The Practice of English Language Teaching

How to… Series 10 TiTLES

“The How to… series are not books you tend to lend; you’ll do well to get them back. If you wonder why, get yourself to an ELT bookstore and take a peek.” ELT Review

Internationally successful authors and teacher trainers have written these practical guides to the theories and classroom implementation of English Language Teaching.

All major topics from the ELT classroom are covered including Vocabulary, Technology, Exams and Business English.

Task fi les at the back of each book help teachers understand their subject and put into practice what they have studied.

“…a cornerstone for all English language teachers and trainers. It has hammered a post in the ground as to the current thinking and practice in English language teaching.” ESU Judges

How does an English Language teacher (ELT) organise their class, present activities, explain grammar and functions of the English language and then assess and support students to be confi dent in using English?

This book answers the above questions and provides a sound background to understand the key responsibilities of an ELT.

The DVD contains whole lesson examples and teacher interviews about the skills they use to be a successful ELT.

NO COPyINg, SINgLE OR MULTIPLE, OF VIDEO CASSETTES IS PERMITTED.

The law allows for a reader to make a single copy of part of a book for purposes of private study. It does not allow the copying of entire books or the making of multiple copies of extracts.

Under no circumstances may schools photocopy materials for use in self-access centres, unless they have registered with CLA or an associated licensing agency and allow / use photocopying strictly in accordance with their regulations. If a school wishes to have multiple copies of a part of a book in a self-access centre, then it must purchase the necessary number of printed books. There is no formal objection to schools physically cutting printed texts into parts and reassembling them in a way that seems appropriate, providing the books or parts of books are not then resold. It is not, however, a practice we would recommend.

In the case of audio recordings, it is permissible for a school to make a copy of an audio tape, keeping the original as a back-up. Only one copy may exist at any one time. A school may copy diff erent parts of an original audio tape onto several cassettes, providing that no part of the original exists in more than one copy at any one time. Therefore, if a school wishes to have three copies of one part of an audio tape, it must have three originals.

“what I like most about teaching English is that you never stop learning yourself, both in terms of language competence and teaching skills, which makes you feel young… Moreover, performing so many different roles in the classroom, not only of a communicator, manager, conveyor of information but also of a role-model, surrogate parent etc. I feel I’m needed. In short, for me teaching English is not just a job, it’s a way of living. I wouldn’t trade it for any other profession.”
