TALENT SPOTTED FOR THE ENGLAND HANDBALL TRIALS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .At Catmose College, students have many opportunities to try a range of sporting activities. One of the sports the PE team has been keen to promote is Handball. We included this sport into lessons before the London 2012 Olympics, however, since the Olympics the interest in Handball has really grown. Due to the high interest, the College linked with the Rutland Handball Club to create a pathway for students to increase their skills and play competitively. One student who joined the club was Nicholas Houghton in Year 11. He attended a county competition along with ten other Catmose College students and was talent spotted for the England Handball trials. He attended the trials in the February holiday and has been asked to go to the next round. We look forward to hearing how he gets on. Well done Nick.

VISITING ARTISTS’ WORKSHOPS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Catmose students are now taking their own work to another level, inspired by a brush with the professionals. Recently the whole of Year 9 got to work alongside artists Debbie Boon, Abi Jackson and Jan Burridge as part of their progression towards Silver Arts Award. Debbie, a painter whose magnificent painting currently graces the Reception area here at the College, gave a master-class on drawing in pastels. Abi, a textile artist who works in recycled and vintage materials to create fabulous fashions, inspired her group with a pop icons project. Meanwhile, Jan had everyone mixing it up with her surreal ceramic figures.

YEAR 11 GCSE MUSIC & FOOD EVENT. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Year 11 GCSE Music and Food Technology groups are holding an event on Wednesday 20 March. This special event will start with sweet and savoury canapés produced by the BTEC Food and Hospitality group at 5.15pm in the College restaurant. Afterwards, the GCSE Music group will perform a selection of musical pieces. The event will begin at 5.30pm in the College theatre, and is expected to conclude at 6.30pm. There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome.

These are online badges that are transferable between social media websites by use of a virtual backpack. So far, our students have been awarded their starter badges as well as Safer Internet Day 2013 badges. For students who have submitted stories to this network and those who have submitted sports reports have received an S2R badge. I would also like to introduce two new bloggers who have been writing some interesting work. The first is Greencupcake (Caitlyn Palmer). She has been blogging about words and their meanings. Here is her blog about Helping - www.makewav.es/blog/483195/helping . My word of the day today is helping. Ever seen an old person step onto the bus but just stayed sitting in your seat? Ever seen a teacher around school struggling with an Ipad trolley but just shoved by, without even giving it a thought? Or seen a cleaner at the end of the day, but instead of waiting, you just push by?

The second blogger is TigerLily001 (Lily-Fleur Jackson) who has been writing some topical reports on Oakham Station and the Horsemeat Crisis. Here is her work on the Horsemeat crisis which has been featured on the Makewaves homepage - www.makewav.es/story/475048/title/horsemeatburgerswhatsthebigdealOver the past few weeks, hundreds of stories have emerged. The topic: Horsemeat burgers. Millions of meat products have been taken from the shelves for fear that the press will make even more of a mockery of shops like Tesco and other well-known supermarkets. Now that Burger King has admitted to serving horsemeat in its burgers, I wonder what other animals have made or will make it into its not so delicious offerings. What’s next - my Lidl pony? Although horsemeat is assumed only to be featured in supermarket products, it is seriously feared that horsemeat has been used in schools and hospital food. Despite this, this claim has still not been proved. The cause is thought to be a criminal association abroad selling cheap meats for a higher amount of money, therefore racking up a massive profit. If the UK was to import contaminated or illegal foods abroad, we would pay the price. But the question still remains. Is horsemeat really bad, or are people just making a mountain out of a molehill?

Educational researchers have found that there is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. In other words, a student who is a good reader is more likely to do well in school and pass exams than a student who is a weak reader. Scott Johnson from the Rugby Football Union came to Catmose College on 21 February to deliver a tag rugby workshop in preparation for a primary school tag rugby tournament that will be held in a few week’s time. The Sports Leaders will deliver warm up sessions to the students prior to a school games tag rugby level 2 tournament.

UNDER 13 GIRLS CRICKET

On Tuesday 5 February, the Year 7 cricket team went to Uppingham Community College for a cricket tournament to qualify for the Leicestershire County Cricket Tournament. Overall, Catmose won and qualified for the tournament on Wednesday 27 February. The girls played extremely well as a team and there were some great individual performances in batting and fielding. Well done to Katie Baines, Eve Orton, Emily Broughton, Zina Cheikh, Isabelle Dooley, Charlotte Allman, Tabitha Woolhouse and Lauren Gear.

TERM 4: WEEK 1 NETBALL REPORT

At Catmose College it is back to the netball season. This week we played Belvoir High School at home. Although the weather was very cold, the Catmose College Girl’s netball team had some great wins. We won four games and drew one game. There were some great perfomances in all teams and I hope we can keep up this winning record over the next four weeks to ensure we gain as many points as possible towards the Melton and Rutland league. Well done to all the girls that took part. Training is Monday 3.30 to 4.45pm.

PRIMARY CROSS-COUNTRY Many thanks to all young sports leaders and students who were involved in the organisation of the inter-primary cross country event on Saturday at Rutland Water. Although cold, it was well supported and without the presence of twenty of our students it would have been difficult to marshal. The successful runners will now represent Rutland at the County Championships in a few week’s time.
