PASSING THE BALL

Each team is to consist of TEN members, FOUR of whom must be of the opposite gender. A large ball will be passed alternately over the head and between the legs to the person at the back of the team who then runs to the front and begins passing the ball over his/her head. The race continues until the original leader is back to his/her place at the front of the team.

If a team breaks hands, they are disqualified.

NOTE: Do not let the first person begin too quickly as he/she has all the running to do.

BEER CAN SHY

Seven cans will be placed down the centre of the hall.

Seven members will be at point A; the 8th member at point B will field and retrieve the ball.

INDOOR CRICKET

Each team is to consist of TEN members, FOUR of which must be of the opposite gender.

Fielding side must have a bowler and a wicket keeper, the rest are fielders.

A batsman shall have ONE good bowl to him/her. The bat should be held in two hands. The batter receives a bowl from the bowler (who is stood approximately 6m away) and attempts to hit it. If he/she HITS or MISSES it, they MUST run around a skittle at square leg at four metres away – carrying the bat. The bowler keeps bowling at the stumps regardless of whether the batter is back or not. Once the batter is back in the batting square (either bodily or touching it with the bat) no more bowls can be bowled at the stumps.

No-Balls

A ball that is not within the reach of the batsman on his batting side, and is higher than the top of his/her shoulder or lower than the knees, shall be considered a no-ball. A ball bowled at such a pace as to put in danger the safety of the batsmen will also be considered a no ball.

All balls must be delivered by an UNDERARM action from within the bowling square, and must reach the batsman without bouncing.

Batsmen Out

If caught, unless the ball is a no-ball, note that the batsmen are out if they are caught two handed if the ball only hits the roof or one handed if the ball has only hit the wall. If the ball hits the roof and then a wall the batsman can still be caught out if the ball is caught one handed.

If stumped at the batting area

If the bowler delivers a bowl and hits the stumps whilst the batter is running

If the bowler’s ball reaches the stumps with a good ball past the batter

Batsmen are NOT OUT if stumped by fielder – the fielder must return ball to bowler for bowler to aim for wickets.

Once OUT the next member of the team moves into the batting position.

A soft ball (i.e. tennis ball) will be used in the interests of safety.

FRISBEE

Each team is to consist of THREE males and THREE females. One team to compete at a time. The team will have to do as many complete programmes (as set out below) as possible during a given time. If the frisbee is dropped, then the team will have to start from the beginning again.

Competitors are required in person to produce on the day of the competition their current and signed membership card, with suitable photograph, or a fine of £20 will be imposed for non-production.

PROCEDURE

Each team will be sent 3 (three) words with the correct dictionary explanation, one for each team member, one week before the Competition. For each word the other two team members will have to make up a “Bluff” explanation, lasting no longer than 1 minute, to try and fool the other team.

One of the opposing team members (1 turn each) has to guess which is the correct explanation; members are allowed to confer, however, the chosen member has to make the final decision. 2 points will be awarded for the correct answer.

There will be three rounds, therefore, allowing each team member the opportunity to outwit the opposition.

Teams will be judged on the creativity put into trying to “Bluff” the opposition. 10 points per word, thirty points per round, making a total of 90. Competition Aim

Encourage YFC members to speak in public, without the formalities of addressing a formal gathering, to be quick thinking and humorous and to entertain an audience

REPRESENTATION

Clubs may enter one team.

ELIGIBILITY

A team shall consist of four (4) members, who must all be 21 years of age or under on 1st September 2019 and full members of a Club affiliated to CFYFC.

Competitors are required in person to produce on the day of the competition their current and signed Membership Card, with suitable photograph, or a fine of £20 will be imposed for non-production.

PROCEDURE

The Just A Minute page of the BBC Radio 4 website lists the broadcast times of the current series. Pod casts of previous shows can also be found on that webpage as well as many recordings on YouTube. YFC members are encouraged to listen to the show or recordings of the show as they prepare for the competition rounds.

There will be a Chairman (Judge), a Score Keeper and a Time Keeper.

The chairman will act as judge.

Competitors will be provided with topics for discussion. This allows panel members to research topics and prepare factual background and comedic content. Competitors are NOT ALLOWED any notes or reminder cards when ‘on stage’.

A panel will consist of four members, each drawn from a different club/team.

The panel will be given one minute to speak on a given subject/topic.

The panel will speak to a total of 4 topics before the scores are announced by the scorer.

The four panellists are challenged to speak for one minute on a given subject without "repetition, hesitation, or deviation".

Repetition - you must try not to repeat yourself. This is only within the given subject. If the subject is lost and you gain it back again you cannot repeat anything you said earlier. You can repeat what someone else has said and you can use any part of the subject as many times as you like. People do slip up on using plurals of a given word again and again however; which is different to the singular word.

"Repetition" means the repetition of any word or phrase, although challenges based upon very common words such as "and" “is” “or” are generally rejected except in extreme cases. Words contained in the given subject are exempt unless repeated many times in quick succession. Skilful players use (sometimes obscure) synonyms in order to avoid repeating themselves. The term "BBC" can be successfully challenged for repetition of "B".

Hesitation - can be difficult to judge, however if they say "erm" that should be a hesitation. It can be difficult when people breathe. But there is a difference between a breath and a longer pause. One place competitors slip up is pausing for laughter. That is hesitation.

"Hesitation" is watched very strictly: a momentary pause before resumption of the subject can give rise to a successful challenge, as can tripping over one's words. Even pausing during audience laughter or applause (known as "riding a laugh") is usually not permitted.

Deviation – Is fairly simple apart from if it is an incorrect use of the grammar of a word or word within a subject it is a deviation from the given subject.

"Deviation" means deviating from the subject, but has also been interpreted as "deviating from the English language as we know it", "deviation from grammar as we understand it", deviating from the truth, and sometimes even logic, although often leaps into the surreal are allowed.

Each of the competitors shall start a topic first. A draw shall be made to determine which order the panellists speak first on each of the 4 topics (e.g. number 1 to start the first topic 1st; number 2 to start the second topic 1st etc.).

The time keeper starts the clock when the first panel member starts to speak. When a challenge is made the clock is stopped. The clock is re-started when the next speaker starts to speak. Time keeper blows a whistle when 60 seconds (one minute) has elapsed.

Panellists should try to challenge the speaker for: Repetition, Hesitation or Deviation

A panellist scores a point for making a correct challenge against whoever is speaking. The chairman (judge) will decide if the challenge is correct or not and will exercise the benefit of the doubt evenly.

The speaker gets a point if the challenge is deemed incorrect and then resumes speaking on the subject/topic.

If a witty interjection amuses the audience, even though it is not a correct challenge, at the chairman’s discretion, both the challenger and speaker may gain a point, the speaker then resumes speaking on the subject/topic.

A panellist who makes a correct challenge takes over the subject for the remainder of the minute, or, until he or she is correctly challenged.

The speaker also scores a point if they are the person speaking when the 60 seconds expires.

If the speaker speaks for the whole minute without being interrupted or challenged, he/she gains an extra point. (1 point for speaking when whistle blows and 1 point for speaking for one whole minute without being interrupted or challenged).

It is unusual for a speaker to speak within the three cardinal rules for any substantial length of time, whilst remaining coherent, and also being amusing. Therefore, to speak for the full minute without being challenged is a special achievement.

TIMING

Each panel will speak for one minute for each of the 4 topics.

SUMMARY OF MARKS

A panellist scores a point for making a correct challenge against whoever is speaking.

The speaker gets a point if the challenge is deemed incorrect.

If a witty interjection amuses the audience, even though it is not a correct challenge, both the challenger and speaker may gain a point, at the chairman's discretion.

A panellist also scores a point if they are the person speaking when the 60 seconds expires. An extra point is awarded when a panellist speaks for the entire minute without being challenged.

A scorer will keep scores as the rounds of the competition commence, and the winner will be team with the highest score.

In the event of a tied score after each team has competed, the two tied teams will make two panels (2 members from team A and two from team B and vice versa). Each panel will be given one topic and a draw shall take place to determine who speaks first. The team gaining the highest scores after each panel has discussed their topic for one minute, will be deemed the winner. Panellists may only make challenges to competitors not from their team.

PENALTIES

The use of foul language will be penalised with a deduction of marks.

Starts the timer count down from 60secs when the member starts speaking

Starts speaking on the topic when asked to without any repetition, deviation or hesitation

Stops time at the sound of a noise

Team members may interject at any point if they feel that the member speaking displays any repetition, deviation or hesitation – if the member wants to interject they make a noise with Buzzer/Sound Maker

Chair acknowledges Member that made the noise first and asks them for their Challenge

Member confirms if the challenge was Repetition, Deviation or Hesitation and justifies their answer

Chair either accepts the challenge and awards the challenging member a point and invites them to continue speaking on the topic OR disregards the challenge as incorrect so the challenging member looses a point and the member who was speaking gets awarded the point and invited to continue speaking

Keeps the score and ensures Chair knows time remaining for the topic when time has stopped

* Whichever member was invited to speak continues to speak on the topic when asked to without any repetition, deviation or hesitation

*Non Speaking Team members may interject at any point if they feel that the member speaking displays any repetition, deviation or hesitation – if the member wants to interject they make a noise with Buzzer/Sound Maker

*If a member interjects the above process happens – until TIME (60 sec) has been reached

Chair calls time at 60 seconds and the Team Member speaking when time is called gets a bonus point

Must ensure time is called correctly

*Team Members to continue speaking until time is called. Can challenge up to call for time. If challenge on the call for time it’s at the Chair’s discretion as to whether it was on or just before time – on time they keep the point just before the challenge will be accepted

(No time penalties – all based around the 60 seconds maximum per topic)

The Team Members:

(Four Team Members in each team - all members compete on different tables and have different topics, scores from each team member are combined to make the team total)

Prior to Competition – Practice speaking on different random topics – have a look at the selection of potential topics that are listed on the rules (NFYFC Finals will list topics) Do some research if you don’t know anything on a topic that might come up

The Competition

· You are a member of a team for the evening to take part in speaking on four topics each

· It is important to have done some research prior to the competition and practice speaking on a topic at length without repetition or hesitation

· Allow as much of your personality to show through as possible – there are bonus points for a witty interjection or witty challenge

· When you challenge during the Competition ensure that you make a loud noise and then wait for the Chair to ask you for your challenge. (If you don’t wait to be asked and give a challenge – the chair might not agree that you were the first to challenge and you might give someone else the correct challenge)

· Ensure when you give your challenge – even if you aren’t sure you are correct be firm and confident and where you can give an example. This may be enough to then prove to the Chair that your challenge was correct if the Chair is unsure

· Ensure you speak clearly and not too slowly but also not too fast – as nice steady pace

· You only score if you are either speaking at the end of the minute or if you challenge correctly or make a witty interjection, so it’s important that you Challenge and not let topics pass you by

Competitors to note:

· Clarification from the International Dance Teacher’s Association which Competitors must adhere to in all 2019 – 2020 Commercial Dancing Competitions:

· ‘Floor Spins where partner contact is lost are not allowed.

· Acrobatics and lifts are allowed but no freehanded movements are allowed in any area of the Freestyle competitions, (solos/pairs/teams/rock n roll).

· ‘Freehanded’ means where there is no support or contact from the partner or no contact with the floor with feet or hands during the rotational movement, therefore, for example, cartwheels are allowed but unassisted or independent flips are not allowed.

· An Arab Spring is not allowed because it is a combination movement between a cartwheel and a walkover.

· Death Dives are not permitted.’

· Should these moves be performed in a team’s routine the routine will not be stopped, however, after the performance, the judges will make a note of any prohibited move and the team will be penalised for this.
