THERES NOTHING LIKE a good kit car show to lift your spirits and Im already gettingexcited about the Stoneleigh show on the 3rd and 4th of May. Stoneleigh was the firstshow I ever went to, back in the mid 80s, and it just blew my mind here were all the

cars Id only ever seen in the magazines and,much as I love magazines, theres nothing quitelike seeing the real thing. And over twenty yearslater, Stoneleigh remains top dog when it comesto big kit car get togethers. Its a mega event andI love everything about it. So if youve not alreadyset aside at least one day of this coming bankholiday weekend, do so now. We look forward toseeing you there.

Adam chose the recent Goodwood Festival Of Speed press day to reveal the paintjobon his Sylva Riot to the rest of the CKC team. He has had the sides of the car, whichare normally left in bare aluminium, painted to match the bright orange of thefibreglass panels and, wow, what a difference. The car looked fab before, but it looksamazing now. The Riot has always been one of my favourite kit cars I just love theway its so small... far smaller than anything else currently on offer within the industry.Its an abject lesson in proving that old saying that less is more. And now seeingAdams new painted example I must say that Im rather jealous. Hes a lucky chap.

Over the last month or so Ive been beavering away designing a website. I must pointout that Im certainly no techno geek, and the technical realities of cyber space arecompletely lost to me, but a quick search online revealed a number of companiesoffering free web space, using pre-defined web designs simply choose what style ofsite youd like, and drop in your own pictures and words... its a complete doddle andlooks surprisingly professional.

And whats the content of the website Ive been working on? Well longstandingreaders will know that I have an incurable weakness for the Car Craft Cyclone whichwas produced during the late 90s. Ive already owned two of the things and have spentthe last few years regretting selling both of them! And Ive also become increasinglyfrustrated with the complete lack of information to be found online about the car. Sothat is now in the process of being rectified via my website... www.cc-cyclone.co.uk

Over the month that this magazine is on sale well witness the end of Single VehicleApproval and the introduction of its replacement, Individual Vehicle Approval. The subject of IVA has certainly kept many a forum buzzing with strong opinions and, more often than not, information that isnt always as accurate as it could be. So our comprehensive feature on the subject in this issue, will hopefully set the record straight.

As I watched the car go through an IVA assessment, its clear that the test doesintroduce a number of small changes to the existing SVA, but for the most part, Isuspect well soon adjust andsimply build cars in an IVAapproved way, just as we have withSVA. Above all, I see no reason whyit should stop any of us fromenjoying the hobby we all love.

GROUP TEST Three Mojos


THE SYLVA MARQUE must be responsiblefor spawning more kit car companies than anyother single force within the industry. A wholecatalogue of ex-Sylva models is currentlyavailable from a host of different manufacturers:the Striker, Fury, Jester and Phoenix alloriginate from the drawing board of JeremyPhillips and now find themselves under separateownership. The Mojo project is the latest to bereleased into the wild, and MatthewBeardshaws newly-formed Meggt Ltd is behindthe venture.

When the Mojo first appeared on the scenetowards the end of the last decade, it was aheadof its time. The short supply of front-engined,rear-wheel-drive donor cars is now beginningto tell. While the Mojo wasnt the first totransplant a front-wheel-drive package into the

back of a kit car, it probably provides the mostconcise solution to the concept of a mid-engined Seven.

Having built one for himself, Matthew wasalready more than familiar with the Mojo beforetaking on the project commercially. When hediscovered it in 2004, it was the perfect car forhim. I studied engineering at university, saysMatthew, and drew up a concept of usingfront-wheel-drive components in the back of asports car and Sylva had done it!

Towards the end of his own build project in2007, Matthew approached Jeremy Phillipsasking for first refusal in the event that theproject should ever be offered for sale. After afew more conversations of increasing intent, thedeal was signed in December 2008.

The three cars here, effectively all privately

owned, neatly span the Mojos 10-yearproduction cycle and demonstrate the variousbodywork, chassis and engine options open totodays Mojo buyer; all are relevant since eachderivative remains in production. They alsoshowcase the three engine options Meggt willfocus on the Rover K-series, Ford Zetec andall-alloy Zetec SE (Sigma).

The earliest of our three test cars (the redone in these photos) is owned by Neil Everett.Remarkably, hes been using it as his sole formof transport for over four years, clocking up24,000 miles commuting to work daily and onlonger journeys including a trip to Waleswhen he managed to take his mountain bikewith him. Since the car is used every day, itsequipped with a full complement of weathergear, although Neil usually leaves the roof off

for his 10-minute drive to work, only using it tokeep the rain out when the Mojo is parked upduring the day; its easier to get in and out ofthe car with the roof off, and quieter while onthe move.

You may think that using a car as hardcoreas the Mojo daily would be more of a hardshipthan a joy, but Neil says its easier to live withthan youd expect. Only occasionally does itbecome unenjoyable, and he can usually dodgethe rain on his commute. Most of the time,though, he says its a great way to get to work.You never arrive feeling tired!

The car has a 1.8-litre Zetec engine and Neilis unsure how much power its developing(about 160bhp is his estimate) as he mapped theECU at home. I dont like paying someoneelse to do something I can do myself, he says.

Hes pretty proficient in the garage, too. Whenhe swapped from twin 40 carbs to SuzukiGSXR750 throttle bodies, the whole job wascompleted inside a weekend so he could get towork on the Monday morning.

At 6ft 2in tall, Neil was drawn to the Mojo inpart because it was one of the few kit cars hecould get comfortable in. Entry and exit is mucheasier with the hood off, but seeing Neil foldhimself through the opening made by the rigidsidescreen is an education in deftness. As I slideinto the drivers seat (roof off, thankfully), andkeep sliding until I reach the pedals, itsblatantly apparent that he has made the most ofthe Mojos interior space I can just about seeover the steering wheel by the time my feetmake contact with the pedals. Theres a lot ofspace available in here!

The Zetec engine settles to a steady idle onNeils own map and, as we take to the bumpycountry lanes that form the route of this test, itsclear that this car has been thoroughlydeveloped over its relatively high mileage. Neilworks as a CAE engineer in the vehicledynamics department of Land Rover (whichmeans he works with simulations of suspensionset-ups and their effects on steering, handlingand ride). He has spent considerable timetweaking the coil-over dampers to achieve acompliant ride. The result is 275lb/in springs allround (switching from the original spec of400lb/in springs at each corner) with thedampers set to zero clicks. Across ruts andpotholes, you can see the front wheels bobbingfrantically, the suspension working hard to ironout the road. Meanwhile, the car remains utterly

FEW KIT CAR operations have beenas proactive as Tiger Racing in strivingto offer a variety of Lotus Seven inspiredderivatives. From the original Super Sixin 1990, Tiger has continually revampedand updated the concept, offering carsto meet virtually every price bracket,from super affordable (look no furtherthan the Tiger Avon) to top-end exotic(the twin-engined Tiger Z100 shouldcover it nicely).

I might even go so far as to suggestthat the diversity of models on offer has,at times, potentially been confusing, butmore recently the company has slimmeddown the model line-up withoutneglecting any specific customer base. Ifyoure looking for a Lotus Seven inspiredreplica, regardless of your budget, there

will be a Tiger model to suit. The latest newcomer to the range is

the all aluminium bodied RS6. And Imnot just talking about some of the panels everything is aluminium, includingcomplex parts such as the nosecone andscuttle. In any normal situation, thiswould immediately result in a huge hikein price, since working in aluminium isextremely time consuming and a skilledcraft. But in true Tiger fashion, thecompany has learnt the skills requiredand now fabricates the bodywork in-house, which keeps the premium for anRS6 down to a more modest 3700increase over the fibreglass bodied R6 (afigure which also includes a differentfront suspension and other ancillaries).

And there are other changes to the

RS6 which make it a unique model in itsown right. While most of thecomponentry and chassis are indeedtaken from the R6, the front suspensionis all new, with a pushrod based systemusing a top bellcrank and internallylocated coil-over damper. Not only doesthe new suspension look cleaner from theoutside but, according to Tigers PaulDudley, there are dynamic advantagestoo, with a more precise steering feel andbetter front end control.

Although the engine choice can beflexible, the standard RS6 installationwill be a brand new 2-litre Ford Duratectwin-cam developing around 200bhpwith the help of Weber Alpha throttlebodies and Tigers own engine map. Acomplete kit in a box, including brand

A FIRST GLANCE at Steve Martinscar, and the impression is one of a niceexample of the ever-popular Fisher Fury and thats just how Steve likes it. When heplanned this project he wanted a car thatlooked obviously well built and thatevoked a production feel, but hecertainly didnt want a car that shoutedabout its talents. That said, theres plentyof talent here, should you care to look alittle closer...

Like many of us, hes a sucker for aV8 the sound, the slug of power, theeffortless torque. His Fury was always

it, but had receipts for 8000. At 4000it seemed a bargain.

When Steve bought the kit in 2004 itwas already six years old, and was one ofthe very first Furys to be supplied with aChapman strut based independent rearsuspension. Indeed, almost immediatelyit appears the design was changed fromwhats on his car.

Having stripped the rolling chassisback down and reassembled everythingto ensure it was all correct, the firstserious job Steve had to deal with was theinstallation of the 3.9-litre Rover V8 hehad for the car. Two main installationcriteria would have a major impact onthe look of the finished product. Mostimportantly, he was determined that thebonnet would not be modified and,secondly, he wanted the exhausts to exitat the back of the car, not out of the sidesills, as per most Furys.

But even getting the engine into thecar was complicated. Firstly, there was agearbox to consider. The original Rover

going to be capable. Steves been a long term kit car

fanatic, with a Marlin Roadster, PilgrimBulldog, Spartan and Cox GTM Coupall passing through his hands over thelast decade, but while he fiddled with allof them, hed never built a car until theFury came along.

Advertised privately as a rollingchassis/body kit, the Fury has beensupplied by the factory with thesuspension assembled and the chassismodified for a V8 installation. Theowner had subsequently barely touched
