Community Newsletter 2 – June 2018 Rozelle substation upgrade Project update As you may know, Ausgrid is planning to upgrade its existing substation located on Manning Street, Rozelle. Earlier this year Ausgrid introduced the project to the local community. This involved consulting with residents on two preliminary concepts for a new building proposed to be constructed on the substation site. The community was also invited to attend an information session to learn more about the proposal and meet with the project team. At this session Ausgrid sought feedback on the two concept designs and conducted an online poll to identify a preferred option. We thank all those who attended the information session and provided feedback. Your interest and input has been a valuable part of the planning process. A summary of the engagement with the community, the feedback received and a FAQ document can be found on the project page on our website. Website details can be found on the last page of this newsletter. Preferred building design Based on the feedback, building design Option B has proven to be the more popular. The concept drawing presented to the community is shown at the top of this page. Ausgrid and its architectural consultant will now use the feedback to create a detailed design. Planning for approval and delivery of the project will also proceed. Two design concepts were presented to the community. Option A was a contemporary style using light weight cladding materials and dark green colouring. Option B was intended to reflect the materials found in buildings in the local area and featured brick cladding in light brown colours. As shown in the figure above, Option B was the concept preferred by the majority of those who responded to our survey. The main reasons for this choice included: The brick materials and proposed colour scheme would help to soften the current look of the substation. The design blended well with the built structures in the local area. Both building design concepts can be seen on the website. Option B. chosen design concept for new building Poll results and community feedback Option B Option A

Project assessment and approvalUnder the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Ausgrid is the determining authority for this project. As part of this process, an environmental assessment (known as a Review of Environmental Factors or REF) will be prepared. The REF investigates the potential environmental impacts associated with the construction, operation and maintenance of the proposed substation.

Your questions

The following are some of the most commonly asked questions from the information session. A full FAQ document can be found on the web site.

Why does the substation need an upgrade?

The substation needs an upgrade to create new connection points for our existing and future major customers.

Are both the building designs the same apart from the outer design?

Yes, the size and structure of buildings are the same.

Will this affect the electricity supply in my home?

During the upgrade of the substation, the electricity supply to your home will not be impacted. In the unlikely event that we will need to interrupt your electricity temporarily during construction, you will be notified in advance.

How will the local area be impacted during construction?

Construction work will be contained within our substation site, so it is expected that the local community will experience little construction impacts.

The most noticeable impact would be an increase in vehicle and truck movements in local streets, such as Toelle and Manning Street. Residents in close proximity to the substation on Manning Street and users of King George Park may also notice some noise, dust and vibration coming from the substation site during construction. However this will be managed to avoid impacts on neighbouring properties.

All affected residents will be updated as project progresses of any impacts they may experience and will be notified prior to construction.

Transformer removal and minor early works Prior to construction work starting, Ausgrid needs to remove one of the existing transformers from the substation. During this removal there will be some parking and traffic impacts on Toelle and Manning Street. There will also be some minor works carried out inside the substation yard as part of the site preparation. This will be fairly quiet and low impact. This work is planned for early 2019, we will notify you again before this work commences.

Next stepsAusgrid will now continue working on the detailed design and planning for the project. The next stages of this project involves preparing an REF, removal of the old transformer, and early works. REF display and early works are expected to take place in early 2019. Once the project gains approval, construction will start in mid-2019. We will keep you updated as the project progresses.
