Priorities for 2018-2019

School priorities from the past school year: Enhance inclusive teaching practices in the classroom. Improve reading comprehension and writing skills across all grade levels. Focus on thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving strategies to improve student learning in Math.

Enhance Inclusive Teaching Practices in the Classroom

Classroom teachers will focus on academic inclusion, curricular adaptations, classroom environment and design, and ensuring that our special needs students are active participants in the classroom.

Improve Student Reading Comprehension and Writing Proficiency We will focus on moving the number of students who are below grade level to at or above grade level and maintaining that growth through all three terms. The exploration of the new ELA Curriculum Framework will be a priority specifically in the area of effective literacy teaching practices. Teachers will continue to develop their skill set in implementing and understanding the Optimal Learning Model when teaching making the big ideas, learning goals, outcomes, and criteria for success clear.

Focus on Flexible Thinking, Algebraic Reasoning, and Problem-Solving

Strategies to Improve Student Learning in Mathematics We will focus on moving the number of students who are below grade level to at or above grade level and maintaining that growth through all three terms. Teachers will focus on improving student learning in the areas of Application of Knowledge and Modeling and Communicating Mathematical thinking. Emphasis will be placed on students solving problems that are rich in content in the areas of mathematical knowledge, mental math, flexible thinking, and algebraic reasoning.

Focus on Assessment, Data, and Evidence of Student Learning and Engagement Teachers will focus on increasing student engagement by infusing effective curricular planning strategies through innovative practices such as Thinking Classrooms, STEM based learning, and The Spirals of Inquiry. Students will be supported through a gradual release of responsibility process to demonstrate their understanding of what are they learning, why they are learning it, and how to assess their growth.
