Striving for Simplicity A Message from Rabbi Weinberger

Candle Lighting7:05, 7:35 & 7:36 pm

In this week’s Sedrah Moshe Rabeinu delivers,

what appears to be a simple message to Bnei

Yisrael: You shall be

with Hashem your G-d. What exactly

does mean? One of the major

contemporary commentaries (Google

Translate) offers no less than twelve

interpretations of the word . Interestingly

enough, ArtScroll’s translation-“wholehearted”- is not even one of the

twelve. So that makes thirteen. Turns out the simple message is not

so simple after all- unless you go with the translation of “simple”, in

which case that’s exactly what it is. Bottom line, what exactly are we

being instructed here?

Onkelos uses the word “ ”, as in perfect. The Ramban gives the

example of a -a perfect lamb, free of any blemishes- offered

on the And while no one is expected to be perfect, the message

here is that our commitment to the should be perfect or

complete.

Rashi goes in a different direction. He suggests that we’re being

instructed . We should not worry about what

the future will bring. Don’t turn to fortune tellers or other forms of

necromancy to try to predict (or possibly change) the future. Rather,

we should be at peace with the fact that we are under the watchful eye

of Hashem, and whatever happens is for the best.

As I alluded to above, we are all familiar with another meaning of

from the in the Haggadah. While most of the divrei

Torah tend to revolve around the and , the third son at the

table is the . In the illustrated Haggadas he’s usually depicted as a

sweet, innocent boy. A simpleton. Yet, with all due respect to the

various Haggadah artists, the original was anything but.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only two people about

whom the Torah goes out of its way to provide any sort of descriptive

accolades: Moshe Rabeinu was described as an and Yaakov Avinu

as an

Of all things to call him, the Torah refers to Yaakov as an .

Here we are finally given a description of someone, a rare event, and

we’re left scratching our heads as to what it means. Was Yaakov

Avinu perfect? He was not. He married two sisters; favored one son

over the others, etc. Is the Torah telling us that he was a simpleton?

Was Yaakov the at the Seder? That doesn’t sound like a

compliment, nor does it seem to be true. Yaakov was a tremendous

Talmid Chacham who learned for 14 years in yeshiva. Immediately

following that, he went head-to- head with his cunning father-in-law,

Lavan. Over the span of two decades, he managed to marry both of

Lavan’s daughters and acquire his entire wealth. Not bad for a

Rabbi Weinberger continued from page 1 Clearly, he was not of limited intellect. Perhaps the meaning

of is that he had the tremendous wherewithal and

discipline to keep things simple. Something he needed to do in

the roller-coaster journey he took in life

implications of or wholesomeness. Hashem took our

means through it all, to keep it simple. Not to be of simple

minds, like the , but to have the ability to clarify and simplify

our priorities when necessary. Many things in this world are

gray- but, often enough, it’s black and white, if we choose to view

it through the lens of . Sometimes it’s as simple as

choosing to be a good person. The deeper questions of “What am

I in this world for?” might in fact be gray. But the simpler ones

of “What am I coming to shul for?” We all know the answer to

those ones. We just need to be a little more about it. Let us

take this perspective of into the upcoming

month of Elul and Yamim Noraim. And if we are able to do that

then, as Rashi concludes, , we will find

ourselves under the protection of Hashem, something we all can

use as we approach the

Shabbat Shoftim

How can an idea be both “out of the box”

and, indisputably, in the box? Bnot is

looking forward to answering that

question on Monday evening, inviting all

CBY women and girls to join them at 7:30

in the West Englewood tent. Seeking a

novel, yet meaningful, way to introduce

and further integrate Rebbetzin Schrier

into the CBY family, Bnot co-presidents

Sara Grinfeld and Sora Grunstein,

working with Sari Sheinfeld of our

Rabbinic Integration Committee,

developed Monday’s

Chesed 24/7 event.

Chesed 24/7 is an

organization that

provides innovative

services to the sick,

the elderly, the

developmentally

disabled, and any

individual or family

facing a life challenge. They are driven by

the belief that no one should ever be

without food, shelter, and emotional

support and no one should ever feel

alone. They try to provide assistance

whenever and wherever- 24 hours a day,

7 days a week.

For hospitalized patients, Shabbat can be

a challenging and troubling time. In an

effort to bring a bit of joy and spirit to

those patients, Chesed 24/7 presents

them with a “Shabbos in a Box,”

containing everything a patient would

need to welcome Shabbat- a tablecloth

customized to fit the hospital tray, two

electric candles, a kiddush cup, a challah

cover, Shabbat chocolates, and havdalah

spices to welcome the coming week.

(This effort complements the

organization’s other initiatives to provide

kosher hospitality rooms in hospitals,

complete Shabbat meals, etc.)

Participants at Monday’s event will pack

Shabbat boxes and write personalized

notes of support and good wishes to

patients. Rebbetzin Schrier will

introduce herself and there will be ample

time for attendees to “meet and greet.” A

light pareve dinner will be served and

there will be the opportunity to win some

great prizes.

Last Shabbat, in his afternoon shiur,

Rabbi Schrier addressed the criticality of

shared inter-generational religious

experiences- parents and children

working side-by-side, hand-in-hand, to

perform mitzvot and transmit our Jewish

values by deed and not just by word.

Monday’s event is a wonderful

opportunity for mothers and daughters

to join together in a beautiful chesed.

To attend the event, please register at

www.bnaiyeshurun.org/bnot. There is

no entrance fee, though donations are

encouraged. All proceeds from the event

will go to Chesed 24/7. Our new

Rebbetzin is looking forward to meeting

you and getting to know you better.

TORA Is Back Featuring Rabbi Schrier

Nearly four years ago, the Teaneck

Orthodox Retiree Organization (TORA)

was formally recognized by CBY as the

successor to the Chai Society, and has

been operating primarily under the CBY

aegis ever since. One key difference,

however, is that TORA’s several

hundred participants span the broader

Teaneck community and not just the

membership rolls of Bnai Yeshurun.

This substantially expanded the base of

participation and has inspired some

extremely successful programming

since its inception.

Until COVID, there were

approximately six or seven events per

year, mostly luncheon lectures with

local Rabbis and Rebbetzins, as well as

professional advisors focused on

specific legal and health topics of

interest to retirees. It was common to

see several dozen local retirees come

together to eat, chat, and learn.

Previous speakers included Peshi

Neuburger, Yael Weil, our own Rabbis

Pruzansky and Weinberger, Rabbi Beni

Krohn, Rabbi Zev Goldberg, Rabbi

Steven Weil, Rabbi Efraim Kanarfogel,

Sam Frankel on mindfulness, Benjamin

Eckman on estate planning, Elozor

Preil on financial topics affecting

retirees, Eileen Bergman on organizing

the home, and audiologist Deborah

Marcus on hearing loss. Other

successful events included local hikes

(the Palisades and the Tourne) and art

exhibits (at the Bronx Botanical

Gardens).

This week will be TORA’s first event

post-COVID, on Tuesday, August 17th

at 1:00 pm in the Ogden Tent. Our new

, Rabbi Elliot Schrier, will

speak on “The Mitzvah of Teshuva and

the Joy of Being a Lifelong Learner.” All

are invited to join at 12:40 pm for a pre-

Shiur meet-and-greet with Rabbi

Schrier followed by his inspirational

talk.

Anyone who is interested in joining the

TORA mailing list, or helping in

planning future events, is invited to

contact Michael Karlin

([email protected]) or Bob Wurzburger

([email protected]) for further

information.

Virtual Youth Wing!

Shoftim in “Hashtag” Form

• This week’s parsha is all about #Leadership. We are taught to appoint judges and police officers in each of our cities, in order to maintain #LawAndOrder. We are also commanded to follow the rules of our Torah leaders. #RespectDemElders

• When we enter Eretz Yisroel, we are supposed to appoint a king. Even though it’s #GoodToBeTheKing, the king needs to be focused on HaShem and the Jewish people, so he can’t collect a ton of horses, wives, or cars… #TheFrugalRoyal Additionally, the king needs to write two sifrei Torah #DatScribeLife.

• We also learn about the leadership role of the Kohanim #PriestItUp. They don’t receive a specific portion in the land, since HaShem is their portion #GimmeAPieceOfDat.

• The Neviim must be heeded #PraisinPropheticProphets. We have to #TrustTheOneAbove- no fortune telling or magic. Also, we learn about the Ir Miklat, beautiful cities which house Leviim and keep people safe! #SafeCity #Run!!!!

• The parsha ends off with some of the rules of war. We must first offer peace treaties before attacking #AllWeAreSayin is #GivePeaceAChance. We must remain sensitive and caring people and therefore aren’t allowed to destroy fruit trees #BaalTashchit #SeferHaChinuch. We also learn from here about the importance of not being destructive and wasteful, in general.

We are so excited to welcome Coby, Zecharia, & Gavriel Schrier to the CBY Youth family!!!

A Mini-Vort from the Szafranski Table to Yours!

The parsha begins with the famous instruction to place shoftim v’shotrim, judges and police officers, at the gates of our cities. There must be careful enforcement of law and order in our communities! The Chassidic and Mussar masters extend this idea to the gates of our own metaphorical cities... our bodies. We all have gates which permit things and concepts to enter our bodies and minds, namely, our eyes, ears, and mouths. We should establish safeguards and enforcement systems to ensure that we only see appropriate things, hear proper words and music, and consume kosher food and drink in a respectable manner. (Shlah, Shoftim, Derech Chaim 1; Avodas Yisroel of Koznitz, Shoftim, 1; etc.)

For additional mar’eih mekomot, please reach out to Rivka and Yehoshua Szafranski at [email protected].

▪ Harry Blum needs a kidney transplant as soon as possible. Project Renewal is holding a very important Zoom webinar on August 17th at 7:00 pm that will serve as an educational tool on kidney donation generally including the process, but

we also need to spread the word that Harry needs a kidney. Access the webinar here- https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83285754949?pwd=NDd4VGNXbDdjdzd6b3Q3T2RxMmdhUT09. Please spread the word about the webinar within your own networks. To be clear, this event will be informational and—hopefully—inspirational (some of us have attended prior webinars with Renewal and they are beyond inspirational). We will not be soliciting any money or asking for any donations or that any of you become kidney donors. The purpose of this is simply to join and learn about kidney donation. Thank you for helping us spread the word.
