Dr Chan obtained his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training under Professor H. Tideman in the University of Hong Kong, where he graduated with a Master of Dental Surgery in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Subsequently, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore. Dr Chan held major leadership position in Singapore, including President, Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (Singapore), President, College of Dental Surgeons (Singapore) and Chairman, Chapter of Dental Surgeons, Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He has also chaired the MOH-AMS Clinical Practice Guidelines Workgroup on Dental Implants and Dental review committee for the Table of Surgical Procedures. He is still serving as Chairman of the Credentials Committee and the Oversight Committee for Aesthetics Facial Procedures for Dental Practitioners, Singapore Dental Council. Dr Chan practices a broad scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a special interest in reconstructive jaw surgery for Dental Implantology, as well as Corrective Jaw Surgery for Dento-Facial Disharmonies. Dr Chan teaches and lectures internationally and is devoted to the advancement of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is currently in private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre.

Basic Module

Course Overview: The program is designed to take the participants through a systematic process of learning implant dentistry. Starting with basic concepts, diagnosis, treatment planning, dental implant surgery and implant prosthodontics, the attendees have the opportunity to develop sequential treatment plans on their own patients and participate in performing surgeries with the assistance of experienced faculty in Implant Dentistry. The attendees also experience hands-on workshops where procedures such as cone-beam imaging analysis, dental implant placement on dental models and pig jaws for the complete understanding of basic implant surgical procedure. Learning Objectives: 9 Understand the history of dental implants, current status and future development of implant dentistry. 9 Classify and define the different types of dental implant systems 9 Classify and define different prosthetic options for implant dentistry. 9 Recognize the maxillary and mandibular anatomical considerations and limitations in relation to implant placement 9 Interpret diagnostic imaging including cone beam CT for the assessment of implant site 9 Perform a thorough medical history and clinical evaluation of the implant patient. 9 Recognize indications for referral to dental specialists 9 Develop an organized treatment planning approach 9 Develop a protocol for patient preparation; (medico-legal and financial) 9 Perform implant surgical placement procedures for simple 1-2 implant cases 9 Understand and apply principles for peri-implant hard and soft tissue surgery 9 Management of dental implant complications

Course Overview: This Module is primarily concerned with basic ridge augmentation with autogenous bone as well as non-autogenous bone substitutes, post-extraction ridge preservation and immediate implant placement. Techniques in autogenous bone harvesting from the chin and ramus will also be covered. Pig’s jaw and dental models will be used for hands-on practice. Alternative to bone grafting such as distraction osteogenesis, zygomatic implants and nerve transposition will be discussed. Learning Objectives:

9 Identify deficiencies in ridge dimensions that compromise implant placement 9 Know the various options for ridge augmentation 9 Understand the physiology of bone graft healing- autogenous bone and bone substitutes

9 Perform autogenous bone harvesting from the chin and ramus 9 Recognize potential complications of autogenous bone harvesting

9 Perform ridge splitting

9 Perform ridge augmentation using bone block

9 Perform ridge augmentation / preservation using guided bone regeneration techniques

+1 Live Surgery Session Course Overview: This module is dedicated to management of the edentulous posterior maxilla. Augmentation of the atrophic posterior maxillary edentulous ridge with sinus floor augmentation using a crestal approach and lateral approach will be taught in detail. Both techniques will be taught using generic instrumentation as well as proprietary instrument developed by Megagen. Indications and contraindications for sinus bone grafting and the management of potential complications will also be covered in depth.

Learning Objectives: 9 Identify suitable patients for sinus floor augmentation 9 Understand the indications for different approaches to sinus floor augmentation 9 Understand rationale for simultaneous and staged implant placement following sinus floor augmentation 9 Manage complications arising from sinus floor augmentation 9 Understand the maxillary sinus anatomy of partially and completely edentulous patients. 9 Diagnose the common pathologies in the maxillary sinus.

9 Interpret diagnostic imaging including cone beam CT 9 Perform crestal and lateral approaches on a boiled egg, a dental model and a pig’s jaws 9 Perform a lateral approach sinus floor augmentation on a patient
