On Tuesday 30 April the year 7 and 9 rounders teams travelled to CBEC for their second match of the term. We only had seven team members in each team, but knew if we applied the correct tactics and supported one another when fielding, we could still win the games. The year 7 team having previously won their last match had a close first innings and found themselves leading by only half a rounder. Through good catching and quick reactions on the posts, CBEC only managed to increase their score by 2½ rounders and we knew that it was certainly a target that we could surpass. Unfortunately Tabitha, Katie and Alice were out earlier on trying to score full rounders when under too much pressure. The rest of the team started to think more tactically and I am pleased to say scored another 5½ rounders giving us a win of 12½ to 9. Team: Eve Orton, Katie Baines, Emily Broughton, Tabitha Woolhouse, Zina Cheikh, Alice Lucas and Alice Weaver The Year 9 team had lost their previous match but after a strong start found themselves in a convincing lead of 8½ rounders to 2 and getting eight of the batting team out before the final bowl. Chelsea , Alice, Fern and Laura were our key scorers, concentrating on getting important half rounders at second base. They continued to apply themselves well and at the end of the match were delighted with their 11-5 win. Well played girls. There were ten schools who were split into three groups. In our first match against Bishop of Herefords we displayed excellent fielding and bowling skills, getting the batters all out before their last over. We had a target of 61 runs to beat and both Tabitha and Emily stepped up to the challenge, giving us a quick 30 runs. We were asked to retire at 62 with two overs to spare. In our next match against Kings College we were disappointed when Emily was run out earlier in her innings and had to use 6 batters to stay in contention. In the end it was only one run that stopped us getting through to the semi-finals. This meant we went through to play for 5th place against Sir Chris Hutton. Again the match could not have been tighter. Sir Chris Hutton batted first and a number of no balls gave them an impressive score of 80 runs. When we went into bat we were reasonably confident that we could win if we stayed focused and went for the runs. Unfortunately an error of judgement meant that Emily Broughton was run out in the first innings. This left the remaining batters to step up to the task of keeping us in with a chance. Charlotte and Zina were our last two batters and despite a valiant effort we could only manage 74 runs, thus giving us 6th place in the Regional Finals. A good effort, especially as we were up against Year 8 students.

Students who took part:Eve Orton, Katie Baines, Emily Broughton, Zina Cheikh, Isabelle Dooley, Charlotte Allman, Tabitha Woolhouse and Lauren Gear.

SUPPORTER TO REPORTER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

For this term, the Makewaves reporters in the electives are focusing on skills relating to sporting journalism by working through the Supporter to Reporter programme. Supporter to Reporter is a sports reporting programme, which turns young people into a Sports Journalist. By making sports reports, reporting from events and helping others, they are learning lots of fantastic skills, for example interviewing, presenting, team work, media making and social media promotion. These are important work place skills, which could help them get a job or a place at a University.

The team’s first task was to undertake an interview with Rutland Radio’s Rob Persani as he was taking part in the London Marathon. We wanted to help Rob promote his chosen charity which is Stamford based Anna’s Hope. The interviews with Rob can be seen at http://bit.ly/18drH9V and http://bit.ly/14GaOIj ‘S2R Medals’ are a new digital way to recognise and demonstrate these skills and the ‘S2R Medals’ can be displayed on their Makewaves reporter pages. For anyone over 13, these Medals can also be displayed on other Social Networks and CV sites using Mozilla Open Badge technology to demonstrate the skills achieved to Employers and Universities. As part of their work, they need to achieve certain goals to enable them to attain S2R Open Badges. So far, we have two student reporters who have achieved their Bronze S2R Journalist Badges, Tom Ameer-Beg www.makewav.es/r/satnav and Callum Smith www.makewav.es/r/calpol99 and by visiting their pages, you can see their digital achievements. As part of Tom’s journey, he and Talek Semmens spent a morning in the College car park interviewing members of International Road racing teams who were taking part in the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic. They interviewed members of the winning team, Team UK Youth – http://bit.ly/10mVTdG and last year’s winning rider, Frenchman Alex Blain - http://bit.ly/12TXg94 as well as member of the Rapha Condor team, Ed Clancy, London 2012 Gold Medalist. Before the race started, they also interviewed people in the centre of Oakham who were waiting for the race to start and asked them why it was important for a race like this to happen in a small town like Oakham - http://bit.ly/10NBl5H The Makewaves reporters have also been busy interviewing the students who went to Ghana. They interviewed them prior to the trip and asked them what they were most looking forward to http://bit.ly/10NBl5H and upon their return, the best part of their trip http://bit.ly/Zv2QOo

We were up against Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire. We had a disappointing start, with the nerves getting the better of us and having to make a last minute change in the 4x1 obstacle race, finishing in 5th position. However, Tabitha Woolhouse and Alice Lucas lifted our spirits, finishing 2nd and 3rd in their 2-lap race. A good run again by the girls and excellent batten changes gave us another 2nd position in the 8-lap paarlauf. Holly Imison came 3rd in the 4-lap race and Zina Cheikh, Charlotte Allman and Georgia Whittemore helped the relay team come a close 4th. Emily Rose Town came 3rd in the speed bounces. Overall we finished 5th, only 6 points away from 4th and 8 points from 3rd position. Although the girls were disappointed, the final score reflected how close the competition was and hopefully we will come back fighting next year.

Still 5th in the East Midlands is something they should be proud of and definitely something we can build on.

Students who took part:Tabitha Woolhouse, Alice Lucas, Zina Cheikh, Charlotte Allman, Georgia Whittimore, Emily Rose Town and Holly Imison.
