Welcome from the Artistic Director
Welcome to the 2017-2018 Repton School Concert Series! It has been a huge privilege and a great joy to put together my rst series here at Repton School, and I am delighted with the outcome. From jazz to classical, from the Birmingham Conservatoire to Spanish beaches, musical dances to Pentecostal re, there is something here to suit all musical tastes.
I am particularly pleased to continue the Series’ long tradition of providing a platform for young, up-and-coming artists and groups. In turn, many of these musicians will work with our own pupils during their visit and, in some cases, we will put these pupils under the spotlight as part of the evening concerts. We look forward to musical synergies being created, with some high-quality music-making along the way.
I am delighted to welcome the young but increasingly established choral group Voces8 to Repton for the rst time. Their work with school choirs is simply inspirational, and I look forward to seeing them work with Repton’s Chamber Choir before displaying some vocal reworks during a programme of choral dances through the ages.
We also welcome newly established chamber groups Konstellation and the A4 Brass Quartet, demonstrating between them some extremely versatile and creative programming, as well as some highly
entertaining playing. Please do also support the pre-concert talk before Konstellation’s performance, given by Dr Peter Siepmann (Repton’s Head of Academic Music) on the subject of Clara Schumann’s spectacular Piano Trio in G Minor. We look forward in May to an evening with current rising stars from the string department at the Birmingham Conservatoire, furthering our strong relationship with this key local music institution.
The Series will move to the School’s 400 Hall in January for a very special event featuring the spectacular National Youth Jazz Orchestra Ambassadors, with leader Mark Armstrong. Performing alongside Repton’s own Jazz Band, this group of young professionals will take us through both jazz classics and newly commissioned pieces, some written especially for the NYJO. An evening not to be missed.
From a keyboard perspective, I am delighted to be featuring both our ne Chapel organ and new Steinway piano in two concerts. Firstly, renowned pianist Charles Owen will provide the programme ‘Bach Meets the Romantics’, showcasing two of Liszt’s arrangements of works by his contemporaries Wagner and Schumann, as well as a complete performance of Chopin’s Opus 28 Preludes. Then, as close to the Feast of Pentecost as we could manage, our own Jeremy Woodside will play an organ recital of seasonal music through the ages - aided by a large screen so we do not miss the action!
Repton’s pupils and sta will be a particular feature of two annual events; rstly, Repton music sta will put together a Spanish-themed evening (along with sangria and tapas during the interval) while, in April, we welcome the inimitable David Owen Norris to judge this year’s Young Musician of the Year Final.
So, an excellent year ahead! I am hugely grateful for the loyal support shown by many concert-goers, and look forward to meeting more of you throughout the season.

Clara Schumann and friends
Konstellation was founded by pianist Libby Burgess in 2013, as a means of exploring the intersection of song and chamber music. Drawing together her expertise in song and in working with instrumentalists, Libby constructs programmes where the sung and instrumental soundworlds constrast and complement, and brings in the creme of her colleagues to perform them. Truly a musical Konstellation!
Aoife Miskelly | sopranoJamie Campbell | violinCara Berridge | celloLibby Burgess | piano
Konstellation will present an attractive and broad programme of Romantic repertoire which includes Clara Schumann’s spectacular Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17, as well as works by Brahms and Robert Schumann.
This event will be proceeded at 6.30pm by a talk on Clara Schumann’s Trio, given by Repton School’s Head of Academic Music, Dr Peter Siepmann. All are welcome to attend.

REPTON SCHOOL YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR FINALAdjudicator: David Owen Norris

8.45pm - SENIOR FINAL
This year we welcome performer, broadcaster and teacher Professor David Owen Norris as our adjudicator. Described by the Seattle Times as ‘one of the most iconic personalities in English music of any period’, Norris is a familiar face on music television. His analysis of Jerusalem in the Prince of Wales’s programme on Sir Hubert Parry sent critics into raptures, and his Chord of the Week - returning for its fourth series this summer - has helped make BBC2’s PromsExtra one of the most watched classical music programmes in the world. His popular Radio 4 Playlist series is often repeated, and on Radio 3 his contributions to Building a Library are keenly relished. Norris has a long history with Radio 3, which discovered him as a young artist: in his rst few years as a solo performer he made over two hundred broadcasts.
