Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota
Reformation Day October 30, 2016
Call to Worship: “A Mighty Fortress” Gin Kuske, piano
Processional Hymn (Congregation and Choir): A Mighty Fortress (arr. Johnson) All: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing
Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Choir Only: 2 Did we, in our own strength confide Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his Name, From age to age the same,
And he must win the battle
All: 3 And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us;
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, For lo, his doom is sure.
One little word shall fell him.
All: 4 That word above all earthly powers, No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through him who with us sideth:
Let good and kindred go, This mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever. Amen. © 1965 Augsburg Fortress OneLicense.net A-726501. Used by permission: OneLicense, no. A-726501.
Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Exhortation P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto
God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
Confession of Sins P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with
which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal
punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and
I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent,
bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and
merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
Forgiveness of our Sin (Absolution) P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant
of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the
command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the
Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Lord, Have Mercy! (Kyrie)

Glory in the Highest (Gloria in Excelsis)

Greeting and Prayer of the Day (Salutation and Collect)
P Let us pray.
Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people.
Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of
temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving
peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Old Testament Reading: Revelation 14:6–7 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to
those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said
with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has
come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Second Reading: Romans 3:19–28 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so
that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
5
For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the
law comes knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the
Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus
Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of
the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by
faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had
passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he
might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of
works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from
works of the law.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Anthem: “How Can I Keep From Singing” Adult Choir
Alleluia
Holy Gospel: John 8:31–36 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are
truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They
answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone.
How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave
to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the
Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
6
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Confession of Faith (Creed of Nicea)
C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all
things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His
Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things
were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and
was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and
was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And
the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into
heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with
glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from
the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped
and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian
and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and
I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come.
Amen.

Preface
Proper Preface P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give
thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our
Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection
opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and
with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore
praising You and saying:
Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus)
10
Lord's Prayer P Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will
be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil.
The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He
had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is
My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks,
He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in
My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as
you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
11
The Lord’s Peace (Pax Domini) P The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C Amen.

Distribution Hymns:
“Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness” LSB 849 1 Praise the One who breaks the darkness
With a liberating light;
Praise the One who frees the pris’ners,
Turning blindness into sight.
Praise the One who preached the Gospel,
Healing ev’ry dread disease,
Calming storms, and feeding thousands
With the very Bread of peace.
12
2 Praise the One who blessed the children
With a strong, yet gentle, word;
Praise the One who drove out demons
With the piercing, two-edged sword.
Praise the One who brings cool water
To the desert’s burning sand;
From this Well comes living water,
Quenching thirst in ev’ry land.
3 Let us praise the Word Incarnate,
Christ, who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose victorious
That we may know God by grace.
Let us sing for joy and gladness,
Seeing what our God has done;
Let us praise the true Redeemer,
Praise the One who makes us one.

“In Adam We Have All Been One” LSB 569 1 In Adam we have all been one,
One huge rebellious man;
We all have fled that evening voice
That sought us as we ran.
2 We fled Thee, and in losing Thee
We lost our brother too;
Each singly sought and claimed his own;
Each man his brother slew.
3 But Thy strong love, it sought us still
And sent Thine only Son
That we might hear His Shepherd’s voice
And, hearing Him, be one.
4 O Thou who, when we loved Thee not,
Didst love and save us all,
Thou great Good Shepherd of mankind,
O hear us when we call.
13
5 Send us Thy Spirit, teach us truth;
Thou Son, O set us free
From fancied wisdom, self-sought ways,
To make us one in Thee.
6 Then shall our song united rise
To Thine eternal throne,
Where with the Father evermore
And Spirit Thou art one. © 1969 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License .NET, no. 100010342.
“God Loved the World So That He Gave” LSB 571 1 God loved the world so that He gave
His only Son the lost to save,
That all who would in Him believe
Should everlasting life receive.
2 Christ Jesus is the ground of faith,
Who was made flesh and suffered death;
All then who trust in Him alone
Are built on this chief cornerstone.
3 God would not have the sinner die;
His Son with saving grace is nigh;
His Spirit in the Word declares
How we in Christ are heaven’s heirs.
4 Be of good cheer, for God’s own Son
Forgives all sins which you have done;
And, justified by Jesus’ blood,
Your Baptism grants the highest good.
5 If you are sick, if death is near,
This truth your troubled heart can cheer:
Christ Jesus saves your soul from death;
That is the firmest ground of faith.
6 Glory to God the Father, Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One!
To You, O blessèd Trinity,
Be praise now and eternally!
