I thought Excel would be the ideal tool for it. A client comes to me with a problem and I need to quote them for a fix. The cost of fixing this problem is proportional to the amount of labour time involved, which is proportional to the number of 'units' this person needs fixing. So, let us define each persons problem as having so many units, X. e.g. Person A has a problem with 10 units that needs fixing. Person B has 140 units, Person C has 30 units. I give each enquiry a quote. The customer then decides whether or not to go with me or with a competitor. A history of quotations against sales is built up. Each customer is given a rought quote based on previous experience. Consequently, there is going to be variation in the cost charged per unit. My goal is to optimise the cost charged per unit to maximise revenue. The lower the cost per unit, the higher the likelihood of a sale. But the lower the cost per unit also leads to less revenue per sale. How do we go about calculating the optimum cost per unit? Are there any tools within Excel that deal with this type of problem?
