Consumer Safety Campaign Press Release American Cleaning Institute Launches KEY Pledge Laundry Safety

Developed in response to unintended exposures by children 5 and younger to concentrated liquid laundry packets reported to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC)

Campaign provides consumer education and awareness for single-load liquid laundry packets and

encourages consumers to “Be the KEY” to a safe laundry room and routine WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 27 2013) – The American Cleaning Institute (ACI), representing producers of

household cleaning products, has launched the KEY Pledge consumer safety education campaign in tandem with

National Safety Month. The program is a multi-platform educational campaign aimed to help equip consumers with

the education and awareness surrounding the proper usage, storage and handling of the new laundry product

form, single-load liquid laundry packets.

Single-load liquid laundry packets have become widely available over the past couple of years—millions of

consumers have found these packets to be an easy and convenient way to get their laundry done efficiently and

effectively. However, it’s important to remember these powerful packets contain highly concentrated detergent and

require the same discipline as common household cleaning products when it comes to safely using, handling and

storing.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), in 2014, poison centers received

reports of over 11,000 unintended exposures to highly-concentrated packets of laundry detergent by children 5

and younger.

It is vital for parents and caregivers to keep single-load liquid laundry packets away from children to help prevent

the risk of serious injury from ingestion or exposure to eyes. Education and awareness can help prevent these

injuries, especially when it comes to properly using the packets and securing them safely and securely. Keep the

following safety reminders top of mind:

• Do not let children handle laundry packets

• Do not puncture or pull packets apart

• Store out of child's sight and reach

• Keep the packet’s package closed and in a dry place

• Packets quickly dissolve upon contact with water, wet hands, or saliva so it is necessary to keep them

dry

“The American Cleaning Institute is launching the KEY Pledge laundry safety campaign to remind us that we all

play a key role in single-load liquid laundry packet safety. As with any household cleaning product, it’s important

that we all follow proper usage instructions and store the product safely out of reach of children,” said national

child safety expert Kimberlee Mitchell. “The home is a safe haven and we want to be sure that every home is as

protected as possible.”

KEY Pledge Laundry Safety Campaign

Education is the KEY to injury prevention. To raise awareness of safety issues and properly arm consumers with

the necessary information and guidelines for single-load liquid laundry packets, the ACI is asking the public to take

the KEY Pledge to a safe laundry room and routine:

• Keep single-load liquid laundry packets out of the reach of children

• Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of these new laundry products

• You serve a key role in laundry safety

“ACI works toward better living and understands the home is intended to be a place where people feel comfortable

and secure; our mission is to help keep families safe in their homes, improving their health and well being through

safe cleaning products, packaging and practices. Knowing that manufacturers are enhancing the packaging of

single-load laundry packets and including safety icons on labels, we are focused on helping consumers be aware

of the proper safety precautions of cleaning products,” said Nancy Bock, ACI Senior Vice President of Education.

“Through our KEY Pledge laundry safety campaign, we are urging the public to review their household cleaning

habits.”

Consumers are encouraged to take the KEY Pledge online and invite friends and family to do the same. Those

taking the pledge can also track how they are making a difference through a “heat map” that allows them to follow

pledge tallies by zip code in their home state and across the nation.

The ACI consumer safety campaign is a multi-platform educational campaign that aims to increase awareness

Single-load liquid laundry packets have become widely available over the past couple of years—millions of

consumers have found these packets to be an easy and convenient way to get their laundry done efficiently and

American Cleaning Institute Survey Finds Many Households Still Improperly Storing Liquid Laundry Packets Simple Home Safety Precautions Can Stop Preventable Accidents with Small Children

The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI), a nonprofit organization representing producers of household cleaning products, recently conducted a national consumer survey as part of the cleaning product industry’s ongoing commitment to keeping children safe from accidental exposures to liquid laundry packets. Now in its third year, ACI’s laundry safety campaign continues to reach parents across the country with important messages about the safe use and storage of liquid laundry packets. The campaign was created to raise awareness and reduce the unnecessary accidents. The national survey, conducted among 1,000 parents and caregivers, half with children under the age of 4, revealed low consumer awareness of practicing safe laundry habits. Sixty-one percent of parents are storing laundry packets in-sight or in-reach of children and 81 percent of those surveyed mistakenly think their children cannot reach the packets. In fact, over one-third of parents who bring their children with them into the laundry room admit they can reach the laundry detergent. “Like all household cleaning products, liquid laundry packets must be kept away from small children,” said Nancy Bock, ACI Senior Vice President of Education. “These survey results show us that parents and caregivers are still placing this product in areas where children can reach it, which can lead to accidents. Simply placing liquid laundry packets up and out of reach, a precaution we take with other household cleaning products and medicines, can help prevent accidental exposure and potentially serious consequences.” The survey also revealed that roughly 3 million American households with children under four years of age are storing liquid laundry packets on the washing machine, an area that could easily be reached by children. The survey also found that 69 percent of parents do not store laundry packets in a locked cabinet or closet. Locking detergent packets up in a cabinet is an effective way to keep these products out of reach of young children, especially when little ones begin exploring closets and cabinets at an early age. These small and highly concentrated packets first came onto the market in 2012 and have become widely available and used by consumers across the country. With their ease of use, these detergent packets have become extremely popular in households across the country but they can cause serious injury if children ingest them or they get in their eyes. It’s important for all parents and caregivers to practice safe laundry habits by keeping liquid laundry packets in their original container and out of reach of young children. American Cleaning Institute Conducts Survey Focused on Liquid Laundry Packets and Children’s Safety

National survey results reveal additional consumer education, awareness and action needed for liquid laundry packets

The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI), a nonprofit organization representing producers of household cleaning products,

conducted a survey as part of our ongoing efforts to keep children safe from accidental exposures to liquid laundry packets

through our KEY Pledge safety education campaign. The national survey conducted of 1,000 parents and caregivers with

young children (ages 0-4), all of whom use liquid laundry packets, revealed that although many consumers depend on liquid

laundry packets, general safety precautions around storage proved to be low.

According to the survey, approximately 70% of respondents store household cleaners such as dishwashing detergent and

glass and toilet cleaners safely and securely, while only 34% report properly storing their liquid laundry packets in a cabinet or

a cabinet with a lock. Moreover, 1 out of 6 people surveyed admitted to taking no safety precautions at all in regards to liquid

laundry packet storage.

Furthermore, while 60% disclosed they immediately put the packets away once brought into the home, more than 50% say

they aren’t taking proper safety precautions, storing liquid laundry packets on the washing machine, dryer, counter and floor

when not in use. 70% of those keep the product less than five feet from the ground, well within reach of young children.

According to additional research, during the first year liquid laundry packets were on the market, in 85% of the exposures

reviewed, the packet was accessed by children from a visible location. Additionally, 1 in 3 people surveyed shared that their

children can reach the single-load liquid laundry packets.* More specifically, storage or placement of liquid laundry packets

when doing laundry is as follows: 40% on washing machine, 21% on dryer, 13% on open shelf, 12% on counter, 5% in closet,

3% in cabinet without locks and 6% other. Additionally, nearly half (49%) admitted to having children under the age of 4 years

in the room with them while doing laundry.

Survey Methological Notes

The American Cleaning Institute survey was conducted by Directions Research (www.directionsresearch.com) among 1,000

nationally representative American adults, ages 18 and older who have at least one child under 4 years of age and currently

use single-load liquid laundry packets, between May 15th, 2013 and May 20th, 2013, using an email invitation and an online

survey. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the U.S. adult population 18 and older with at least

one child under 4 years of age.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the

number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular

study, the chances are 9 in 10 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 2.6 percentage points from the

result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
