Volume 13, No. 2 Fall, 2009 Lincoln High School Alumni Association Constitution Alumni Set Up Legacy “Emilie, Louis, Naomi, Callie, Eugene, and Max’s gift to upcoming citizens was their foresight in setting up this organization to pass onto future Constitution Team graduates, who in turn will continue this legacy.” The ultimate achievement of any education is to put one’s knowledge into action. Before leaving Lincoln, five Constitution team alumni have achieved this accomplishment. They decided to take what they have learned and turn this knowledge into action for the benefit of legal immigrants who hope to attain U.S. citizenship. Their legacy is a non-profit student run organization called Mission: Citizen, the brain child of five motivated students: Emilie Segura, Louis Wheatley, Naomi Dann, Callie King-Guffey, and Eugene Chung. In addition, these remarkable students have memorized the entire U.S. Constitution. This feat is astonishing but no one should be surprised, because this is what Lincoln produces: engaged, active, caring and productive citizens. The objective of Mission: Citizen is to “encourage civic engagement through citizen education” and “to help legal immigrants not only pass the citizenship test, but also encourage active participation in all levels of our democracy once citizenship is obtained.” This program offers a free 8-week class (plus tutoring) to all eligible applicants. The curriculum is taught by the five founding students (sounds like our forefathers) and a newly added member, Max Dickinson. On top of their “extensive knowledge of U.S. History and Constitutional Law” they have completed “the USCIS certified citizenship education course.” Their credentials also include fluency in seven languages: Spanish, French, Korean, German, Czech, Italian, and Chinese. Several of these students are first generation Americans whose parents immigrated to the United States. Consequently, they understand the language barriers that prevent immigrants from applying for citizenship. The curriculum, developed by the founders, covers U.S. history, geography, structure of government, civil rights, and other basic concepts. It is designed to cover the concepts necessary to pass all components of the naturalization exam, but go more in depth than required for the test so that graduates of the program truly understand the importance of civic engagement and are equipped to become active citizens. An important element of Mission: Citizen’s curriculum and teaching method is the emphasis on practical knowledge and experience. With a “hands-on” approach, students will learn basic civic skills such as registering to vote, writing letters to representative’s, participating in community service and speaking at public forums. Furthermore, interactive discussion with teachers will reinforce the concepts as well as build a student’s confidence in preparation for the often- intimidating oral portion of the naturalization exam. Furthermore, these students learned far more than the Constitution. During the process of forming their non-profit they implemented real life skills, such as what it takes to open a small business. Emilie, Louis, Naomi, Callie, Eugene, and Max’s gift to upcoming citizens was their foresight in setting up this organization to pass onto future ConstitutionTeam graduates, who in turn will continue this legacy. These students are not yet official Lincoln alumni but they have already set up their bequest to the Lincoln High School community. Additionally, these students donate their time and resources, and would appreciate contributions to “fund class materials, field trips and other activities that enhance the learning environment.” Perhaps you have time and a specific skill you would like to offer or simply volunteer and help in some capacity. A nod of encouragement or a contribution from Lincoln Alumni would show these students we care. Mission: Citizen will file for 501(c) 3 status with the IRS and they expect to be tax exempt in spring 2010. Currently, Mercy Corps Northwest financially houses this project. As a result, donations of support will be tax deductible. For further information, please contact Mission: Citizen at (503) 888.0007 or [email protected]. n MISSION CITIZEN I T’S MORE THAN THE TEST WE PREPARE FOR CITIZENSHIP

I decided to use this space to reflect on my Lincoln High School experience. High School has tremendous influence on our formative years and for students these years help determine our outlook on life. Personal relationships can destroy a successful High School experience and many students do not want to be involved with their former school as a result. I was shy, not outstanding in any way and mostly blended in with the status quo. There were no indicators that I would be a successful goal oriented professional (which I am not). I remember experiencing depression, anxiety and much insecurity. But I also remember trying to find a niche; whether it was drama, band, student government, clubs or athletics. I spent many hours volunteering hoping that a void I felt would be filled. This involvement is what has shaped me over the years. When my children entered Lincoln I had developed a whole new perspective and found myself

once again heavily involved with volunteer work: campus clean up, Boosters, sport teams and chaperoning (much to my children’s dismay). Every year there are new faces that enter Lincoln but despite new populations of students some things do not change. Most everyone experiences insecurity, doubt and a need to fit in. As alumni, we can sift through our memories and in some way relate to current students. Issues change but remain the same; from wars, the depression, job loss, future worries to the continual budget cuts that never go away. Students are students regardless of recession, climate change, and societal issues. Think of ‘you’, the alumni association, and Lincoln students as the village and ponder on the saying: “it takes a village to raise a child.” Lincoln can use your help and help comes in all sizes. As another saying goes: “every little bit helps.” n Wishing you a great fall and stay well!Leslie McClung Costandi, class of 1975

From the Past . . .The CrowdAside from getting an education, our main reason for coming to Lincoln is to mingle in the crowd…to see our friends and have fun…to be a part of something…to belong.

In a crowd we conform to others’ ideas. Then at times we need to escape all the hassles of the Crowd and just be alone for awhile…But it isn’t long before we come back to our friends…our teachers…to the old “Crowd”.–Takenfromthe1975LincolnHighSchoolYearbook.
