THE ATHANASIAN CREED (RCA version excerpt – Please stand)

We worship one God in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, * neither confusing the Persons nor dividing the divine Being. For the Father is one Person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is still another. * But the deity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is One, equal in glory, coeternal

in majesty. What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit. * Uncreated is the Father; uncreated is the Son; uncreated is the Holy Spirit. The Father is infinite; the Son is infinite; the Holy Spirit is infinite. * Eternal is the Father; eternal is the Son; eternal is the Holy Spirit: And yet there are not three eternal beings, but One who is eternal; * as there are not three uncreated and infinite beings, but One who is uncreated and

infinite. The Father is Almighty, the Son is Almighty, the Holy Spirit is Almighty * And yet there are not three almighty beings, but one Almighty. Thus the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Spirit is God: * And yet there are not three gods, but one God. Thus the Father is Lord; the Son is Lord; the Holy Spirit is Lord: * And yet there are not three lords, but one Lord. As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct Person as God and Lord, * so true catholic religion forbids us to say that there are three gods or three lords. The Father was neither made nor created, nor begotten; * the Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the Father; the Holy Spirit was neither made nor created, but is proceeding from the Father and the Son. *

Thus there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; * one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits. And in this Trinity, no one is before or after, greater or less than the other; * but all three Persons are in themselves, coeternal and coequal; So that in all things, as has been said, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be

worshipped.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Reader Let us boldly approach the throne of grace through Christ our Lord. For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For Foley, our Archbishop, and Grant, our interim Bishop, for New Life Anglican in Petoskey, and for all the clergy and people of our diocese and congregation, that we may hear your word and become who You call us to be,

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For our nation: Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought together out of many nations and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your will, we may show forth your praise to the world. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in these days of trouble, let us not doubt your goodness and love.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For supernatural unity: O God, take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord: that as there is but one Body and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, so may we all be of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace and love.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity—especially those affected by COVID-19,

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

For those serving on the “front lines” in the current pandemic, including many in our parish and extended families; for their protection, for the safe-guarding of all at high risk, and for us all, that You would be our Almighty Fortress and Strong Defense, Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer. For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray.

Reader Lord, in your mercy: People Hear our prayer.

You are invited to add your own prayers at this time. Celebrant: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SIN (The people sit or kneel if able) Celebrant Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to Him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COMFORTABLE WORDS Celebrant The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

1 Timothy 1:15

THE ATHANASIAN CREED (BCP Version – ACNA 2019)

Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith. Which Faith except everyone do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the Catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one, the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, and the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son, incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal. As also there are not three incomprehensibles, nor three uncreated, but one uncreated, and one incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is Almighty, the Son Almighty, and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords, but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by Himself To be both God and Lord, So are we forbidden by the Catholic Religion, to say, There be three Gods, or three Lords. The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son, neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.

Page 18: Companion Bulletin TRINITY SUNDAY€¦ · 6 THE ATHANASIAN CREED (RCA version excerpt – Please stand) We worship one God in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, * neither confusing

18

And in this Trinity none is afore, or after other; none is greater, or less than another; But the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal. So that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity in Trinity and Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped. He therefore that will be saved must thus think of the Trinity. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the Substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds, and Man, of the Substance of his Mother, born in the world; Perfect God and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting; Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead; and inferior to the Father, as touching his Manhood. Who, although He be God and Man, yet He is not two, but one Christ; One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by taking of the Manhood into God; One altogether; not by confusion of Substance, but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and Man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, He sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies and shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil into everlasting fire. This is the Catholic Faith, which except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.
