Thanks to the tramway, Madrid changed from a city to ametropolis, experiencing a growth of urban space, unthinkableonly a few years earlier.

The first attempts were contemporaries of the appearance ofthe railroad and of the use of the steam traction engine.

The exhibition ¨DESTINATION MADRID. From the Tramway toLight Rail Transit, 150 years of history¨ takes advantage of theexpressive capacity of photography to address multiple andfundamental views of two proposals:

The first route, ¨The Tramway Makes the City¨ focuses on theanalysis of this mode of urban transportation that establishes,accompanies and transforms itself along with that of thegrowing city.

This is achieved by the presentation of snapshots of what thenetwork looked like over the years, with photographs that showhow the city grows and new neighbourhoods are incorporatedinto the urban fabric, and by inserting illustrations and imagesof how the rolling stock evolved into becoming the modern lightrail transit.

The second route, ¨Enjoy City Life From the Tramway¨ exploresthe everyday use and presence of the tramway.

In a pleasant and at times, almost nostalgic way, the power ofthe images allow us to contemplate the social customs and usesof the first tramways to the present day, relying on thetransportation system as a conductive thread that interacts withthe public, as a backdrop of daily activities, political changes, themilestones of the city and the social evolution of Madrid.

In short, the exhibition gives us a complete, attractive anddidactic retrospective vision of the public transportation systemof Madrid, commented on by some of the best experts on thetopic, that will surprise and amuse visitors, even provoking afeeling of nostalgia.

A pulso de tranvía, Madrid transitó de la ciudad a lametrópoli experimentando un crecimiento del espaciourbano inimaginable tan sólo unos años antes.

Las primeras tentativas fueron coetáneas a la aparición del ferrocarril y del uso de la máquina de vapor para lanavegación.

Al igual que estos avances facilitaron el desarrollo de losgrandes flujos migratorios, el tranvía se convierte en piezaclave de la movilidad cotidiana, al constituir el primer modode transporte urbano regular, público y colectivo.

La exposición ‘DESTINO MADRID. Del tranvía al metro ligero,150 años de historia’ aprovecha la capacidad expresiva de lafotografía para abordar desde múltiples miradas el papel deltranvía en la historia de Madrid, en dos recorridos:

El recorrido 1 'El tranvía haciendo ciudad' se centra en elanálisis de este modo de transporte urbano que seestablece, acompaña y se transforma junto a una ciudad enpleno crecimiento.

Ello se consigue mediante la presentación de instantáneasde la red en distintos años, de fotografías que muestrancomo crece la ciudad y se incorporan nuevos barrios al tejidourbano e intercalando láminas e imágenes sobre laevolución del material móvil, hasta alcanzar los modernosmetros ligeros.

En el recorrido 2 'Vivir la ciudad desde el tranvía' se explorala cotidianidad del uso y presencia del tranvía.

De manera amena y, en ocasiones, casi nostálgica la fuerzade las imágenes nos permite contemplar los usos ycostumbres sociales desde los primeros tranvías hastanuestros días, que cuenta con el propio sistema detransporte como hilo conductor, que interactúa con laspersonas y que ejerce de telón de fondo de las actividadesdiarias, los avatares políticos, los hitos de la ciudad y lapropia evolución social de Madrid.

En definitiva, la exposición permite una completa, atractiva ydidáctica visión retrospectiva del sistema de transportepúblico en Madrid, comentada por algunos de los mejoresexpertos en el tema, que moverá a su visitante a la sorpresa,la diversión y, por que no, la añoranza.
