Dear Synagogue Family,
As many of you are aware, this will be my last High Holiday season as the rabbi of Beth Shalom. It is with mixed emotions that I enter this High Holiday season. We have accom-plished great things during our time together. Our congregation has grown and we have established a significant presence in the greater community. These are accomplishments of which we can all be proud.
The many personal rela-tionships that have devel-oped during my tenure at Beth Shalom will continue long after our geographic relocation. On a personal level, the people and rela-tionships within Beth Sha-lom are a treasure and make this transition diffi-cult. Please know that regardless of my geo-graphic location and pro-fessional affiliation, I am always your rabbi and friend. During the remain-der of my tenure, I look forward to working to-gether with the lay leader-ship in building the future of our community. May we experience a wonderful High Holiday season and a very special year together.
On behalf of Elissa, Tracy and my entire family, I would like to wish you and your family a Shanah Tovah. May you be in-scribed for a Sweet and Happy New Year.

“We have accomplished great things during our
time together. Our
congregation has grown
and we have established a significant presence in the greater community.”
With Torah Blessings,
Rabbi David Ross Senter
In an effort to help you prepare for the High Holi-day season, I offer the fol-lowing notes in the form of a High Holiday guide.
The Basics
Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday evening, Septem-ber 18
th, continues on Sat-
urday, September 19th and
Sunday, September 20th.
Kol Nidre is the evening of Sunday, September 27
th
continuing on, Monday, September 28
th.
Security
Beth Shalom has a tradi-tion of being a safe, warm and welcoming environ-ment. As in previous years, you will see uni-formed, off duty police offi-cers, who will be ready to assist you with any secu-rity concern. The officers are under the direction of our Security Chairman, Captain Bill Baig. Our staff will be monitoring the entrances. Any security concerns should be re-ported to the staff and/or the police officers immedi-ately.
Parking
Parking is prohibited on the synagogue side of Passaic Avenue. To ac-commodate firefighting equipment the Fire Depart-ment has requested that

clearance be maintained at the intersection. If you have any questions re-garding the acceptability of a particular parking spot, please feel free to consult one of the uniformed offi-cers.
Ushers
Volunteer High Holiday ushers will be at the en-trance to the sanctuary. Please help us by follow-ing their directions and responding warmly when they introduce themselves.
Large Print High Holiday Prayer Books
Due to the cumbersome nature of large print prayer books, special magnifying cards are available for use with standard prayer books.
Hearing Enhancement Equipment
Our sanctuary has been equipped with hearing en-hancement dev ices . Through the use of light-weight headsets, those with hearing difficulty can receive a clear, amplified version of the service. Headsets are available from the ushers.
Homebound and Hospi-tal Bound Individuals
In the event that any indi-vidual within our commu-nity cannot make it to ser-vices, arrangements will b e m a d e f o r a home/hospital to facilitate Tikyat Shofar (sounding of the Shofar). Similarly, the Rabbi will recite Yizkor for

Shalom,
I want to express my thanks and the thanks of the participants in the Mu-sical Shabbat for having made it possible. After running into a minor glitch, it was handled by all in a most respectful and generous way. To the work of the Ritual, Program-ming and Sisterhood, be-fore and on the evening of the program, we could not have had a nicer time as per your efforts. To all of
you thank you.
We have recently been approached by two young ladies to have a young Jewish singles group meet at CBS. The Board over-whelmingly approved the groups’ meeting at the shul. The age is restricted right now to 20 and 30 year olds. Three of our board members, Hy Nadel, Leslie Kantrowitz and Karla Baig have graciously volunteered to be at the meetings to open the building and to greet their current and future mem-bers. To all, I wish them good luck and also thank our Board for a forward
looking program.
As you read this, there had been a bus trip and tour to the New Yankee Stadium. There were 56 persons on the bus and we all had a
great time. The New Sta-dium is much different than “THE HOUSE THAT RUTH BUILT.” I hope it brings the same memories over the long run that the
original stadium did.
[Ed: Pictures on page 5.]
As we approach the New Year 5770, I would hope that the congregation moves forward and we as a community can grow and be strong and healthy. I am perfectly aware of the eco-nomic strain that so many of us and our extended families are under, as both of my adult children are currently unemployed. I ask that if you can, please dip into your pockets and donate a few extra dollars to the Yom Kippur Pledge. Also be aware that there is a statement in the Yiskor prayer that states that we will donate charity in the memory of our departed loved ones. The economy has also hit the congrega-tion so if you can add a few extra dollars, please
do.
Congregation Beth Shalom is in need of a few addi-tional committee chairper-sons and members for Fundraising, Membership and Strategic Planning committees. If you are willing to help out, please let me know and I will be happy to have you on

board. The more minds
and hands the better.
We have received a letter from Rabbi Senter that he will not be renewing his contract with us when it expires next June. As a result we soon will be starting a search for a re-placement. There will be a questionnaire sent to all members asking for input as to what the search com-mittee and ultimately the Board will be looking for in that replacement. We of course wish Rabbi David and Elissa Senter the best of luck in their new ven-
ture.
To all the congregation members, associate mem-bers, and others who read this letter, May you be in-scribed in the Book of Life. May you have a Healthy, and Happy Sho-
nah Tova.
Shalom,
Larry Tornow

As the days grow
slightly cooler and we
start pulling out a
sweater it only means
one thing…..the seasons
are changing. As we
slowly turn away from
the lazy days of summer
we look forward to
moving forward into the
beauty of fall. Fall
brings us a new
beginning for Sisterhood
as well. We are looking
forward to catching up
with our friends again as
well as to many
wonderful programs and
activities this year.
To start things off this
year, following the
mood of changing
seasons Sisterhood is
planning a fun event for
our general meeting on

committee. The high holidays
are coming up and we are all
getting back to normal from
our summer break. I want to
welcome the Hebrew School
children back from summer
vacation.
Last night August 7th we had
a wonderful musical Shabbat
that left the congregation full
of electricity and excitement.
People were smiling, even
some people who wondered
what it would be like and had
reservations, were coming
out with a smile. We all
clapped and sang alone with
the Hazzan and some like me
even tried to sing. I have
been told I am tone deaf but I
tried too and had fun. For
those of you who missed it,
don’t worry, I am sure we
will do it again. I would like
to thank Sisterhood and my
wonderful Program
Committee for helping out
and the Ritual Committee for
getting the Hazzan and
making it possible. This is the
kind of event that I want to
have at congregation Beth
Shalom. So I am going to
steal a phase from my Uncle
Sam ‘WE WANT YOU’ and
we need your help, mostly
with ideas of what you would
like to see happen at our
congregation. But also maybe
to come early to some events
to move some chairs, to
make some phone calls. We
need you to come to some
meetings and give your ideas
and opinions on things.
We have a movie night
coming up for September 12th
for Selichot and a sock hop
for Nov 14th. Please if you

Out of Town For the Holi-days?
Please contact the syna-gogue office and we will be more than happy to locate an area synagogue where you can attend High Holi-day services.
Need a Letter For Your Employer or School?
Feel free to contact the synagogue office to re-quest such a letter. New Jersey State law is quite specific regarding excused absences in public school for religious observances.
(Continued from page 2) If you feel that direct com-munication from the Rabbi would be helpful, the Rabbi will be more than happy to assist in this area and is willing to speak di-rectly with anyone who might benefit from such a discussion.
Holiday Apparel
The Talaysim (prayer shawls), available at the entrance of our syna-gogue, are the kind popu-larized in post-war Jewish life. A more traditional style is the full-body, large woolen Talit. There is nothing like wrapping your-self in the full-body hug of a traditional Talit. Some of our members have pur-chased extraordinary Ta-laysim with unique de-signs. Consider enhanc-ing your High Holiday ex-perience by purchasing a unique or artistic Talit. A complete variety of Talay-
sim are available through the synagogue gift shop.
For information contact Debbie Lees @ 973-839-6388.
Junior Congregation Services
Junior congregation will take place on both days of Rosh Ha-shanah and on Yom Kippur, in the Junior Congregation room, located in the main area of the education center, on the lower level.
Childcare During the High Holidays
We are happy to announce that babysitting will be available in the pre-school area from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur (September 19
th, 20
th and
28th). If your child has any die-
tary or health concerns, please contact the synagogue office by September 8
th.

The procedure for lighting candles on the eve of the holidays is basi-cally the same as the Shabbat light-ing, except for the following details and blessings (which differ from
one festival to another):
It is permissible to kindle the holi-day candles after sundown (except when occurring on the Shabbat), however lighting the candles has to
be from a pre-existing flame.
When lighting on a Friday, light
before sunset.
When lighting on a Saturday eve-ning, the earliest one may light is
an hour after sunset.

Kever Avot
It is traditional to visit family grave-sites and recite memorial prayers during the days before the High Holi-days and/or during the ten days be-tween Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-pur. These visits offer moments of recollection and prayer, honoring the memory of those who are no longer with us. The Rabbi will be coordinat-ing several visits to cemeteries in the New York Metropolitan area. If you would like a memorial prayer chanted at a family burial site, please contact the synagogue office.
Bring Your Shofar To Services
In remembrance of the victims who died in the September 11
th attacks,
we will sound a communal shofar blast on the second day of Rosh Ha-shanah. All those who own a shofar, are encouraged to bring it to services on the second day of Rosh Hashana. If you would like a crash course in shofar blowing, please contact the Rabbi.
Children’s Shofrot
The synagogue has purchased a stock of special shofrot for the chil-dren who will be invited to the bima to participate in the shofar service.
Children’s Plush Torah
Plush Torahs are available for your children; simply ask an usher and he/she will be glad to assist you.
Tashlich
Please join us for Tashlich as we cast off crumbs into a body of water at the beginning of the New Year.
The ceremony reminds us that new beginnings are possible and that transformation of our previous behaviors is
a reasonable goal. We symboli-cally dis-card the
(Continued from page 6)
behaviors that are hurtful to our-selves and to others as we integrate healthier attitudes and behaviors into our lives.
We will join together at Hershfield Park for Tashlich @ 5:30p.m., Sun-day, September 20
th. Hershfield Park
has a playground area and many facilities which can be enjoyed by many of our families.
Fasting
Possibly the most widespread obser-vances connected to Yom Kippur, is fasting. It is a way of reminding our-selves that we are mortal beings, dependent on God for sustenance. On Yom Kippur, we break down our pride through an exercise of self-discipline and begin the year in a very humble fashion.
In is customary to precede the fast with a simple meal that is lightly di-gestible and not highly seasoned.
Athletic Shoes
Yom Kippur is about impressing God with improving our actions, rather than impressing others. Tradition, therefore, discourages wearing cloth-ing that is considered luxurious. Customarily, athletic shoes are worn as an alternative to leather dress shoes.
Candle Lighting
There is a custom to light candles in the synagogue before the Yom Kip-pur service. Everyone is invited to share in this meditative experience. Candles and holders will be avail-able, and you are welcome to join us twenty minutes before Kol Nidre for this beautiful experience. Cards with the blessings in Hebrew and pho-netic transliteration will be available.
Please note that this community ex-perience is not intended to take the
place of lighting candles at home. We hope that the experience might inspire home ritual.
Tzedakah - Charity on Yom Kip-pur
The Tzedakah – Charity campaign: Each year our Hebrew School se-lects a charity and charity boxes are distributed to the entire congre-gation. The charity selected last year was Camp Simcha, a respite camp for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. A table will be set up to receive charity boxes during Kol Nidre.

Shopping bags will be distributed on Rosh Hashanah. We ask you to fill the shopping bag with the amount of food which you would generally consume during the 24-hour period in which you are fast-ing. Donations will be received on Kol Nidre eve and distributed to area food pantries by Project Inter-faith. Project Interfaith is an ongo-ing effort of our Sisterhood’s Social Action Committee.
Calling All Youth For The Havdallah Processional
Yom Kippur is brought to a close with a very beautiful ceremony which includes the Havdallah pro-cessional. Each youngster is given a safety candle as he/she pro-ceeds up the center aisle of our dimmed sanctuary. The Havdallah is chanted, and the service con-cludes, with a final shofar blast.
Yom Kippur Break Fast
As in past years, our Sisterhood will be sponsoring a Yom Kippur Break Fast immediately after the Havdallah service. Please join us as we begin the year together.

AN ENDING AND A NEW
BEGINNING
As the Jewish year is ending, and a new year is about to begin, we think about the fast approaching High Holidays, and we enter a time of intro-spection, both backwards and forwards. What good have we done this past year, for ourselves, our families and other relatives, our friends, and for our community? What have we done as Jews this past year, including what have we done for our Syna-gogue? What do we want to accomplish in the upcoming year? Some of us will ask ourselves: what can we do to improve ourselves next year? If you ask yourselves this, my advice is for you to think in small steps. If you set a very comprehensive goal, you are not likely to succeed. By setting small goals, you are likely to succeed, and feel good about yourself. And later it the year, or in the fol-lowing year, you can go to
the next step.
I suggest that you consider one or more of the following goals on how to be better Jews, and better serve our
to our Synagogue.
With the help of all of our mem-bers, we can work together to make Congregation Beth Sha-lom a better organization next year, and help it to better meet the needs and wants of its mem-
bers.

collections for.
Well, here we are again with the start of a new school
year already upon us.
We will be having our “Welcome Back Bagels and….” on Sunday, Septem-ber 13th at 10:00 AM. This will be followed by a Bar/Bat Mitzvah meeting for all the families of our 6th and 7th graders. The first day of classes is Tuesday, Septem-
ber 15th.
There haven’t been any changes to our school and its programs other than wel-coming Jennifer Karasik as our new Hebrew School Chairperson. Jennifer will
also still be
our PTO Chairperson. As always, she is hoping that there will be many more families that will become
actively involved in our PTO.
We will be having a Chil-dren’s Story Hour on Sun-days several times during the year. Check the Hebrew School calendar as well as the dates posted in the
monthly newsletters.
As I’ve mentioned previously, please have your child bring
his/her books from this past year to class at the beginning of this school year. Some
of those books may be used to review last year’s
material.
Looking forward to greeting everyone for the High Holi-days and to another success-ful year…. My family and I wish everyone a most happy
and healthy Shanah Tovah!
Our 2008-2009 TZEDA-KAH DRIVE for Chai Lifeline’s Camp Simcha is coming to an end on Rosh Hashanah. Please send in any monies that you may have collected over the year. Although you don’t need the actual tzedakah box to make your donation, we still have tzedakah boxes that Chai Lifeline designed for us available. If you haven’t pick yours up yet and would like to have one, please call Bea in the office. They can be picked up during syna-gogue office hours or
during Shabbat services.
We will be having an-other Tzedakah Drive for the 2009-2010 year. We are asking that our Hebrew School students submit their choice of a charitable Jewish or-ganization that we could take collections for. Their choice should be presented to their class-room teacher by the first day of Hebrew School classes on Tuesday, September 15th. We will announce the se-lected charity during
High Holiday services.
We thank you in ad-vance for your support of this most worthwhile
cause.
