After being named Iowa’s Teacher of the Year in October, Sarah learned in January that she was one of four finalists for the national award. In March she traveled to Washington, D.C. for interviews and presentations with representatives of 15 educational organizations. Sarah and her family left for D.C. again the week of April 26th for a week of recognition activities. In addition to the White House presentation of the

In TouchThe 2009-10 school year is nearing

completion. I want to take this opportunity to thank our parents and the greater Johnston community for your continued support of the students and staff in the Johnston Schools. This support helps provide many outstanding educational opportunities for our young people.

The district has continued to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students. During this school year, the Johnston students have excelled in the classroom and in activities. Overall results on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development shows that Johnston students performed in the upper fifteen percent of all students in the nation and continue to rank near the top of all districts in the state of Iowa. Johnston students have also excelled in music, athletics, mock trial and many other activities. Students in the Johnston Schools also continue to provide thousands of hours of community service in helping various organizations and individuals.

While we strive to provide success for each student, we are cognizant of the fact that there is still ample room for improvement. We must continue to reduce the achievement gaps that currently exist between the various subgroups of students who attend our schools. The district is committed to providing high levels of learning for all students.

As we end the school year, the district is in the midst of reducing $1.6 million from the operating budget for next year. Various reductions will need to take place next year and class size may be affected to some degree, however, academic achievement and instruction should have minimal impact from the anticipated reductions. While we will be experiencing some financial stress during the next couple of years, the expectations we have for increased achievement and instructional effectiveness remain unchanged.

Facilities planning continues to be a priority in the district. A Facilities Study Committee comprised of forty-five district stakeholders is busy developing an updated

ten-year plan for additional facilities. A report will be provided to the Board in June. Construction will begin this summer on the expansion and renovation of Lawson Elementary School. Updates on this committee and others are available on the district Web site.

The Johnston Community School District was honored this year to have Sarah Brown Wessling selected as the 2010 National Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Wessling’s passion for teaching and learning is evident in the positive environment she has created not only in the classroom, but also in the Johnston community. Congratulations to Mrs. Wessling for the many contributions she has made to JHS and our district.

We are excited about the 2010-11 school year. The staff and administration are busy preparing for a projected increase of 150-200 new students next year. Our incoming kindergarten class could reach 500 students next fall. We are fortunate to be experiencing student growth which is very beneficial to the district, especially in a time when state budgets and economic factors are difficult. We are constantly evaluating all of our operations in the district to ensure the most effective and efficient delivery of programs and services possible.

As we end the current year, we want to say thank you to our 2010 graduating seniors. We also want to recognize those staff members who will be retiring from service in Johnston. We appreciate the many contributions they have made to our schools and community and wish them well in all of their future plans.

I hope this school year has been a successful one for our students and their families. We appreciate your continued support. We also value your opinions, ideas, suggestions and concerns. Please feel free to contact me at any time about how we might better serve our students, parents and community.

Have a great summer!

Standardized tests are one means of assessment used in the district. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Test of Educational Development (ITED) are assessments used annually in the Johnston Community School District. Grades 2-8 take the ITBS and grades 9-11 take the ITED test. The results from these tests are also used for No Child Left Behind requirements.

Johnston ranks above the national average in reading, math and science. For example, Johnston eighth graders performed at the 92nd percentile in reading, which means more than 91% of the schools in the nation had lower scores. In math, Johnston eighth graders ranked in the 98th percentile, which means 97% of the schools scored lower. Percentile rankings are just one of multiple ways staff reviews student learning trends in Johnston. Other assessment trends staff review are individual student growth, growth of number of students who are proficient and number of students moving to higher levels of achievement.

State rules require that all student athletes have a physical examination before starting athletic practices each year.

The Johnston Booster Club has arranged for volunteer physicians to provide screening of athletic physicals as a fundraiser. This will satisfy the requirements for athletic physical exams, but should not be considered as taking the place of an ongoing relationship with your personal physician. Any problems identified will be referred to your personal physician.

The exams will take place at the Johnston High School main offices on July 24, 2010 from 9:00-11:00 a,m. The cost of the exam is $50 and all proceeds will go to the Johnston Booster Club, thus back to the student athlete.

At your discretion, the physical can be performed by your physician. Have him/her complete the form and return it to the Activities Office, P.O. Box 10, Johnston, IA 50131.

Please complete the information on the physical form and bring with you on July 25 (there will be forms available). Be sure to complete the insurance waiver information also on the back of the physical form.

We are hoping for an outstanding turnout. If you have any questions, please contact the Johnston Athletic Office at 278-2407.

Messages may also be sent to email addresses. The calls and emails are sent simultaneously to the intended audience: parent, staff, or both depending on the situation.

A letter was sent to parents of JCSD students in early April. This letter provided an overview of the notification system and requested that they be sure to update their registration information so that correct information can be pulled from Infinite Campus. Parents that have not returned their registration materials are asked to do so as soon as possible.

“My favorite memories include: those students who struggled to graduate, but made it, a ‘thank you’ from a student or parent, a student figures out that they CAN do it in spite of their circumstances, learning that a former student who struggled has a happy, productive life.

I plan to pursue interests that I haven’t had much time for – photography, vintage jewelry, antiquing, creating art, gardening, ETC!

I hope to find a part-time position which will provide an opportunity for me to stay connected with young people, while allowing me the time to pursue my interests and the items on my ‘Bucket List.’

One item on my Bucket List – enjoy a cup of coffee on my deck at Clear Lake on the first day of school.”

“There was always a friendly and warm atmosphere with the “Busby gang.’ I will always remember being in the portables next to Mr. Donahue and the trip that we took with students to France in the summer of 2005. That trip was educational, beautiful and fun at the same time. I will never forget the people who went with us and all the fun we had. I guess I will never forget coming down from Mt. Blanc…that might be the most memorable part of the trip.

I may do some substituting, but I want to take some trips too. My husband and I have some friends who had lived in Australia for 20 years. They want us to go there with them for a vacation. I have wanted to go there for the last 5 years, but we couldn’t go because I wanted to spend about a month there.

We would also like to go to some bowl games too.

Our daughter has two children. They are our pride and joy so we will have more time to spend with them. Our son who lives in Minneapolis, often wants us to come there for different weekend events during the year. Now we can take those weekend trips to see him.”

“Teaching art has been my dream job. Every day I would pinch myself to see if this experience was real. It has been exciting and always challenging to teach middle school students, but I couldn’t have done it without my wonderful, always positive, co-workers. I will miss that daily interaction with my peers, but I know I can reconnect at Panera on Merle Hay or substitute, which seems to be popular among the local retirees.

My most memorable events were chaperoning the school dances when I was a Student Council advisor. Watching young teenagers in action was always entertaining.

Another memory was watching all the budding young artists in my class and then hearing from them years later.

I always felt you had to be a little crazy to teach middle school but really it was what kept me young.

I plan to walk everyday and wave at the people leaving for work…including my husband. I want reconnect with creating and advocating for the arts. I plan to travel and stay longer; especially at my favorite places like Colorado, Oregon and Florida. This summer my husband and I are taking a ten-day rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with some friends.

I hope to take cooking lessons and become a sous chef to my youngest daughter when she opens her first restaurant. I am looking forward to being a grandma someday and making a difference as a volunteer somewhere different.”

Our thanks, best wishes to these retirees

“Everyday with the team is a special memory. I will miss everyone, that is why I would like to stay on as a sub.”

Elaine said that she has no exciting plans for when she retires except to “slow it up a little.”

I have had a great 10 years working for the Buildings & Grounds Department and another few driving for Transportation. I will leave with lots of memories of driving and cleaning buses, keeping the custodians stocked with supplies, parts and subs, finding the lost items in the district, taking care of Tim and Steve, and helping to come up with an answer to the many questions that come my way so others can get their jobs done. It has been a great ride working with so many nice and talented people. I love my job and I know I am going to miss all the people I work with.”

George plans to take a Caribbean cruise in June with his wife, Cheryl and have more time to spend with his family. His son, Quinn, and wife, Mia, have one girl and another baby due in August.

Beginning next school year, pick-up and drop-off points for bus students will be adjusted. Currently, over fifty percent of all students are picked up and/or dropped off within 100 feet or less of their residence and eighty percent of all students riding the bus are picked up or dropped off within 300 feet of their residence. The State of Iowa only requires that all students be picked up or dropped off within ¾ of a mile or 3750 feet from their residence.

Due to increasing student enrollment, there is a continued need for additional bus routes each year. While looking to keep students’ walking at a reasonable distance, the district will be consolidating bus stops by implementing more “neighborhood” pick-up and drop-off points. Beginning next fall, elementary students’ pick-up and drop-off points will be within an average 600 feet of their residence. Secondary bus stops will be within

an average 800 feet of residences. This transition will basically allow the bus stops to remain the same from year to year. The adjusted bus stops will also provide for more consistent route times for students and families.

Annual transportation costs related to student busing will exceed $2.5 million next year. The district will continue to look for ways to reduce overall transportation costs without compromising student safety.

Look for more specific information regarding student busing in your back-to-school information. The district transportation office will also be providing more information this summer and fall. Should you have questions or need more information, please contact the transportation office at 278-8149 or district office at 278-0470.

We thank our board members for their service!

In an effort to “go green” the Johnston Board of Education will soon begin to use an online communication program that will allow them to hold their meeting with the use of very little paper, if any at all. Agendas will be posted on the Web site via eBoard, where all will be able to view the upcoming board agenda, attachments or other documentation. During the meeting, each board member will have a laptop to view agenda items, documents and to keep their own notes. The public will view the items and documents being discussed via a screen during the meeting.

Twenty-four hours prior to a board meeting, the agenda will be available online. The public will be able to view the agenda and other documentation prior to the meeting, during the meeting and/or after the meeting.

The May board meetings will be transitional meetings where the board will utilize both the computer and paper copies, with little/no paper beginning in June.

The district Web site (www.johnston.k12.ia.us) will have a link under the Board of Education for agendas and by following those links anyone can access upcoming agendas.

Heidbreder and the 9th Grade Band have been selected to perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention May 13-14 of this year. This is an amazing accomplishment as they only select six bands to perform at this event. These ensembles are selected from 1A-4A schools and some of the finest bands apply. Bands submit CD’s for consideration and a committee of 6-12 grade directors select the bands.

Congratulations to Pat Kearney and the JHS Jazz Syndicate (Jazz I) who has been invited to be the featured Jazz Ensemble at the 2010 Iowa Bandmaster’s Conference in May. The band was the only high school jazz band invited to perform. The band will perform on May 13 at 8 p.m. at the Des Moines Marriott. This is in addition to the band’s invitation to play at the Jazz Education Network national conference in May.

Congratulations to the JMS 9th Grade Band! The 9th Grade Concert Band has been invited to perform at

the 2010 Iowa Bandmaster’s Association Conference in May. The band was selected based on an audition CD in a “blind” audition process. Only one class 3A/4A middle school band is selected for this honor every year; selection to perform at the state convention is regarded as the highest honor bestowed upon a school band in the state of Iowa.

Power’d - Grades 2-6In a secret lab, a mysterious scientist has been investigating how to power robotic creatures in the Power’d module. The scientist requests the help of participants to explore new types of energy to help power the robotic creatures. Children spend the week building, powering, and exploring the capabilities of their own fantasy creatures by investigating wind, solar, and hydro power. Children explore how they can light an LED with a small fan, waterwheels, and lemons. They also create creatures made from everyday materials by up-cycling that will wiggle using motors and batteries to create circuits.

Hatched - Grades 2-6The Hatched module uses the concept of online virtual worlds to relay economics solutions to given problems! The daily activities have children creating, buying, and selling to understand the role of economics in the world. Imagination, creative problem solving, and economic principles lead children to create a thriving virtual world for their self-created avatars and other inhabitants of the world. During the week, children work in teams to create a water system, as well as items for the Hatched world’s residents. Using marketplaces and Hatched money, their created items are bought and sold between teams.

SMArt: Science, Math & Art - Grades 2-6The SMArt: Science, Math & Art module illustrates the beauty of patterns in mathematics. Imagination, creative problem solving, and mathematical solutions are fostered as children recreate the beautiful math of Pattern Kingdom! This module uses the mathematical fields of tesselations, topology, minimal

surfaces, fractals, and angles to demonstrate that math is a subject involving some of the basic questions and areas of our lives. During the week, children work to restore the love of mathematics that the Pattern Kingdom’s residents have forgotten by introducing them to some of the more little known areas that help to make mathematics a language that speaks to us.

I Can Invent III - Grades 2-6The I Can Invent III module illustrates the joys (and frustrations) that real inventors face during the process of creating totally new inventions. Creative problem solving is fostered as children imagine and assemble the unthinkable! Younger children create fantasy inventions using pieces and parts of broken appliances and other recyclable materials. They further explore the process of invention as they market their inventions and apply for (and even receive) mock patents. Older children work in teams to build complicated, multi-step machines that solve a challenge. A participant favorite, children of all ages find this module incredibly challenging and exciting!

Global Games - Grades 2-6The Global Games module transports children across the globe to explore games! Children will discover the link between the games of ancient civilizations and the sports of this generation. Children will be challenged to create lacross sticks, dice and soccer balls from found materials, just like ancient cultures used the materials they had to create games, and how even now, found objects can be used to create new challenging games. Children will use strategy and teamwork to play these games with new spins. Children will create new games to place in a time capsule for future generations.
