A Message from our leadership
Check out Kim’s message in the next issue of the G.R.A.P.Evine
If May was the month of ‘Mom’, then June is most certainly the month of ‘Dad’…
As our G.R.A.P.E. calendar year comes to a close, we still have a few great casual networking events that are being
held this summer. The first falls on Father’s Day! June 20th we will again be gathering for an outdoor breakfast at
The Brightonian Nursing & Rehabilitation at 1919 Elmwood Avenue. Our second summer event is a luncheon and
takes us to the west side. Elderwood of Lakeside at Brockport has graciously offered to host on July 24th at 170
West Avenue. Last, but not least, is our final breakfast networking event of the summer, being held at The
Woodlands at Stonebrook on August 15 at 10 Stonebrook Drive. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention, one last
time, our biggest fundraising event of the year… the Annual Gala, being held on June 14th at Eagle Vale. I’m sure
with all of the planning and hard work of the Annual Gala Committee and many others, it will be another huge
success!
As I mentioned above, Father’s Day is June 20th. While I encourage all of you to tell those special men in your lives
who are fathers, ‘Happy Father’s Day’ we often forget that the elderly we interact with, who reside in our buildings,
or who are our clients, were once young men and new fathers. I hope that everyone can reflect on the holiday and
tell some wonderful father we know, Happy Father’s Day!
Enjoy the warm weather and have a safe and
healthy summer!
Connie

In The Spotlight
Sue Crounse
By Lisa Izzo
Sue Crounse joined G.R.A.P.E. when she became the
Marketing Manager at Heathwood Assisted Living. The
company had been a member for years –“I just started
attending events, and it grew from there.”
Over time and after attending Senior Housing Alliance, the
value of being a committee member became clear. When the
opportunity presented itself, Sue did not hesitate. She joined
the Elderpages Committee because, “Being on the housing
side of senior care, you see a huge knowledge gap between
what senior housing is and what people perceive it to be.”
The Senior Housing Alliance and Elderpages Committee
ensure that the most current information is available to those
who serve the elder population. That was something she
wanted to participate in.
Sue’s belief in G.R.A.P.E. comes from the resources it pro-
vides to Rochester’s senior population. “Being plugged in is
the best way to stay informed of the ever-growing services
available to our senior population.”
Sue attends PEN, and supports the Alzheimer’s Association
and LifeSpan. She is also a member of the Marketing and
Public Relations Society, and she has her PMPC (Project
Management Certification).
When Sue isn’t working at Heathwood or helping one of the
other organizations she supports, “I basically spend my
whole life driving my kids to sports and other activities.
Wouldn’t trade it for the world!”
Her greatest achievement is her family, hands down.
“Married my childhood sweetheart, built a family together.
We are blessed.”
Something people might not expect about Sue is that she is
obsessed with all things true crime and Dr. Pimple Popper.

5 Considerations Before Buying A Hearing Aid By Lisa Tseng, MD
Hearing loss is the third most common chronic condition among older Americans, affecting more than 48 million people. Yet more than 85 percent of people who could benefit from using a hearing aid do not actually use them, often because of cost or lack of access to a hearing
health professional. This has serious consequences. Hearing loss can affect a person’s ability to stay connected to friends and family, contributing to social isolation, lower earnings and higher risk of falls, according to the National Institute of Health and various published studies.
Before purchasing a hearing aid, there are many important factors to consider. Here are five tips when evaluating hearing aids:
1. Look for these key features:
Custom-programming—the sound processor inside the hearing aid is programmed to your
hearing test results.
Automatic gain control allows you to hear soft sounds while keeping loud noises at a
comfortable level.
Directional processing enhances the sounds in front of you while reducing distracting
background noise beside and behind you.
Feedback manager allows for greater amplification while minimizing whistling.
Noise reduction improves listening comfort and speech intelligibility by reducing distracting
environmental noise such as fans or motors.
Telecoil connects to telephones, hearing loops, neck loops and wireless systems.
2. Have reasonable expectations. Hearing aids can’t completely restore normal hearing or
eliminate all background noise, but they can improve the quality of life for users by amplifying soft sounds and reducing loud background noises. If you are new to hearing aids, it can take a
few weeks before you are completely comfortable with them. Be patient as you adjust to hear-ing sounds you may not have heard in a long time.
3. Evaluate new options. Some new companies are changing the way hearing aids are sold, helping to bring down costs. By unbundling the price of the device from additional, often
unneeded services, people are able to purchase high-quality, custom-programmed hearing aids for less than $1,000 per device—a savings of 60 percent or more compared to devices sold through traditional channels. As technology has improved, fewer visits are needed because the
programming has become more precise. 4. Consider other hearing products. In conjunction with hearing aids, there are assistive
listening devices that can remove distracting background noise and, effectively, bring the relevant sound closer to the user. Devices such as neck loops, wireless systems or loops that
can be installed in rooms help transmit sounds directly to people wearing hearing aids, greatly improving the sound quality and clarity, especially when listening at a distance.
5. Check with your insurance plan. Some insurance plans, including employer-sponsored and Medicare Advantage plans, now cover some or all of the cost of hearing aids, helping to make treatment and support more affordable. Find out what coverage is available to you.
By following the above tips, you can make more informed decisions about improving their
hearing, relationships and quality of life.
