Chapter 1

Introduction

Filipinos are characterized by their passion for music and culture. They listen to any genre of music like

POP, Classical, Rock, etc. In fact, music is part of their culture as well as their everyday life. They had proven that

music is part of their soul by creating a new music genre, the Original Pilipino Music, better known as OPM.

According to www.wikipedia.com, OPM, or Original Pilipino Music originally referred only to Philippine

pop songs, especially those in the ballad form, such as songs popularized in the 1970s through the present by

major commercial Philippine pop music artists like Pilita Corrales, Nora Aunor, VST & Co., Ryan Cayabyab, Basil

Valdez, Eraserheads, Freddie Aguilar, Rey Valera, José Mari Chan and APO Hiking Society. In present time, OPM

refers to any form of music that is made in the Philippines by the Filipino people.

Taken from the website, http://www.music-philippines.com/history-of-philippine-music/, OPM is

originated in the Philippines way back mid-1970 by compositors who became nationalistic and patriotic. The

consciousness of the Filipino people in political and national issue makes music industry in the country more

stable. It was on EDSA revolution that OPM music became so popular that they even use their music against the

government.

Statement of Problem (s)

Significance of the Study

OPM reflects the art and culture of the Filipino people. It also became a part of their everyday living.

Researchers want to explore different facts about the old generation of OPM (Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok

Ko by Noel Cabangon, Anak by Freddie Aguilar, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika by Ryan Cayabyab and Batang Bata Ka

Pa by Apo Hiking Society) and the new generation of OPM (Hawak Kamay by Yeng Constantino, Narda by

Kamikazee, Picha Pie by Parokya ni Edgar and Wag na Wag mong Sasabihin by Kitchie Nadal) in the preference of

PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Technology freshmen Students.

All in formations gathered within this study are open for further use.

Literature Review

The research conducted within this study found out that there are few notions governing OPM. Although

some of it talks about the generation of OPM in the Philippines, this study was the first to centralize the idea of the

old generation of OPM (Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko by Noel Cabangon, Anak by Freddie Aguilar, Kay Ganda ng

Ating Musika by Ryan Cayabyab and Batang Bata Ka Pa by Apo Hiking Society) and the new generation of OPM

(Hawak Kamay by Yeng Constantino, Narda by Kamikazee, Picha Pie by Parokya ni Edgar and Wag na Wag mong

Sasabihin by Kitchie Nadal) in the preference of PUP-CCMIT, BSCS and BSIT freshmen students.

The following studies about OPM music in the Philippines was became the inspiration and source of facts

in this comparative study:

International Studies

Laughey explained in his book, Music and Youth Culture (2006), that Music is considered by many to be

the highest form of arts and culture. Music is also considered by many to be epitomizing their value and taste, as

well as those of other people. Music is very often a product of its time – both the reflection of the “here and now”

and a “recaller” of memories. Meantime, Music and Youth are usually deemed to hold a special relationship with

each other. Music is delivered and sold to youth audiences, and young people on the whole are fans of one music

genre or another.

Pen discussed Music in his book, Introduction to Music (1992), as a sound ordered in time – or, from

another perspective, time measured by sound. Music originates with a sound source – a composer or performer

who organizes and creates the sound using some form of instruments. Music is a language, a form of

communication. It can elicit emotional response and provoke thoughts, but it cannot signify concrete things or

ideas in a manner of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Music is an abstract language whose meaning is dependent

upon the relationship between the creator and the listener. Walker said in his Music education: cultural values,

Page 6: Comparative Final

Page 6

social changes and innovation (2007), which the term “popular” in the field of music is about condescending by the

majority of people in particular kind of music. In this designation, we can say that the ninth symphony of

Beethoven was “Pop Music”. But, only few will agree with it as in the period of pop culture today. For the reason

that the “Popular Music” in today’s culture was signify that a music earned a lot, produced more copies of CD, and

was sung by Pop idol.

According to Woods in his book The Philippines: A Global Studies Handbook (2006), 1970’s when music of

Philippines became Filipino-centered. It was started and begins in native music; eventually its lyric became

appropriate for the Filipino. In 1980’s, different compositors begin to promote their field in Music Industry like

Ryan Cayabyab and Freddie Aguilar. The song “Anak” by Freddie Aguilar concerning a child or offspring that was

lost in the righteous way of life and forgotten his parents, was became famous in Asia.

The note of Bloom in his book Lonely Planet Philippines (2009), the development of Music Industry in the

Philippines was a prodigy made in different culture of Filipino citizens. Original Pilipino Music also known as OPM is

surrounding a wide genre of music like rock, folk, and new-aged genre, it also including the combination of three.

Folk music was become popular in Philippines. The song “Anak” by Freddie Aguilar is about the relationship of child

in his parents, which serves as a way for Freddie to become famous during the People Power Revolution in 1980’s.

Around the end of 19th century, the ‘Kundiman’ that portray a harsh and engaging theme about love, destiny and

death was still popular in the Filipino.

Related Studies

Navarro discussed in Ang Bagong Lipunan, 1972-1986: Isang Panimulang Pag-aaral sa Musika at Lipunan

(2008) that music as a constructor of culture has a profound influence in the awareness of public. Even the former

period of our history, the Spaniard, American, and Japanese that conquered the Philippines has also believed in the

great and horrific effects of music in people. In more recent period, it may be used to escape the emotions of

people in Music Therapy. It is an expression in acclaiming in terms of march and nationalist songs of Nation who

Page 7: Comparative Final

claim their independence against the conqueror. In simple sense, music serves as an instrument for self

expression, maybe collective or individual.

Lzra (2009) said that the Philippines were composed of different groups and languages presenting

Tagalog, Visaya, Ilonggo, Kapampangan, and so on. The difference between each other was known by their music,

OPM for Tagalog and Bisrock for Visaya. The OPM was popularized by Tagalogs residing in Manila. It became

popular for the reason that it was famous in the capital of the country. The singers and composers of OPM are the

key for the development of Music Industry in Philippines. In addition, although OPM was a global term for the

songs that was made inside the Philippines, some of these that was made by cultural group does not belong to

OPM. The “Bisrock” is one of the popular genres of music except in OPM. Most constituent of genre of Philippine’

music was composed of different music genre and compositor; it only shows the flexibility of Filipino in the field of

Music.

In the statement of Garcia (2010) in Manila Bulletin, Ogie Alcasid, present President of Organisasyon ng

Pilipinong Mang-aawit, said that “other culture gives importance in our music, the OPM. There’s a time when

Filipino become interested in Samba, in Brazilian. But we should not end composing music. The Filipino writers

have sufficient comprehension in creation to persist the inscription of their feelings… Education can help a lot

because it promotes Filipino music for the youth… Our music is great”.

Legaspi stated in http://www.pinaybroad.com/2010/11/pinoy-music-comfort-zone-2 (2010), that the

OPM for OFWs is a way to relieve their loneliness while they are far from the mother land and while taking their

exploration in the foreign language. By means of listening to the songs of Aiza Siguerra, Paolo Santos, Lito Camo at

Sarah Geronimo, they feel that they are still in the Philippines. According to Lagaspi, OFW selects to listen with old

OPMs because they are outgrown with these and will never fade.

Translated by Rodell (2002) from his book Culture and Customs of the Philippines, the present Philippine

music was alive and still rising. The original music is still patronized and remains in the interest of the singers and

listeners. The Philippine Recording industry reported 60% of most popular songs from the local singers, which was

Page 8: Comparative Final

Page 8

opposed on the former statement ten years ago. APO Hiking Society is one of the most numbers of OPM songs, in

fact they are almost 30 years in the Music industry and in 1998; the Juan dela Cruz band was unite in a

presentation for their supporters.

Theoretical Framework

This study was based on the theory that as the time goes on, there’s always a diversity of great that took

the attention of many in terms of listening to it. The study focuses on the comparative analysis in the preference of

PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Technology freshmen students with

regards to the old generation of OPM (Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko by Noel Cabangon, Anak by Freddie Aguilar,

Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika by Ryan Cayabyab and Batang Bata Ka Pa by Apo Hiking Society) and the new

generation of OPM(Hawak Kamay by Yeng Constantino, Narda by Kamikazee, Picha Pie by Parokya ni Edgar and

Wag na Wag mong Sasabihin by Kitchie Nadal).

Methodology

Overview

This research was conducted in order to compare and analyze OPM music in the preference of PUP-CCMIT

BSCS and BSIT freshmen students with regards to the old generation of OPM (Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko by

Noel Cabangon, Anak by Freddie Aguilar, Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika by Ryan Cayabyab and Batang Bata Ka Pa by

Apo Hiking Society) and the new generation of OPM(Hawak Kamay by Yeng Constantino, Narda by Kamikazee,

Picha Pie by Parokya ni Edgar and Wag na Wag mong Sasabihin by Kitchie Nadal). It aims to answer questions that

explain how OPM affect their lifestyle as well as how they manage to accept OPM in their lives. In order to answer

these research goals, the researchers opted to obtain the view of PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science

and the Department of Information Technology freshmen students in line with this topic. Specifically, a total of 100

respondents from PUP-CCMIT BSCS freshmen students and another 100 respondents from PUP-CCMIT BSIT

freshmen students were randomly selected to make up the sample. Selected participants answered the survey

questionnaire. Data gathered from this research instrument were then computed for interpretation. Along with

primary data, the researcher also made use of secondary resources in the form of published articles and literatures

to support the survey results.

Research Design

The descriptive method of research was used for this study. To define the descriptive type of research,

Creswell (1994) stated that the descriptive method of research is to gather information about the present existing

condition. The emphasis is on describing rather than on judging or interpreting. The aim of descriptive research is

to verify formulated hypotheses that refer to the present situation in order to elucidate it. The descriptive

approach is quick and practical in terms of the financial aspect. Moreover, this method allows a flexible approach,

thus, when important new issues and questions arise during the duration of the study, further investigation may be

conducted.

Page 11: Comparative Final

Page 11

Descriptive research on the other hand is a type of research that is mainly concerned with describing the

nature or condition and the degree in detail of the present situation. This method is used to describe the nature of

a situation, as it exists at the time of the study and to explore the cause/s of particular a phenomenon. The aim of

descriptive research is to obtain an accurate profile of the people, events or situations. With this research type, it is

essential that the researcher already has a clear view or picture of the phenomena being investigated before the

data collection procedure is carried out. The researcher used this kind of research to obtain first hand data from

the respondents so as to formulate rational and sound conclusions and recommendations for the study. The

descriptive approach is quick and practical in terms of the financial aspect.

In this study, the descriptive research method was employed so as to identify the role and significance of

OPM music with regards to the Old and the New Generation of Songs. The researcher opted to use this research

method considering the objective to obtain first hand data from the respondents. The descriptive method is

advantageous for the researcher due to its flexibility; this method can use either qualitative or quantitative data or

both, giving the researcher greater options in selecting the instrument for data-gathering. The aim of the research

is to compare and analyze the preference of PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and the Department of

Information Technology freshmen students with regards to old and new generation of OPM; the descriptive

method is then appropriate for this research since this method is used for gathering prevailing conditions.

The research is using freshmen students from PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and

Department of Information Technology in order to gather data. The survey aims to gather primary data which were

derived from the answers the participants gave during the survey process. With the use of the survey

questionnaire, this study took on the quantitative approach of research. By means of employing quantitative

approach, researchers were able to obtain the advantage of quantitative approach and overcome its limitation.

Quantitative data collection methods are centred on the quantification of relationships between

variables. Quantitative data-gathering instruments establish relationship between measured variables. When these

methods are used, the researcher is usually detached from the study and the final output is context free.

Measurement, numerical data and statistics are the main substance of quantitative instruments. With these

Page 12: Comparative Final

Page 12

instruments, an explicit description of data collection and analysis of procedures are necessary. An approach that is

primarily deductive reasoning, it prefers the least complicated explanation and gives a statement of statistical

probability. The quantitative approach is more on the detailed description of a phenomenon. It basically gives a

generalization of the gathered data with tentative synthesized interpretations.

Quantitative methods establish very specific research problem and terms. The controlled observations,

mass surveys, laboratory experiments and other means of research manipulation in qualitative method makes

gathered data more reliable. In other words, subjectivity of judgment, which is not needed in a thesis discussion,

can be avoided through quantitative methods. Thus, conclusions, discussion and experimentation involved in the

process are more objective. Variables, both dependent and independent, that are needed in the study are clearly

and precisely specified in a quantitative study. In addition, quantitative method enables longitudinal measures of

subsequent performance of the respondents. Fryer (1991) noted that qualitative researchers aim to decode,

describe, analyze and interpret accurately the meaning of a certain phenomena happening in their customary

social contexts.

Participants

In order to determine the preference of PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and Department of

Information Technology freshmen students with regards to Old and New Generation of OPM, a total of 200

respondents were asked to participate. To achieve relevant information, all 200 respondents are freshmen

students of PUP-CCMIT Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Technology. 100

freshmen students are randomly selected from the Department of Computer Science, and 100 freshmen students

from Department of Information Technology were randomly selected to complete the 200 participants.

Simple random sampling was done for the sample selection. This sampling method is conducted where

each member of a population has an equal opportunity to become part of the sample. As all members of the

population have an equal chance of becoming a research participant, this is said to be the most efficient sampling

procedure.

Page 13: Comparative Final

Page 13

Instruments

The survey questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument for this study (see Appendix A).

The questionnaire was divided into two main sections: a profile and the survey proper. The profile contains basic

information about the respondent such as name, age, course, year and section. The survey proper contains all

concrete questions that can help answer problems within the study.

Data Processing and Analysis

After gathering all the complete questionnaire from the respondents, total responses of each item was

obtained and tabulated. After tabulation of data, related data are summed up and calculated. The percentage of

each item was calculated by the use of this formula:
