Message from the BoardSubmitted by Marilyn Heiss

As I write this, Somerset county is in the process of recovering from a harrowing summer storm that flooded areas, closed main roads, and destroyed many trees; some of them right here in Sterling Pointe. We are fortunate that we never lost our electricity and that no homes here suffered much damage.

The state is working hard to get as many COVID tests done as possible. Interfaith Urgent Care is working with the state to make this possible. The last few weeks they have been testing at various sites in the area. Our community was invited to participate in the free COVID and antibody testing at the Renaissance Clubhouse two days in August. The New Jersey new infection rate is increasing, so it is even more important to follow the rules: wear a mask, wash and disinfect your hands frequently, and keep a safe six-feet distance between each other to best avoid spreading the virus. We can't let our defenses down.

The repairs to the walking path have been delayed by the rainy weather we've been having. This makes it impossible for the trucks to get back to the path. We would like our turf to be damaged as little as possible by this project, so we need the grass to be dry.

Just a reminder about the mailboxes: the Rules and Regulations, which can be found on the website, clearly state how they are to be maintained. Management will be walking the community and notifying those homes which are not in compliance.

On a happier note, even in the midst of the pandemic, the Women's Club managed to gather for a luncheon under the Clubhouse portico, socially distancing and wearing masks when not eating the delicious sandwiches they provided. Hand sanitizer was available. It was a “bring your own chair and liquid refreshment” gathering. We all had a great time and it was wonderful to see each other in person!

Charyl came to the Clubhouse parking lot several times to deliver the Community Cookbook. Many thanks go to Charyl and Ruth Lipnick for all the time, effort, and love they put into creating this wonderful compilation of the recipes we all submitted. This was a fundraiser for COVID, and I expect Sterling Pointe Activities will be making a contribution of about $1,500. I do have some extra cookbooks available so, if you would like one, please feel free to contact me or Charyl.

The Board, in fact the whole community, thanks Charyl for all she's doing to keep us occupied during our season of quasi-quarantine. I have to say I look forward to Cocktails and Trivia, Bingo, exercise classes and guest speakers as well as the weekly schedule of interesting things to do and see. Where would we all be without Zoom? and Charyl?

Summer is ending. Labor Day is September 7th. Our grandchildren may or may not be going back to school. We will see you walking this amazing neighborhood and on Zoom. The Board wishes you all good health and a safe Fall season.

Men’s Club Submitted by Bob Heiss

I have noticed on my walks around the community, many American Flags are missing. Some may have blown away during the storms. If for some reason you have removed the flag from the tree bed, please replace it. Flags will be picked up after Labor Day; properly disposed of, and replaced next year with new ones.

During the month of August, the Men’s Club held a luncheon meeting under the portico at the Clubhouse. At the time of this writing, the meeting was yet to take place. As a result, I can’t say at this time how well it was attended, and, since this was our nomination meeting for incoming officers, I can’t at this time provide a list of nominees.

Thank goodness we didn’t lose power during the storm at the beginning of August. Many people in the area did and were without for many days. We have been very lucky in Sterling Pointe; we’ve been here a little over 7 years and I can’t remember being without power for more than an hour at a time. (Editor’s note: Lucky you came here after Hurricane Sandy in 2012!)

We will be announcing a Zoom meeting for the election of Men’s Club officers. Check our community announcements for time and date.

Through the end of this year, you can join the Men’s Club without paying dues. If you want to become a member, send your name, address, and email to any of our current officers. We think you’ll be happy you did!

LIST OF MEN'S CLUB OFFICERSBob Heiss, President . . . . . . . . . . . [email protected] Leibowitz, Vice President . . [email protected] Vowinkel, Treasurer . . . . . [email protected] Imperato, Secretary . . . . . . [email protected]

A chance seating, a casual conversation with a fellow swimmer and my sad, pool-less summer was turned around! Thank you to Sandy Martin, who sat next to me at the Women's Club "Portico Party" and casually mentioned that she was swimming laps at the Middlesex Community pool. After explaining where it was, the cost, and the grass and trees that surrounded the pool - I rushed home to husband Ron and we took a "road trip" to see for ourselves. The rest is history! We joined the next day and have been going everyday - weather permitting.

Being born on January 24th and therefore an AQUARIAN - water is a lifeline for me. The pool closing was a depressing blow and after canceling our annual Maine trip in August, after going there for 30 straight years - hubby Dr. Ron knew he had to do something or be around an angry wife that refused all perspective on staying sane and safe.

A couple of things about a pool and COVID. Yes, we wear a mask going in and out of the pool area. No, it is not transmitted through water. The pool guards wipe down the handles on ladders, etc. every 15 minutes. The guards are college guys and gals from the area and they are at the top of their game. We should be so lucky to get ONE of them for SP! Ron and I sit 6' away from other people, and under beautiful trees that shade us at all times. We read, chat and have fun observing the other members. Since we don't know anyone else other than Sandy - and you are NOT allowed to bring guests - it is very relaxing and meditative.

I have tried to duplicate my swimming schedule just like I did when our pool was open - arrive around 1:00 PM, leave around 4:00 PM, head home and water my outside plants, sit outside with a glass of wine and chat with RDL, and then shower and dinner. It has helped me cope with this strange NON- SUMMER and cured a bit of my sadness. Yes, I have to drive 15 minutes to my new pool, with my folding pool chair slung over my shoulder and a bag of snacks and water for refreshment, BUT it has SAVED ME from going even MORE INSANE! (Ron would have told me to put MORE in front of INSANE because he has given up trying to "fix" me! LOL!) He and I always take separate cars, because I inevitably want to stay later. We did this when SP's pool was open and our "commute" was 2 minutes long - out our back door and through the gate! I miss the camaraderie of seeing my friends at our pool and chatting about life in general, vacations planned, grandchildren antics, off-color jokes, hearing belly laughs coming from the lounges and the smell of grills being lit for a barbecue, BUT I am very grateful for what I have at my NEW POOL and so again - thank you Sandy Martin!

A side note - when I am at the Middlesex pool and alone, I have had fun being just an observer and eavesdropper of the people there. We humans are quite interesting and after going 6 days in a row, I see some of the same families and fellow swimmers. The mother

with two sons (I can relate to this gal with my two boys!) having to yell across the pool to get their attention and repeating "Get out! Home in 5!" Watching the teenage girls with smaller bathing suits than would have been allowed by my mother! and watching the antics of the younger boys and girls in the pool, playing, flirting and acting like they are too cool to care, BUT of course they do! I have overheard many conversations from the teachers that go there, and with this damn COVID and the question of how and when the schools will open - they are as confused as ever because the rules are changing every other day. This 2020 September will be like no other because though the school supplies are in the stores, the new clothes are waiting to be bought, the lunch boxes and food snacks are ready for the taking - the kids may need none of it, because if school is still all virtual - pajamas and frozen waffles served at your computer in your living room - are the order of the day! SOME NORMALCY, PLEASE RETURN SAFELY!!!!!

This month, Ron also wrote an article for the SP Newsletter / we are DUELING WRITERS!!! / and he asked me to read it over, etc. for ideas. I on the other hand, when writing my MUSINGS, write them privately, without him ever seeing it first before it is printed. We are very different people and writers and so the poor man has often been the subject, lovingly I hope, of some of our family stories. He often times, when asked about them says, "My wife has a vivid imagination with occasional lapses in reality!" Love the man, but he is delusional! I am ONLY a teller of TRUTHS! Everyone knows AQUARIANS NEVER LIE! Just ask Sandy Niece, Frank Vowinkel and Kashmira Madon! We only LOVE WATER and do NOT have it sloshing around in our brains!

Women’s ClubSubmitted by Rochelle Rosenbaum

The last Women’s Club activity was back in March with the Mahjongg Tournament. Then the Corona Virus entered New Jersey, which made our daily activities come to a complete “STOP”. That included all the activities that go on each day at the Clubhouse. With the Clubhouse closed, meeting your Sterling Pointe friends to play your weekly games of Canasta, Mahjongg, and all the other Women’s Club activities we love and enjoy each spring and summer went on hiatus.

We missed seeing our friends. Zoom Bingo and Zoom Cocktails that Charyl does, have been wonderful, but we all loved being with our friends in person!

Finally, an idea, how about having lunch and sitting outside the Clubhouse under the Portico? So, on a very warm (HOT) Tuesday, July 21 at 12:00 PM, 26 women brought their own chairs and beverages, and had a choice of assorted sandwiches/wraps and chips, compliments of the Women’s Club. They didn’t come for the free food; they came to spend time with the friends and neighbors that they missed.

A good time was had by all who attended and if the weather were a little cooler, I am sure everyone would have stayed until it was time for dinner!

Hopefully, we can do something like this again soon, and once the Corona Virus has been eliminated, we can go back to enjoying our Women’s Club activities with our friends and neighbors in our Clubhouse!

It can’t happen soon enough for me!!!

WATERMELON, FETA, AND MINT SALADBy: J. Kenji Lopez-ALT

Enjoy the last of the watermelon season with this watermelon salad.

INGREDIENTS: • 3 lbs. seedless watermelon (about 1 small or ¼ large) rind

removed, cut into 1-inch chunks (about 2 lbs. of chunks after rind is discarded)

• 1 tablespoon juice from 1 lemon, plus 4 (2 inch) strips zest, removed with a sharp vegetable peeler

• 3 tablespoons virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling • ¼ cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese (see Note 1) • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • Up to 4 ounces (1 quart) arugula leaves (optional)

PROCEDURE: • Place watermelon chunks in a large bowl. • Finely chop lemon zest. Add lemon juice and half of zest to

bowl with watermelon. • Add oil, mint, and arugula (if using) and toss until watermelon

is evenly dressed. • Season lightly to taste with salt and pepper. (The cheese will

add saltiness, so go light on the salt at this stage.) • Transfer salad to a wide, shallow bowl or a large plate and

spread out evenly. • Crumble feta over the top and sprinkle with remaining lemon

zest. • Drizzle with more olive oil and a few grinds of black pepper. • Serve immediately.

WHY IT WORKS: • Sweet watermelon, salty feta, and mint are a classic pairing. • Adding a good dose of chopped lemon zest enhances the

aromatic flavors in the watermelon. • Crumbling the feta over the top instead of tossing it together

with the rest of the salad provides a more interesting finished texture and flavor.

NOTE 1: Look for true Greek or Bulgarian sheep’s milk feta, which tends to be creamier and tangier than domestic cow’s milk versions.

To make this salad a meal, add other chopped ingredients such as: Arugula, cubed cucumbers, halved cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, a few small slivers of black olive or for heat, sliced chili peppers.

NOTE 2: Sprinkling salt onto melon is a Southern tradition. In small doses, salt magnifies melon’s sweetness and heightens its flavor.

Try some flavored salts, such as Wine Salt made by mixing about 2 tsp. red or white wine with ¼ cup kosher salt. Dry the flavored salt on a plate for 24 hours before storing. Vanilla Salt made by scraping the seeds of one vanilla bean into ½ cup kosher salt and 1 Tbsp. sugar. Let the mix stand at least 1 week for maximum flavor. Smoky Salt made by mixing ½ tsp. smoked paprika to ¼ cup kosher salt.

Goodbye Summer

I do not understand why prescription medicine is allowed to advertise on TV or why anyone would think of trying one of the medicines after listening to the laundry list of warnings of possible side effects. But this is definitely an exception!

Do you have feelings of inadequacy?Do you suffer from shyness?Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive?Do you sometimes feel stressed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident. It can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you are ready and willing to do just about anything. You will notice the benefits of Cabernet Sauvignon almost immediately, and, with a regimen of regular doses, you will overcome obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want.

Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past. You will discover talents you never knew you had.

Cabernet Sauvignon may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use it, but women who would not mind nursing or becoming pregnant are encouraged to try it.

Side effects may include: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, loss of motor control, loss of clothing, loss of money, delusions of grandeur, table dancing, headache, dehydration, dry mouth and a desire to sing Karaoke and play all-night Strip Poker, Truth or Dare and Naked Twister.

Warnings: • The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may make you

think you are whispering when you are not. • May cause you to tell your friends over and over again that

you love them. • May cause you to think you can sing. • May create the illusion that you are tougher, smarter, faster

and better-looking than most people. Please feel free to share this important medical information!

A Humble Bumble BeeSubmitted by Shashi Jain

A little bee,bumble but humble,sat on a sunflowersnug as a bug in a rug.

Her sunflower was puny, with petals missing,Like an edentulousold man with few grey hairs.

There were others, tall, handsome sunflowers, magnificent specimens of God’s creativitysurrounding bee’s home.

Usurpers of first rays of occidental dawn, dallying with midday breeze, casting longest shadows while the Sun went home.

Every passerby and their dogs, gawked and admired, inflating their ego, ethereal as they were.

Golden finches darted, enjoying their seeds and the beauty.Even the monarchs couldn’t resist. They came and went, but none stayed.

This bee must be dumb-witted, too old or too blind. She does not see our beauty, she pays us no mind. They texted her an invitation.

In pollen-filled braggadocioswith an over-confident tone, they charmed her to comeand make them as her home.

The little humble bumble beesmiled, and texted back.“It is not the size or brightnessthat makes a place a home. The home is where the heart is, this flower has my own.

This little visitor showed up at Nancy Imperato's vegetable garden. Isn't it beautiful?

Lifestyle HappeningsSubmitted by Charyl Friedman

As usual, the summer has flown by quickly. I am hoping that the warm weather will continue throughout October. I love spending time outside and I don’t like being cold. Let’s hope for a mild winter like last year.

It’s been wonderful to “see” so many of you at our Zoom events. Thank you to everyone for their Lifestyle support. However, in July and August, it was my great pleasure to see some of you in person when I attended the Women’s Club outdoor lunch (thank you for inviting me) and again when I was at Sterling Pointe delivering the Cookbooks.

Speaking of Cookbooks, I’d like to again thank everyone who submitted a recipe or more. In addition, a huge “shout out” to Ruth Lipnick who did a fantastic job with design and layout. We have sold over 100 cookbooks, which brings our donation to the Covid-19 Relief Fund to around $1500.00. That’s phenomenal! However, we do have some extra copies to sell. If you didn’t already purchase a Cookbook or would like an additional one to use as a gift, please let me know. They are easily attainable as Marilyn Heiss (our treasurer) has the remainder of the cookbooks right here in Sterling Pointe. Email me or Marilyn directly to pick up and pay for a copy.

Vinay and Harshada MeswaniVinay and Harshada Meswani and their family celebrated Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu festival that celebrates brotherhood and love. On this day, sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers to protect them against evil influences, and pray for their long life and happiness.

My grandson, Ryan Davis, is a terrific golfer. He is a bright student and a considerate young guy. Penn State University has given him a 5th year scholarship to get his Master’s degree in 2020/2021. I love him dearly and I am very proud of his accomplishments!

Ryan was selected for the PING All-Northeast Region honors as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He becomes the seventh Nittany Lion to earn all-region honors all four years of his career.

Ryan lives in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, and was the top team finisher in five events in Penn State's abbreviated 2019-20 season. He recorded his career-low tournament score of 207 at the Old Town Club Collegiate in fall 2019 and tied it at the Florida Gators Invitational in February 2020. He carded his career-low round 66 in the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate for the second-straight year.

Ryan is pictured below.

Last month we kicked off three exercise classes live, via Zoom. We had a fantastic turnout for the August session, and the schedule for September/October is in this newsletter. Fit and Firm is offered on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 AM. It is a combination of cardio, strength, abdominals, and balance. We work out standing as well as sitting in a chair.

Chair Tai Chi, a new format for Sterling Pointe, is offered on Mondays at 10:00 AM. Chair Tai Chi is a graceful form of exercise that involves stretching and movements performed in a slow, focused manner, along with deep breathing. Its benefits include balance, flexibility, range of motion, strength, energy, pain relief, stress reduction, tranquility, and peace of mind. If you have yet to take a trial class for either format and would like to do so, please email me.

Our weekly "Bingo" sessions continue every Thursday at 2:00 PM. If you haven’t already done so, check it out. We play 5 rounds of Bingo and gift cards are awarded for each round. We always have a great time and new people join regularly. If you don’t know how to play Bingo, I am happy to teach you. Please contact me and I will set up a private lesson.

"Cocktails, Conversation and Trivia" also continues weekly on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. This too is a lot of fun, and we learn all sorts of new information from the trivia. I have recently added some Mad Libs to the mix, often causing us to break into fits of laughter. All you have to do is click on the Zoom link I provide weekly and join us. Hope you will.

I hope you are enjoying the weekly calendars I send out. I have been hearing from residents with positive feedback about some of the events they have attended. I love hearing from you. I spend a lot of time researching live events, recipes, exercise classes, field trips, etc. that I think will be appealing to many of you. Your feedback helps guide me in the choices I make. If there is any topic or event that you are interested in, please let me know.

"The Sterling Pointe Fitness Challenge Calendar" continues to be sent out on a monthly basis. You should have already received the September Fitness Calendar by the time you read this. The calendar provides you with 2 exercises each day. The number of repetitions increases every week. Following the calendar gives you an easy way to get daily exercise that doesn’t take long to perform. Pictures are provided so you have a visual of what to do, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I am in the process of accepting submissions for the October newsletter. If you have an article, a review, a poem, some pictures, anything you want to share, please email them to me by Tuesday, September 8th.

Keep an eye out for information about new speakers and events I will be lining up to educate and entertain us virtually. As always, I welcome your ideas and feedback for programs, presenters, etc.

Be sure to take a look at the photos surrounding this article. They were submitted by residents and give us a glimpse into their lives.

We are all in this together, and together we are stronger. Be safe and be well.

Facile Answers No MoreSubmitted by Ron Loffredo

At last year’s holiday party, which, by the way, seems like decades ago, I listened attentively to friends and neighbors discussing their lives. Well, not really their lives but mostly their health problems. Now, I’m just as guilty as the next senior citizen of telling “cheerful” stories about my new urologist or my special fungal problem or conversations like, “You know it’s not surgery it’s just a procedure.” One friend, after hearing doctor/health stories ad nauseam said: “Well, I have some good news, my eyelashes are still quite healthy. Unfortunately, he went on, “My back, neck, stomach, ears, ankles, eyes and gums all need looking into.” The table erupted with laughter.

I must admit that I do, at times, indulge in commiserating with my peers about our aging bodies. However, the older I get, the more I savor time with my kids and grandkids. Sure, this goes without saying. They’re your family and you love them. And, that of course is true. But more and more I realize that I NEED to hear conversations about teachers who are mean or a boss who expects too much or problems with the exhaust on my son’s car. You see, these conversations I can handle. Answers come easily. But what do you say when a friend of 50 years tearfully looks you in the eyes and tells you he can no longer tolerate the side effects of the cancer drug he’s on? Or when another dear friend, a few years my senior, tells me he can’t go to sleep at night because he’s afraid of never waking up. Facile answers either don’t come to mind or they somehow feel trite or even worse, insulting. We’ve all been there. We feel the sadness and the fear, and at the same time become acutely aware of our own helplessness in responding, as well as our own fear lying just below the surface. But we try our best to just be there and hope that the empathy shines through.

After seventy-five years of life and fifty years of studying psychology and philosophy, when life’s ultimate issues are presented, my sum total of accumulated wisdom, humbly offered here, is to live and love fully, and hopefully, to laugh often and to strive to focus outside of yourself. Hug a loved one, admire a spectacular sunset, relish the smell of your favorite meal. Center your attention on friends, on family, on helping others, and most importantly, on being grateful. Do what you must regarding health issues but, at the same time, try like all hell to seize the day as if it were the only one you had. As Mark Twain once said, “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.”
