CMIA Workshop Sacramento, California – April 3-6, 2011 The 2011 Annual CMIA Workshop was a great success! Each year the CMIA Board works hard to find not only great destinations, but great volunteer members to host future workshops. This year was no exception. John Bowman, General Manager of Serrano El Dorado Owners’ Association in El Dorado Hills, CA, and co-host Ed Vitrano, General Manager of Trilogy at Rio Vista in Rio Vista, CA, joined forces to once again provide a great workshop for CMIA Large Scale Managers. The following comments were received from attendees: Here’s a huge shout out and thank you to John Bowman and his team for hosting a very informative and fun work- shop. Thanks also go to Ed Vitrano (co-host), Nick Arther, Kevin Hubred and Greg Vorster and their teams for all the hard work they put into this event. There was excellent diversity in the communities we visited and a wide range of educational sessions. I have to give Ed another thank you for acting as co-tour guide/historian. Between Ed, our hired guide (can’t recall his name) and Pooch (sommelier), our bus rides and of course, wine tasting were a blast. Of course, we can’t forget our very unique lunch at Fosters, plus the fun evening events. You set some high standards this time.” Bob Mariani, MCM ® , AMS ® , CMCA ® , PCAM ® General Manager of Sun City Vistoso Community Association, Oro Valley, California. I would like to echo Bob’s comments…the CMIA Workshop was very well organized and provided a lot of useful information. The tours were fun and the food and drink were outstanding. As always, the networking opportunities were valuable to me. Thank you John, Ed and the rest of the managers and their staffs that put all the hard work into the event and opened up their com- munities to us.” Joe Powell, CCAM ® General Manager, Pine Mountain Lake Association, Groveland, California Rancho Murieta Welcome to CMIA Workshop 2011

CMIA Workshop, continued...

“I would like to express my special thanks to John Bowman and his staff for the exceptional CMIA Workshop they hosted earlier this week in Sacramento, CA; as well as my thanks to the co-hosts, Ed Vitrano, Greg Vorster, Nick Arther, and their staff. Their communities are all are beautiful, each with their own unique qualities. It doesn’t matter whether you have been in community management for 3 years or 30 years, there were definitely things to learn and take back to your own community each day. The last morning “roundtable” was particularly infor-mative and all of the social events were most enjoyable. For me, this Large Scale Community Association Managers’ Workshop ranks up there as one of the very best of all those that I have attended in the past 28 years. Again, my sincerest appreciation to the 2011 CMIA Workshop hosts for a very memorable experience.”

The attainment of the Master Community Manager (MCM®) designation administered through Community Managers International Association (CMIA) demonstrates experience, education and com-mitment as an on-site Large Scale Association Manager. The MCM® designation signifies a level of professionalism in the Large Scale Community Management industry achieved by a select group of men and women who have dedicated themselves to a level of excellence.

At this time, forty five (45) industry leaders have achieved the prestigious designation, which must be displayed proudly as a testament to the accomplishment. The MCM® requirements and qualifications involve three specific areas: education, experience and workshop attendance. There is also a maintenance requirement which CMIA has made both affordable and easy to achieve. Recently there were changes made to these requirements. The Board believes these minor changes will enhance our successful program and will allow qualified candidates to achieve the designation and all current holders to maintain it.

These changes are:•RestricttheeducationcomponenttoattainmentofaPCAM®, CPM® or CCM® and eliminate the few college degree

programs that were previously accepted.•Theworkshopattendancerequirementwasmodifiedtorequirethatoneofthetwoworkshopsattendedmusthavebeen

a CMIA workshop. The workshop host provision was also removed.•TheMCM® maintenance requirement was also modified to require attendance at one CMIA workshop every three years.

In the past it was acceptable to attend one non- CMIA workshop every two years or to present an acceptable equivalent educational activity. Both have been eliminated.

The CMIA Designation Committee will be charged with monitoring these new requirements to maintain the high standards of the designation. This information is directed to all MCM® members so that they may plan for their maintenance schedule in future years, as well as to all active members of CMIA who may wish to attain the CMIA MCM® designation. An application is available on our website, www.CMIAmanager.org, and we encourage you to begin the process toward this level of professionalism in our industry. As CMIA grows and responds to our ever-changing industry, our membership looks forward to providing leadership and sharing information necessary to keep large-scale association management at the highest level possible. I thank our membership for their contributions toward this goal, and look forward to another great year!
