, but an increase in professional and graduatestudies as well, you would think that the American popu-
lation would act in a more informed, educated way. In-stead, we have developed a technology where we get gos-sip on an entirely “higher” level. We can destroy rabbis, presidential candidates, and others in one Facebook orblog posting or social network tweet. We don’t require ac-cusers to be named. We don’t require evidence. The latest“evidence” simply refers to the unfounded previous re-ports. Millions of people can “hear” Lashon Hara with-out minutes, sometimes within seconds. All oureducation, all of our technology seems to be driving ourcivilization deep into the gutter. It does seem that we haveembarked on a capability for “high tech lynchings.”
For those who think I’m referring to the gossip sur-rounding presidential politics, I’m thinking first of allabout the total destruction of Michael Jackson in a trialdesigned to seek justice for his death. Now, you may allhave negative opinions of Jackson from the accusationsin previous court cases, forgetting that he was found in-nocent of the various charges. But no matter how youfeel about Jackson, prior to this trial you could picture thisgreat entertainer “moonwalking.” You could rememberthe energy of his performances. You could remember thebeauty of some songs, the power and beat of others. Nomatter what you felt personally about his character,

Michael Jackson was rightfully hailed as one of the greatestentertainers of all time.
Yet, in this trial, we heard the drunken/stoned, pitifulvoice of Jackson on a phone message machine. We sawthe pictures of the “pharmacy” of drugs on his bedstand. We heard testimony regarding his out of control addic-tions. While prosecuting Dr. Murray may have had a pur-pose, the gossip that was perpetuated along with thedestruction of the memory of Michael Jackson was justnot worth it. The Lashon Hara within the trial was out ofcontrol. The reputation of Michael Jackson died as surelyin this trial as the life of Michael Jackson passed on twoyears earlier. This was a tragedy on top of a tragedy.
Anyone who shops in a supermarket has seen the mag-azine covers with pictures of Kim Kardashian, a womanwhose very existence is based on gossip. Sorry for quotingfrom the gossip, but supposedly she sold rights to her wed-ding for a total of $10,000,000, including the televising ofthe wedding and the publishing of the wedding pictures. Her wedding to the basketball star lasted all of 72 days. This “storybook” wedding and marriage had no substance. It was a relationship founded on gossip. The casualty ofthe 72-day fiasco: The sanctity of marriage. The Message:Marriage is something for sale. There are no dreams ful-filled. That is the message now thrust on the generationof our children. Substance does not matter, only style.Gossip is catapulted to what is important in this upsideworld. How did this happen? What is next? The two-daymarriage?
A “highly educated” young man in his mid-twenties cameto me during the 2008 election and asked me in all serious-ness, “Did you hear how Sarah Palin’s child is really thechild of her middle daughter?” Here was a man with anadvanced professional degree and a couple years of actualwork experience. And yet, he accepted as truth gossipwhich was on its surface unbelievable. How did we get tothis point where a vice presidential candidate for a majorparty could have such rumors perpetuated without any sys-tem of checks? How did we get to the point where a per-son can be “slimed” without any truth or any liability forthose spreading these rumors?
And for those who think I may only advocate for Repub-licans, what about the years of gossip regarding PresidentObama’s place of birth? In the end, it does not even mat-ter where he was born as there are provisions for childrenof American citizens to become citizens when born whilethe American parent is out of the country. You may recallthat George Romney, Mitt Romney’s father, was an Amer-

ican citizen despite his parents being on a Mormon mis-sion in another country when he was born. He was eli-gible to run for President despite being born in Mexico.Senator McCain was an American citizen even thoughhe was born in the Panama Canal Zone when his fatherwas stationed there in the Navy. Gossip about PresidentObama is no better than gossip about Sarah Palin. Gos-sip destroys. There are many reasons to either supportor oppose the President. His birth certificate and thegossip generated by discussion about it did not help ournation in any way. Governor Palin in the end could notsurvive the gossip. Her reputation was shattered. Again, there are many reasons to either support Governor Palinor to oppose her. Gossip should not figure into the cal-culation.
I have learned much from my daughters. Throughthem, I have come to realize the broad impact of all as-pects of Lashon Hara.
I have questioned in this column in previous articlesthe very high cost of tuition to send a child to a Yeshivaof Jewish day school. While I do think there are waysto bring down the cost, I must say that the value of theMidot (values) my daughters have been taught has aworth far greater than the cost of the tuition paid.
Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch explained the con-cept of being “The Chosen People” as meaning that wehave been chosen as a people to go out into the worldto teach Torah values. There is no better way to accom-plish this task than to teach the Jewish mandates againstLashon Hara to the larger public.
It is time to speak up as Torah-observant Jews for ahigher level of public discussion and debate. It is timeto time to demand more of our news media and moreof politicians. It is time to say no to the magazines atthe checkout stand. It is time to stop watching themeaningless weddings. It is time to look for the true he-roes in our world and to forget those who are all styleand no substance.
We can expect more from the world, and often morefrom ourselves.
A return to our true values will help nullify the terribleimpact of a world seemingly lost in negative gossip. Wecan help to restore a better world.•

Avraham [Abraham] sent his servant Eliezer on quite adifficult mission. Find a shidduch [match] for not only theworld’s most eligible bachelor, but for its most spiritual.Yitzchak [Issac] was designated by Hashem to be offeredas a sacrifice. He never left the land that would one daybecome Israel. And he was raised by the founders of Ju-daism, Avraham and Sarah.
It isn’t easy to find a match for such a special individual.Avraham made Eliezer promise that he would not bringback a Cannanite woman for his son. Instead, Eliezer wasto search among Avraham’s family in Charan and find asuitable maiden for the sacrosanct young man.
Laden with gifts, Eliezer left for Charan. As a selectioncriteria he devised a sure-fire approach. "Avraham," hethought, "is the epitome of kindness and hospitality.Surely Avraham would want those qualities prevalent inhis daughter-in-law." He prayed to Hashem to guide him."When I arrive in Charan, I will ask a maiden for water. The maiden," he thought, "who replies by saying, ‘drink, and I shall even give your camels to drink, [and drawing
water for camels who had just completed a long desertjourney is no simple task]’ must be the one who is desig-nated for Yitzchak." (Genesis 24:13-14)
The exact scenario that had been prayed for actually oc-curred. As Eliezer stood by the well in Charan, Rivka[Rebbeca] walked toward it. The posuk (verse) tells us thatas soon as Eliezer watched Rivka begin to draw water, heraced toward her and asked her the pre-determined ques-tions. The gracious response led to our destiny.
The Medrash questions why Eliezer raced forward togreet Rivka. It answers that as Rivka went to draw water,Eliezer saw a miraculous event. As she lowered her bucket, the waters in the well rose to greet her. Therefore Eliezerran to greet this maiden, as this was a spiritual individualwho must truly be Yitzchak’s bashert (pre-ordained).
Yet, if such a miraculous event occurred, why didEliezer continue with his pre-planned act? Why did he askRivka for water and wait until she responded by offeringdrinks to both him and his entourage? Also, when Eliezer

discusses the entire scenario with Rivka’s family andtells them why he decided upon Rivka, he repeats thestory of Rivka’s grace and hospitality. Yet Eliezer failsto mention of the miraculous incident of the rising wa-ters.
In the Slobodka Yeshiva, nothing was as importantas the study of Torah. Students who excelled in theirdiligence and ability were viewed in awe. But the great-est reverence was saved for the founder of the Yeshiva,Rabbi Nosson Zvi Finkel, the Alter [Sage] of Slobodka(1849-1927). With his brilliance, humility and greatcharacter, he set the tone of the entire Yeshiva.
One day two students were discussing a new youngman, Isaac Sher, who had just entered the Yeshiva."Isaac is a true ilui (prodigy)," said one. "He knows theentire Shas (Talmud) and Shulchan Aruch (Code ofJewish Law), by heart."
After the other boy listened as the first extolled theintellectual virtues of Isaac Sher he added meekly, "Ihad a conversation with him the other day. He is trulya geshmahkeh mentch (man of character and charm)."
"Geshmahkeh mentch?" questioned the first studentin a scoffing tone. "Is that all you can say about him?We are talking about the greatest mind ever to step footin this Yeshiva and all you can say that he is a decentand kind fellow? I see you don’t appreciate a person’strue value."
With that the disgusted student began to walk away, but the towering presence of the Alter of Slobodkablocked his path.
"No," he said firmly as he motioned to the humiliatedstudent. "That young man is correct. Reb Isaac’s great-est quality is that he is a geshmahkeh mentch."
The Alter eventually took Reb Isaac Sher as his son-in-law.
Eliezer was emotionally impressed by the miraculousrising waters; however, he composed himself. Miracleswere not the criteria needed to become Yitzchak’s wife.He knew that character transcends any miracle or ge-nius. In finding the wife of a patriarch and mother ofa nation he did not look for Rivka the miracle worker. He looked, and found, the geshmahkeh mentch.

I was born into a Jewish American family. My father’sfamily was three generation American. I was especiallyproud to be a fourth-generation American Jew. As a childI played a great game of baseball, read Sunday funnies andcelebrated American holidays.
My mother’s family was the complete opposite. Theycame from Europe with no appreciation for baseball orany American pastimes.
As a child I went to a small cheder, a Jewish school. My classmates were children of refugees.
One year I was introduced to a very strict, no-nonsenseJewish teacher - called a rebbe. This rebbe had very littlepatience for me, as I was very different from his Europeanstudents. I was an American - a Yankee boy.
According to my rebbe, all American customs weretaboo. They were considered “traif,” non-kosher. Easter,Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July were alljumbled into one big no-no.
He claimed that a Bible law forbids the Jewish nationto emulate the ways of other nations. He would quotethe biblical verse Leviticus 18:3: “Neither shall ye walk intheir statutes; do not follow their social customs.”
However, not all Jews think that way, as we shall see.
A week before Thanksgiving my father called my Eu-ropean grandparents and invited them to an 18 poundturkey dinner. On Thursday we would have a Thanksgiv-ing repast.
The Monday before Thanksgiving the rebbe made aspeech. “Thanksgiving is forbidden. It is a pagan holiday. No Jewish boy is allowed to eat turkey.”
I thought that if I ate turkey my teeth would fall out. Itold my rebbe about the early Indians and the firstThanksgiving. I thought he would realize that Thanksgiv-ing could be considered a mitzvah - good deed for bothJews and Gentiles. I told him about friendly Indians; howthey saved the starving Puritans; that the Thanksgivingmeal reminds us of the foods the Indians gave the settlersto survive through the rough winters in the new world. It’s a mitzvah to share and give thanks to G-d.
“Yingele (sonny boy), I told you we don’t celebrate theseholidays. It is forbidden to even listen to your bubbe-meises (tall tales).”
That night I told my dad that I wouldn’t participate ina pagan holiday. “It’s against the Bible,” I said. He flewinto a rage.
CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING THE JEWISH WAY
23 N o v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 1 • 323-965-1544 • [email protected]
“You are an American, a fourth generation American. Beproud that you have a country that believes in G-d. Thanks-giving is a Jewish idea.” He told my mother that if this con-tinues he will take me out of that cheder, the Jewish school.
For the next few years my father bought a large turkey forThanksgiving and we had two turkey meals: one on theAmerican Thanksgiving and one on the following Shabbos. We now celebrated Thanksgiving on the Jewish holy day ofSabbath.
My dad had a point. Thanksgiving, indeed, was a holidaythat fit into the Jewish idea of thanking G-d for His good-ness. We could have Thanksgiving every Sabbath.
I don’t remember if Thanksgiving became a kosher holi-day or not, but having two turkeys solved our familydilemma.
On Oct. 3, 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the originalThanksgiving Proclamation. In it he stated, “We have beenthe recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we havebeen preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; wehave grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nationhas ever grown.
“But we have forgotten G-d. We have forgotten the gra-cious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied andenriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined,in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessingswere produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of ourown. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have becometoo self–sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming andpreserving grace, too proud to pray to the G-d that made us.
“It has seemed to me fit and proper that G-d should besolemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as withone heart and one voice, by the whole American people. Ido, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of theUnited States, and also those who are at sea and those whoare sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe thelast Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving andpraise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heav-ens.”
I think if my Rebbe would have seen this wonderfulproclamation, then he might have joined us in prayer at theThanksgiving meal.

This week the Torah tells us of thegreat dichotomy of character be-tween Yaakov and his older brotherEsav. Yaakov sat and studied whileEsav hunted. Though it is difficult tounderstand the roots of this great di-vide, their parents' reaction to this di-versity is even more confusing. TheTorah tells us that "Yitzchak lovedEsav for there was game in hismouth, and Rivka loved Yaakov."(Genesis 25:28)
The variance in their opinions man-ifested itself in the fight over theblessings. Yitzchak intended thatEsav receive his blessings for worldlygoods, intending to save the spiritualones for Yaakov. Rivka pushed herson Yaakov to attain the blessings forthe worldly goods, too.
What was the fundamental differ-ence between Yitzchak's and Rivka'sview of their children? Why was
there such a diverse notion as to whoshould inherit the wealth of thisworld? How is it possible thatYitzchak, who epitomized the veryessence of spirituality, favored Esav,a man steeped in worldly desires?
Vice President Al Gore tells a storyabout outgoing Senator Bill Bradley.Senator Bradley once attended a din-ner at which he was a guest speaker. The waiter set down a side dish ofpotatoes, and placed a pat of butterupon them. The Senator asked for anextra portion of butter.
"I’m sorry sir," the very unyieldingserver replied tersely, "one pat perguest."
With a combined expression ofshock, scorn, and disbelief, SenatorBradley looked up at the formal stew-ard. "Excuse me," he said. "Do youknow who I am? I am New Jersey

Senator Bill Bradley." The Senator cleared his throat. "Iam a Rhodes scholar and a former NBA star. I currentlyserve on the International Trade and Long-Term GrowthCommittee, and the Debt and Deficit Reduction Commit-tee, and I am in charge of Taxation and IRS Oversight. And I’d like another pat of butter on my potatoes."
The waiter looked down at the Senator.
"Do you know who I am?" he asked.
"I am the one in charge of the butter."
Yitzchok understood the great contrariety between hischildren. However, he felt that Esav, the hunter-child, un-derstood the mundane world much better. So it was onlyfitting that Esav be gifted with the blessings of a mundaneworld. Esav would then supplement Yaakov’s needs, anda true symbiosis would emerge. Rivka, on the other hand, was pragmatic. She felt that putting Esav in charge of thematerial world would lead to selfish hoarding that wouldhardly give Yaakov a portion.
She understood that while Yaakov’s sustenance was ba-sically from spirituality, he still needed a little butter to sur-vive. And she could not rely on Esav controlling thebutter: she knew the personality all too well. There wouldbe no parity or sharing. Esav would take it all.
Everybody has a job, whether it be spiritual or menial, and each job must be executed with a sense of responsi-bility and mission. The argument between Rivka andYitzchak was complex, but it was simple too. Esav maybe more astute in churning the butter; however, will hemake sure to give Yaakov his fair share? Rivka knew thatthe world would be a better place if we all shared our re-spective portions. But she wouldn't count on it.

Why are so many marriages failures? And why do so manyfail so soon after the wedding?
This week we read about the first shidduch in history. Abra-ham sends his trusted servant, Eliezer, to find a wife for hisson Isaac. He returns with Rebecca and they live happilyever after. The verse tells us "And [Isaac] took Rebecca, shebecame his wife, and he loved her." So, it would appear thatin the Biblical scenario, true love comes after marriage, notbefore. Before a marriage can take place there has to be acommonality between two people, shared values, mutual as-pirations and, yes, certainly adegree of chemistry betweenthem. But true love has to benurtured over time.
Without doubt, a primarycause of many marital break-downs today is the unrealisticexpectations that peoplehave going into marriage. Our generation has been feda constant diet of romanticnovels, hit parade love songs, glossy magazine advice andHollywood fiction -- all ofwhich bear little resemblanceto the real world. (Dare Isuggest that Shrek is the in-dustry's first realistic love story?)
"We fell in love!" "It was love at first sight." I confess tobeing a bit of a romantic myself, but surely "love at firstsight" has got to be a contradiction in terms. 'Love' by def-inition takes years to develop. If you are honest with your-self, the only thing you can feel at first sight is lust. "Loveat first sight" is a monumental bobba meise.
So we "fall in love" thinking it's real, hoping it will be trueand lasting, and then at the slightest disappointment we fallright out of love. Which only proves that it wasn't true lovein the first place. True love takes years, true love is the ma-ture conviction that our lives are intertwined and insepara-ble no matter what -- even if my partner goes grey or flabbyor loses his money. That kind of love is measured not inromantics but in long-term commitment.
When I officiate at a wedding ceremony I make a point ofobserving not only the bride and groom but also their par-
ents. A single glance that passes between father and motherunder that chupah -- radiating nachas and feelings of sharedsatisfaction -- tells me that they have had a good marriage. That, to me, is more telling then the mushy swooning ofthe newlyweds. As exciting as it is, their love may still be inthe infatuation stage. Yet untested, it's still early days.
So the first rule is patience. Love takes time. It needs nur-turing. Sadly, too many give up too soon.
Secondly, the Hollywood effect leaves us so naively impres-sionable that, at first, we convinceourselves that our partner mustbe the proverbial Prince Charm-ing or Princess Grace. But then,at the first sign of imperfection,"Hey, I bought a lemon! I'm outtahere!" Remember, nobody is per-fect. Not even you, my dear. Inthe passage of time we do indeeddiscover the little imperfectionsof our chosen partners. Somethings can be unlearned, withgentle encouragement and, again, patience. Others, we may justhave to learn to live with. Accept-ance is an art. Weigh up in yourmind the relative significance ofminor inadequacies against the
greater good in the grand scheme of things. You may verywell realize that you can actually live with those small, pettyirritants. Admittedly, if it's something major then you mayneed to go for some serious counseling.
And in making these calculations consider the following:Do I stop loving myself just because I am imperfect? Do Istop loving my children because the teacher told me theywere really bad at school? Of course not. Why then do Ihave difficulty loving my spouse because of a perceivedfault?
Marriage is the beginning, not the end. If we can be realisticabout our relationships we can find true love. But it takestime, patience, and the wisdom to overlook the little thingsthat can annoy us. Then, please G-d, with true commitmentwill come true love, togetherness, a lifetime of sharing andcaring and the greatest, most enduring contentment in ourpersonal lives. Amen.

There was one moment in particular during the Confer-ence of European Rabbis that captured the awe of Jewishdestiny: the mincha prayers at Nozyk Synagogue.
A momentous event took place last week: the largestgathering of rabbis in Warsaw since World War II.
The Conference of European Rabbis convened in thishistoric city, bringing together, among others, the chiefrabbis of Israel, France and the Ukraine, Rome andMoscow, Austria and Poland; and dayanim (judges) fromthe Batei Din (rabbinical courts) of London, Paris, Stras-bourg, Lyon and Amsterdam. The conference generouslyinvited me from faraway South Africa to deliver a speechand participate in the discussions.
There was one moment in particular during the confer-ence that captured the awe and miracle of Jewish destiny:the mincha prayers in the Nozyk Synagogue, the only syn-agogue not destroyed by Germans, because they hadturned it into a stable. As we began mincha, I lookedaround the synagogue. Seeing 200 rabbis, representing al-most two million Jews in communities across Europe, thewords from the Book of Psalms came to mind: “Somecome with chariots and some with horses but we call outin the name of Hashem our G-d. They are brought totheir knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.”
Who would have thought, at the height of Nazi power, when Jews were being murdered in gas chambers andwhen the Nozyk Synagogue was desecrated, that one day
rabbis representing Jewish communities throughout Eu-rope would return with strength and confidence to thisvery synagogue? Who would have thought that in Ger-many, of all places, a yeshiva to train a new cadre of youngGerman rabbis would be established? The Third Reichbrought horrific destruction; but in the end, it lost the waragainst the Jews. In defiance of any normal laws of historyand human nature, through the awesome miracles ofG-d, the Jewish people have survived.
These are indeed days of “miracle and wonder.” Some250 years ago, long before these modern miracles, RavYaakov Emdin wrote that the miracles performed byG-d to ensure the survival of the Jewish people through-out the many years of exile are even greater than the awe-inspiring miracles of the Exodus from Egypt – the tenplagues, the splitting of the sea, the manna falling fromheaven and the Clouds of Glory. Jewish destiny defies thenormal laws of history.
By any logical and rational assessment, we should notexist as a separate, identifiable people after almost 2,000years of exile, dispersion and persecution. But Gd’s planfor us rises above the limitations of the physical world.
At the heart of His plan is His Torah.
The miracle of the rebirth of Jewish sovereignty in theland of Israel, which we have been privileged to witnessin our time, is a remarkable endorsement of the prescientwords of Rav Yaakov Emdin.

Torah is flourishing once more, with the great yeshivasof Europe re-established in Israel, America and all overthe world; Ponivezh, Mir and Gur are alive and thrivingonce again.
Before the conference started, my son and I went to seeone of the last remaining walls of the Warsaw Ghetto. Aswe entered, a group of Israeli soldiers left.
On their lapels was proudly emblazoned the MagenDavid, now the emblem of the sovereign Jewish state. Itstruck me how decades ago, when Jews wore the Star ofDavid on their clothing, it was a badge of dishonor, sym-bolizing their certain death. It has now become a badgeof life, strength and pride.
Yet this kind of miraculous rebirth can be intoxicating. It is easy to forget that even now, when we have brave, strong soldiers who can defend the Jewish people, ourdestiny is in Hashem’s hands.
We learn this lesson from King David, one of our great-est military and political leaders, who bravely led and de-fended the Jewish State. King David was known not onlyfor his political power and military genius but also as agreat spiritual leader, learned in Torah and imbued withdeep devotion to G-d, whose faith and connection toHashem he expressed so eloquently in his Book ofPsalms, which contains the verse quoted above.
According to Rashi, these words were composed byKing David as a prayer for his soldiers going out to battleunder the command of his general, Yoav. Rashi quotesthe Gemara (Sanhedrin 49a) which states that the militaryvictory of Yoav and his troops was in the merit of KingDavid’s prayers. Rashi interprets the verse “some comewith chariots and some with horses” to mean that some
of the nations of the world place their trust in chariotsand horses but we rely on Hashem because ultimately allsalvation and victory comes from Him. Our Sages teachus that we are not allowed to rely on miracles. Thus, inorder to defend Jewish life and the Jewish state, it has beennecessary for us to create a powerful army. But KingDavid reminds us that the success of our modern-daychariots and horses – the tanks, fighter jets and missile de-fense systems – is completely in G-d’s hands.
King David also reminds us of our destiny.
He of all people knew the great necessity of a strongarmy, but he also knew that we cannot be defined by it.
We are defined by our moral vision, which G-d gave tous at Mount Sinai. It is through this Divine mission anddestiny that G-d grants us the power to rise above the nor-mal laws of history. The future of the Jewish people – andindeed of any society – does not depend on chariots andhorses alone. Throughout history, many civilizations andempires with mighty armies have come and gone; yet theJewish people have remained throughout.
Chariots and horses are of this earthly world and there-fore transient; our Torah and our Divine destiny are eter-nal. Physical things, no matter how powerful, eventually, like the human body, turn to dust, whereas G-d, His Torahand spiritual world are immortal. In the end, those whobelieve in their chariots and horses “are brought to theirknees and fall.”
But we, who believe in G-d, His Torah, and our eternaldestiny, “rise up and stand firm.”

3/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
salt to taste
1 (12 pound) whole turkey
Preheat oven to 325 degrees .
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, garlic, rosemary, basil, Italian
seasoning, black pepper and salt. Set aside.
Wash the turkey inside and out; pat dry. Remove any large
fat deposits. Loosen the skin from the breast. This is done
by slowly working your fingers between the breast and the
skin. Work it loose to the end of the drumstick, being careful
not to tear the skin.
Using your hand, spread a generous amount of the rosemary
mixture under the breast skin and down the thigh and leg.
Rub the remainder of the rosemary mixture over the outside
of the breast. Use toothpicks to seal skin over any exposed
breast meat.
Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan. Add about 1/4
inch of water to the bottom of the pan. Roast in the pre-
heated oven 3 to 4 hours, or until the internal temperature
of the bird reaches 180 degrees.
