Why is the canal empty? Among other reasons, because that’sthe only way to do maintenance on it, which is what the HughMoore Park and City of Easton workers are doing now.

Vice President of OrganizationalAdvancementCathleen Canevari has joined theDelaware and Lehigh NationalHeritage Corridor as VicePresident of OrganizationalAdvancement. She is responsiblefor developing, implementing,managing, and evaluating theD&L’s development, fundraising,and related communicationsstrategies. She reports to thePresident/Executive Directorand is a member of the D&L’s senior management team. Herposition is responsible for achieving fundraising goals andengaging multiple constituencies in new and ongoingfundraising activities.

Our advancement work will be comprehensive in nature. Wewill be seeking both private and public funding sources, as wellas membership, sponsorship and events. Cathy will lead theorganization’s fundraising efforts to support completing andsustaining the D&L Trail, operating and improving the NationalCanal Museum and its archives, the future of the Josiah White IIand the Lehigh Canal.

Conservation CoordinatorClaire (Wildermuth) Sadlerjoined the Delaware & LehighNational Heritage Corridor asConservation Coordinator in lateSeptember. Claire will beresponsible for a variety ofduties, primarily serving as leadof the Lehigh Valley Greenways,a Conservation Landscape ineastern Pennsylvania. TheGreenways partnership is one of seven state sponsored, largescale landscape protection initiatives that bring together publicand private stakeholders in an organized effort to protect thelandscape and implement locally-driven planning andrevitalization efforts. This partnership strives to linkcommunities with greenways, trails, and outdoor resources, tostrengthen local economies and improve public health, greeninfrastructure and natural resources. She will manage theLehigh Valley Greenways mini-grant program that is designed tohelp implement landscape priorities. In addition, Claire willsupport conservation and stewardship initiatives of theDelaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.

Claire graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH witha degree in Environmental Studies and coursework inconservation, ArcGIS, environmental economic policy andregional planning. Prior to accepting this position, she was a

D&L, which translate to a directquality of life impact in thecommunity• Volunteer your time: getinvolved with D&L programs suchas Trail Tenders, Trail Patrol,Museum Docents & Archives, GetYour Tail on the Trail;• Spread the word: Continuedpromotion and use of the trail willresult in future growth andsustainability of the trail

$2 Million Dollar Grant ApprovedCarbon County received word inNovember that it was approvedfor $2 million to install aprefabricated pedestrian bridgeacross the Lehigh River in JimThorpe.

This bridge will connect the D&L Trail across the Lehigh River tothe towpath in Weissport. The pedestrian bridge at Jim Thorpeis a critical connection linking all five counties of the D&L Trail.The completion of the bridge will create 130 miles of continuoustrail. If all goes as planned, the bridge would be completed inlate 2016.

The footbridge project is one of 56 projects to improvetransportation alternatives using federal funds, saidPennsylvania Department of Transportation secretary Barry J.Schoch.

Bike for the BridgeThe Delaware & Lehigh NationalHeritage Corridor hosted Bikefor the Bridge on Saturday,November 8. Participants, andtheir bikes, were shuttled fromdowntown Jim Thorpe to theirstarting destination by PoconoBiking. Participants had theoption to ride from the BlackDiamond Trailhead to JimThorpe (36 miles) or fromRockport to Jim Thorpe (15miles).

Nearly 200 riders came out to show their support. All proceedsof this event benefit the completion of the D&L Trail andbuilding the pedestrian bridge at Jim Thorpe to connect to theLehigh Canal Towpath and Weissport.

Heritage Half Marathon Run & WalkThe Delaware & Lehigh NationalHeritage Corridor held its 4thAnnual Heritage Half MarathonRun & Walk on Sunday,November 2.

Nearly 800 runners and walkers from 19 different states andSweden completed the race on Sunday morning inNorthampton. It was a bit windy but the temperatures wereideal for long distance running and walking, mostly sunny andabout 47 degrees.

Haunted Hugh Moore ParkWe partnered with the City ofEaston to host a new Halloweenevent: Haunted Hugh MoorePark.

The event featured a ghostlycanal boat ride, traditionalHalloween activities, and a ghost walk based on a local historicalevent. Haunted Hugh Moore Park also featured professionalstoryteller, Judy England-McCarthy, to recall the origin ofHalloween and many of its traditions around a camp fire. Theevent was offered for four nights and sold out each night.

Tales of the Towpath Field TripsWe hosted 16 Bethlehemelementary schools for aneducational field trip at theFreemansburg Canal EducationCenter. The field trip was held for4th grade students fromSeptember 29 to October 17 andit was an extension of the students' Tales of the TowpathCurriculum.

These field trips were designed to teach students about everydaylife on the Lehigh Canal. Students participated in activities thatallowed them to learn how to harness a mule, determine how acanal lock works, and how a grist mill operated. Studentsparticipated in an archaeology dig, took a tour of the heirloomgarden and sampled herbs and vegetables. There were also
