THE PGA OF AMERICA is pleased to return to Kiawah Island Golf Resort to host the 2012 PGA Championship. The Ocean Course, one of the great golf courses in the world, also served as the venue for the 2007 Senior PGA Championship. This week it will test the best golfers in the world, who have gathered here in pursuit of the Wanamaker Trophy in The Season’s Final Major… Glory’s Last Shot.

Each year, The PGA of America, through our Community Relations program, strives to assist the needs of the local communities where we play our spectator championships. This year, the PGA Championship Community Relations program focused on two primary opportunities to support the communities in the greater Charleston area: The Links to Success initiative and the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build.

The pages that follow are designed to provide an overview of how a community of volunteers came together to produce lasting beneficial results. The PGA of America is proud to be a part of these efforts as we continue to use the great game of golf to enrich lives throughout the country.

LINKS TO SUCCESS

Many children born into poverty enter kindergarten 18 months behind their peers developmentally. Without intensive supports, these children never catch up and are 300% more likely to drop out of school than other students. High school drop-outs cost South Carolina hundreds of millions of dollars annually in lost tax revenue, increased Medicaid expenses and incarceration costs.

Determined to change this landscape, Trident United Way, The PGA of America, and Kiawah Island Golf Resort, host of the 2012 PGA Championship, came together to create the Links to Success initiative in 2007.

The PGA of America and Trident United Way “Linked Up”

to Help Children Succeed in School and Life.

Recognizing that no one intervention would be able to effect real and systemic change in isolation, Links to Success:

• Coordinates, delivers and evaluates behavioral, academic and family supports in our most at-risk and underperforming schools

• Invests in the important targeted, evidence-based and outcome-driven services needed by each school

• Coordinates action among all community partners committed to improving education in our region

The great news is that within just two years of adopting the Links to Success initiative, participating schools have consistently improved their absolute rating by at least one level.

We’re also excited to be part of a solution that has resulted in our tri-county graduation rates improving significantly in five short years—from 64.5% in 2007 to 73.7% in 2011 (Source: South Carolina Department of Education District Report Cards).

At Trident United Way, we are committed to achieving measurable success. Links to Success will define much of our work in the coming years. We look forward to working with The PGA, its membership and all who join us in this worthy endeavor.

Trident United Way and its Links to Success partners are proud to share their most recent 2010-2011 outcomes:

• 87% of participating students improved their reading test scores

• 83% improved their math test scores

• 91% improved their behavior

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The PGA of America and Kiawah Island Golf Resort, in support of affordable housing, partnered with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to build a home prior to the 2012 PGA Championship.

Sea Island Habitat for Humanity is the third-oldest Habitat affiliate in the world. Their mission is to provide affordable housing for low-income working families from James Island to Edisto Island, S.C. Their Partner Families are low-income working families in our community that are required to make a down-payment,

contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” and pay for their home through a 30-year, zero-interest mortgage. These families come from all walks of life and through Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, will become first-time homeowners.

Established in 1978, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity has built more than 275 homes, serving more than 1,200 children and adults, and now builds to EarthCraft and LEED home-energy standards.

As part of the 2012 PGA Championship at The Ocean Course, The PGA of America and Kiawah Island Golf Resort partnered with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity to build an entire house (from start to finish!), June 23 – July 7, 2012. Some 200 volunteers provided more than 425 shifts. The majority of the volunteers were Kiawah Island Golf Resort employees and general volunteers for the PGA Championship. The homeowner is also an employee of Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

PGA BLITZ BUILD The PGA of America and Kiawah Island Golf Resort solicited the 200-plus volunteers, provided specific tee shirts for all volunteers

and made a $50,000 financial contribution to help fund the build. A special breakfast will be held during the PGA Championship to show appreciation

to all volunteers and Sea Island Habitat for Humanity staff.

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF GOLF IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Today, there are approximately 360 golf courses around the state in settings that vary from ocean views and marshes on the coast to mountain vistas in the upstate. In 2007, golf courses and the off-course expenditures of visiting golfers had a total economic impact (direct, indirect and induced) in South Carolina of including $2.7 billion in output or sales, 33,535 jobs, $834 million in personal income, and $276 million in federal, state and local taxes. Green fees and club membership dues generated $12.9 million in admissions tax revenue alone, accounting for over 39% of state admissions tax collections.

Leading forecasters at the College of Charleston's Office of Tourism Analysis say the impact of the 94th PGA Championship is $92 million that will come from the direct visitor spending. The economic impact from the influx of visitors on local businesses will produce $26 million in labor income and support 832 jobs, according to the analysis.

LEVY RESTAURANTS CONCESSIONS FOR CHARITY PROGRAMLevy Restaurants, the leader in sports and entertainment dining concessions and food and beverage partner of The PGA of America, is proud to support the PGA Championship Community Relations Program through its Levy Cares Initiative. Nationwide Levy Cares, the charitable arm of Levy Restaurants, supports it neighbors through causes and organizations dedicated to children, those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and the hungry and homeless by providing food, hospitality services, volunteer time and financial contributions. This year Levy Restaurants has made a commitment to support the local community through its Concession for Charity Program. The Charleston Playmakers, South Carolina United Mt. Pleasant, Young Elite Entrepreneurs, Inc., Donation Utilizations, Master’s Commission Foundation, Camp Lejeune Navy Ball Committee, Shield Ministries, Charleston Fire Breathers/Spokes Group of Charleston and Marissa E. Lloyd Sunshine Fund will provide concession volunteers each day. In return, these charities will receive 10 percent of the gross sales from the concession stands to help support their causes.

GET GOLF READY FAMILY FUN ZONE TOUR

New for the 94th PGA Championship, The PGA of America will be launching the Get Golf Ready Family Fun Zone Tour. While everyone cannot make it the Kiawah Island Golf Resort for the PGA Championship, the Get Golf Ready Family Fun Zone is a great way for The PGA of America to bring golf into the Charleston community and get more people playing and enjoying the game of golf. This initiative is right in line with the PGA's new strategic plan, showcasing how fun, easy and affordable playing golf can be.

The Get Golf Ready Family Fun Zone Tour is a FREE golf festival being conducted at Charleston area parks during the week of the PGA Championship. A team of PGA Professionals will lead this experience, providing instruction and other fun activities.

In planning this initiative, The PGA collaborated with the City of Charleston Parks & Recreation Departments, Charleston Municipal Golf Course, The First Tee of Greater Charleston and the Carolinas Section PGA. The Get Golf Ready Family Fun Zone events schedule is below:

YOUTH AND ADULT OBESITYThere are several programs throughout the Charleston area and the State of South Carolina designed to address the high overweight and obesity rate for adults (about ½ the adult population) and children (31.7% of high school children). According to the 2010 Center for Disease Control and Prevention Surveillance System Report, South Carolina ranked 4th highest in the nation for overweight and obesity.

The PGA is committed to contributing to a healthy lifestyle for America’s youth. During the PGA Championship children and parents were introduced to the PGA Sports Academy, a youth clinic for juniors. All attendees will receive a roadmap that incorporate physical fitness with an emphasis on hydration, striking, throwing, kicking, balance, balanced nutritional plan, lower and upper body strength and jumping. In addition attendees were given a pedometer provided by PGA Partner United Healthcare to help encourage a healthy life style. The PGA Sports Academy also incorporates the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) and the First Lady’s initiative against childhood obesity, “Let’s Move!” Curbing obesity is a journey and playing the game of golf can help reduce obesity.

PGA SPORTS ACADEMY YOUTH CLINICThe PGA Sports Academy Youth Clinic, powered by United HealthCare will be conducted at the City of Charleston Golf Course Sunday August 5, 2012 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Some 150 youths from various organizations throughout the Charleston area will attend and receive golf instruction from some 20 Carolinas Section PGA Professionals. The youth will be treated to a cookout following the clinic.
