PARENT / STUDENT HANDBOOK 2015/16

GENERAL CONSERVATORY INFORMATIONEncore Jr./Sr. High School for the performing and visual arts is a tuition free, public arts school. Whatthis means is every student that is enrolled at Encore, should have an interest and a passion for somesector of the arts. It is a condition of enrollment that every student auditions to be placed within andarts conservatory or courses that will develop them to become a conservatory arts student.

Students that are passionate about a facet of the arts taught at Encore but have no training will beplaced in pre conservatory classes to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a conservatorystudent. The commitment for non conservatory classes is not as strenuous as conservatory classesas they do not perform as often as conservatories do. Generally, pre conservatory classes will onlyperform at annual or semi annual recitals.

As an art school, it is the expectation for students that they will be actively involved within theirconservatory. This includes after school rehearsals, Saturday performances, and other commitmentsthat fall outside of the scope of a regular school day. This helps feed the passion of the student withinthe arts programs and helps give the students the best training possible. In conservatory classes, it isa requirement to take part in the after school hours as part of their overall grade in the class.

WHAT CONSERVATORIES ARE OFFERED?Every arts class that is offered on campus either prepares students for a conservatory class or is apart of a conservatory. However, not every class is considered a conservatory.ART - Our arts conservatory covers both visual and technical arts programs. This conservatorycombines both traditional methods of art with technical programs such as radio programming, costume design, computer design, and photography.

CIRQUE ACROBATICS - This is our newest conservatory. Classes started in 2010and the conservatory is offered for the first time in 2012. This includes circus, ground arts, aerialist, and gymnastics.DANCE - Our dance program includes ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical as fundamental techniqueclasses. These programs are enhanced by courses that include other types of dance, choreography, and productions.

THEATER/DRAMA - Theater helps build actors. In this conservatory, studentsparticipate in dramas, technical aspects of the theater, acting, and Shakespeare. These studentstake part in festivals and plays that take part over the course of the year.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - Musicians at Encore learn the fundamentals of reading andplaying music. Many students have received scholarships and the honor of first chair in honor bandbased on their musicianship. A variety of bands are available as well as courses in both piano andguitar.

VOICE - Singers learn how to sing in many styles by becoming a part of the vocalmusic conservatory. Several choirs and solo classes are available. Students are taught musictheory and how to sight read music.

I WAS LEVELED AT PRE CONSERVATORY.WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

As a pre conservatory class, you will be taught the mandatory techniques and basics within yourdiscipline BEFORE you enter the rigor of a conservatory class. Some people will learn quickly andfly through pre conservatory classes into the conservatory. For others, it may take a long time to beable to venture out of the pre conservatory classes. As a pre conservatory student, it isessential to commit to do your best and put forth the extra effort and time to master techniquesbefore you move into a conservatory. In many cases, it is a safety measure that certain rubrics aremet before you are moved into a conservatory class.

Pre conservatory classes move at a pace that is conducive to learning something new. Technicalaspects within the discipline will be broken down and explained in more detail so students can gain abetter understanding of their art. Terminology plays a big role in pre conservatory so, in the event ofa master class later, students will be able to understand a fast-paced class that would be commonfor conservatory students.

In many cases, students that have prior training will still be placed in a pre conservatory class. Thereason for this is to make sure that the student can pass the Encore rubrics set for each level withinthe conservatory classes before they are placed within a conservatory.

In the arts realm of Encore, just because you completed a course with a good passing grade will notdetermine your move into conservatory or a higher level. Each year, all students have to take part inarts assessments that will determine which level they will be at for the following school year. Theseassessment tests are taken very seriously and are mandatory for all students.

Grades within an arts class are generally given according to participation, completion of assignments, and enthusiasm within the course. Level changes are based on mastery within a discipline. Forstudents that do not pass the assessment tests for a level change, they will be invited to retake thecourse the following year. This does not suggest that the student has failed, this merely gives eachindividual student the opportunity to master their craft before moving into the next level. Rubrics mustbe attained before a student can move on regardless of time spent within the course.

PARENT / STUDENT HANDBOOK 2015/1

CONSERVATORYWhen you are a student within an arts conservatory, you will receive a conservatory agreement at thebeginning of each school year. This will outline basic event dates, commitment structure, expectations of a conservatory student, and an agreement that will need to be signed by both thestudent and the parent.

FUNDRAISERSEvery conservatory will have at least one fundraiser each year to help fund the expansion of equipment, field trips, uniforms, and other funding needs within that discipline. Students can either fundraise ordonate based on ability. At Encore, fundraisers must account for the $500 per student shortfallthat we must absorb to fund all of the activities and courses that we offer to our students above ourregular funding sources.

GENERAL INFORMATIONThe average student has three electives within their block schedule.

A student that has multiple interests is encouraged to “major” in one discipline (two classes within thesame conservatory) and “minor” in a second (one class in another conservatory.)

Conservatory participation rotates in major productions. If a student takes part in one conservatory, productions will rotate rather than working on back to back productions.

Many conservatories have prerequisite classes that must be taken to learn the fundamentals within adiscipline. These prerequisites are part of completing a full spectrum of training within a single discipline.

COMMITMENTS & BLACKOUT REHEARSALSAll students on campus are required to put forth extra effort and extra time to be a successful memberof an arts conservatory.

For all productions, students are required to attend two weeks of blackout rehearsals prior to the showopening. These blackout rehearsals are MANDATORY and affect conservatory grades withinconservatory classes. Failure to attend all blackout rehearsals will remove a student from a production. When a student is removed from a conservatory class production, the class grade is affected. All castmembers are needed to perfect the productions before opening night. After school practices prior toblackout also occur, usually twice per week. (Plan ahead by packing a snack/meal as these rehearsalsmay go into the evening!)

Visual art students are required to help set up art shows, set painting, and competitions.Photographers will be responsible for taking photos during after school events.

All training, whether a student is pre conservatory or advanced will require students to adhere to thevarious time demands, uniform policies, and expectations as a result of being within a specificconservatory.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITYStudents of Encore are required to maintain passing grades in ALL of their classes in order toparticipate in their conservatory or team events. When a student is selected to participate in an event, a grade check is run by the advisor ordirector to make sure that the student is academically eligible.Periodically, the director or advisor will run additional grade checks to make sure that thestudent remains academically eligible.ON THE DAY OF OR THE DAY BEFORE THE EVENT - Advisors and directors are requiredto run a final grade check. If a student has become academically ineligible by this time, theywill be removed from the show. It is not relevant as to what role is being played by the student.Encore has replaced leading roles and have canceled shows based on academic ineligibility.

ACADEMICELIGIBILITY MEANS2.0 GPA AND NO F’S

ATTENDANCEELIGIBILITY

It is crucial for the success of astudent at Encore both academicallyand in the arts departments to attendschool every day. With Encore’s fullcalendar and block scheduling, miss

a day miss a lot.

When a student auditions for aprinciple role on any production or istrying out for any team, they cannothave missed more than five school

days in the last semester. If thestudent has missed more than fivedays in a semester, the student is

ineligible to participate until thefollowing term.

Directors of productions areresponsible for clearing a principlestudent in a production during the

audition process.

DID YOU KNOW?YOU CANNOT MISS A DAY OF

SCHOOL, THEN PARTICIPATE IN ANAFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY.

This includes rehearsals, shows, dances, field trips, mock trial, concerts, spellingbees, and any other school activity thattakes place outside of school hours. We

know the schedule is hectic, but your firstcommitment is to your regular school day.

THE LETTERMAN’S JACKETEarning a letter for a letterman’s jacket is a special distinction that shows school achievement and spirit.Students of Encore can earn one letter “E”. Once they have earned the letter, a jacket can bepurchased from the Student Store. Encore’s letterman’s jackets come black with white sleeves and redpiping. The jackets come plain, but students can design and pay to have their jackets embroidered, embellished, and covered with school related patches. The letter gives the distinction ofaccomplishment. There is a separate patch that can be sewn on or around the letter for each area thata letter is earned in. Once a student has earned a single patch, they can then earn a service bar foradditional years that the letter distinction is earned. Letters can only be earned by students grades 9through 12.

GRADUATING FROM ENCOREWITH AN ARTS DISTINCTION

Encore offers not only a diploma at high school graduation letting the world know that you havecompleted your high school career, but also a conservatory certificate. This distinction is reserved forstudents that have auditioned to become part of an arts conservatory, completed the necessarycoursework, participated in the required extra events, and created and submitted a portfolio in theirdiscipline prior to graduation. This is an elite distinction that requires a minimum of 200 after schoolhours to be completed each year. It is a four year program. Upon completion of an arts certificationat Encore, a student earns the distinction of wearing a special cord at graduation, walking with honors, and receiving a separate certificate during the graduation ceremony. The student’s distinct certificationis also placed on their school transcripts.

Students wishing to participate in the conservatory certification program should use the following pagesto keep track of where they sit in the certification process. Certification does not mean that a studenthas taken a bunch of classes within an arts discipline that they enjoy. It means that they have showna level of commitment and distinction that will place them into a level of mastery of their arts disciplineupon graduation.

This certification is not easy to acquire. Many students that are placed within a conservatory will notearn arts certification. Certification means that the student has been fully immersed in that artsdiscipline throughout their entire arts career at Encore.
