Learning outcomes We love the outdoors! We have searched high and low to find fun and adventurous activities that deliver powerful learning outcomes. Learning outcomes form the cornerstone of our values and we believe these are best achieved when your school camp is great fun. We use the outdoors as a rich resource to stimulate a sense of adventure, to build skills and to open children’s eyes and ears to the wonder of what is all around them. Our educationally rich activities will help your students improve their competencies in key areas of physical education, citizenship, science, geography, literacy and numeracy. Furthermore, to fully appreciate their camping experience, your children need some unstructured time to enjoy their tents with their friends. After all, having some chill time is part of the whole camping and outdoor experience. Our programmes reflect this philosophy, with unstructured time built in.

Exceptional - Brilliant day from start to finish. There were also great cross-curricular links with the science curriculum and some great vocabulary learning for the children. The teamwork skills that were developed were great but also brought out a competitive element. I would recommend that all schools access at least one of these days – the learning was fantastic. Headteacher, North Ormesby Primary School, March 2014

Awesome! - The camp this year was brilliant. The two leaders were fantastic and were great with the children. Both were really friendly and approachable during the camp. We will definitely be booking again next year. Teacher, Wadsworth Fields Primary School, July 2014 Fantastic - Thank you so much for a fantastic two days! The children loved every minute of it, and the camp was just what we wanted. It is an experience they’ll never forget, and the Adventure Camp will now be a permanent feature of our school’s offer to children. The staff were incredibly positive and approachable, and the activities were engaging, exciting and well-led. Arranging the Adventure Camp on our school grounds in a safe and familiar environment was perfect for anxious children (and parents!). For some children who would find a residential trip very challenging, they thrived in this environment, and it will certainly give them the confidence to go on longer residential trips later in their school life. The experience was excellent value for money, and tied in very well with our school’s aim to develop outdoor learning and teamwork skills. I would definitely recommend Compass Adventure to other schools. The activities were great, but also the general camp experiences – putting up the tents, toasting marshmallows on the camp fire, children sleeping in tents with all their friends. Thank you for a super camp – it’s a great idea and one we’d like to do again! Teacher, Cottenham Primary School, September 2014

Campcraft For us, allowing children some unstructured time to enjoy being in and around their tents is an important part of the whole camping experience. You’ll be sent a blank flag to personalise so that it can be hoisted up at the start of the camp, signifying the beginning of your adventure.

Build your camp Allowing the children to build their own camp is key to the Compass Adventure experience. Our traditional tents can easily take 12-14 children and are fun and easy to put up. You’ll even design your own camp flag for the opening ceremony.

Campfire Everyone loves a campfire. As the night draws in its time to join our campfire circle to tell stories, sing songs and toast marshmallows. No camp is complete without one! What’s more, our raised fire pits allow us to have a campfire anywhere without scorching the grass.

Sleeping in a tent It’s a mega sleepover! Sleeping out with friends is a truly unforgettable experience and we want your children to remember pillow fights, midnight feasts (well maybe not midnight!), funny torch silhouettes and telling silly jokes.

Cook outdoors (additional charges apply) There is something quite satisfying about cooking a meal outdoors. Working in teams, the children can practice their fire making skills. Using Kelly Kettles, they will boil water to cook their evening meals. So will it be chilli, curry, stew or pasta?

Fantastic! - Fantastic doesn’t really do justice to the camp; one word is a challenge! This was a fantastic opportunity for the children, and an event that the majority had never been fortunate to experience. I was really impressed with the staff, who had a good understanding of dealing with KS2 children, I was particularly impressed with their repertoire of activities to ‘fill’ time between activities to keep the kids engaged. Bushcraft Using the basic principles of survival, these Bushcraft sessions teach children the priorities of living outdoors, the techniques needed and more importantly the mental approach that will make it happen. They CAN do it!

Making fire (using a fire steel) Fire making is a classic activity that brings a smile to everyone’s face. Children will learn how to use varying sizes of wood in sequence and then, using fire steels, everyone takes a turn to light some tinder. Using their fire and some traditional ingredients, they will learn to make bread or pancakes…

Making fire (using a friction bow) (Yr 5 & 6) Being able to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together would be most people’s embodiment of a Bushcraft skill…. Our team friction bow promotes a spirit of cooperation and persistence. The resulting sense of achievement will keep them buzzing all day.

Shelter building & wilderness rescue This is a fun and engaging session that will teach your children how to react if they come across an injured friend. What happens if they are in a remote place? Can they improvise a stretcher? Can they build a shelter? Should someone go for help? How will the emergency services find them…

The Bushtucker Trial From small grubs to large locust, these high protein snacks are eaten by at least two billion people as part of their normal daily diets. Cultural diversity is discussed with the group before they tackle the Bushtucker Trial. Will anyone dare to eat a small grub or maybe even the goliath… the 5cm locust?

Inspiring - Although totally exhausting this was one of the moments that keeps me teaching! Every child who took part had a truly amazing time and there were one or two who were a little teary when the flag came down at the end of the camp. The activities were fun and engaging as well as teaching the children valuable lessons such as how to work together as a team. Teacher, Thameside Primary School, June 2014

Team We’ve searched the globe to bring you something different. Our unique experiential learning activities are designed to develop key life skills whilst cunningly disguised as fun activities. These activities have learning outcomes such as communication, teamwork, co-operation, leadership, mutual respect, self-esteem, listening skills, flexibility, mathematics, descriptive language and science. For example…

Leonardo’s Bridge A superb task based on a portable bridge designed by Leonardo Da Vinci’s over 500 years ago! The brilliance of the design is that it doesn’t require nails, screws or string… just simple science. Your students can replicate this design but the question is… will the bridge hold their weight?

Team Navigator Drawing a route around a maze with a pen is easy, right? … But this pen is attached to lots of strings being held by all of the team. One false move and the game is up. This challenge requires clear communication and effective co-operation from everyone if they are to succeed.

Memory Lane Clear communication and descriptive language are key in this physical version of Chinese whispers. The team will need to repeatedly replicate a pattern of coloured blocks that they cannot see… it can only be described. It starts with easy patterns and progresses as the team develop their methodology.

Tower of Power Who can build the tallest tower? Picking up the blocks with a suspended hook or balancing them to make a tower is not easy, so the group will need to plan, review and cooperate. Can they listen to other ideas? Can the individuals put aside their ideas to help deliver someone else’s plan?

Brilliant!!!! - Thanks to the team for a fantastic 24 hours. The children and staff alike had an amazing time, and what a brilliant opportunity for our younger children to experience their first night away from home! We will definitely be booking again! Teacher, Weston Primary School, May 2014

Create Being outdoors is not all about survival so Compass Adventure can also provide a range of creative activities to compliment and enhance the overall experience. After all, making things and having some good old-fashioned fun is also a fundamental feature of any great camping experience.

Land Art This session is a chance for children to create a picture or sculpture using natural material such as twigs, leaves, grass, pebbles, flowers or even rubbish. Working together in pairs they will create & review each other’s art. Then working in larger groups they will design and produce more ambitious creations.

Withy Lanterns Who needs a torch when you can make a magical withy lantern? A hands-on experience using sticks, tissue paper and your imagination. Work with us to make bright, simple shapes that have a beautiful translucent quality when lit.

Survival Bracelet These funky bracelets are made from paracord but do have a serious use… They can be untied and used for lashings shelters, tourniquets, shoelaces, snares, tying splints, or, if you tease out the threads, even fishing lines and sewing threads. Now that’s handy…

Green Man Masks Discover the folklore of the Green Man. He is thought to be the inspiration for Peter Pan and Robin Hood and, some believe, the original Father Christmas! Children will hear the legends and interpretations of the Green Man before then making their very own mask.

Worthwhile - Once again, we were extremely pleased with the visit. Children were engaged and enthusiastic all of the time because of the different activities that were offered to them. In the group, there were many different personalities but because of the range of activities, all of the children worked together and got on. Teacher, Ainthorpe Primary School, June 2014

Games The more they run around…. the more they sleep! So our fun-packed games sessions offers an excellent opportunity for children to dash about, re-charge their mental batteries and socialise, as well as playing a valuable role in promoting healthy physical activity.

Kin Ball Highly energised and ‘hugely’ fun, this massive ball has so many applications but the best results come when the children work together. They will tackle the gladiator ring, have a shootout with the sheriff, team balance challenge, cross the farmers’ field and much more. They never want this session to stop!

Archery “The Hunger Games makes Archery cool for kids” according to the press, and who are we to argue. Archery is a classic sport that can be delivered either as an experience or as a competition. Using simple games and competitions, your pupils will have the opportunity to replicate so many famous archers, past and present.

Water Rocket Race Never has learning Newton's third law of motion (equal and opposite reaction) been so much fun. Our easy-to-build and completely safe water rockets are literally a blast. Teams take part in a knockout competition to see who can collect, assemble and fire their rockets first. And they fly… up to 100ft high!

Enriching - From my initial enquiry, through to ‘de-camp’ I found our camping experience with Compass to be enriching from beginning to end. There was a strong, and extremely welcome focus on safety, from the very start and this continued through the night and into the next day. Organising such an adventure for 50 children can be a little daunting, but the high standards of professionalism from Compass made the whole experience both possible and enjoyable. I would recommend that every child, in every school in North Yorkshire should have such opportunities. Headteacher, Roecliffe Primary School, May 2014
